Nightingales’ UK Ltd Staff Awarded Dementia Awareness Certificate

Senior team members at leading UK home care specialist Nightingales have undergone an intensive training course aimed at equipping them with the skills necessary to understand dementia and care techniques associated with the condition.

Alison Emery Managing Director at the Warrington-based care firm and Neil Fitzpatrick, the business’ development and operations manager, both completed the Level Two Award in Awareness of Dementia last month.

Along with developing a greater understanding of dementia, including the different types and causes, the training course covered topics such as the role carers can play, understanding the various needs of dementia sufferers, referrals to specialists and how to improve communication with sufferers.

Mr Fitzpatrick said the knowledge and best practice techniques learnt through the Continuing Professional Development course will be passed on to other staff members at Nightingales to allow as many people as possible to benefit from the training.

He said: “The main reason Alison and I decided to undergo this training was to ensure we continue to develop the business in order to meet the needs of the increasing number of dementia sufferers in the UK.

“Dementia is a common condition. There are currently around 570,000 sufferers in Britain and it is estimated that number could double over the next 30 years. Everyone at Nightingales UK ltd is committed to providing the best possible standard of care and so as a business we see it as essential that all members of our staff have the right training to allow them to meet that aspiration.”

Dare To Bare – Confidence Is The Number One Reason Irish Women Cite For Having Cosmetic Surgery

The Harley Medical Group can confirm that confidence is the number one reason people cite as the reason for having a surgical procedure. People want to wear and bare but confidence is the key internal emotion that manifests in our behaviour.

Speaking about this Liz Dale, director of The Harley Medical Group said: “We see a large number of clients every day when asked why the client wants to have a procedure done the number one reason cited is confidence.

“When we are not confident/happy about certain elements of our physical features (and women win hands down in this area), we tend to ‘cover up’ with make-up, clothing or we become hermits. When we are happy we let the whole world see!

“However there are lots of myths around cosmetic surgery. 95% of people only have one procedure that they have been thinking about for several years.”

The following are 8 common myths about cosmetic surgery:

8.
MYTH: Having cosmetic surgery is like redecorating your house, once you’ve done one room, you move onto the next i.e. once you’ve had a nose job for example, you’ll have breast enlargement surgery next.

FACT: 95% of patients will only have one procedure that they’ve been thinking about for several years. It’s a confidence thing with many people.

7.
MYTH: Women who have boob jobs want to look like Jordan.

FACT: Most women only go up by one or two cup sizes and the average size is a C cup. Women also now want a more natural look and so opt for a tear-drop shaped breast implant rather than the traditional round high contour.

6.
MYTH: Cosmetic surgery is now so commonplace; most people view it as a beauty treatment and book it in for the next week.

FACT: Research shows that on average patients think about their surgery for two to three years.

5.
MYTH: More men are now having cosmetic surgery than women!

FACT: There’s been a huge growth in men having surgery, but they still only make up 20% of patients, according to The Harley Medical Group.

4.
MYTH: If you’re standing in the supermarket queue, chances are someone in that queue has had cosmetic surgery of some sort.

FACT: Only about 5% of the population has had surgery.*

3.
MYTH: Most people go abroad for surgery because it’s cheaper.

FACT: Many people feel uncomfortable about travelling so far away from home when having a major operation and feel it’s more risky.

2.
MYTH: You’ll only meet sales people when you go to a big cosmetic surgery provider.

FACT: Reputable providers only use medically trained staff. Patients should always meet with a medically trained professional nurse counsellor to discuss their procedure and will always meet their surgeon before the operation.

1.
MYTH: The cosmetic surgery industry will be one of the first things to be hit by a credit crunch as it’s a vanity led industry and not essential.

FACT: Most patients think about and plan for their surgery for many years they’re then unlikely to want to put it off and instead consider it an investment.

The Harley Medical Group is currently reporting a 35% increase in demand for cosmetic surgery, defying the credit crunch.

Laser Treatment For The Removal Of Scarring, Caused By Tattoo Removal, Proves Almost As Popular As Botox

TA-TA-TATTOO: Laser treatment for the removal of scarring, caused by tattoo removal, proves almost as popular as Botox at the UK’s leading cosmetic surgery provider, The Harley Medical Group.

With a high number of celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Peter Andre, Megan Fox, Kelly Osbourne and Eva Longoria, recently having tattoos removed, bookings for the removal of tattoo scars have risen by 30% at The Harley Medical Group, making the treatment almost as popular at Botox.*

The removal of tattoo scars is treated using the FDA approved laser treatment, exclusive to The Harley Medical Group, which is proven to reduce the appearance of scarring by up to 75%. With such a significant increase in bookings for tattoo scar removal, the treatment has been dubbed the ‘Ta-Ta- Tattoo’ by staff across the Group’s 31 clinics in the UK and Ireland.

