European public-private project to advance precision psychiatry by introducing biology into clinical routine

PARIS AND MONTPELLIER, 30-Mar-2022 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — ALCEDIAG announces the launch of the EDIT-B Consortium, supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology for Health (EIT Health). This newly formed European public-private partnership aims at advancing precision psychiatry by introducing biology into clinical routine.

Around 300M people in the world are affected by depression. Studies show that up to 40% of them may be misdiagnosed and potentially bipolar. As a result, diagnosis is often delayed by an average of 7.5 years, worsening patients’ mental and physical conditions as well as their loved ones’ quality of life.

The EDIT-B Consortium aims to solve this diagnostic challenge by using specific RNA editing based biomarkers and artificial intelligence to validate and commercialize an accurate, reliable, and quick blood test to diagnose bipolar disorder.

The Consortium brings together prominent members from across Europe who will be working over the next three years to achieve this goal: Alcediag, Alcen, Capital Region of Denmark, Fundació Clinic per la Recerca Biomèdica, Fundació Sant Joan de Déu, GHU Paris Psychiatrie & Neurosciences, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu, ProductLife Group and Synlab. With a total budget of € 5.2 million, EDIT-B is co-funded by the EIT Health (€ 2.5M) and the partners.

“This project will accurately separate bipolar disorder from unipolar disorder. This distinction is extremely important clinically, because the treatments are different. EDIT-B Consortium gathers all relevant expertise and as the principal investigator in the clinical trial, I hope we will be able to validate a test that will improve the lives of many people living with bipolar disorder”, says Prof. Eduard Vieta from the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.

SYNLAB is the first diagnostic service provider in Europe, present in 36 countries in 4 continents and committed to developing high value solutions for patients  focusing on medical excellence and customer centricity.

Maurizio Ferrari, SYNLAB Italy Chief Medical Officer says: “innovation in healthcare is a key pillar for the customer centricity and  we are very proud to be part of this European research project that really may help patients with psychiatric disorders”.

“I am proud to see that the EDIT-B consortium led by our partner Alcediag – a subsidiary of Alcen – will tackle the challenge of improving the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. In doing so, they support EIT Health main mission which is to help citizens live healthier and longer lives and at the same time put the spotlight on mental health which is key to the proper care management and wellbeing of our communities”, adds Jean Marc Bourez, interim CEO of EIT Health.

“On this World Bipolar Day, Alcediag team is happy to announce its contribution to solving the bipolar disorder diagnostic issue.  We are proud and grateful to our partners and the EIT Health for this opportunity to advance science while having a positive impact on people’s lives”, said Alexandra Prieux, CEO of Alcediag.

Finnish Servicepoint to resell, install and support Systech’s serialization solutions in Scandinavia, the Baltic States, and Russia

servicepoint-fi__logo_europawireFinland, 23-Sep-2016 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — Systech International, a global leader in brand protection technologies, today announces the extension of its strategic partnership with Servicepoint, a leading serialization automation supplier.

Systech has signed a global agreement with Servicepoint, allowing the company to act as a single point of contact for customers across Europe. Through this agreement, Servicepoint will now resell, install and support Systech’s serialization solutions to customers of any size across Europe, especially in Scandinavia, the Baltic States, and Russia.

This agreement comes at a critical time within the pharmaceutical industry, as the European market is growing exponentially. It is estimated that over the next three years, 15,000 production lines for prescription medication in Europe must be fitted with a serialization system. The European Commission adopted a regulation on October 2, 2015, under which the serialization of prescription medicine packages will become mandatory in all EU countries by 2019.

Systech and Servicepoint first engaged two years ago when jointly delivering serialization and automation/integration solutions to a pharmaceutical manufacturing client. As a result, both companies were able to offer enhanced solutions and increase their speed of delivery.

Servicepoint maintains and offers professional services, automation services, retrofit/upgrade services to Systech customers and provides Level 1 and 2 support, while Systech provides Level 3 support for the software.

