Surgicare Statistics Reveal The Winner Of The North Vs South In UK Battle Of The Boobs

New boob job statistics released by SurgiCare, one of the UK’s leading cosmetic surgery providers, have revealed an overwhelming winner in the UK battle of the breasts. There has always been a rivalry between the North and the South, and it seems that when it comes to boob jobs and breast augmentations, this is no different.

The figures from SurgiCare on boob job enquiries and procedures have shown that the northwest is the breast capital of the UK, with Manchester coming out miles ahead of anywhere else in the race for getting the best breasts.

In the past year alone, Manchester women have had 87% more boob jobs with SurgiCare than London women, and a whopping 284% more Northern women have enquired about breast augmentation and boob jobs than their Southern counterparts.

Other Northwest towns such as Bolton, Warrington and Wigan, showed the next highest percentage of boob jobs after Manchester. Yorkshire and the Northeast were next, with many women in Leeds, Bradford and Newcastle looking to improve their image and build their confidence with a breast uplift, whereas Scotland and the Isle of Wight showed very few women undergoing breast augmentation.

The Midlands, including Birmingham and Wolverhampton, came next on the boob front, with Cheshire, England’s richest county and home to many of the UK’s WAGs and footballers, not far behind.

Apart from Bristol, women in London and the Southwest seem to be content with their breasts, as this area showed a significantly lower proportion of boob job enquiries and procedures than other areas of the country.

However despite the differences between North and South, SurgiCare has still seen an overall increase in the demand for boob jobs and breast augmentations over the past year, even despite the recent credit crunch. Even though northern women are the most likely to opt for a boob job to achieve the perfect results they crave, it seems that women all over the UK are still coveting beautiful breasts.

The Harley Medical Group Reports Rise In Tummy Tuck Ops For Weight Loss Patients

The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, has seen a dramatic five year rise in patients undergoing body corrective surgery to cope with the after effects of extreme post obesity weight loss. Dubbed “Post Obesity Surgery” (POS), various surgical procedures such as tummy tucks (abdominoplasty), male breast reduction (gynaecomastia) and breast uplift (mastopexy) are booming as patients book in for body corrective surgery to treat their post obesity bodies.

Data taken over the past five years from The Harley Medical Group, which has conducted more than 10,000 POS procedures over this period, shows that tummy tucksare up 31%, male breast reductions are up 24% and female breast uplifts are up 18%.

Mr Frati, a surgeon at The Harley Medical Group, cites the UK’s obesity epidemic as the cause for this boom. With 21% of men and 22% of women in the UK being classed as clinically obese, which is predicted to rise to a quarter of all adults in 2010*, The Harley Medical Group estimates the abdominoplasty procedure alone will overtake breast augmentation as the clinic’s most popular treatment over the next ten years.

A patient of The Harley Medical Group patient, John Wright from Lincolnshire, who had a tummy tuck operation plus gynaecomastia (male breast reduction) after he lost 22 stone commented: “After the immense effort and hard work of loosing so much weight it was utterly soul destroying to see vast folds of skin hanging from my body. My local GP wouldn’t refer me to have cosmetic surgery on the NHS and so I was forced to go private. I used almost £10,000 of my savings, but I think it was worth every penny.”

Lisa Littlehales, head nurse at The Harley Medical Group, explained: “It’s heartbreaking to see patients who have achieved so much to lose dramatic amounts of weight so embarrassed by their post weight loss bodies. Surgery is able to transform both their bodies which have been so vastly overstretched and in the process restore their confidence.”

She added: “Many patients describe how they wish they had addressed the problem before they became obese, but talk of the creeping nature of obesity – slowly moving from being simply over weight to clinically obese over a ten year period. Many feel let down by healthcare professionals and feel strongly that the government’s focus on educating the public on healthy eating and exercise routines is long overdue and also needs far greater focus and outreach work.”

*Department of Health’s “Forecasting Obesity to 2010” report

About The Harley Medical Group:

Bookings For Surgery Amongst 45-65 Year Olds Booms, Second Marriages As Their Main Motivation

According to The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s biggest cosmetic surgery provider, bookings for surgery amongst 45-65 year olds doubled in 2008. When explaining why they’d opted for ‘silver surgery’, patients from The Harley Medical Group’s 23 UK clinics cited second marriages as their main motivation.

