Study Reveals Worrying Results On Sexually Transmitted Infections

According to a new study of sexual health from Lloydspharmacy – 72% of men have never had an STI screen, compared to 62% of women. Lloydspharmacy also found men were almost twice as likely to test positive for certain STIs such as chlamydia.

13% of men buying chlamydia tests from Lloydspharmacy’s Online Doctor tested positive compared to just six per cent of women.

The research from the community pharmacy chain also found that men are placing themselves at greater risk of picking up an STI with 13% of men having had unprotected sex with more than one person over the last five years, almost double that of women (7%).

With the research revealing that men are more reluctant to be tested but significantly more likely to test positive than women, the findings fuel concerns that men may be delaying testing until they are showing symptoms and that real rates of infection are significantly higher than reported.

Although men are less likely to have had a face-to-face consultation for an STI screen, according to Lloydspharmacy sales of tests online are split almost equally between men and women. This suggests that men prefer the anonymity of the online channel.

Through its Online Doctor service the community pharmacy chain has launched a postal Platinum Test for men which screens for five genital infections; genital Chlamydia, genital gonorrhoea, mycoplasma, ureaplasma and trichomonas. This confidential postal service allows men to be tested and if found to be positive, treated without the need to visit their GP.

“The lower rate of face-to-face testing and higher incidence of positive results amongst men suggests that many men may be waiting until they suspect they have an infection before getting themselves tested”, said Clare Kerr, Lloydspharmacy’s head of sexual health. “This is particularly worrying as many STIs don’t have any obvious symptoms, so men could be putting both themselves and their partners at risk by delaying tests.”

“Embarrassment is a huge barrier to testing and so we hope that removing the need to see a GP or GUM clinic face-to-face will encourage men to test themselves regularly. We can provide accurate tests for a wide range of genital infections anonymously and discreetly through the Online Doctor.”

Innovative Medical Apparel Maker Manufactures All Products Domestically, Keeps Jobs In The U.S.

“When we started Medelita, we envisioned creating a line of products that truly fulfills the purchasing preferences of our clientele. We assumed there would be a high value associated with sourcing fabric, trim and manufacturing facilities within the U.S.,” said Lara Manchik, PA-C and founder, Medelita. “Sewing in the United States is significantly more expensive and challenging than outsourcing to Asia. Yet, we made a conscious decision to support U.S.-based sewing manufacturers and thus, the U.S. economy. We hoped our customers would find great value in the ‘Made In USA’ label.

Most major scrub and lab coats retail stores, universities, private and public hospitals and the U.S. government buy imports; it is the individual physician or clinician that appreciates true quality and finishing and finds value in Medelita scrubs and lab coats. The typical Medelita customer is willing to pay a little more for a product that is guaranteed to perform and that is made domestically.

Medelita lab coats are hand-sewn in the U.S. using the highest quality fabrics, most advanced fabric treatments and feature designer touches such as inside seam finishing and contoured shaping at the sleeves, bust and hips. Engineered for easy care, Medelita lab coats and scrubs can be machine washed and emerge from the dryer with a crisp, clean and professional look. Professional dry cleaning can be used, though is not required.

Made from 100 percent high denier cotton and designed specifically with a focus on fit and functionality, Medelita’s fluid resistant lab coats are treated with Advanced Dual Action Teflon® fabric protector, which allows fabric to repel and release stains. Tailored to fit the contours of the human body, Medelita lab coats feature hidden inside pockets and finished inside seams. The High IQ® Easycare Plus helps fabric resist wrinkling and retain a soft, smooth, clean appearance. Technologically innovative, durable and fashionable, Medelita sets a new standard in professional lab coats.

Available for purchase through its web site and at medical conferences, Medelita lab coats and scrubs can be embroidered using 100% polyester threading with clinician name, credentials and hospital, practice or group custom logo. Fort Lauderdale Cosmetic Dentist Offers Waterlase Laser Dentistry

Known for being on the cutting edge of dental technology, Miami dental center Smile South Florida is giving its patients more reasons to smile than ever. Using Waterlase dentistry, Miami cosmetic dentist Dr. Charles Nottingham and his certified staff of Waterlase dentists and hygienists, take the pain out of many of dentistry’s most feared treatments.

Waterlase dentistry combines the precision of surgical lasers and the elemental power of water to gently perform several procedures that keep Smile South Florida’s patients’ teeth healthy. This treatment method can be used to handle major dental work such as filling, bondings, cavity removal, decay removal, and many more procedures.