“Servicepoint has a solid network of over 50 professionals in Europe, which, when combined with Systech’s growing regional support, creates a large and experienced talent pool for the delivery of serialization initiatives,” states Harry Saint-Preux, Director, Global Alliances & Channels, Systech International.

“Servicepoint has extensive expertise and a long history automating hundreds of production lines for different fields of industry and European pharmaceutical manufacturers, as well as experience with track-and-trace initiatives. Systech and Servicepoint’s combined approach provides manufacturers with the solutions, services and support required to address Europe’s challenging serialization requirements,” notes Saint-Preux.

Risto Finne, chairman of the board, Servicepoint, comments, “Servicepoint is honored to enter into this partner agreement with Systech, who we consider to be the global market leader in serialization. This cooperative paves the way for numerous new business opportunities, particularly with Russian companies that need to rapidly employ serialization. Our experience in integrating modifications and upgrades of existing production lines, in addition to new, turnkey, fully-automated solutions for the serialization and packing of medical, food and other sensitive products puts us in an enviable market position.”

Servicepoint is one of only a handful of suppliers in the European market that provides an all-inclusive production automation solution including planning, installation, testing, and maintenance.

Virtual Pediatrics, “Immediate Medical Care, Virtually Anywhere” — Online Pediatric Healthcare Consults for Your Sick or Injured Child — To Launch This Month

Virtual Pediatrics (www.virtualpediatrics.com), a national pediatric telemedicine service dedicated specifically to children, provides immediate medical care to those sick or injured, without them having to leave the comfort of their home. Certified family and pediatric health care providers, through online webcam consultation, provide personalized treatment plans, including e-prescriptions if needed. Virtual Pediatrics is set to launch in 10 states (AZ, CA, FL, GA, IL, NJ, NY, NC, TX & VA) this month.

Virtual Pediatrics Providers

Virtual Pediatrics dedicated and compassionate providers, who are board certified, licensed and credentialed to practice in their respective state, remain on standby for consultation from the hours of 8am to 12am, seven days a week.

Why Wait?

Children no longer need to wait a day or two to see their family doctor, nor will they have to wait in a crowded office or ER waiting room with other sick patients for minor ailments. By receiving an immediate telemedicine consultation and treatment, kids won’t miss additional days of school, parents won’t have to call out from work and worry about additional lost wages, and most importantly, sick or injured children can start getting better sooner.

Save Money

The cost of a Virtual Pediatrics consultation is less than many walk-in clinic fees and insurance co-pays, especially those expensive ER copays parents often pay after hours, when their doctor’s office is closed.

What and Where Do Virtual Pediatrics Providers Treat?

Virtual Pediatrics can treat your child anywhere – home, daycare, or on vacation. This month, Virtual Pediatrics will launch in 10 states (Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Texas and Virginia). Each month, additional states will be added until Virtual Pediatrics providers are able to care for children in all 50 states. Illnesses or ailments that can be treated through online consultations include, but are not limited to:

Abrasions, Allergies, Bites & Stings, Body Aches, Bronchitis, Bruises, Burns, Colic, Cough, Croup, Dehydration, Diarrhea, Ear Ache, Fever, Flu, Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease, Headaches, Hives, Itchy Eyes, Lice, Medication Refills, Minor Head Injuries, Nasal Congestion, Nausea, Pink Eye, Rashes, Reflux, Respiratory Infections, Seasonal Allergies, Sinus Infections, Skin Infections, Sore Throat, Sprains & Strains, Travel Medications, Urinary Tract Infections (Only for Older Kids), Vomiting

How Does It Work?

Parents can go to www.virtualpediatrics.com and click “start visit”, after which they will be directed to the registration page of our partner company, MeMD. Once the secure patient account is created, parents complete a brief medical history form for their child and submit payment, at which point they are directed to a patient care coordinator who will arrange the consultation between patient and healthcare provider. Upon completion of the webcam consultation, a Virtual Pediatrics provider will provide an individual treatment plan for the child’s ailment and, if needed, e-prescribe any medication to a local pharmacy that the family selected during the registration process. After the visit is concluded, parents can login to the patient account and print their child’s medical record as well as discharge instructions for their specific condition.