Liz Dale, Director of The Harley Medical Group, commented: “Many patients have thought about surgery for a long time and when they come out of a long-term relationship it can be part of their start afresh strategy. Cosmetic surgery helps give our patients renewed confidence as they embark on new relationships and second marriages. We also see many patients using Botox to help keep their appearance fresh when they have a younger partner.”

With second marriages now accounting for one in three marriages in the UK, a desire to look their best walking up the aisle the second-time round is encouraging patients to book in for procedures to dilute the ravages of time. Popular pre-nuptial procedures with middle-aged women include Blepharoplasty, Brow Lift, Breast Uplift, Botox and Face Lift. Top ops for men include Rhinoplasty and Otoplasty, which are often chosen to alter a feature they’ve long been unhappy with.

Liz Dale continued: “It’s not only the demand for cosmetic surgery that’s changing, it’s also the perceptions associated with it. Twenty years ago the majority of our patients wouldn’t tell anyone about their surgery; it would be a complete secret. Now the majority are happy to share the details of surgery with their families and friends.”

The Harley Medical Group is the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, performing more procedures and with more clinics than any other cosmetic surgery provider. It has been established for over 25 years and is one of the most highly-regarded Cosmetic Surgery Groups operating in the UK. It has conducted over 400,000 procedures to date.

The Harley Medical Group is renowned for introducing and pioneering most new surgical and non surgical techniques to the UK and Irish markets, such as Aesthera PPx, Laser Hair Removal, Cool Touch Laser, Silk Touch Laser, Collagen for lines and wrinkles, Laser for snoring, Tumescent Liposuction, LPG cellulite treatment etc. All new treatments and techniques are first thoroughly researched and tested before they are submitted for approval by the Group’s Medical Advisory Committee, as being suitable for application by the Group’s fully trained and specialized Plastic Surgeons, Doctors and Treatment Nurses.

A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery

Nearly 5 million children underwent surgery in the United States in 2008 and according to one prominent anesthesiologist, many of those surgeries were made more difficult by parents who refused to follow their doctor’s orders. Dr. Armen Ketchedjian, author of the book Will It Hurt? A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery, says that parents often ignore doctors’ directions and requests for pre-surgery testing and preparation.

Considering the stakes, the reasons parents give for not complying with their doctor often seem, well, unreasonable: Scheduled tests may interfere with family vacation plans or because parents, in their own opinion, feel that the requested tests or diets aren’t important.

“I’ve seen parents who felt that the rules didn’t apply to them,” says Dr. Ketch, as he is known to his patients. “They assume that doctor’s will understand if certain tests are not done or if certain consultations are missed.”

Missed appointments and tests cause unnecessary delays in the preparation for surgery according to Dr. Ketch, who says that medical professionals order the tests for a reason.

“We in the medical profession are held to a higher standard and so we can’t take anything for granted,” says Dr. Ketch. “We need the fullest cooperation of parents to provide the best care possible.”

Will it Hurt? is a guide for parents whose children need surgery and a big part of the book’s message is the importance of the preparations that contribute to a successful surgery. Dr. Ketch says he believes that informed parents make the experience easy for everyone, including their child. And that can pay big dividends after the surgery.

According to Dr. Ketch, “Children who are less anxious need less anesthesia during surgery and less recovery time after the surgery. Parents can ensure their children are more relaxed by being informed and by not putting any undue stress on the process.”

Will It Hurt? helps educate parents about pediatric surgery. It is an easy to-read resource will give you, your child and your family the help and reassurance you need to make the surgical experience as stress-free as possible.

Listed in The Guide to America’s Top Anesthesiologists by the Consumer Research Council of America, Dr. Ketch trained at Cornell Medical Center, with a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a pain management elective at Boston Children’s Hospital. He has also worked to help develop new techniques in ambulatory anesthesia, taught medical students and residents, and cared for more than 10,000 patients.

Study Says That Young Children Exposed To Anesthesia May Be More Prone To Developing Behavioral And Developmental Disorders Than Their Peers

A study released this week by Columbia University researchers found that young children exposed to anesthesia may be more prone to developing behavioral and developmental disorders than their peers, though researchers said the study was limited.

One prominent anesthesiologist says he believes that parents can help alleviate their fears about anesthesia by forming a solid relationship with their child’s surgeon.