“Whether we’re caring for the patient’s teeth, bone, or gums, Waterlase technology is always our first choice for treatment,” says the Fort Lauderdale cosmetic dentist. “The benefits are endless. From less anesthesia, to less bleeding, to fewer appointments, to improved efficiency and accuracy, we’re providing the absolute cutting edge in dentistry, and the best part is that our patients reap all the benefits.”

Whereas older procedures require cutting, scraping, and drilling, Waterlase laser dentistryuses water and laser energy with far greater accuracy than drills and scalpels. This eliminates vibrations and sounds of drilling.

“The more accurate the treatment, the more healthy tissue we preserve,” exclaims Dr. Nottingham, a Florida laser dentist. “Often with older methods healthy tooth and gum tissue is damaged during treatment. Obviously, the dental community’s job is to promote and preserve healthy teeth and gum tissue, and with the Waterlase, dentists can do just that.”

“Waterlase treatment not only removes damaged or decayed tissue more efficiently, it does so with less pain,” adds the Fort Lauderdale dentist. Because the laser essentially desensitizes nerves during treatment and pain is greatly reduced.

Physician Offers Own Brand Of Affordable Insurance Alternative

Cedar Park family medicine physician Melissa J. Urrea, M.D. believes taking care of your health shouldn’t be a difficult financial decision. And while the recently-signed Health Care Bill mandates that all individuals will be required to obtain health insurance by 2014, that still leaves several years of challenging options on how to best obtain quality medical care. That’s why she recently introduced through her practice, Trinity Family Medicine, a pre-paid package of medical services. Trinity HealthSpan â„¢ provides access to comprehensive health care to uninsured and underinsured individuals and families.

Nearly one in four Central Texas residents currently lives with inadequate or no health insurance — and that statistic is expected to rise as a result of the recession. Dr. Urrea’s plan helps to  bridge the gap between the need for and access to quality health care services.

For an annual fee of less than $800, Trinity HealthSpan â„¢ provides:

  • An annual examination (including prostate screening)
  • Lab work (including a complete metabolic panel, diabetes screening, kidney and liver function screening, electrolyte evaluation, complete blood count, anemia evaluation, thyroid function evaluation, cholesterol and lipid panel, urinalysis, urine protein evaluation)
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Tetanus vaccination
  • Influenza vaccination
  • Three routine office visits (including follow up for a particular disease/condition and sick visits)
  • Access to coordinated services (such as labs) at reduced rates

The concept for Trinity HealthSpan ™ originated when Dr. Urrea was challenged with managing the care of chronically ill individuals who had no or limited insurance or were self-employed. “For someone with a condition like diabetes, allergies or asthma, it is imperative to focus not only on disease management, but overall wellness,” said Dr. Urrea. “That involves multiple visits to a physician, along with moderate diagnostic testing to monitor the condition.”

As the recession affected more and more of her patients, Dr. Urrea consulted with her practice’s business manager to determine how they could assist their patients in maintaining regular access to care. The practice reached out to ancillary service providers like laboratories and negotiated reduced rates on behalf of patients who purchase the Trinity HealthSpan â„¢ package. Trinity HealthSpan â„¢ also connects patients with pharmacies offering low-cost, generic prescription plans. Local retailers like HEB and Target offer plans that provide medications for as little as $5 a month, which is actually less money than most insurance plan co-pays.

For an uninsured individual not participating in Trinity HealthSpan ™ , the cost of the pre-paid package of services would be $1,050. Similarly, if an insured patient paid an average of $400 per month (not including deductibles and co-pays) in insurance premiums, they could save more than $4,000 annually by enrolling in Trinity HealthSpan ™ . “Even if the patient needed X-rays or an MRI, it would still be less expensive than through their insurance plan,” said Dr. Urrea.

“As a physician and patient, I wanted to bring peace of mind to those individuals and families who can’t afford insurance but deserve state-of-the-art medical services,” added Dr. Urrea. Patients may also purchase “a la carte” customized care packages with fewer services or those related to a specific health condition. Plan financing options are also available.

Trinity Family Medicine provides care for the entire family, including pediatrics, women’s health, men’s health, general medicine, herbal medicine, sleep studies, and cosmetic medicine. House calls are also an option for established patients depending on location.

Dr. Urrea is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). She is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and serves as an associate clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

For more information or to sign up for Trinity HealthSpan ™, call Trinity Family Medicine at 512-258-1645 or visit www.urreamd.com.