Leading Edge of Pediatric Healthcare

Virtual Pediatrics is working toward becoming the national leader in pediatric telemedicine, while providing excellent medical care to children and families in need. In this era of social media and advanced video technology, the practice of medicine is constantly evolving, and Virtual Pediatrics is at the frontier of this rapidly developing area of pediatric healthcare.

Night Time Pediatrics Group That Focuses On Free Care For Medicaid Families Opens It’s Third Clinic In Dallas Metroplex

Pediamed will open in a new location in Dallas Texas. Pediamed Children’s Night Clinics provide the opportunity for Medicaid families to bring their children in for FREE acute care and not have to take time off from work. In addition, the clinics will help the state as a whole, by reducing the traffic of non-urgent visits to the emergency room.

With the growing concern of misuse of the emergency room Pediamed Pediatric Night Clinics has opened it’s 3rd location in the Dallas Metroplex area. The clinic will be located at 3535 Buckner, Suite 100, Dallas TX and will be open 6pm to 10pm 7 days a week Monday- Friday 6pm to 10pm and Sat-Sun 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Pediamed focuses on serving the Medicaid population. Most Medicaid visits are free. Medicaid families are often forced to use the emergency room for common ailments, such as coughs and colds. They are forced to visit the emergency department because of the shortage of Medicaid providers in lower income areas of Dallas. The Parent can not afford to take the time off from work so the Parent exercises the emergency room as their only Medicaid option.

“Our goals are to ensure that sick children are tended to quickly in a comfortable environment,” says Guillermo Acosta, CEO of Pedi360. “We also want parents to stop the overuse of the emergency room and save it for real emergencies.”

In North Texas, Pediamed has entered into a contractual relationship with Parkland Community Health Plan in providing acute care to their Medicaid and CHIP members, representing close to 200,000 enrolled members within Dallas County.

“We project that Pediamed will be providing care for over 70,000 patient visits per year by the end of 2014,” Don McCoy, Pedi360 COO stated. “We are confident this after hours care alternative will help reduce non-emergent visits to the hospital emergency room and lower the cost of the Texas Medicaid program.”

Minion Mayhem at Scrivens Opticians

Scrivens Opticians has teamed up with the stars of the Despicable Me 2 film, the mischievous Minions – famous for their goggle specs – to encourage parents to take their children for regular eye tests.

To celebrate the release of the hilarious animated adventure on DVD and Blu-ray (25th November), youngsters who take the Minion approved eye test at their local Scrivens branch will receive a special certificate and, if they need glasses, can choose from a range officially approved by the goggle-wearing characters.

The new campaign has been launched after figures from the Health & Social Care Information Centre* showed eye examination rates among under 15s had fallen to a 10 year low. If unchecked, poor eyesight can affect children’s education as well as their overall development, so the Minions have been enlisted to help raise awareness of the importance of regular check-ups.

Scrivens Opticians optometrist Paul Sidhu said: “We’re very excited to be working with the mischievous little Minions from Despicable Me 2, who are favourites with all the family. We want to create an adventure in store which children will remember and take away with them. Ultimately, we’re encouraging kids and parents alike to have an enjoyable experience that will inspire them to return and have regular eye checks, to help keep their eyes healthy for life.”

The initiative runs until Christmas and to encourage the whole family to look after their eyesight, any parent who brings their child for a Minion approved test will receive 50% off their own standard eye test.

By booking a Minion approved eye test customers can enter a prize draw to win a UK family adventure break** where the kids will train to be secret agents like Gru and Lucy in Despicable Me 2, or a copy of the film on 3D Blu-rayâ„¢.

Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care was established 75 years ago and remains a family run business today with 146 high street branches nationwide. For more information, visitwww.scrivensopticians.com

Leading Veterinary Group with over 70 Vets in London Releases New YouTube Video

The Goddard Veterinary Group consists of over 70 vets in London, three dedicated veterinary hospitals and a wealth of other services to provide dedicated care for clients and their pets. Their new YouTube video showcases their practice and friendly staff. Goddard Veterinary Group started with just two practices in East London in 1952, fast forward 61 years to the release of their “Vets in London” YouTube video, they now boast 47 surgeries including three veterinary hospitals, as well as a pathology laboratory, a hydrotherapy unit, boarding kennels and cattery.

