Brain Imaging Shows Analgesic Effect Of Meditation

Research published in the Journal of Neuroscience indicates that meditation has more potent pain-relieving effects on the brain than morphine or other pain-relieving drugs that reduce pain by 25 per cent. This study is the first to show dramatic reduction in both the brain activation related to pain, and the experience of pain itself.

“We found a big effect – about a 40 per cent reduction in pain intensity and a 57 per cent reduction in pain unpleasantness,” said lead author of the study, Fadel Zeidan, Ph D and post-doctoral research fellow at Wake Forest Medical Centre.

During the study, 15 healthy volunteers without prior experience of meditation attended four 20-minute classes on a type of meditation technique called focused attention. In this type of mindfulness, practitioners attend to their breath and release distracting emotions and thoughts.

Utilising arterial spin labelling magnetic resonance imaging (ASL MRI), the researchers examined participants’ brain activity. ASL MRI captures longer interval brain processes, including meditation, than a regular brain function MRI scan. Scans done before and after meditation training showed activity in the primary somatosensory cortex of the brain significantly dropping from very high to undetectable; this area creates the sensation of intensity and location of a painful stimulus.

The participants had pain induced in their right legs with a device that heated a tiny patch of their skin over 5 minutes to 120° F, a temperature painful to most people. Scans done on participants after meditation instruction showed decreased pain ratings in every participant, with a reduction range of 11 per cent to 93 per cent.

Interestingly, meditation caused increase in activity in the anterior insula, orbito-frontal cortex and the anterior cingulate cortex areas of the brain. Robert Coghill PhD, associate professor of neurobiology and anatomy at Wake Forest Baptist and senior author of the study said, “These areas all shape how the brain builds an experience of pain from nerve signals that are coming in from the body.”

He explained that increased activation of these areas by meditation corresponded to improved pain reduction. “One of the reasons that meditation may have been so effective in blocking pain was that it did not work at just one place in the brain, but instead reduced pain at multiple levels of processing.”

Speaking about the huge potential of meditation for use in clinical settings, Zeidan and his associates highlighted the briefness of the training needed to cause a dramatic pain-relieving effect. “This study shows that meditation produces real effects in the brain and can provide an effective way for people to substantially reduce their pain without medications,” said Zeidan.

Pennsylvania Dental Implants Office Takes Whole-Body Approach with Wellness Center

Dr. David DiGiallorenzo has a Pennsylvania dental implants announced the opening date for a wellness center associated with his Collegeville, PA periodontist‘s practice.

Located at 184 W. Main St., this center will open Jan. 1 and will offer medical facials, organic dermal fillers, acupuncture, cranial-sacral therapy, massage, heavy metal detox, infrared sauna, massage therapy, reflexology and reiki.

“Oral health and overall health can be enhanced in a number of ways besides traditional medical treatment,” said DiGiallorenzo, a LANAP provider who offers teeth/ bone grafting and crown lengthening procedures. “This wellness center is slated to provide therapies that improve well-being.”

Gum disease is a chronic inflammatory disease, and many people are at risk for other complications. Obese patients, diabetics, and those with high blood pressure and cholesterol risk getting gum disease.

“We take a whole-body approach to periodontics,” he said. “By providing stress reduction, detoxification, and services to feel and look better, we’re offering positive tools for one’s state of being.”

The center will provide infrared sauna and chelation for heavy metal detoxification. Many patients endure full oral detoxification, making it a perfect time to balance the system and cleanse all organs’ systems. Heavy metals exist in nearly everyone’s bodies from eating non-organic foods, smoking, cooking in aluminum cookware or foil, or because of amalgam dental fillings, stated Natural News.

DiGiallorenzo suggests detoxification during dental reconstruction to eliminate metals from the gastrointestinal tract and balance the body. Nutrition, herbal medicine and supplementation will be offered at the wellness center.

Varicose Vein Treatment Offers Multi-Million Savings For Hard-Pressed NHS

As the pressure on the NHS to find efficiency savings increases, several trusts are looking to adopt a pioneering approach to varicose vein treatment that saves resources, while improving patient outcomes.

If adopted by all hospitals, The VNUS Closure procedure for the treatment of varicose veins, endorsed by the NHS National Innovation Centre, could save the health service around £17million.

The major benefits for the NHS lie in the fact that this procedure is much less resource-intensive than surgery. Conventional varicose vein stripping is a common operation, and one that takes up a great deal of operating theatre time.