Report Says Young Women Becoming More Sexually Active

According to new figures released by the sexual health team at Lloydspharmacy*, today’s women have three times more sexual partners by the time they reach 24 than women of their grandmothers’ generation had by the same age.

The sexual health team’s results show that young women today have an average of 5.65 different sexual partners by the time they are 24. By contrast women of their grandmothers’ generation had an average of 1.67 and women of their mothers’ generation had 3.72 sexual partners by the same age.

Looking back over the decades since the War and the end of rations, the research shows that young women in the supposedly ‘Swinging Sixties’ had the least number of different sexual partners whilst young women in the ‘Noughties’ had the most.

Cancer Research UK statistics show that incidence rates of cervical cancer in women under the age of 25 have not decreased despite better screening**. Lloydspharmacy believes the increase in the number of sexual partners could be one reason why.

The last ten years have seen significant decreases in cervical cancer cases in women in older age groups but worryingly, diagnoses of the infection in women under the age of 25 have not followed the same trend**.

The community pharmacy chain is urging women of all age groups to get themselves protected against the human papilloma virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection and one of the major causes of cervical cancer***.

“HPV infections are very common, especially in younger people”, said Clare Kerr, Lloydspharmacy’s head of sexual health. “If you are sexually active the cervical cancer vaccinations is one of the most effective ways to prevent infection with high risk forms of HPV.”

Women can receive cervical cancer vaccinations at 240 Lloydspharmacy branches throughout the UK. Other sexual health services available at Lloydpsharmacy branches or through the Online Doctor services on the website include genital Chlamydia and genital gonorrhea treatment.

Key research* insights for women between the ages of 18 and 24:
2000-2009 – women averaged over five different sexual partners, with 8% claiming to have had more than ten different partners
1990-1999 – women averaged under five different sexual partners
1980-1989 – 24% of women had three to five different sexual partners by the time they reached 24
1970-1979 – 24% of women had two to four different sexual partners by the age of 24
1960-1969 – almost 50 per cent had only one sexual partner by the age of 24

GoodToBeAlive.Com Launches National Retail Outlet For Defibrillators Exclusively For Home Users

Good To Be Alive launches its primary retail channel, www.GoodToBeAlive.com and toll-free number 1-888-OWN-1-AED (1-888-696-1233), which is a one-of-a-kind retail outlet – the nation’s first exclusive-for-home seller of defibrillators (automated external defibrillators or AEDs) suitable for personal use. Good To Be Alive offers Personal-AEDs or automated external defibrillators, (sometimes referred to as a Portable AED) which are self-contained laptop-sized devices that are used to revive a person suffering from sudden cardiac arrest by delivering a controlled electrical shock that can reset the heart to normal function. For witnessed sudden cardiac arrest, if used immediately, AEDs are up to 90% successful at resuscitation (whereas without an AED readily available, survival rates are 1% – 5%). Until recently, these devices were only safe when used by a trained professional. Now, due to recent technological advances, Personal-AEDs are safe and easy for layperson use. No other consumer device has empowered individuals for such dramatic results – resuscitation of a sudden cardiac arrest victim – basically bringing someone back to life!

SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST BACKGROUND:

Knowing the facts reveals the need for personal AEDs in homes: Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the United States. More than 300,000 US deaths annually, across all demographics, are attributed to sudden cardiac arrest (more than breast cancer, prostate cancer, house fires, hand guns, traffic accidents, and AIDS combined). Tens of thousands of sudden cardiac arrest deaths could be prevented if an AED were used immediately. AED utilization is the only treatment for sudden cardiac arrest – survival odds decrease 10% every minute without an AED. Few attempts at resuscitation are successful after 10 minutes without an AED. It is crucial to recognize that the majority of sudden cardiac arrest victims are asymptomatic, meaning these victims were not at heightened risk for a heart attack. We are all at risk, including the youngest among us. Sudden cardiac arrest is not limited to the aging population. Approximately 22% of sudden deaths for people between 1 and 21 years of age are due to cardiac arrest. A final relevant statistic– 80% of cardiac arrest occurs at home.

PURPOSE, NON-PROFIT PARTNERSHIP:

Good To Be Alive partners with national non-profit Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation (www.sca-aware.org). Initially, the two organizations are presenting survivor stories to the public, offering a referral purchase program (that will result in donations from Good To Be Alive to the SCA Foundation), and looking ahead to developing a public awareness campaign called “Save A Life at Home”, which will follow the successful and ongoing SCA Foundation campaign “Save A life at School.”

