This week, the National Institute on Drug Abuse is sponsoring a “Drug Facts Weekâ€. Targeted at teens and young adults, this week centers around debunking myths regarding drug abuse.
“When approaching such a sensitive subject as drug abuse and drug addiction prevention, we have to make sure that we open the lines of communication in a safe way,†begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “The best way to do this is in the broad sense, at the national level. This type of approach lets teens and young adults know, ‘If you have a question, we’re here and this is the place to get it answered’. One of the most important parts about a national event such as this is that it gets communities involved in affecting change. It helps everyone see just how widespread substance abuse is and fosters the formation of relationships within the community which can offer support for teens and young adults who may not have a mentor to whom they can look for guidance. Community based education also provides a sense of belonging and a sense of likeness to a group of people. And, research has shown that the incidence of substance abuse is less among those who feel they ‘fit’ and belong somewhere.â€
