Don’t Let Your Hair Slow You Down This Summer, Says The Harley Medical Group

The UK’s leading cosmetic surgery group has teamed-up with a group of four London 2012 Olympic athletes as part of a new advertising campaign, designed to encourage more people to experience the benefits of laser hair removal.

Zara Dampney and Shauna Mullin from the Team GB beach volleyball team were joined by diver Pete Waterfield, an Olympic silver medallist, and Commonwealth heptathlon champion Louise Hazel. The athletes each underwent an individual consultation during which a nurse covered exactly how the treatment works and assessed their suitability for the treatment, before undergoing laser hair removal in London, at The Harley Medical Group’s Harley Street clinic.

Before walking out into a crowded arena, the athletes need to be 100 per cent sure that they are looking their best and will be able to compete to the best of their ability. Zara, who will be performing on a specially made beach at Horse Guards Parade in the capital, stressed the importance of knowing that she is looking her best when she walks out onto a court.

She said: “Obviously it is really important to feel confident and to not have to worry about those kinds of things, and we’re travelling around so much that it can be quite difficult to keep on top of it. With permanent hair removal it is one less thing for us to have to worry about.”

Louise added: “Not only has it given me confidence on the track, knowing that I can put my skimpy knickers on and feel safe and sound, it saves so much time with shaving and having to de-frizz and de-fuzz every day.”

Established in 1983, The Harley Medical Group offers a wide range of surgical and non-surgical procedures, from botox injections and line and wrinkle treatments, to breast implants and face lifts. Importance Of Individualized Drug Rehab Highlighted

Within the field of addiction treatment many methodologies are available for rehabilitation. But, none are quite as effective as the approach used by one particular drug rehab located in Canaan, CT.

In its humble beginnings, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center set out to provide innovative and individualized treatment. Through its evidence-based treatment modalities, supported by new innovative treatment modalities, Mountainside created a rehab model that sets the course for lifelong sobriety success for those entering into the Mountainside treatment program. This newfound approach was relatively simple in nature: individualized treatment for each person.

“At its core, our rehab program is very straightforward,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Each person who enters into rehab is unique – they bring their own set of circumstances into treatment and, because of that, there’s no exclusive treatment model that fits everyone. When a person enters into our rehab program our team of clinical professionals completes a thorough assessment and then is able to create a program that addresses the uniqueness of each person. Some individuals who enter into treatment present with dual diagnoses; this requires the services of a psychiatrist to help with an underlying problem that may be contributing to the addiction. Other individuals may enter into treatment experiencing massive withdrawals from their substance of choice, necessitating a physical detox. Whatever the need, we are able to create an individual course of action which establishes a solid foundation for long-term sobriety success.”

If you or a family member is struggling with a substance abuse problem, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can help you by creating an individualized treatment program that addresses your specific needs for recovery. Our outstanding family care program provides the comprehensive services that families need when dealing with an addiction or alcoholism issue by giving families the tools necessary to rebuild their bonds of unity. Mountainside’s treatment recovery program is recognized as one of the most comprehensive and individualized programs within the addiction treatment field.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center is a modern drug rehab facility that is skilled in serving a variety of clients with various addictions and in varying stages of addiction. The caring, compassionate team is made up of licensed and certified social workers and counselors who have extensive experience and specialty in the addiction treatment field. In addition, the staff includes a Nurse Practitioner, as well as a Registered Nurse, both of whom also have specializations and experience within the field of addiction treatment and alcohol rehab.

Mountainside also provides services for those individuals who come to them with dual diagnoses and require the services of a Psychiatrist to help conquer the unique challenges that dual diagnosis brings.

For the past 13 years, Mountainside has established itself as an innovator within the addiction treatment field, and the treatment modalities Mountainside utilizes are regarded as among the most cutting-edge approaches in helping individuals to get, and to remain, sober. As a result of their unique, innovative approaches to addiction treatment, Mountainside has become the model for the addiction treatment field.

The program, along with its professional addiction treatment team, have earned national recognition and resulted in Mountainside being invited to Washington by the White House to meet with the White House Drug Czar, John P. Walters, for an in-depth meeting on what makes its program so successful. These accolades did not go unnoticed within the addiction treatment field and resulted in the adoption by many throughout the country of a more holistic approach to drug addiction treatment.

Bupa Reveals Only Half Of Brits Visit The Dentist

Bupa has revealed that more than half of Brits believe that the quality of a person’s teeth has a major impact on a person’s career or romantic life, yet only half of UK residents visit the dentist regularly.