“Good To Be Alive is focused on providing defibrillators in the home where they are needed most. We are grateful that Good To Be Alive has chosen to begin supporting our Foundation from the onset, this is a demonstration of their commitment to their mission to save lives,” said Mary Newman, the President of the SCA Foundation.

Mark Adelman is the founding partner of Good To Be Alive. Mr. Adelman and senior partner, Allan Fine, are currently test marketing, as well as honing website and logistical operations. The senior management team expects Good To Be Alive to locally employ 12+ individuals by Fall 2010 in a combination of management and member support positions.

“I’ve always focused on technology serving people – I see that society is far too slowly adopting this life-extending medical advancement. The latest generation of easy-to-use AEDs are a game changer against the nation’s number one cause of death – sudden cardiac arrest. We’re determined to put a Personal-AED in the hands of as many people as possible. Our purpose is to decrease loss of life from sudden cardiac arrest. The American Heart Association estimates that between 50,000 – 100,000 lives could be saved annually if AEDs were widely accessible. That said, in the end, the decision to protect yourself and the people you care about against sudden cardiac arrest is a personal choice, it’s the individual’s right to choose to be prepared,” founding partner Mr. Adelman said.

Senior partner Mr. Fine said, “We applaud the proliferation of public access AEDs. The AEDs we all see in airports, fitness centers, and schools are important for people to have available, however the public should understand that 80% of sudden cardiac arrest occurs in the home. We are placing Personal-AEDs in people’s homes, where they are needed most. Good To Be Alive’s mission to save lives is very personal for me due to the fact that last year I lost my 28 year old brother to sudden cardiac arrest in his home. When Personal-AEDs are widely accessible, similar tragic losses can be avoided for other families.”

Good To Be Alive has established the Good To Be Alive Foundation. The Foundation’s purpose is to give back to the community by supporting the proliferation of AEDs, both Personal-AEDs and public-access AEDs (located at schools, airports, etc.) In fact, the Good To Be Alive Foundation has already donated AED equipment to a local high school and an AED to a county-based EMS group. Additionally, the Good To Be Alive Foundation is partnering with the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation (www.sca-aware.org) to support its efforts for a developing “Save A Life at Home” awareness campaign.

GOOD TO BE ALIVE TEAM BACKGROUND:

Founding partner, attorney Mark Adelman is a graduate of the Georgia State College of Law and the University of Georgia, Grady College of Journalism, as well as an experienced healthcare administrator. Prior to becoming a member of the Georgia Bar Association (2000), Mr. Adelman contributed to the development of the CNN brand as a producer in the network’s Marketing and Creative Services division. More recently, he won national video production awards for Georgia Tech as part of their marketing efforts. Mr. Adelman is an American Red Cross certified AED Instructor.

Acclaimed Miami Cosmetic Dentistry Practice Welcomes Dr. George Kolos to Team

Internationally recognized cosmetic dental practice Smile South Florida has recently added a top Miami cosmetic dentist to its lauded staff. Bringing 20 years of cosmetic and restorative dental experience to his new home at Smile South Florida, Dr. George Kolos, DMD, looks forward to providing his patients with beautiful and healthy smiles for years to come.

Acclaimed Miami Cosmetic Dentistry Practice Welcomes Dr. George Kolos to Team

Dr. Kolos is currently practicing from Smile South Florida’s Miami Cosmetic Dentistry, Fort Lauderdale, and Boca Raton offices. The Miami dentist was invited to join Smile South Florida due to his body of work as a Ft. Lauderdale cosmetic dentist, his status in the dental community, and his personal relationship with Smile South Florida’s leading dentist, Dr. Charles Nottingham.

“The opportunity to practice alongside my colleagues at Smile South Florida was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” says Dr. Kolos. “The team has made an impression across the globe as leaders in cosmetic dentistry. Working in this atmosphere of advanced technologies with a world-class staff that practices patient-friendly treatment makes it easy to come to work ready to make a difference in my patients’ lives.”

When possible, the cosmetic dentist prefers to treat patients with less invasive, less painful methods such as Waterlase dental laser treatment. Waterlase treatment is an advanced dental restorative tool that replaces traditional dental drills.