Dr. Armen Ketchedjian, author of the book Will It Hurt? A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery, says that parents are often in the dark about what their child will experience while under general anesthesia and what risks may be associated with the drugs used during surgery.

“The risks to children undergoing surgery with general anesthesia are slightly higher than they are in adults” says Dr. Ketch, as he is known to his patients. “Children have smaller windpipes than adults and that makes the procedures a little more complex. It’s important for parents to talk to their child’s doctors to better understand what the procedure involves and what their child may experience.”

Research into the link between anesthesia and developmental disorders was first established using rats, and the anesthesiology community has been conducting further research since then on a recommendation from the FDA.

“We in the medical profession are held to a higher standard and so we can’t take anything for granted,” says Dr. Ketch.

Dr. Ketch’s book is a guide for parents whose children need surgery and a big part of the book’s message is the importance of education for parents. “Education,” says Dr. Ketch, “is a great way to help dispel myths and help parents make more informed decisions.”

Will It Hurt? is an easy-to-read resource that will give parents, their children and their families the help and reassurance they need to make any surgical experience as stress-free as possible.

Dr. Ketch’s Book Covers Important Topics For Parents Whose Children Need Surgery

A recent study of more than 11,000 children published in the journal Pediatrics found that door hinges and frames represent the greatest danger to small children in the form of hand and finger injuries.

The results of these injuries can lead to surgery, and one prominent anesthesiologist is paving the way in helping parents understand what that means for their kids.

Dr. Armen Ketchedjian, author of the book Will It Hurt? A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery, says that the injuries children sustain can often only be repaired through surgery, and that parents should prepare for that possibility.

Most of these injuries occur when doors close on a child’s fingers, a problem made worse in countries without legislation mandating safer door systems designed to help kids stay safe.

“When you hear that your child must have surgery it can be a terrifying experience” saysDr. Ketch, as he is known to his patients. “It’s not easy to accept that your child needs an operation, but once you know that he or she does, it’s imperative that you help prepare your child as best you can.”

Will It Hurt? is Dr. Ketch’s way of furthering parent education in the days and hours surrounding child surgeries that result not only from injuries such as those caused by door frames and hinges, but also from developmental problems, childhood diseases and birth defects.

“It has been shown that children have an easier time with surgery and recovery when they are less anxious, and a great way to help that happen is to have the parents be less anxious,” says Dr. Ketch.“That often means educating them so that their fears are alleviated at least a little bit.”

Dr. Ketch’s book covers important topics for parents whose children need surgery, including:

• What to do the day of the surgery
• What to do if their child needs to stay overnight
• How to choose a surgeon
• What questions to ask of the child’s doctors
• What to expect as the child recovers from surgery

Will It Hurt? helps educate parents about pediatric surgery. It is an easy-to-read resource that will give parents, their child and their families the help and reassurance they need to make any surgical experience as stress-free as possible.

The Do-It-Yourself Acupressure Face Lift Guide Explains What Is Facial Acupressure And How Facial Acupressure Works

The Chinese have used acupressure to enhance physical fitness and beauty for thousands of years. This 5,000 year old system has been found effective for toning muscles, improving the condition and “luster” of skin, relieving acne, sinus problems, jaw tension, and headaches.

It’s amazing to learn that many of the points that are used for these common complaints have Chinese names that reveal their other benefits, such as the Facial Beauty point and the Heavenly Appearance point.

As a finger pressure technique, facial acupressure can be used as a facial massage technique. Simple finger pressure relieves congested areas as well as relaxes the muscles. Thus toxins are released and eliminated, which of course benefits our outward appearance.

To explain this simple and healthy technique to women, Anne wrote a guide, the Do-it-yourself Acupressure Face Lift. The guide teaches quick and easy exercises and explains how to use facial acupressure to improve the skin complexion and maintain a youthful look.

Anne insists on the fact that facial acupressure is a finger pressure technique and revives the skin without any chemical. Facial acupressure helps preserve the face with a simple daily practice. These quick and easy finger pressure exercises act to firm up the facial muscles, reduce the fine lines, and finally improve the skin complexion. Moreover, facial acupressure brings other benefits: it helps getting rid of acne, skin problems, headaches and sinusitis.

