Half Of Australian Workers Have Considered A Career Change In The Past Five Years Says carecareers

carecareers is a NSW government-funded initiative launched to help job seekers connect with the thousands of opportunities in the care sector, and to provide career advice, including what transferrable skills are useful and what on-the-job-training is available.

Job opportunities in the disability and community care sector are booming; employers in this sector are looking to recruit up to 10,000 people in the next five years – because the number of people who require some form of paid-care is expected to rise to 380,000.

There is a need to recruit people across a wide range of positions including:physiotherapists, speech pathologists, frontline support workers, gardeners, drivers and cooks, as well as executive staff and accountants, marketing, human resources professionals.

Research commissioned by carecareers shows:

More than half of Australian workers (52%) have considered changing careers in the past five years. (57% women, 49% men)

Almost two-thirds of people aged 18-34 have considered a career change in the past five years.

More than half of Australian workers consider the disability and community care sector provides rewarding work. Of the industries surveyed, disability and community care also ranked highest for its respect for workers (35%).

Overview of career changers attracted to work in the sector:

The most common reason given by people looking for a change of career is that they are “looking for a more satisfying and fulfilling career”.

Career changers come from a wide variety of industry sectors with the three largest being retail/sales (23%), administration (12%) and hospitality (14%) industries.

The majority of career changers are women, with an average age of 34.

What has carecareers achieved in the past 12 months?

More than 10,000 job applications for positions have been made through the carecareers service in the past 12 months, an increase of 50% on the previous year.

More than 300 employers across NSW have registered to use carecareers to attract a range of workers in the sector since it launched (January 2010).

The carecareers advisory-service team have spoken personally with thousands of people considering a career in the sector.

What are the benefits of a ‘carecareer’?

There has never been a better time to explore a career in the disability and community care sector. Employment is booming, with 10,000 more people needed to fill a wide variety of roles over the next five years.

Work within the disability and community care sector offers employees flexible working hours, on-the-job training, and employment security, with the demand for staff increasing as the sector booms.

One area of significant job growth in the sector will involve allied health professionals, especially in rural and regional communities. Increasing specialisation of allied health professionals, combined with sector-wide increases in demand for services and a greater focus on recruitment and retention are fuelling demand for these professionals.

Recent research found more than half of respondents recognised the disability and community care sector as providing rewarding work, far ahead of major industry sectors including retail, mining and manufacturing. [Source: Essential Poll, April 2012]

Using Psychology to Lose Weight – Because Dieting and Exercise Alone Don’t Work

MariasLastDiet.com, the website for women who want to lose weight, issued a  white paper today about using psychology to lose weight. The author, Kenneth Schwarz PhD, a psychologist and psychoanalyst and co-founder of MariasLastDiet.com, wrote the paper because of the continuing high rate of weight-loss failure with the current standard formula, Diet + Exercise = Weight Loss.

Dr. Schwarz argues the case for using psychology to lose weight by amending the formula to read, Weight Loss = Dieting + Exercise + Using Psychology, where using psychology is really two factors, adherence and personal change.

Adherence, which research shows is the single-best determiner of weight loss, is sticking to it—the diet or weight-loss program. Adherence is not only sticking to your food plan, though, it is also sticking to what will help you make the necessary personal changes.

Losing weight, especially for women, is never just about the food. It is always about a woman’s psychology as well. Personal change has to do with altering old patterns of behavior and replacing these patterns with new behaviors that are more conducive to successful weight loss.

Dieting and weight loss as they are currently practiced require a lot of self-control and willpower. The use of so much willpower and self-control makes the weight-loss process terribly arduous and ripe for failure. To address this, Dr. Schwarz added another goal to the primary goal of losing unwanted weight, that of using the least possible amount of self-control and willpower to effect change.

Once the goal of making the weight-loss process much less dependent on willpower and self-control is set, what remains is to show how to implement this goal. Dr. Schwarz takes traditional weight-loss issues and, using the principles and practices of psychology, illustrates how to successfully resolve these issues more automatically, and without the need for such self-defeating effort.