Lisa Littlehales, Lead Nurse Counsellor at The Harley Medical Group, says: “The most common reasons for the removal of tattoos, is a new phase in life such as a change in relationship, or a new job, as seen with tattoo removal on celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox and Eva Longoria. The removal process can often result in scarring, leaving the memory of the tattoo visible and so defeating the point of the removal for the patient.
With a recommended course of four, the treatment uses fractional laser technology to break down scar tissue and generate new healthy tissue. The result permanently reduces the appearance of the scar, by producing smoother, more even skin that is lighter in colour.”

*Year-on-year bookings

MOST POPULAR PARTS OF THE BODY FOR TATTOO SCAR REMOVAL
1. Wrists
2. Back
3. Ankles
4. Feet
5. Arms

Says Jenny Taylor, patient at The Harley Medical Group: “I had a tattoo when I was younger that I loved, but 20 years later it just wasn’t ‘me’ anymore and I was really keen to get it removed. After having the tattoo removed, I was left with a scar which meant that I still had a mark on my body that I didn’t want. After having laser treatment at The Harley Medical Group, I’m really pleased with the results – the scarring has almost completely disappeared and I can now move on with a new phase in my life, without my tattoo, or any memory of it.”

The fractional laser treatment for the removal of scars, is exclusive to The Harley Medical Group and can also be used to remove stretchmarks.

Scar Removal Treatment cost:
The Harley Medical Group recommends a course of four treatments for the best results
+ £250 for one treatment
+ £950 for a recommended course of four

Great Ormond Street Hospital Supports Stem Cell Awareness Day

Great Ormond Street Hospital and its research partner, The Institute of Child Health at University College London (UCL), are supporting Stem Cell Awareness Day, with UCL promoting the event with the launch of a new YouTube video featuring Mr Paolo de Coppi and his colleagues.

Mr. de Coppi is Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Surgery Unit at The Institute of Child Health at UCL and carries out stem cell research at Great Ormond Street Hospital. It is hoped the research will result in stem cells being used to repair damaged organs. Mr de Coppi has looked for naturally occurring stem cells in amniotic fluid as a novel solution to some of the serious birth defects he sees. Around 40 per cent of patients at Great Ormond Street Hospital have some form of birth defect.

Mr de Coppi said: “As a surgeon I often see the devastating effects of multiple reconstructive operations aimed at replacing damaged organs. I have therefore focused my research interests on stem cells and tissue engineering, trying to find new ways to treat complex birth defects. I have identified stem cells in the amniotic fluid and found they have the ability to become many different types of cell. Our research aims to find ways of using these cells to repair and replace damaged tissues, so that babies are given the chance of a healthy life from the day they are born.

“The idea is we can create tissues in a test tube using a baby’s own cells, and then implant these at birth. We’re looking at repairing organs like intestines or windpipes. Grown from a child’s own cells, there should be no rejection of tissue.”

The video sees Mr. de Coppi discussing the work he and his colleagues carry out and offering insight into the latest developments relating to his stem cell research and the possibility of deriving cells from amniotic fluid. The full video can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD_V1hqR6SI.

The Harley Medical Group Reveals The British Profession Most Likely To Have Cosmetic Treatments

British celebrities with various professions, including chef Gordon Ramsay, TV presenter Kay Burley and fashion designer Victoria Beckham, all openly admit to having cosmetic treatments.

Inspired to reveal the professionals most likely to have treatments, The Harley Medical Group has found that it is actually those in the military who are most likely to have cosmetic treatments.

The Group conducted a survey across its 31 clinics in the UK and Ireland which revealed the military made up over 8% of bookings in the last six months, with patients choosing non-surgical treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers and surgeries such as otoplasty and gynaecomastia.

Top Five Professions Most Likely to Have Cosmetic Surgery
1. Military
2. Teachers
3. Policeman
4. City Workers
5. Hairdressers & Beauticians

Says Lisa Littlehales, Lead Nurse Counsellor at The Harley Medical Group: “Often patients who are in very active professions such as the military, opt for treatments as they feel they begin to look older than they feel, as their faces age more obviously than their bodies. Patients in the military profession also comment that playful banter in the mess encourages them to look into surgical options.

“Active celebrities such as Maria Sharapova, Mike Tindall, Jermain Jenas and Shane Warne, have all had cosmetic treatments. This type of patient is a great candidate for surgery, as they take regular exercise, generally eat healthily, don’t drink to excess or smoke and are in excellent health.”

The Harley Medical Group Patient and Army Corporal Danielle Hagget, 23, comments on her reasons behind having otoplasty: “I always hated my ears but after joining the army I began to notice them more, as I always have to wear my hair up, drawing even more attention to my ears. Being in a male oriented environment, there is often playful banter within my unit, although this is always a bit of fun, it also gave me the push I needed to go ahead with surgery and I decided to take the opportunity to save for my procedure while I was in Afghanistan. My surgery has given me a massive confidence boost, which has really helped my career – it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for myself.”