Whereas drills necessitate the use of anesthesia and create painful, traumatic experiences, Waterlase can remove tooth decay and perform periodontal (gum) treatment with less discomfort to the patient. In fact, Waterlase treatments have little need for anesthetics due to its less-invasive nature comments Dr. Kolos.

“I may be at a different office, but I will always be treating my patients delicately and with the utmost respect,” says Dr. Kolos. “I hope to see many of my patients from my private practice at Smile South Florida and I am looking forward to making new connections with new patients as well.”

Prior to joining Smile South Florida, Dr. Kolos practiced from his private Fort Lauderdale dental practice for 20 years. Dr. Kolos is an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern College, the Broward County’s Dental Association’s (BCDA) President, and is a Waterlase dental laser instructor. The Ft. Lauderdale dentist also gives back to the community through the Give Kids A Smile program, volunteer work at food banks, and planting mangroves at Kids Ecology Core.

Lloydspharmacy Unveil New Health Web Tool

Lloydspharmacy has launched a new web tool which allows people to work out how many of their work colleagues is carrying a sexually transmitted disease, drinks too much alcohol or is depressed.

The ‘Chances Are…’ Health Calculator, developed by community pharmacy chain Lloydspharmacy, is designed to stimulate debate and make health risks more relevant by applying nationally representative data to the workplace.

“People have become rather de-sensitised to national statistics,” said Andy Murdock, Governance and Pharmacy Relations Director of Lloydspharmacy. “When you hear that 15 per cent of the population is in danger of developing diabetes, it’s a bit meaningless, but when you discover, for example, in an office of 50 people, eight will be pre-diabetic and 10 of the men will experience some form of erectile dysfunction after turning 40, you’re more likely to sit up and take notice.

“That’s why we have launched this online tool. We hope it will be used in workplaces up and down the country, get people talking and encourage them to think about their own risk factors and what they can do to reduce their chances of developing lifestyle related diseases.”

The calculator asks visitors to provide information about the type of workplace they are employed in, along with the gender split and age profile of their workmates. It then raids its database to calculate how many colleagues have Chlamydia, how many men are likely to develop erectile dysfunction, how many are likely to suffer a stroke, how many have raised cholesterol, how many are hazardous drinkers and much more.

In many cases information is provided about the condition or the issue and guidance is provided about what can be done to reduce risk factors.

Team EyeCare 20/20 Members Predicted to Win Multiple Medals in Vancouver

Team LASIK-FOR-THE-GOLD, is a collection of champion Olympic athletes from across the country who have all had LASIK vision correction surgery by Cary M. Silverman, M.D., Medical Director of EyeCare 20/20.

With exactly one month to go to the start of the Winter Olympic Games, American athletes are scattered around the globe, some are desperately looking to secure their spot on the team, others making the final preparations of a never ending quest to deliver their life’s best performance next month in Vancouver, when it matters most. With the clock ticking, the LASIK-For-The-Gold Winter Olympians appear poised to bring home their share of Olympic hardware. Here is an update on each of the world class athletes who are patients of Cary M. Silverman, M.D. and the team of eye care professionals at EyeCare 20/20:

Katherine Reutter (short track speedskating) – Reutter is now a 17-time world cup medalist who is locked-n-loaded for her Olympic debut. She will compete in four different events and is considered to be one of Team USA’s most likely Olympic medalists.

Chad Hedrick (speedskating) – Already a gold, silver and bronze medalist from the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Hedrick has recently returned to his championship form and earned medals in both of his last two world cup events, including a gold medal in Calgary, Canada in December. Hedrick will square off against fellow American Shani Davis in the 1500 meters at this year’s Games in what promises to be one of the must-see showdown events of the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Curt Tomasevicz (bobsled) – A pusher behind U.S. driver Steve Holcomb in Team U.S.A.’s number one sled the ‘Night Train’, Tomasevicz and his teammates are on the podium more often than they are off of it. They are considered the team to beat when the Olympic medals are on the line next month.

Eric Pac (bobsled) – Long since considered ‘likely to make the Olympic Team’, Pac has recently shown that simply getting to the Olympics isn’t good enough. A world cup bronze medal in Salt Lake City in November turned heads on the international bobsled circuit and marked Pac as someone to keep an eye on in Vancouver. She currently holds a 5th place ranking in the overall World Cup standings.

Molly Engstrom (hockey) – A bronze medalist at the 2006 Olympics, a World Champion, and a long time member of the U.S. National Team, Engstrom and her teammates are highly likely to do battle with the host Canadian team with gold medals on the line. In this heated international rivalry, silver doesn’t count.