The VNUS Closure procedure, however, can be carried-out in a treatment room, freeing up surgical theatres, enabling the NHS to treat other serious conditions more quickly and so reduce waiting-times.

It is said that as many as one in three adults in the UK suffers from venous reflux or varicose veins at some point in their life, and varicose vein treatment is one of the most common hospital procedures.

Almost 90,000 varicose vein operations were carried-out by the NHS in 2005-06, while approximately 20,000 similar operations were conducted privately, producing a total of around 110,000 procedures per year.

As long ago as 1999, a study conducted by the University of Edinburgh, put the total cost to the NHS at between £400m and £600m.

It is difficult to compare accurately the direct costs of conventional surgery and VNUS Closure. However, as the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic without an overnight stay, and performed with minimal staff in a simple treatment room, this technique offers significant benefits for the NHS.

Cost savings are estimated to be between £40 and £450 per patient, depending on whether or not the patient requires an overnight stay.

The VNUS Closure is also expected to bring benefits to the wider economy, with patients being able to return to work almost immediately after their procedure with little or no pain.

Pioneering Varicose Vein Treatment Gets Patients Back On Their Feet In No Time

Varicose veins can be painful and unsightly, with treatment often meaning surgery under general anaesthetic and a long recovery period.

While the traditional surgical approach has meant painful vein stripping, many UK hospitals now offer minimally invasive catheter technology that enables even severe varicose veins to be successfully treated in an outpatient setting, under a local anaesthetic.

Taking just a few minutes, a device is inserted into the diseased vein, where a catheter or fibre delivers either radio frequency or laser energy to heat and seal the vessel. The technique is extremely successful and far less painful and traumatic to the patient than vein stripping.

Endovenous laser (EVL) devices utilise an optical fibre to deliver extremely high levels of heat – over 700 degrees centigrade – that boils the blood in the vein to create a clotting effect that seals the vein as the device is withdrawn.

Radiofrequency devices operate at far lower temperatures to heat and shrink the vein walls, limiting the impact on surrounding tissues and, according to a clinical study, causing significantly less pain and bruising than laser.

Vascular surgeons using the VNUS® ClosureFAST™ catheter, the only radiofrequency device on the market today for the treatment of venous reflux, report that most patients return to normal activity almost immediately following the procedure, with little or no post-operative pain.

Radiofrequency endovenous ablation is a minimally invasive procedure for treating venous reflux disease, using Radiofrequency to heat and seal diseased veins, thereby reducing or eliminating existing varicose veins.

With the VNUS® ClosureFAST™ catheter, radiofrequency energy is delivered through a heating element seven centimetres long, to heat the collagen within the vein walls and cause the shrinkage and collapse of the vessel.

The closure procedure is generally performed using local anaesthesia, typically in a hospital theatre or an outpatient facility.

A ClosureFASTâ„¢ catheter is inserted into the vein through a tiny incision below the knee. Guided by ultrasound imaging, the vascular surgeon treats each 7cm segment of vein with a 20-second burst of radiofrequency energy, causing the vessel to shrink around the catheter.

The vascular surgeon withdraws the catheter, treating each segment until the entire vessel has been sealed. On average, 45cm of vein can be treated in three to five minutes.

In a clinical trial comparing Closure to laser, patients treated with Closure experienced less pain, less bruising and fewer complications, while a
one-year clinical data has shown the ClosureFASTâ„¢ catheter to be more than 97.4% effective in preventing reflux recurrence.

Revolutionary Treatment Could Mean End For Varicose Vein Surgery

A revolutionary new treatment for varicose veins is proving a successful alternative to surgery.

The VNUS ClosureFast catheter is a minimally invasive alternative treatment, which doctors claim, results in less pain and bruising than traditional vein stripping surgery.

Using the Closure system, doctors close the diseased veins by inserting the closure catheter into a vein and heating the vein wall using temperature-controlled RF energy. As it is catheter-based, it results in little to no scarring.

Heating the vein wall causes collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close. After the vein is sealed shut, blood then naturally reroutes to healthy veins.

Dr Thomas Proebstle, a dermatologist and expert in venous diseases, said: “Beauty treatments and aesthetic surgery is on the increase all over the world. Quite often, this is associated with risky procedures, some pain and lengthy courses of wound healing.

“With this new, less-invasive approach, the procedure is much more gentle and smoother. The risks are much lower and the pain is kept to a low level, plus it can be administered under local anesthetic.”