Eastern tradition describes the world in terms of energy. Energy is the elementary substance and vital life force. It is also a synonym of “breath”. The Qi evokes breath, movement and vital energy. It encompasses two complimentary aspects: the Yin and the Yang. Without energy, there is no life.

The Qi goes way beyond simple muscular energy. It encompasses all the energies a body can pull: physical, mental, physiological and psychological. This flow is called Qi or Ch’i in Chinese, as in Tai Chi Chuan. It is called Ki in Japanese, as in Aikido, and Prana in India.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical technique for unblocking chi or qi. And the acupressure points are the famous acupuncture points, or acupoints (called “tsubos” in Japanese). They are the gateways to the Qi, and to the whole energy system. To work on the acupoints, acupuncture uses needles while acupressure uses gentle to firm finger pressure.

Many acupressure meridians run across the face, neck and skull. By massaging the points linked to the Qi, acupressure accesses the deeper levels and works on the general well-being, which in turn reflects on the face (everybody has noticed how a person in love looks radiant no matter what!). This vital energy is the most important element of the Facelift Acupressure; it governs our health, how we feel and how we look.

Anne Cossé is a Certified Acupressure Practitioner by the State of California. She is trained in traditional Shiatsu, Zen Shiatsu, Jin Shin Do, Reflexology, Touch for Health, and Reiki.

Addiction and Alcoholism with Chris Schroeder
Few people are better at explaining the mechanics of the 12 step spiritual recovery process. Treatment so often consists of clinical processes that have developed over the years and there is not adequate presentation of the spiritual process that has been shown to offer lasting recovery. One issue is that many counselors are not truly experienced with the process themselves so have an ineffective way of presenting it. Chris talks in a way everyone can understand, and hopefully be motivated to get their own experience with it and then have that experience available when it would be appropriate to deliver it to those who need it.

The Mark Houston Recovery Center is a Texas drug and alcohol recovery center located outside of Austin that offers a 90-day or more recovery programs for males designed around the traditional 12-step approach to recovery.

Boots Is Joining The Pampers And UNICEF Tetanus Vaccine Initiative For One Month During The Forthcoming Campaign

Boots has announced that it is joining the Pampers and UNICEF tetanus vaccine initiative for one month during the forthcoming campaign.

Each year maternal and newborn tetanus kills approximately 30,000 mothers and 140,000 babies around the world. This is equivalent to one baby dying from tetanus every three minutes. In 2007 Pampers created a campaign to support UNICEF by supplying funding for tetanus vaccines in developing countries through the sale of its nappies.

Boots has pledged to join this year’s campaign for 4 weeks of the three month campaign. During this time Boots will match the donation made by Pampers on the sale of Pampers nappies sold through Boots stores. This means that for every specially marked Pampers pack sold in Boots stores, the funding for two vaccines will be donated to UNICEF, rather than one.

Caroline Gardner, Boots Buyer for Baby said; “Maternal and newborn tetanus was eliminated in the developed world almost 50 years ago and it is shocking that this disease can turn the joy of having a baby into tragedy in more than 40 countries still today. The Pampers project with UNICEF can transform lives and Boots is delighted to be joining this initiative and hopefully help to make a real difference to families’ lives.”

Last year Pampers provided UNICEF with the funding for over 15 million tetanus vaccines. This year, with support from companies such as Boots, Pampers is hoping to provide the funding for 32 million vaccines to help UNICEF support countries in eliminating maternal and newborn tetanus by 2012*.

The Pampers and UNICEF campaign runs from October to December 2008 and Boots joins the campaign for four weeks from late October **.

Pampers Brand Manager, Usama AlQassab, commented, “The Pampers-UNICEF campaign is now in its third year in the UK, and year-on-year we have increased the target of the number of vaccines we want to raise. Matched contributions, such as the campaign Boots are committing to, are a critical factor for us to reach this year’s target of 32 million vaccines”.

UNICEF UK spokesperson Mayaz Rahman said: “It is unacceptable that maternal and newborn tetanus still claim approximately 170,000 lives every year, even though they are easily preventable diseases. Our partnership with Pampers is invaluable in helping us to support countries in eliminating maternal and newborn tetanus by 2012, and we are delighted that Boots will be adding its support to the initiative for four weeks.”