Dan Joye (luge) – Joye, who is part of the doubles luge team of Niccum & Joye, will enter the Games, his second Olympics, as part of the number one ranked U.S. sled. A recent world cup fourth place finish marked the team’s best ever placing – one step up in Vancouver will put Joye on the podium. For more information about any of the Team EyeCare 20/20 athletes, visit: www.LASIKForTheGold.com

Lloydspharmacy Wishes Customers A Flu-Less Christmas

Lloydspharmacy has announced that it has cut the price of its winter flu vaccinations by more than half price to encourage more people to protect themselves against the virus.

Recent research carried out by Lloydspharmacy found that take up for the vaccine has fallen this year. This could be due to a misguided belief that the swine flu jab will protect against winter flu**. However, price may also be a factor as people cut back during the recession. At £5, the Lloydspharmacy winter flu vaccine is now the cheapest on the high street compared to Asda and Tesco which are both priced at £8.00.

Chris Frost, pharmacist and director at Lloydspharmacy, said: “Winter flu can be debilitating and in some cases lead to very serious health issues. By making the vaccines available in our pharmacies across the country we’ve already improved access. Now they’re even more affordable we hope to have removed another barrier to people protecting themselves. The last thing anyone wants is to have flu over Christmas.”

Seasonal flu is responsible for the deaths of about 8,000 people in the UK a year and tends to affect the more vulnerable or elderly people. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control forecast that the swine flu and seasonal flu strains could each claim 40,000 lives across Europe this winter.

People over the age of 65 qualify for a free NHS seasonal flu vaccination as do people with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Others are able to get themselves protected on the high street. Lloydspharmacy offers a seasonal flu vaccination service in 260 of its pharmacies.

Lloydspharmacy Warns Not To Rely On Swine Flu Jab To Protect Against Winter Flu

Lloydspharmacy has warned that the number of people protecting themselves against seasonal flu has fallen this year, possibly the result of a misguided belief that the swine flu jab will protect against winter flu.

As of 6th November there had only been a 54% uptake in people aged 65 and over, and only 27% uptake by people aged 55 – 65 to date, of the seasonal flu vaccine. Opinium Research conducted for Lloydspharmacy among 2007 UK adults 4 – 6th November 2009. This is a big reduction compared with the 73.5% uptake in 2008 by over the 65s and 73.9% in 2007 (The Fifty-sixth World Health Assembly).

According to research conducted by Lloydspharmacy almost 40% of people wrongly believe that the swine flu vaccine will also protect them against seasonal flu. Even more worryingly, more than half (52%) of the over 65s – one of the groups most vulnerable to winter flu – thought they would be protected against both strains if they had had the swine flu vaccination.

People over the age of 65 qualify for a free NHS seasonal flu vaccination as do people with conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, chronic liver disease, lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment) or removal of the spleen, or if they are a resident of a nursing or residential home. Anyone who is the main carer for an elderly or disabled person and whose wellbeing may be put at risk if the carer falls ill, is also eligible for a free vaccination from their GP.

Others who are not eligible for free NHS treatment can still have an online consultation with a doctor and be vaccinated at high street pharmacies for a fee of£5, with Lloydspharmacy offering a seasonal flu vaccination service in 260 of its pharmacies.

Seasonal flu is responsible for the deaths of about 8,000 people in the UK a year and tends to affect the more vulnerable or elderly people. Last week the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control forecast that the swine flu and seasonal flu strains could claim 40,000 lives each across Europe this winter.

The World Health Organisation has urged national governments to put in place plans to vaccinate at least 75 per cent of people most at risk of seasonal flu by 2010.

“Whilst there is still time for vulnerable people to get themselves protected before late November (when the Winter flu season reaches its peak) we would certainly expect to see a higher uptake by this time of year,” said Clare Kerr, head of clinical services at Lloydspharmacy.

Sinusitis Treatment Rather Than Sinus Surgery

General Home Pharmacy Inc. Sinus Dynamicsâ„¢ announced the company has successfully treated over 25,000 patients suffering from Nasal Allergies, Sinus Infections and Sinusitis. Sinus surgery was recommended for over 75% of these patients; however they chose SinusDynamicsâ„¢; a topical sinus treatment using nebulized antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medications to treat sinusitis rather than sinus surgery.