Dr Proebstle, who is Professor for Dermatology at University of Pecs in Hungary, added: “Obviously this type of treatment does not need to be performed in a theatre or hospital, which improves its cost-effectiveness. It can easily be performed in an outpatient setting with the right medical facilities.”

The results of a recently published three-year-study carried out at eight european centres, which involved 225 outpatients, showed a huge success rate for the treatment.

The study showed that between 12 and 24 months after the treatment, 96.4 per cent of patients reported they had no pain. After 24 months, that number had increased to more than 99 per cent.

VNUS Closure Procedure to save NHS ‘millions’

As the NHS faces budget restrictions, a non-surgical treatment for varicose veins (http://www.vnus.co.uk) has the potential to save the NHS millions of pounds.

Government ministers have promised that frontline services will be protected from cuts, but the NHS Confederation believes that this is unlikely to be achieved given the scale of the savings needed.

It estimates that the health service will have to make savings of £20bn over the next four years, as demand for healthcare continues to grow but increases in funding come to an end.

It is estimated that the VNUS Closure Procedure could potentially save the NHS £17 million, while helping 7,000 patients avoid further treatment due to failed alternative methods.

“This procedure has enabled many NHS Trusts throughout the country to take a very common operation out of the operating theatre and into treatment rooms, helping to free-up theatres for other cases,” said, Michael Branagan-Harris, Group Manager for NHS Medical Device Market Access For Innovative Medical Devices.

The VNUS Closure Procedure involves a hospital stay of just a couple of hours, treatment under local, rather than general anaesthetic, and a much faster recovery time.

Most patients undergoing a VNUS procedure walk out of the treatment room unaided and are usually able to return home and resume work within a day, with little or no pain.

For the NHS, the procedure is also much less resource-intensive than surgery. Conventional varicose vein stripping is a common operation, taking-up a great deal of operating theatre time.

For same costs, a further 25,000 patients could be treated earlier and avoid pain, or discomfort.

As the VNUS Closure procedure can be carried-out in a treatment room, it has the potential to free-up theatre-time, enabling the NHS to treat other serious conditions more quickly and so reduce waiting-times.

KISS Star Gene Simmons’ Therapist On His Issues: ‘Do I Have To Pick Just One?’

Dr. Ann Wexler is a Beverly Hills-based psychologist specializing in couples therapy. She is currently appearing onGene Simmons Family Jewels, where she has been helping theKISS star and his longtime partner Shannon Tweed sort through their relationship troubles. In a new interview with Examiner.com, when asked to identify Simmons’ primary therapy issue Wexler quipped, “Wow. Do I have to pick just one?”

On a more serious note she said, “When I very first met him, I thought, ‘Wow, we really need to break through this rock star persona, this TV persona. We have to break through this and I need to find out who he really is. I need to get to who he really is for us to do real work.’ And it turned out that he really did let me in, but I didn’t know if he was going to.”

Dr. Wexler said that Simmons’ public displays of cockiness are actually a front to cover up insecurities that stem from his father abandoning him when he was a child. “I believe that insecurity has stayed with him his whole life,” she stated. “Even though he’s been so hugely successful, and he’s so talented, he still has this feeling deep inside of having to prove that he’s the man. And I think that’s why he sometimes comes off with an overblown self-confidence.”

The show’s season finale airs Tuesday night, and previews show Simmons finally proposing to Tweed after 28 years of being, as he terms it, “happily unmarried.” Wexler said that despite the hard work she’s done with the couple, the decision whether to stay together or go their separate ways has to come from them. “I don’t have an agenda as a psychologist. It’s not my place to determine whether a couple should stay together or be apart,” she observed. “I work with the couple based on what they each express, what they each need and want, both as individuals and as a couple. “

ExpresShine has a proven record of excellent customer service and training programs for customers.

ExpresShine teeth whitening kits come in glamorous, individually packaged kits that can be easily displayed in storefronts. Our whitening kits are superior to others on the market because the ingredients are concentrated. The gels are made fresh in California at a FDA certified dental lab. Hydrogen Peroxide gels are not easy to make and cheaper gels will break down and separate quickly. Making H202 gel is like crafting a fine wine. It takes the highest concentration of H202 (so the gel won’t separate), a balanced PH, and water base for strong yet gentle whitening. In fact, it took our lab 7 months to create gels that have a shelf life of 18 months- the highest of any H202 gel on the market. Carbamide has this shelf life, but it doesn’t whiten as well. Each kit includes a bib, teeth wipe, transparent, form fitting mouth tray or paint-on brush tip and cheek retractor and 12% or 16% hydrogen peroxide gel that is made in the USA in an FDA registered, CE certified dental alb. The kit also includes rubber gloves and vitamin E swabs to reduce gum sensitivity. The syringes and gels are made exclusively for ExpresShine and include photo activator and the rubber plunger is removed so there is no chance for gel contamination from corroded rubber.