Mums Look To Non-Surgical Treatments To Achieve School Gate Confidence

With celebrity school mums like Elle McPherson and Claudia Schiffer providing inspiration from their perfectly groomed school gate snaps, The Harley Medical Group has seen a rise in mums booking in for rejuvenating treatments to achieve that same enviable yummy mummy look, in time for the new school term.

The Group reports a huge 26% rise in the past two months, from female patients booking in for treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers, skin peels and medical microdermabrasions, citing competition at the school gates as their reason.

Says Lisa Littlehales, Specialist Nurse Counsellor at The Harley Medical Group: “Lots of mums come in for non-surgical treatments before their children start school again.

“Most of these women have minimal spare time and don’t have time to put on makeup every day, so non-surgical treatments which are quick and with minimal pain mean that with busy term times, they are a great option. Most last up to a minimum of three months, which means that mums will stay looking great and feeling confident at the school gates all term.”

Jenny Powell, 43, UK television presenter, mother and patient at The Harley Medical Group, comments on her reasons for looking to non-surgical options: “I have a busy lifestyle and often find that the challenges and strain of juggling work and family take its toll on my appearance, as I don’t always have the time to pay too much attention to the way I look.

“Once the school term starts again I feel especially conscious about my appearance in front of the other mums at the school gate – especially as so many celebs in the media are seen looking amazing when they drop off their kids. In order to make sure I look and feel my best before the new term I tend to have a medical microdermabrasion treatment. The treatment always rejuvenates my skin and makes it look amazing even if I don’t have time for my makeup, which is perfect for those very busy days.”

Top five school gate treatments
1. Botox
2. Dermal fillers
3. Skin peels
4. Microdermabrasion

Lasering Off Your Unwanted Hair

Almost all of us have unwanted hair and most of would probably like to get rid of that hair permanently. So it is not surprising that many of us look into laser hair removal in Atlanta.

There are a few things that you should know about laser hair removal before you undergo the process. A little knowledge can often make things easier and more fun. Here is a little of what you should know about laser hair removal:

  • Laser hair removal is very safe, most people will suffer no side effects or harm if the procedure is done by a cosmetic surgeon and they follow their doctors’ instructions.
  • You will have to stay out of the sun for a few days after laser hair removal because your skin will be more sensitive and susceptible to sunburn.
  • Laser hair removal is more effective for people with light skin and dark hair. It may not work as well for blondes and persons with darker skin.
  • Laser hair removal is not permanent the hair will probably grow back but will be lighter in color.
  • The process is an outpatient procedure but it has to be done in a doctor’s office.
  • You will be able to resume your normal routine after the process as long as you cover the areas of skin that were treated.
  • There can be some pain involved because the doctor will be using a laser to burn hair follicles.
  • Board certified cosmetic surgeons can offer a wide variety of procedures for the removal of unwanted hair including laser hair removal.
  • It is best to discuss the procedure with the doctor before undergoing it.
  • Laser hair removal is considered cosmetic surgery so chances are that it will not be covered by your health insurance. This means you will have to pay for the whole procedure yourself.
  • Laser hair removal is very affordable so almost anybody should be able to afford it.

COSMETIC STAR SIGNS: Are You More Likely To Have Cosmetic Treatments As A Result Of Your Star Sign?

Leading UK Psychic Rosa Derriviere has looked into the reasons behind why some men and women are more open to the idea of cosmetic treatments than others, to see whether star signs play a part. Rosa has been practising for over 20 years and has appeared on SKY TV.

Rosa Derriviere says: “In my view, Librans and Taureans are most likely to have cosmetic treatments, as these signs are ruled by Venus, the Goddess of love and beauty. Astrologically, Venus is associated with harmony, beauty and balance, so these signs would have a natural disposition to wanting to look and feel beautiful.

“I have also taken a look into the areas of the body star signs govern, resulting in a focus on that particular body part. For example Cancer governs the breast, so therefore Cancer will be most interested in breast surgery. Similarly, Aries governs the face and nose, so Aries are more likely to be interested in facial treatments.

“I wanted to share my findings with The Harley Medical Group to see if there was correlation between my predictions and patient bookings, as well as celebrity-led cosmetic trends.”

Mr Frati, Surgeon at The Harley Medical Group, comments on Rosa’s predictions: “We’ve had a look at bookings of Surgical and Non Surgical treatments over the last three months at The Harley Medical Group and interestingly have found that 43% were from people born in April, May, September and October – so the months covering Librans and Taureans. The most popular treatments booked over the past three months are Breast Augmentation, Botox and Dermal Fillers, with 18% of Breast Augmentations booked by Cancereans.