Bupa’s research found that three in five people (63 per cent) believe having bad teeth can prevent someone from finding a partner while over half (52%) believe having nice teeth can help someone get a better job. Almost half (46%) of respondents believe having nice teeth can help a person to make more friends.

However, only half of the people polled (53 per cent) attend a regular dental examination and one in seven (14 per cent) has not used any dental services in the last four years, with four per cent having never visited the dentist at all.

Despite the trend for American-style perfectly straight, sparkling white teeth, a British smile was voted the most popular in the poll, with Kate Middleton’s natural smile trouncing the competition and being voted the nation’s favourite.

Not only does the nation think that having a nice smile is important, it seems that many people would do an awful lot to get one, with one in seven (14 per cent) saying that they would give up having sex for a whole year if it meant they could get perfect teeth. Similarly, one in five (22%) would forgo booze for a year if they could have a spectacular smile

Brian Franks, Clinical Director, Dentistry, Bupa Health and Wellbeing said: “Being happy with your teeth can have a big impact on your confidence and this can affect your work and relationships. So it’s surprising that so many people don’t go for regular dental examinations. Even people who are currently happy with their teeth should pay attention to their dental health, as problems can happen at any time and get worse if not treated. For example, gum disease is very common, affecting more than half of adults. If left untreated for a long time it can lead to tooth loss. But the good news is that in its early stage it is completely reversible so it’s vital to visit your dentist regularly so they can spot any potential problems early and help prevent them getting worse.”

More than one in three people said that the expense is the main reason for not visiting the dentist regularly. Although three in ten people have landed themselves in debt or had to make sacrifices in order to cover unexpected dental bills, only one in ten people have dental insurance or a dental cash plan.

Fostering People Ireland Announces Recruitment Events

Fostering People Ireland, the non-statutory Dublin-based fostering agency, has announced two upcoming events aimed at recruiting more carers to help the growing number of children in need of care in the capital and the surrounding area. Fostering People Ireland has grown its reputation since its launch in September 2011, but remains in need of qualified, enthusiastic carers.

The first event will be held at Maudlin House Hotel in Naas, County Kildare on 23 May 2012 from 4pm – 8pm. The second event will be held on 6 June 2012 at the Premier Inn, Airparks in Swords, County Dublin from 4pm – 8pm. Refreshments will be provided at both events.

The fostering agency based in Dublin is encouraging people from all walks of life to come and talk to their advisors about all things fostering, from qualities needed to become a foster carer to fees and allowances. The events are an ideal opportunity for people to have an informal chat with the agency’s foster care experts in order to see if caring would be a good fit for them.

Whilst Foster Care Fortnight is in full swing in the UK, Fostering People Ireland is determined to keep the spotlight firmly on addressing the growing need for carers in the Dublin area.

Lesley Dale, Service Manager at Fostering People Ireland, said: “Events like these are crucial in helping people find out whether fostering is right for them. Whether they are able to drop by for a quick chat or stay for a drink to discuss fostering, we can provide the information that can help them make the decision that has the potential to change the lives of children in need.

“Fostering People have really made a name for themselves in Ireland as an independent fostering agency with a great network of support for its foster carers. We hope that these events will help us get that message across and convince people that deciding to become a foster carer is life changing.”

New State Law Hopes To Limit Detrimental Effects Of Underage Drinking

A new Indiana state law, signed into effect by Governor Mitch Daniels, offers protection from prosecution for some minor alcohol-related offenses.

The law goes into effect on July 1, 2012 and offers protection for individuals who may be publically intoxicated or who are underage drinkers and are seeking help for another person who is facing an alcohol-related emergency.

“This law should be seen as a way to help save lives of underage drinkers,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Sometimes, a group of underage students will join with others at a party, consuming a great deal of alcohol, and someone will fall critically ill due to excessive alcohol consumption. The tendency would be for the participants to protect themselves to the detriment of the person who needs medical attention. Under this new law, if a fellow underage drinker helps another potentially critically ill underage drinker, neither will be prosecuted. While we need to send the message for those who are underage to abstain from drinking alcohol entirely, we also need to make certain that those who have consumed too much alcohol do get the medical help that they need.”

The new Indiana law, called the Lifeline Law, provides immunity, as long as the person reporting the incident cooperates fully with police and other law enforcement officials, provides his or her contact details, including full name, and he or she must remain at the scene until police or the paramedics arrive. The message that this law hopes to send is that even if you have illegally consumed alcohol, one’s primary goal is to save the life of another person in peril.

Underage college drinking, which includes binge drinking, has claimed the lives of so many young people and will continue to do so until those at risk receive vital alcoholism treatment. Fortunately, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center specializes in helping individuals get on the road to recovery through their holistic drug rehab and alcoholism treatment programs. Their evidence based holistic treatment models are among the most effective for long term sobriety and are recognized among the most comprehensive and individualized programs within the addiction treatment field.