Regional Manager and Head Vet, Jeremy Stewart explains, “Here at the Goddard Veterinary Group, we’re very lucky. We’ve been a practice running for the last sixty years and we are a successful practice. That enables us to have the financial ability to reinvest and that is investing in the hospitals, in the branches, in the staff that we employ, enabling us to provide the best level of clinical care that we can for our patients.”

What started as a family run business in 1952 has expanded and grown over the years. The practice is still privately owned and is managed and staffed by a caring, hard-working and dedicated team. Julie Driscoll, the Head Receptionist at one of their practices says, “I like the fact that it’s a small family run business that although it’s grown as a whole, it still retains that individual feel.”

Their YouTube video showcases their Wanstead Veterinary Hospital, which was the first of three hospitals to be established by the Goddard Veterinary Group. Each hospital supports their local veterinary surgeries and they are open all year round, 24 hours a day. Jeremy Robinson, the Goddard Veterinary Group’s General Manager says, “Each surgery is fully equipped with surgical facilities and offers a personal, friendly yet professional service. Our network of branches is fully supported by our veterinary hospitals. These offer specialist referrals, as well as being open 24 hours a day.”

The referrals are available to all Goddard Veterinary Group practices and all other vets in London via a veterinary surgeon. They offer referrals in neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology and diagnostic imagining. Each of their referral disciplines have an RCVS or European Recognised Specialist. Tom Flynn, the Clinical Director says, “We have several Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons specialists and diplomats in a wide variety of disciplines and that gives us the ability to offer the highest level of expertise.” Goddard Veterinary Group also benefits from a veterinary physiotherapist, who is based at Stone Lion Hospital.

The Goddard Veterinary Group are dedicated to giving their clients and pets the highest level of care possible and so offer training courses to all of the vets that they employ. “As a vet at Goddard Veterinary Group, I feel it’s a great place to work. It gives me the opportunities to further my career. I’ve had numerous training courses and it means I can provide a high level of care to my clients and to my pets that I see.” says Ruth Gloster, a Branch Surgery Vet from their Putney practice.

Tom Flynn adds, “We recognise that each pet is a unique individual and a really important member of the family. Working with our vets in London, we can form the best plan possible to keep that pet as healthy as possible for as long as possible.”

EMS Healthcare’s recent work supporting better healthcare, closer to home

The prospect for major investment in new healthcare estates looks slim as the strategy to bring care closer to people’s homes becomes reality. Keith Austin, managing partner at EMS-Healthcare has looked at how the switch to community care is raising standards nationwide:

“Private Finance 2, which sets out a new approach to financing the building and maintenance of public infrastructure, will be used to build the next generation of hospitals. But despite its announcement at the end of last year there has been little movement to invest in new healthcare estates.

“The delay isn’t just about money or red tape; there is the wider strategy to consider of moving away from care delivered in hospitals to providing care closer to people’s homes.”

Keith continued, with how EMS Healthcare in particular helps address the costs involved with this kind of shift in patient care: “The scale of investment necessary to meet this ideal is much smaller than that required for developing new large scale hospital sites. But this isn’t the only benefit. We have been working with numerous private and public sector organisations to facilitate care in the community via medical trailer solutions and have been inspired by what has been delivered and the warm reception from patients and staff alike… To say the benefits can be life changing is not an overstatement.”

One stand out project for EMS Healthcare has been to fit out and supply Clatterbridge Cancer Centre with a state-of-the-art mobile chemotherapy facility. Since the beginning of the year the medical trailer has been improving patient care by making treatment as accessible and easy as possible, serving around 25 people daily from the Chester area in a Tesco car park.