Life Line Screening Reveals Private Health Screening Survey

Life Line Screening has published the results of its private health screening survey.

Private health screening is becoming increasingly popular in the UK & Ireland. Whilst there are metrics on the benefits of screenings in detecting potentially life-threatening conditions early, and thereby preventing conditions such as Stroke and cardiovascular disease, Life Line Screening’s report aims to provide more evidence relating to the effects of screenings on modifying behavioural change.

One area of debate about health screening is that certain types of health screening can lead to “false reassurance”. An individual who has a screening may gain the impression that they have a clean bill of health if no risk factors have been identified. As a result, they may choose to pay less attention to their health overall and lead a less healthy lifestyle than they would otherwise have done. This research aims to look further at this hypothesis and gauge a better understanding of the motivations of individuals who have health screenings, based on evidence rather than subjective judgements. It aims to understand the proportions of individuals who choose to improve their health as well as the number of people who choose not to.

136 people who had Life Line Screening health screenings were surveyed in July 2010 by a researcher from Addenbrookes Hospital. They were invited to answers questions based on their perceptions on health and lifestyle changes as a result of having had a screening.

When asked “Did going for a screening make you think more about your health?” 77% of responders answered yes. Participants were then asked if they have made any positive changes to their lifestyle following their screening. 51% stated they had started eating more healthily, 45% stated they had started exercising more than before (and 18% of the total had tried a new exercise), 35% reported losing weight, 71% had focused on keeping weight at a healthy level, 60% were careful about alcohol consumption, 52% commented that they were controlling their stress levels, 30% reported they had read more health-focussed publications and 74% paid more attention to their overall health.

Only 7% of all responders commented that they had led less-healthy lifestyle following their screening.

The full report on the impact of health screening on lifestyle change is available on the Life Line Screening website in PDF format.

Will the Catholic Church & the U.S. Courts Embrace Advanced Cell Technologies “Embryo-Safe” Technique Using Embryonic Stem Cells?

Advanced Cell Technology with laboratory facilities in Marlborough Massachusetts has pioneered a solution to the ethical, moral & legal debate raging in regards to protection of a human embryo. ACT has developed the “single-blastomere” technique. Patent Number 7,893,315 a non-destructive alternative for deriving human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines.

This achievement in Regenerative medicine is a ground breaking feat for both Catholic and U.S. law.
• The 1995 encyclical The Gospel of Life, of which Pope John Paul II wrote: “Human embryos obtained in vitro are human beings and are subjects with rights; their dignity and right to life must be respected from the first moment of their existence. It is immoral to produce human embryos destined to be exploited as disposable ‘biological material'” (1,5 )
• The Dickey Amendment (also known as the Dickey-Wicker Amendment) is the name of an appropriation bill rider attached to a bill passed by United States Congress in 1995, and signed by former President Bill Clinton, which prohibits the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from using appropriated funds for the creation of human embryos for research purposes or for research in which human embryos are destroyed.

The single-blastomere technology uses a one-cell biopsy approach similar to pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which is widely used in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process and does not interfere with the embryo’s developmental potential. The stem cells generated using this approach are healthy, completely normal, and differentiate into all the cell types of the human The safety record for one-cell biopsy as part of PGD now has a 15-year track record, and is carried out routinely as part of IVF processes around the world. ACT’s technique of protecting the human embryo from harm can be expounded to the smallest blood transfusion in the world. As does a human being give millions of blood cells in a pint of blood so does ACT’s “single blastomere” process take but “one cell” from a 2 day old embryo. As the blood removed from a human donor “regenerate” the removed pint of blood so does the human embryo “regenerate” the one cell. Both of these procedures leave the human body & two day old embryo healthy. Both procedures are similar in that they both provide life saving material to those whom need them most to due to disease and other aliments of a medical nature.

Advanced Cell Technology not too long ago was the predominant leader in the field of regenerative medicine. It fell from that distinction in part due to executive management hubris and ultimately the credit crisis in mid-2008. ACT was able to resurrect itself from near bankruptcy in June 2008 and now has the distinction of holding two out of the three FDA approved (hESC) trials. ACT is led by a competent executive management team and employs several of the most predominant regenerative researcher(s) in the world.