There are many celebrity Librans that have had cosmetic treatments, including Simon Cowell, Michael Douglas, Kim Kardashian, Catherine Zeta Jones, Danni Minogue and Sharon Osbourne. There are also Taurean celebrities that have had treatments, including Janet Jackson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Cher.

This suggests people’s careers might also have an influence on their decision to have treatment. Those who work in the public eye are regularly photographed, so might want to look and feel their best at all times. Celebrities also tend to work quite erratic hours, which can disturb sleeping and eating patterns, and play havoc with your skin. Skin peels, Botox and dermal fillers all help towards rejuvenating the skin and giving it a more youthful appearance.

“Although it’s interesting to look into how people might be pre-disposed to considering cosmetic treatments, it is important to remember that the decision to have surgery is not frivolously made. Most of our patients consider the option for two years before making a decision. There are many factors, such as confidence issues, hereditary elements and injuries that can influence a patient’s decision to have surgery.”

What You Should Know About Botox

Botox is a brand name for a muscle relaxant made from botulism toxin. When it is injected into the skin it can relax the muscles and help get rid of wrinkles and other effects of aging.

When it is administered by a medical professional Botox is safe and effective. It is not a permanent solution but it can temporarily improve your appearance. You will have to come back for future treatments to keep the results.

You must always get botox injections from a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon because it is a powerful medicine. You should have yourself examined by a doctor before gettingbotox in Atlanta because there can be side effects. These can usually avoided by consulting a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon before the procedure.

Contrary to popular belief botox is not a poison but it can be dangerous in the long hands. You should never inject yourself with it, or use any product that claims to contain it. Instead you should seek botox in Atlanta from a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist.

Something else to know is that improperly administered botox injections may not be effective. You could end up submitting yourself to a painful procedure and spend good money and not receive the proper results. Therefore you need to find a board certified cosmetic surgeon to administer the injections.

Make sure the botox is being administered by trained medical professionals who are under the supervision of a board certified cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist. Also make sure that the doctor in charge examines you before you get the injections.

It is also a good idea to ask the physician what alternatives are available. Cosmetic surgery is advancing rapidly and new more effective procedures are being developed all the time. There might be permanent solutions available that you are unaware of.

The 3000 British women between 18 and 30 years-old who took part in the research were asked at what age they first considered cosmetic surgery, to which 25% of women answered between the ages of 10-15 years-old. 33% also answered that they had considered cosmetic surgery between the ages of 15-18 years-old.

Liberate Cosmetic Surgery views this as quite an interesting yet shocking statistic, as it shows a large number of people may be considering plastic surgery from a very young age.

Mr Paul Banwell, consultant plastic surgeon at Liberate commented: “There is no doubt that more and more younger people are considering cosmetic surgery and breast augmentation still remains the number 1 procedure. However, the statistics regarding the age at which women are first considering surgery is quite shocking.”

The research was conducted by One Poll in February 2011; surveying 3000 British women aged 18 – 30 regarding their feelings about their appearance and their attitudes towards cosmetic surgery. It wanted to explore issues young women face surrounding cosmetic surgery, look at current trends and find out what young women know and don’t know about surgery.

The Co-operative Magazine Outlines Health Services for Ramadan

The Co-operative Magazine has this week published information on the healthcare services that are available at The Co-operative Pharmacy stores during the Muslim festival of Ramadan.

The Magazine gives its readers the chance to take advantage of the knowledge, expertise and experience of pharmacists at The Co-operative Pharmacy during this important religious festival. Readers are given more information on how to participate safely in Ramadan, Hajj and Umrah, and given details of the dedicated healthcare service for Muslims across the UK.

The article states that specially trained pharmacists will be working at 84 branches of The Co-operative Pharmacy, available to give specific advice and support on all aspects of observing the practices of Ramadan, Hajj and Umrah safely.

Specialist help will include guidance on how to manage regular, orally-administered medication during the period of fasting, as well as advice on how to stop smoking and what vaccinations are necessary for those preparing for Hajj. The Co-operative understands that Ramadan is a good time to beat addiction as those observing the practices of the festival are required to abstain completely from food and resist all temptations during daylight hours.

Business development director at The Co-operative, Mandeep Mudhar, said: “We appreciate the importance of cultural understanding and sensitivity when discussing the implications of healthcare on people’s religious beliefs. But our trained pharmacists are here to help with this and with the preparations leading up to Hajj or Umrah.”

Once Ramadan is over, The Co-operative Pharmacy will focus on giving the meningococcal vaccine, as well as specialist health advice for those making the pilgrimage to Mecca. The Co-operative Pharmacy will be working with Novartis Vaccines and The Muslim Council of Britain to offer meningococcal vaccination (ACWY) packages to Muslim pilgrims.

For more information, read The Co-operative Magazine or find your nearest branch of The Co-operative Pharmacy with the online store finder.