“Perhaps an unlikely site for life-saving treatment, but the feedback from patients has been overwhelmingly positive. The bespoke medical trailer houses six chemotherapy stations with preparation, reception and waiting areas. Patients feel a real sense of community and ownership while attending the clinic and the environment has been described as ‘warm and cosy’ with a ‘more jovial atmosphere’.”

Other initiatives that EMS Healthcare have been involved in include a medical trailer eye clinic which helped medical consultants save the sight of thousands of patients across the East Coast of the UK, while saving them a trip of up to 84 miles for treatment. A temporary renal dialysis medical trailer unit has also saved patients in North Wales hours of travel every week, helping to improve their quality of life.

Thousands of patients across the UK are making long journeys to receive specialist treatment. These unique facilities provide a solution to help reduce the cost, burden and strain of travelling while delivering first class care. Waiting time is minimal too, making the experience less tiring, and a more familiar location helps put patients at ease.

The evidence is clear on why healthcare providers are taking their care closer to people’s homes. This patient-centric approach is set to continue and Keith – and EMS Healthcare – are proud to be part of it.

Smoking, Obesity And Lack Of Activity Named As Global Killers

Research published in leading medical journal The Lancet suggests that a lack of exercise can be as big a killer as obesity and smoking.

According to the study, approximately one third of adults do not do a healthy amount of exercise, and it is suggested that this could be causing 5.3 million deaths worldwide each year – the equivalent of one in ten deaths – from related illnesses such as breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Nutritionist Caron Leckie, who works for the UK’s largest provider of chef prepared meals and delivered diets, Diet Chef, comments: “In my experience the weather has a big impact on activity levels, certainly in the UK, and many people use it as an excuse to stay indoors and watch television, rather than getting out and about.

“In addition to this, thousands of our customers have jobs which see them sitting down at a desk for up to nine hours each day. It is logical that this sedentary lifestyle can be conducive to obesity.”

Ms Leckie also added that Diet Chef is “working hard to help people to lose weight with our calorie-controlled diet” and that as a company they are also “working closely with a personal trainer to offer advice and tips on how to move more, no matter what your age, weight or health status.”

It is recommended that adults should do a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, this equates to just over 20 minutes per day.

According to a report by the BBC, “researchers said the problem was now so bad it should be treated as a pandemic”.

Ms Leckie’s top tips for motivation to exercise include:
1. Add An Activity
2. Try Something Different
3. Find a Positive Each Week
4. Take up a Hobby

Mesa AZ Dentist Views Banner Health Through The Eyes Of A Child Program Sponsorship

During the last 30 years of providing dental care throughout the Mesa community, the Robison Dental Group has continued to give back o the nonprofit health organizations serving local residents.

This month our staff gave recognition to one of the nonprofit organizations serving the Mesa community. After hearing so much about the programs Banner Health offers through our patients, many who are Banner Health employees, one just tugged at the hearts so much that our entire staff simply said “That’s The One”. It was unanimous. Charlotte, our Office Manger of 25 years, and the entire staff were so excited, the next thing I knew, there was a shopping list for gift bags and an assembly line in our lunchroom.

“Through The Eyes Of A Child” – A Cardon Children’s Medical Center Program Banner Health responded to the needs of our children who were unable to attend school during treatment. Six years ago, Banner Desert Hospital started a program for schooling and the transition back to school. In 2009 the school was relocated to the Cardon Children’s Medical Center, which now serves over 1000 children each year. The program is staffed and managed year round

The teachers at Cardon school act as advocates for each student, communicating with the child’s teachers and school officials .Having the knowledge and experience to know what each child is entitled to, “Through The Eyes Of A Child”.

The school provides a “Re-Entering” phase where a teacher or counselor will accompany the child back into the child’s home school or classroom to provide answers for the teacher and fellow classmates. This is a very emotionally sensitive process that requires the skills and experience of the Program Staff.

The hospital was designed to look and feel as close as possible to home. Each room is equipped with a dining table, small refrigerator, and bathroom. There is a convenient laundry facility available for parent’s personal use.