New Study Suggests Alcohol Abuse Rewires Brain, Impedes Trauma Recovery

A recently published study suggests that heavy alcohol use may interfere with recovery from traumatic situations.

The study was published in the journal Nature Neuroscience and focused on mice that were chronically exposed to alcohol in doses twice the legal driving limit imposed on humans. Conversely, the control group of mice wasn’t exposed to any alcohol. After administering, and then ceasing, tiny electrical shocks mimicking trauma within humans, the mice chronically exposed to excessive alcohol had a more difficult time recovering from the trauma. In addition, a key receptor within the brains of the alcohol-exposed mice was suppressed and nerve cells within the brain were found to have taken on a different shape.

“This study offers valuable insight into how chronic alcohol abuse may disrupt recovery pathways in human brains,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab andAlcohol Treatment Center. “By understanding the correlation between chronic alcohol abuse and anxiety associated with traumatic events, researchers could eventually develop drugs that could assist in recovery for chronic alcohol abusers.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that excessive alcohol use is the third leading lifestyle-related cause of death within the United States, estimating nearly 80,000 deaths annually. If you fear that a loved one may be excessively consuming alcohol, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can assist them in getting their life back on track. Mountainside’s comprehensive alcohol rehab program has been recognized as a standout program among their peers.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center is a modern drug rehab and alcoholism treatment facility that is skilled in serving a variety of clients with various addictions and in varying stages of addiction. The caring, compassionate team is made up of licensed and certified social workers and counselors who have extensive experience and specialty in the addiction treatment field. In addition, the staff includes a Nurse Practitioner, as well as a Registered Nurse, both of whom also have specializations and experience within the field of addiction treatment and alcohol rehab.

Mountainside also has available services for those individuals who come to them with dual diagnoses and require the services of a Psychiatrist to help conquer the unique challenges that dual diagnosis brings.

For the past 13 years, Mountainside has established itself as an innovator within the addiction treatment field, and the treatment modalities Mountainside utilizes are regarded as among the most cutting-edge approaches in helping individuals to get, and to remain, sober. As a result of their unique, innovative approaches to addiction treatment, Mountainside has become the model for the addiction treatment field.

The program and its professional addiction treatment team have earned national recognition and resulted in Mountainside being invited to Washington by the White House to meet with the White House Drug Czar, John P. Walters, for an in-depth meeting on what makes its program so successful. These accolades did not go unnoticed within the addiction treatment field and resulted in the adoption by many throughout the country of a more holistic approach to drug addiction treatment.

BootsWebMD.com launches Baby Personality Quiz

BootsWebMD.com has launched a new, online Baby Personality Quiz which highlights several key traits to look out for when analysing a baby’s temperament.

With the help of the Baby Personality Quiz* on the BootsWebMD.com Children and Parenting Health Centre, users can identify their baby’s personality by answering a series of simple questions about their behaviour. The results of the quiz can then be analysed to identify their behaviour patterns. Essential information about the best approach in managing a child’s behaviour habits can also be found, with a simple step-by-step guide to keeping in sync with the baby. It could even help users to work in tandem with their child’s temperament and personality to make life easier for both parent and child.

Whether the child is feisty or easy-going, the answer to identifying its personality and behaviour patterns lies in a number of key areas. According to paediatrician Dr William Carey, author of ‘Understanding Your Child’s Temperament’, these include:

Activity/energy level – if the child has high or low energy levels, parents need to look for ways to keep them moving at a pace that’s comfortable for them Approach to newness – a naturally hesitant or shy baby will need extra reassurance and patience to overcome their shyness.

Intensity – if a baby is laid back, they can get lost in the shuffle of family life and vice versa. If the baby is intense they must be taught to deal with the curves of life

Sensitivity – if a baby has high sensitivity to lights, noise or texture, parents must be patient and look for ways to avoid sensory overload such as the lighting and the type of clothes the baby wears.