BootsWebMD.com Reveals New Research Into Brits’ Summer Fitness Regimes

BootsWebMD.com has revealed new research showing that Brits are going for gold as they gear up for a summer of sport. However, the research also showed that many are sustaining unnecessary workout-related injuries.

Over half of survey respondents (53%) said they have started a new fitness regime in 2012, with the main motivation among those who have done so being to keep fit rather than lose weight.

Their good intentions are making them feel less stressed (44%) and more confident (31%), yet nearly one in five (16%) has sustained an injury. As well as bruises, the most common injuries are ankle or wrist sprains (26%), shin splints (23%), pulling a muscle (23%) and hamstring injuries (19%).

Over one third (39%) from the survey of 2,000 people who said they have started a new fitness routine in 2012 look online for fitness information. In fact, among the top ten search terms on BootsWebMD.com’s fitness centre are ‘hamstrings’ and ‘shin splints’, reflecting the common injuries identified in the research.

Richard Callender, fitness instructor and TV trainer from ITV’s ‘The Biggest Loser’, said: “It’s really encouraging to see so many people getting more active in 2012. Everyone has different motivations for exercising, whether it’s to keep fit, lose weight, de-stress or just to have fun and socialise with friends and family, but it’s vital they all know how to exercise safely.”

The research shows that for people to continue this positive step, stay healthy and prepare for a summer of sport, they need to be taking greater care when exercising. Over a quarter (27%) of people surveyed admit they do not feel confident they are exercising in a correct and safe way/ Reasons for injury include not following instructions properly (28%), exercising too strenuously (34%) or not being offered proper inductions (23%). A third (33%) of the injuries has led to a long-term health problem.

Dr Rob Hicks, GP and BootsWebMD.com contributor, said: “Exercising is one of the best ways for people to stay fit and healthy, and it’s important that people look after themselves and follow the correct instructions when they exercise and know what level of exercise they should be adopting. There are both short and long-term health consequences of not exercising safely and people should ensure they feel comfortable with what they are doing before they start.”

Further findings from the research showed that more women (54%) than men (52%) have taken up a new fitness routine in 2012. The age group most likely to have started a fitness routine this year is those between 18-24 (64%).

Coalition For The Advancement Of Brachytherapy

The Coalition for the Advancement of Brachytherapy (CAB) has reviewed recent media reports stemming from a study originally presented in December 2011 by physicians associated with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The study compared the efficacy of whole breast irradiation (WBI) to accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI), including the use of brachytherapy to treat select patients with early stage breast cancer. CAB believes that the methodology used in the MD Anderson study is misleading as it utilizes a Medicare billing claims database that does not include patient risk stratification data and therefore is not appropriate to use to compare outcomes and toxicities of ABPI to that of whole breast irradiation (WBI).

The treatments examined utilize different methodologies for delivering radiation therapy following surgery for the treatment of breast cancer. APBI delivers a targeted radiation therapy to select low risk patients over a five-day period. Whereas WBI delivers a broader radiation therapy whereby the entire breast is treated over the course of 30-40 days. The conclusions reached regarding the relative efficacy of the two forms of treatments are based completely on a retrospective study of insurance billing claims. This retrospective study fails to take into account key patient clinical characteristics, including, but not limited to pathology and staging, which determine risk assignment of a patient. Further, the billing code data was collected from patients treated from 2000 through 2007. Since that time, advances in brachytherapy product design, physics planning and delivery of dose have led to greater precision and accuracy of radiation treatment with improved outcomes.

CAB contends that it is impossible to draw any meaningful comparisons or conclusions without taking into consideration patient risk assessments. Counter to the findings in the MD Anderson study are multiple peer-reviewed publications available supporting the safe and effective use of APBI in appropriately selected patients. The safety and effectiveness of APBI is further supported by the fact that the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) reaffirmed its Consensus Statement in 2011 endorsing the use of APBI in appropriately selected patients. The ASTRO APBI Consensus Statement was originally issued in 2009 based on an exhaustive search of the available medical literature in combination with expert opinion and public comment.

More recent data from a trial comprising over fourteen hundred breast cancer patients, presented on May 5, 2012 at the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) Annual Meeting, found that APBI is equally effective, if not more effective, in preventing local breast cancer recurrence than WBI. * This trial’s findings not only contradict the MD Anderson data in finding that tumor control in the breast appears to be similar for APBI and WBI, but suggest that disease control at the initial tumor site may be better with APBI.