• Filed a European Clinical Trial Application for Phase 1/2 study using (hESC) to treat macular degeneration
• Issued a broad patent for hESC-derived RPE cells in China
• Seeking funding & joint venture partner for Myoblast program for the treatment of cardiovascular disease Phase 2 approved by the FDA
• Joint ventured with Korean medical giant CHA to form “Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine International” (SCRMI). This partnership expected to file an investigational new drug application (IND) with the FDA in Q-4 of this year. CHA biotech is waiting for final approval from the Korea Food and Drug Administration for (hESC) trial for AMD
• Issued patent on its “single-blastomere” technique. Patent Number 7,893,315 broadly covers ACT’s proprietary single-blastomere technology that provides a non-destructive alternative for deriving hESC lines. This “Embryo-Safe” one-cell biopsy approach similar to pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), which is widely used in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process and does not interfere with the embryo’s developmental potential

New Website Dedicated To Stem Cell Investors

Investor Stem Cell (http://www.investorstemcell.com) is dedicated to bringing investors and stakeholders together in thoughtful discussion to educate and publicize the incredible medical advancements taking place in the regenerative medicine sector. Scientists are using stem cells both (hESC) and (iPSC) in hopes of easing the suffering of hundreds of millions of people world wide.

Our society is on the verge of a quantum leap moment in time thanks to regenerative medicine.

Regenerative medicine and Stem Cell research:

Utter those words at your next dinner party or casual gathering of friends and family. You will receive a concoction of half-truth’s and out right fallacy responses. Stem Cell research conjures images of futuristic Star–Trek like preservation chambers, human looking ears protruding oddly from the backs of mice, or worse yet an image of a late term fetus. Nothing could be farther from the truth when entering the reality of Regenerative medicine.

Never before has this area of research been more exciting and promising than right now. There is a medical revolution brewing, and like any revolution, there are those who want to suppress this uprising for continued personal and ideological gains. If we were to take all the major advances in the past 500 years of human medical history and multiply its effect by 10 fold it still would not compare to the paradigm shift in health care delivery that the world may witness in this decade using stem cells. Imagine that an $800,000 heart transplant is no longer needed and that instead the same money spent on one patient can now be stretched out to treat 20 patients who are needing a heart transplant. Is this what Regenerative medicine has in the offing? Only time will tell. Our healthcare system could very well be on the verge of a quantum leap moment thanks to regenerative medicine.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized 3 trials using human embryonic stem cells (hESC) in late 2010. Validation of hESC research efforts and the culmination of billions spent on research are coming to fruition. FDA validation for the treatments of spinal cord injury and age related macular degeneration is expected in 2011. It may be the shot heard around the world event sometime in late Q-4 2011 for the Regenerative medicine sector.

Women’s Level One Weekend Mindfulness Retreat, Rome, GA: June 17-19, 2011

“It’s almost normal today to feel as if you have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). We’re all suffering from stimulation overload and sensory exhaustion” says Pamela Barge, MS, LPC, NCC, Director of Personal Coaching & Psychotherapy Associates, LLC dba Personal Coaching & Psychotherapy for Women. This is what led Pam to put together her special weekend mindfulness retreats which she offers to professional colleagues as sanctioned continuing education programs as well as to the general public.

“These special weekends are offered as a special time away…a time to check out from the world and into ourselves for a time”. With sunrise and candlelight yoga, tai chi, delicious plant based meals, mindful consideration of what the Buddhists call ‘Noble Silence’, opportunities to practice sitting and walking meditation as well as stimulating group discussions with like-minded folks, this may be just the ticket to slow things down and to become more connected with yourself and with life.

Pamela Barge, LPC, has a background as a marketing executive and independent entrepreneur. This business background together with her training as a therapist and her own practice of mindful meditation gives her therapy and coaching practice its unique flavor. The theoretical foundation of her work is founded upon the tenets of mindfulness and the evidence-based works of such folks as Jon Kabat Zinn, PhD, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts, Thich Nhat Hanh, world renowned and revered Buddhist monk who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King, Sharon Salzberg of the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts and His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama.

Each retreat is limited to fifteen attendees. For more information, to see an individual retreat schedule as well as her 2011 Retreat Calendar or to make a reservation, visit her website at www.womenscoaching.biz or phone Pam at 678-230-8127.