Sinus surgery or Sinusitis surgery is often times the last option to treat this chronic sinusitis condition. SinusDynamics™ has an alternative non-surgical sinusitis treatment option with proven efficacy and safety. For patients whose quality of life is regularly impacted by acute sinusitis or chronic sinusitis, this non-invasive nasal sinus treatment with Nasal nebulizer offers the convenience of treating their condition from the comfort of their own home or work place without any limitation or interference associated with any sinus surgery.

What does combined antibiotic and anti-inflammatory nebulized treatment mean for patients suffering with Nasal Allergies, Sinus Infections or Sinusitis? SinusDynamics’™ combined antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment is a non-surgical solution offering the most advanced technology in treating sinusitis. This treatment method targets the source of the infection directly, resulting in quicker and better outcomes for patients with little to NO side effects. The SinusDynamics™ treatment is quick and easy-to-use, providing patients with an alternative to surgery.

Findings in clinical studies have shown SinusDynamics’™ combined antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medications improved and treat the condition of sinusitis patients. The SinusDynamics™ deposition of smaller particle size is supported by experimental and clinical studies. Researchers found that Sinus Dynamics increased deposition of aerosolized antibiotics in the maxillary sinus resulted in longer infection-free periods for patients with acute and chronic sinusitis. This study used particles with a mean diameter of 3.2 µm.

Researchers retrospectively found 82.9% of patients treated with Sinus Dynamics™ nasal nebulized antibiotics with mean particle diameter of 3.2 µm had a “good” or “excellent” response in treatment of Sinusitis. The medicated mist penetrates the tissues of sinus cavities and sinus infection topically to treat sinuses that are inflamed and infected. Physicians from across the country fax their prescriptions to Sinus Dynamics™ with combined antibiotic and anti-inflammatory nebulized topical treatment for their sinusitis patients.

Sinus Dynamicsâ„¢ provides patients with a high level of customer service. SinusDynamicsâ„¢ insurance billing and patient follow-up is unmatched. The company has a wealth of data and information gathered from their patient base and strives to ensure that each patient receives and achieves the optimal experience and results.

For most sinusitis sufferers (before or after sinus surgery), the infection can often times take over their lives – requiring numerous treatments throughout the years. Sinus Dynamics™ sinusitis and allergy treatment offers patients the option not to settle for simply managing the symptoms of a chronic disease with surgery.

Sinus Dynamics™ has raised awareness among influential groups, such as The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI), to include the nasal sinus nebulizer combined Antibiotic and Anti-Inflammatory treatment in their treatment regimens. There is also a growing trend that discusses the overuse of oral antibiotics and the issue of antibiotic “resistance” and how alternative antibiotic therapies with nasal nebulizer need to be used and evaluated at the time of treatment. Physicians need to consider not just topical antibiotics but alternative delivery methods such as nasal nebulized therapy utilizing the SinusAero which is the only nasal nebulizer offered exclusively by SinusDynamics™.

Contact Sinus Dynamics™ at 877-447-4276 visit their web site at  www.sinusdynamics.com. Sinus Dynamics™ works with otolaryngologists, allergy & immunology, infectious disease specialists, and pulmonary specialists throughout the United States; providing custom compounded medications, exclusively formulated to treat sinus infections and inflammation through nebulized topical sinus treatment. Braces are back in fashion this year, with The Hospital Group seeing a dramatic increase in the number of people seeking dental treatment. Celebrities like Cheryl Cole, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz have opted to straighten up with invisible braces – but the trend is not just for the rich and famous.

Innovative Medical Apparel Company Launches Men’s Lab Coats At Medica 2009 Conference

Medelita®, maker of breakthrough medical apparel, today announced the launch of its men’s lab coats, which are on display at Medica 2009, a leading international trade fair for the medical industry held in Dusseldorf, Germany. Medelita inaugurates its men’s collection with three varying lab coat styles, all named after distinguished figures in medicine: The Osler (44 in.), The Laennec (40 in.) and The Fleming (30 in.).

Men's Lab Coats

“Sophisticated, prestigious, innovative — these are words that medical professionals do not typically associate with lab coats,” said Lara Manchik, founder, Medelita.“But with the introduction of Medelita Men’s lab coats, male clinicians can now enjoy the same designer tailoring, high performance fabrics and upgrades that our female customers have raved about in our lab coats. The arrival of our men’s line is a natural evolution and we are thrilled to bring a product to market that’s long overdue.”