UNICEF UK – registered charity number 1072612 – is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

Surgicare Has Announced That The Gastric Balloon Will Be The Next Procedure To Be Added To Its Weight Loss Treatments

SurgiCare, leading UK cosmetic and weight loss surgery provider, has announced that the gastric balloon is the latest procedure to be added to its weight loss treatment portfolio.

SurgiCare has reported that the introduction of the air filled gastric balloon procedure directly responds to a gap in the current weight loss market and has proven to be less prone to side effects compared with the liquid alternative. The traditional liquid filled gastric balloons have been known to cause extreme nausea and discomfort due to the movement of the liquid content. The introduction of the gold coated, air filled balloon means that patients experience less nausea and discomfort, meaning a faster, safer recovery following the procedure. The gold coating is designed to prevent air loss and reduce the problem of deflation, which can occur in the fluid filled balloon option, ensuring the balloon stays at maximum volume for the full duration of placement, which can be up to six months. During this time, weight loss can be up to five stone.

SurgiCare is one of only two weight loss surgery providers to offer the procedure in the UK. Available exclusively to patients with a BMI of between 25-35, the gastric balloon offers patients who are struggling to find a weight loss solution an opportunity to control their weight. It is an industry concern that patients who do not meet the strict criteria for a gastric band or bypass may resort to more drastic measures such as over eating to reach the required BMI of 35 and above. The lowered BMI recommendation of a gastric balloon provides a weight loss option for those who would not previously be considered, providing a much needed alternative for those who have tried every other weight loss method.

The relatively simple procedure, takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. The balloon is inserted into the stomach under sedation or general anaesthesic and then filled with air. The filled balloon decreases the space available in the stomach making the patient feel ‘full’ quicker resulting in weight loss.

Mark Bury, chief executive at Surgicare commented: “The gastric balloon has been a staple weight loss procedure in the United States for many years. The introduction of the air filled balloon is a big step forward for weight loss procedures as it provides patients with the same results as a liquid filled balloon, but without the associated side effects.

He continued, “The addition of the procedure to SurgiCare’s weight loss portfolio will open the door to weight loss surgery for those who would not be considered for other procedures. The gastric balloon provides an excellent short term aid to weight loss and delivers fantastic results when combined with the diet and exercise program offered in our aftercare program.”

As part of the SurgiCare aftercare program it is recommended that patients carry out three hours of sporting activity each week and follow a coordinated diet plan to aid maximum weight loss.

About Surgicare:
With over 16 years experience and 8 clinics, SurgiCare is one of the largest and most respected cosmetic surgery networks in the UK. SurgiCare specialises in weight loss surgery with a unique 24 month aftercare programme and prides itself on providing an unrivalled aftercare service.

Diaton Tonometer Allows Glaucoma Screening To Be Done Simply, Quickly And Painlessly

Driving is a demanding activity. Drivers must see obstacles or hazards, straight ahead or in their peripheral visual field, consider the possible reactions of others, estimate the time and distance, decide upon their action and then react accordingly. Driving safety depends on many external factors as well as the condition of the driver.

Visual impairment is one of the factors in the decision to deny a person the right to drive. Losing one’s driving license is a major limitation in their lifestyle and day to day routine. Because vision is the most important factor during driving, many driving related injuries are a result of vision problems.

As per Survey of Ophthalmology, “visual acuity is related to crash involvement, whereas peripheral vision appears to play a more critical role.” One of such visual impairments may be caused by glaucoma. Glaucoma is characterized by abnormally high intraocular pressure (IOP), the pressure inside the eye. This can cause a loss of peripheral vision, which makes it more difficult to see a pedestrian or vehicle approaching from the side; in
essence creating a large blind spot.

Vision loss due to glaucoma is irreversible. However, increased intraocular (eye) pressure (IOP) is easy to screen for and detect in early stages, allowing the prevention of any further loss of sight. Routine screening can be performed by your general physician or eye care professional.

BiCOM Inc. with its unique new screening device, Diaton Tonometer, now allows this eye test to be done simply, quickly and painlessly. The Diaton Tonometermeasures intraocular pressure (IOP) Through the Eyelid, avoiding the commonly known discomfort of screening through the cornea. For the first time,Diaton Tonometry requires no contact with the cornea. Measurement is done through the upper eye lid, over the sclera, eliminating any risk of infection or discomfort.

