In recent years, the FDA has begun implementing tighter regulations for medications that previously could be obtained easily, off the shelf at any drug store. Yet, many states are pushing for even tighter regulations of non-prescription medications, such as those used to treat colds and flu.

“Cold and flu medications are useful for their intended application, however they can be altered and used for illegal purposes,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “That’s the main reason that the FDA began monitoring the purchase of those substances. Individuals were buying these types of medication in large quantities and modifying them to manufacture illegal meth. Obviously, the tighter regulations have severely limited individuals’ ability to obtain these substances, however there will always be a way to circumnavigate almost any regulation. That’s why many states are considering legislature to require a physician’s prescription for these types of medications. Only time will tell if such measures will be passed and effective in combating the war on drugs and, particularly, meth labs.”