We want to thank Sue Eaton, MSW, CCLs and Senior Manager Child Life, for the tour and opportunity to be a part of this great organization, and most certainly, the banner employees who speak so highly of Banner Health

We are proud of Banner Health, and we know our gifts and money for our sponsorship is serving one of the best causes we all stand for, “giving back to the community and our precious children within it”.

Sierra Vista AZ. Dentist Drives Costs Down With “Smile-A-Mile” That Pays Your Gas

Dr. Steve Wolfington, of Cochise Caring Dentistry in Sierra Vista, AZ. announces their “Smile-A-Mile Program” that reimburses Cochise County Arizona Residents for gas used in round trip visits to their Sierra Vista dentist office.

Dr. Wolfington states, ”with the continued high price of gas, Cochise County residents are now paying an average of $3.73 per gallon, and with many patients a round trip visit can be up to 70 miles or more.

We have many patients traveling to our dental office in Sierra Vista, AZ. from Benson, Bisbee, Douglas and other outlying cities in Cochise County, even as far as Tucson. Our dental office has been in this location for over 30 years, and many staff members have treated and cared for 2 and 3 generations of our patient’s family and friends. They drive here because they want the comfort of knowing they are in the same good hands as many of their family and friends have for so long.

We were compelled to do something to maintain the comfort level our patients enjoy and for new patients as well, and we want to keep it that way. My wife Liz and I wanted to find a way we could help off-set the high cost of gas, and we came up with a simple program to help out our patients, “Smile-A-Mile”.

Smile-A-Mile reimburses patients for the round trip cost of gas

Our “Smile-A-Mile” Program reimburses our patients for their round trip cost of gas for each visit. We calculated the mileage from each of the cities like Benson, Douglas, Tombstone, Bisbee and more, to our Sierra Vista, AZ Dentist Office. We used the average miles per gallon that a typical family vehicle gets according to statistics, the average cost of per gallon of gas throughout Cochise County Arizona, and came up with our “Smile-A-Mile Program”. As an example, our Benson Arizona Patients are now being reimbursed $7.00 for each and every visit to our Sierra Vista Dental office, and all they need to do is bring in a water, electricity or phone bill to show proof of residence”.

We asked Dr. Wolfington “What about people with more than one family member or friend being treated, how are they reimbursed”?

“We kept it simple as we could; it is reimbursed per patient, so as to support car pooling. If there are 3 patients in one visit, it is three times the gas reimbursement amount. The amount to be reimbursed is credited to their individual treatment upon payment for services. We have placed the rates of reimbursement for 8 cities on our new Cochise Caring Dentistry website, and if anyone outside of these cities would like to become a patient and join the Smile-A-Mile Program, all they have to do is contact us, tell us what city their traveling from and we’ll respond with the amount.”

Sleep Disruption Linked to Alzheimer’s Risk

A full night of sleep is needed for good health but as a Bethesda sleep apnea dentist I know many people have sleep that is disrupted throughout the night. A new study shows that people who have disrupted sleep were more likely to be at risk for memory problems and Alzheimer’s disease.

According to study author Dr. Yo-El Ju “Disrupted sleep appears to be associated with the build-up of amyloid plaques, a hallmark marker of Alzheimer’s disease, in the brains of people without memory problems. Further research is needed to determine why this is happening and whether sleep changes may predict cognitive decline.” The study showed that people who slept soundly throughout the night were 5 times less likely to have the plaque buildup. The researchers are not sure of the direction of the relationship, whether the sleep disruption is causing the brain changes or if brain changes are disrupting sleep. More research will be needed.

Sleep can be disrupted for any number of reasons; a barking dog, insomnia, a bed partner’s loud snoring or sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is especially dangerous because it affects the sleep of the person with the disease and also disrupts the sleep of that persons bed partner. The loud snoring and gasping throughout the night are not remembered by the sleep apnea patient but the spouse can describe the entire night in great detail. If you experience loud snoring and daytime tiredness you may have obstructive sleep apnea.

Please contact Bethesda sleep medicine dentist, Dr. Bernard L. Greenbaum at 301-530-3600 to arrange for your screening for obstructive sleep apnea.