“Too many people believe they can tell if they’re developing glaucoma,” says Dr. Gregory K. Harmon, Chairman of the Glaucoma Foundation. However, it is estimated that half of those suffering damage from glaucoma, do not know they have it. The disease has come to be called the “silent thief of sight” because it often strikes without any symptoms.

A peripheral impairment of the visual field is a reason for denying a driving license in most states in the USA. For many who do not experience any visual symptoms, it comes as a shock when they are denied renewal of their drivers license based on visual field defect or poor peripheral vision.

Patients with visual field defects, commonly due to glaucoma, have double the incidence of road accidents or traffic violations as compared to those with a full visual field according to a study by Johnson & Keltner. More importantly, almost half of those with visual field loss were unaware of any problem with peripheral vision.

You cannot influence the risk factors for glaucoma. However, you can take measures to detect the problem at an early stage and stop any further damage to your vision. Doing so will prevent it from affecting your driving safety and interfering with your routine lifestyle. Ask your doctor about routine glaucoma screening with the Diaton Tonometer, even if you think your vision is normal. Problems may be easier to correct if caught at an early stage.

About BiCOM Inc.
BiCOM, with its 15 years of tradition and global clientele, has proven to be the enterprise of the highest level of professionalism, integrity and financial solvency. Says Mr. Boris Kun, President of BiCOM Inc: “Diaton Tonometer is a revolutionary device and signifies a new stage in Optometry and Ophthalmology!”

BiCOM Inc., with a release of tonometer Diaton to US is committing to a mission of preventing blindness caused by glaucoma.

Lloydspharmacy Campaign Against The Threat Of Coronary Heart Disease Joined By Royle Family Star Ricky Tomlinson

Actor Ricky Tomlinson has warned British men against the threat of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) as part of a new campaign for Lloydspharmacy. Ricky freely admits that he did not take his heart health seriously in the past and paid the price in 2007 when he was diagnosed with heart disease after his wife insisted that he went to the doctor for a check-up.

A quadruple bypass and a significant amount of weight loss later, Ricky says he is a new man. He admits that if his wife hadn’t mentioned to his doctor that he had been a little breathless, he would probably be either very ill now, or worse.

Tomlinson’s campaign, ‘Ten Years Longer’, is designed to encourage men who are at risk of CHD to get their hearts checked out. “Men think illness is the same as weakness and it’s not very manly to be ill,” said Ricky. “The trouble with that is that if you ignore your health then you are more likely to get very ill indeed.”

He continued, “If women will go on a TV show to look ten years younger, then men can go to a pharmacy to live ten years longer.”

According to a new study by Lloydspharmacy, CHD will rob British men of more than 16.5 million years of life, although early detection of cardiovascular problems could lead to 4.3 million of those years being saved. That’s an average of 4 years per at-risk individual, but for some the number of additional years could be much greater.

Andy Murdock, Pharmacy Director for Lloydspharmacy said: “Most men can manage to keep the appointments that they think are important. They get their cars serviced, get to meetings on time and remember to file their tax returns. The one appointment they can’t seem to make is for a health check up.”

Lloydspharmacy offers cholesterol and heart checks at 625 of its pharmacies across the UK. The Lloydspharmacy cholesterol and heart check removes many of the excuses men typically give for not getting themselves checked out. No appointment is necessary so they can just walk into the chemist off the street at a time which is convenient.

Dr David Grainger, a heart disease researcher at Cambridge University and British Heart Foundation Senior Fellow, who compiled the Lloydspharmacy study, said, “When my father died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 55, he had no idea there was any problem with his heart. But this study emphasises that despite improvements over the last decade, heart disease still has a huge impact on the health of the UK population, and men in particular. The first step to avoiding a heart attack is being aware of the risks.”

About The Lloydspharmacy Heart Healthcheck
The 15 minute Lloydspharmacy Heart Healthcheck checks cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and body mass index as well as giving a full lifestyle assessment. Based on these results a percentage risk score of developing heart disease over the next ten years is estimated. Everyone who uses the free service will receive a personal action plan and summary of the test results. For high-risk customers a support pack is supplied and referral to the GP is recommended.

The Heart Healthcheck was trialled in 122 Lloydspharmacy outlets across the country last year and results show approximately 40% of those who had a check were referred to their GP.