Michael Krachon, CAB Chair notes, “The MD Anderson study is by no means sufficient to condemn a promising procedure like APBI brachytherapy. As we await results of the randomized NSABP-B39 Phase III Trial comparing WBI to APBI, physicians should be mindful of the many positive peer-reviewed publications analyzing the efficacy and toxicity associated 2 1455 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Suite 250, Washington, D.C. 20004 with APBI brachytherapy. The technique has been endorsed by ASTRO in appropriately selected patients, and physicians must take into account the clinical presentation of the patient and their own clinical judgment in the safe and appropriate use of this treatment modality.”

PruHealth Reveals Brits Are Eating Less Healthily Due To Rising Living Costs

PruHealth has announced that, according to its recent study, every one in five Brits (22%) is eating less healthily due to the rising cost of living.

With the UK dipping back into recession and food inflation on the rise, new data from PruHealth, the health insurance provider that rewards healthy behaviour, finds the continuing rise in cost of living means that 10.6 million Brits are not eating as healthily as they would like to and over half (52%) believe their health has suffered as a result of the recession.

The study, which ran at the start of the financial downturn in 2008 and again this year, highlights the nation’s health is sinking further into the doldrums in terms of its eating habits.

Over the last four years 75% of Brits have changed their eating and shopping habits and 85% of these stated the recession and or rising food prices as the cause for the change.

The ‘five-a-day’ mantra is one of the most high profile Government health campaigns, but the number of Brits struggling to reach the recommended target has increased by 26%. Three fifths (59%) admit they are currently finding it a challenge compared to 47% at the start of the recession in 2008

More than two thirds (68%) of Brits say healthier foods tend to be more expensive. One in six (16%) respondents said they’re buying as much as they can that is ‘reduced to clear’ and one in ten (11%) only buy foods that are on special offer. Worryingly, around one in four (24%) Brits say they regularly take vitamin supplements because they are unable to eat as healthily as they like or to supplement their diet.

Naturally most parents want to put their children’s health first and ensure they have a nutritionally balanced diet, but almost one in five (18%) are doing this at the expense of their own health. One in ten (9%) are even skipping meals so their children eat well.

Dr Dawn Richards, Head of Clinical Service at PruHealth, commented: “We can clearly see how people’s healthy eating habits have been affected, with the picture having got significantly worse since the start of the economic downturn. People are only too well aware of the need to eat healthily, but financial constraints are making it difficult, resulting in people’s health being negatively affected.”

New England Drug Rehab Urges Caution For Prom Season

As many teens get ready for their much-anticipated, end-of-the year celebration, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center issues an important reminder.

Prom season is a time of excitement for many of America’s youth. However, statistics show that nearly one-third of the alcohol related automobile accidents involving teens occur during the period of April, May, and June.

“This time of year, parents and students both tend to get caught up in the excitement of prom season,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “During this time of excitement, however, it’s important to remember the dangers of underage drinking, as well as driving with someone who may be of legal age who has been drinking. The realities of the statistics are harsh – more teens and young adults will face tragedies during these three months in alcohol-related accidents than at any other time of the year. Parents are strongly urged to make certain that they know who their children will be with and, as ‘uncool’ as it may be, to even be a designated driver for their children. Being proactive and having open communication with your children can go a long way in preventing tragedies from occurring.”

If you have a child or someone else in your life who has become burdened with alcoholism, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment center offers a comprehensive alcohol abuse program that can help them set their life back in order. Sierra Vista AZ. Dentist Drives Costs Down With “Smile-A-Mile” That Pays Your Gas

Dr. Steve Wolfington, of Cochise Caring Dentistry in Sierra Vista, AZ. announces their “Smile-A-Mile Program” that reimburses Cochise County Arizona Residents for gas used in round trip visits to their Sierra Vista dentist office.

Dr. Wolfington states, ”with the continued high price of gas, Cochise County residents are now paying an average of $3.73 per gallon, and with many patients a round trip visit can be up to 70 miles or more.

We have many patients traveling to our dental office in Sierra Vista, AZ. from Benson, Bisbee, Douglas and other outlying cities in Cochise County, even as far as Tucson. Our dental office has been in this location for over 30 years, and many staff members have treated and cared for 2 and 3 generations of our patient’s family and friends. They drive here because they want the comfort of knowing they are in the same good hands as many of their family and friends have for so long.

We were compelled to do something to maintain the comfort level our patients enjoy and for new patients as well, and we want to keep it that way. My wife Liz and I wanted to find a way we could help off-set the high cost of gas, and we came up with a simple program to help out our patients, “Smile-A-Mile”.