All Medelita lab coats are hand sewn in the U.S. using 100 percent pre-shrunk cotton, representing a significant improvement over traditional polyester/cotton blend lab coats with limited breathability. The lab coats feature a modern tailored fit, with finished inside seams and advanced fabric technology for unparalleled soil, stain, fluid and wrinkle resistance. While each style of Medelita Men’s lab coat is designed for a specific use, they are all available in contemporary menswear sizes 36-52.

The 44-inch Osler men’s lab coat is the modern version of the classic, full-length lab coat. Featuring five total pockets, including a concealed pocket for a PDA or Smartphone, the Osler lab coat is named after Sir William Osler, MD, CM, a Canadian physician, pathologist, educator, bibliophile, historian, and author, who is described as the Father of Modern Medicine.

The 40-inch Laennec lab coat is Medelita’s mid-length lab coat featuring abundant upgrades to this versatile physician lab coat. With a tailored, distinguished look and technically innovative features, this new men’s lab coat was named for René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec, a French physician who invented the stethoscope in 1816, while working at the Hôpital Necker and pioneered its use in diagnosing various chest conditions.

The 30-inch Fleming lab coat is a hip-length lab coat, often called a “consultation” or “student” length lab coat. The Fleming is named after Sir Alexander Fleming, a Scottish biologist and pharmacologist who published many articles on bacteriology, immunology and chemotherapy. He is best-known for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for the discovery of penicillin, which he shared with two colleagues.

New 28-Inch Student-Length Lab Coat Answers Customer Demand For Shorter Style And Is Available For Pre-Order

Medelita®, maker of breakthrough medical apparel, today introduced the new Elizabeth B. lab coat to its collection of high performance women’s lab coats. Shorter than traditional coats, the Elizabeth B. is 28 inches in length and falls just below the hip on a woman of average height. The new, shorter-length lab coat is available for pre-order and will be available to purchase online November 6, 2009.

“The introduction of the Elizabeth B. lab coat is a significant milestone for us in that it answers countless customer requests, expressing the need for a lab coat with modern styling, sensible performance fabric features and long-lasting durability,” said Lara Manchik, founder, Medelita. “We chose to name the coat in honor of Elizabeth Blackwell, the very first female medical school graduate who paved the way for women in field of medicine. This appellation also honors customers of Medelita who continue to make significant contributions in their respective medical professions.”

At the turn of the 19th century, female doctors did not exist. But Elizabeth Blackwell changed that with her inspiring life’s work. Education played an important role for Blackwell, whose father moved the family from England to the U.S. Motivated by the desire to fill the unmet needs of women who preferred to consult with a female physician, Blackwell eventually sought a formal education during a time when medical schools simply did not allow women. Her application to the Geneva Medical College in New York was inadvertently accepted because students and the administration thought it was a practical joke.

Eventually, Blackwell’s persistence won her respect, admiration and the first U.S. medical degree awarded to a woman in 1849; however, she was barred from practicing in hospitals and set up a practice out of her own home. Among Blackwell’s many achievements was the establishment of women’s medical schools in the U.S. and in England. The educational institutions were the culmination of plans co-developed with Florence Nightengale, whom she met during the Civil War. Well into her later years, Blackwell continued to inspire and encourage women to study medicine. Today, women represent more than half of the students pursuing some form of medical education.

The Medelita Elizabeth B. lab coat is designed for those medical professionals who prefer technical advancements – not only in their clothing but also in their lifestyle. The fluid resistant lab coat is treated with Advanced Dual Action Teflon® fabric protector, which allows the fabric to repel and release stains, including blood, while maintaining a clean and crisp, polished appearance. Tailored for a feminine yet professional shape, the coats are sewn in the U.S. and feature the highest quality workmanship available in a medical uniform. Modern styling includes rounded lapels with complimentary pocket detailing, clean finishing of all seams, and a hidden inside pocket for transporting handheld devices and other useful medical tools.

Also called a consultation lab coat, the 28 inch lab coat is worn by students across numerous medical professions — medical school, dental school, physician assistant school — as well as by those medical professionals who simply prefer a hip length lab coat. Although the length is often a designation of a student, in some settings, the shorter coat is preferred or even required.

The new lab coat joins the Medelita collection of women’s lab coats, which range from the original, full-length Callia lab coat (38 in.), the Ellody (34 in.), to the Estie (38 in.) and Sophia (34 in.), all of which can be custom embroidered with name, title, and profession as preferred. For more information on the Elizabeth B. lab coat and all Medelita products, please visit www.medelita.com.