Smile-A-Mile reimburses patients for the round trip cost of gas

Our “Smile-A-Mile” Program reimburses our patients for their round trip cost of gas for each visit. We calculated the mileage from each of the cities like Benson, Douglas, Tombstone, Bisbee and more, to our Sierra Vista, AZ Dentist Office. We used the average miles per gallon that a typical family vehicle gets according to statistics, the average cost of per gallon of gas throughout Cochise County Arizona, and came up with our “Smile-A-Mile Program”. As an example, our Benson Arizona Patients are now being reimbursed $7.00 for each and every visit to our Sierra Vista Dental office, and all they need to do is bring in a water, electricity or phone bill to show proof of residence”.

We asked Dr. Wolfington “What about people with more than one family member or friend being treated, how are they reimbursed”?

“We kept it simple as we could; it is reimbursed per patient, so as to support car pooling. If there are 3 patients in one visit, it is three times the gas reimbursement amount. The amount to be reimbursed is credited to their individual treatment upon payment for services. We have placed the rates of reimbursement for 8 cities on our new Cochise Caring Dentistry website, and if anyone outside of these cities would like to become a patient and join the Smile-A-Mile Program, all they have to do is contact us, tell us what city their traveling from and we’ll respond with the amount.”

World Asthma Day 2012: San Francisco Childcare Centers Eliminate Exposure to Bleach Cleaning Products

Bleach is a strong irritant, frequently linked to newly-acquired asthma. A recent decision by Compass Children’s Center in San Francisco to use exclusively “bleach-free” cleaning products resulted in visibly less asthmatic symptoms in both children and childcare workers.

According to the U.S. Department of Health – National Institutes of Health (NIH), asthma affects more than 25 million people in the United States and over 230 million people worldwide. As asthma typically begins in early childhood, the NIH is committed to reducing environmental risk factors in children in order to prevent asthma before it begins.

On the forefront of asthma prevention, the San Francisco Asthma Task Force in a 2011 report on Bleach Exposure in Child Care Settings , discovered a high correlation between bleach exposure and work-related new-onset asthma cases as well as the exacerbation of pre-existing asthma conditions. As a result they set about field-testing various sanitizers and initially recommended a number of bleach-free disinfectant and sanitizer alternatives.

Food Contact Sanitizer Recommended

In late April 2012 the task force issued an interim update to the 2011 report with the discovery of an accelerated hydrogen peroxide sanitizer, SaniDate Ready-to-Use (RTU) Hard Surface Sanitizer. This sanitizer can be used directly on food-contact surfaces and as a fruit & vegetable wash, requiring only 1 minute contact time to eliminate over 99.9% of bacteria and human health pathogens.

SaniDate RTU was also recently approved by San Francisco Department of Public Health and various city ministries have begun roll out of the product as it’s recommended bleach-alternative sanitizer for food-contact surface.

The following video features the story of Compass Children’s Center in San Francisco and the lives of children in poverty that are being affected for the positive by reducing and preventing asthma through their transition to a bleach-free environment.

SaniDate Ready-to-Use Hard Surface Sanitizer is available for retail or volume purchase through EnviroSelects LLC.

New England Rehab Highlights Newest Problem With Cocaine

New research suggests that cocaine causes the brain to age faster in chronic users than the normal aging process for non-users of cocaine. A study by scientists at the University of Cambridge, and published in Molecular Psychiatry, focused on the grey matter of the brain in chronic cocaine users versus the grey matter of those who didn’t use cocaine. The study pointed out that while everyone loses grey matter every year, those who were chronic cocaine users lost grey matter at double the rate of non-users. Grey matter in the brain is responsible for decision-making, self-regulation, attention and memory, and the increased loss of it causes the brain to age more rapidly.

“It’s rather ironic,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Individuals who use cocaine many times state that their reasons for use include having greater energy and a feeling of youthfulness. In reality, cocaine is, quite literally, draining the youth right out of their bodies. Cocaine is very highly addictive substance and is quite prevalent on the nightclub scene with younger individuals. That’s why it’s so imperative that we quickly get the word out and educate the public, particularly young people, about the potential, increased aging effects of this truly life-altering drug.”

The United Nations Office on Drug and Crime estimates that cocaine is the second most problematic drug, with nearly 21 million cocaine users worldwide. The signs of cocaine use are bloodshot eyes, nosebleeds, runny nose, weight loss, increased need for money and manic episodes. If you notice any of these signs and suspect that a young adult is experimenting with cocaine or is addicted to cocaine, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can help you effectively and gently assist them to confront their drug use issues through professional intervention services. The team at Mountainside can make it easier for an addict and his or her family to make the entry into substance abuse treatment and into a comprehensive family care program.