Regularity – if everything is unpredictable, potty, naps, moods, parents have to let go of their controlling ways and loosen up. Conversely, if a baby likes structure, parents might have to adhere to the schedule they crave

Persistence – puzzles are great tools to lengthen attention span, along with a daily dose of bedtime reading.

Overall mood – parents should take the time to observe their baby’s daily patterns and what makes them smile for a happier baby.

Drug-Related Deaths Outnumber Deaths By Automobile Accident

The Centers For Disease Control (CDC) has declared prescription drug overdoses as an epidemic in the United States.

The CDC estimates that one death from abuse of prescription drugs happens every 19 minutes- a greater number than those killed in automobile accidents. The National Institute of Health estimates that nearly ten percent of Americans abuse narcotics over their lifetime; 20% of teens are estimated to be experimenting with opioids.

“The number of individuals who experiment with narcotics is alarming,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “It seems as if many individuals believe that experimenting with narcotics is safe simply because they are prescribed by a physician and filled at a pharmacy. These statistics show that these beliefs couldn’t be further from the truth. Prescription drugs are prescribed by a physician, or other qualified medical professional, for a specific individual – others abusing them are endangering their lives. We need to make certain that we are sending the right message, all of the time, to Americans. We must be vigilant as we declare war on this epidemic.”

While opioid abuse is growing at a staggering rate, there is hope. If you believe that your child or other loved one is among those who are experimenting with opioids or any other substance, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can help provide professional intervention services that will help you to approach them in a non-confrontational manner.

Through their unique drug addiction treatment program, Mountainside’s team of professionals will customize a program that is unique to the specific treatment needs of the individual. In addition, their comprehensive family care program will educate the entire family as well and give them the tools to support the family member’s recovery process leading to the journey of life-long sobriety.

New Research Suggests Addiction to Opioids May be Preventable

A new study suggests that in the future it may be possible to eliminate possible addiction to opioids while increasing the pain relief that those medications provide.

A joint study conducted by researchers from the University of Adelaide in Australia and the University of Colorado focused on the body’s immune system response to opioids and, in particular, an immune receptor termed TLR4. This particular receptor allows the opioids to be bound to it and, by doing so, drives the physiological reward system. Researchers discovered that by creating a drug that blocks this receptor, opioids are prevented from driving the physiological reward system.

Another benefit was also discovered during this research phase. In addition to blocking the reward system pathways, researchers also discovered that the effectiveness of the opioids pain relief mechanisms also increased.

“This study deserves much consideration,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside DrugRehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “If it is develops that being able to increase the effectiveness of the pain relief properties of opioids while, at the same time, preventing the reward system from being activated, it will mean that those taking various pain medications will be on a safer journey.”

Statistics from the National Institute of Health estimates that nearly ten percent of Americans abuse opioids over the course of their lifetime, with one in five children experimenting with opioids prior to their seventeenth birthday. If you believe that your child is among that twenty percent and are in need of assistance in reaching your child, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can help provide professional intervention services that will help you to approach your child in a non-confrontational manner.

Through their unique drug addiction treatment program, Mountainside’s team of professionals will customize a program that is unique to the specific treatment needs of the individual. 1st September Marks The Start Of PCOS Awareness Month – And Hope For The 11% of Women Struggling With This Illness

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Afflicts More Than 1 in 10 Women, causing obesity, infertility, increased miscarriage rates, adult acne, increased risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and more. September marks a campaign to increase awareness of this common, misunderstood and potentially debilitating illness.

Women suffering from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome – a complex disorder of the endocrine system affecting 11% of women, according to a report from The Adelaide University – often find themselves desperately seeking relief from their myriad symptoms. Research shows that 9 in 10 women with PCOS consulted more than one health professional prior to their diagnosis, half took more than six months to receive a confirmed diagnosis and 4 in 10 were very dissatisfied with how they were informed about their illness.

According to the Robinson Institute “little information is given about lifestyle management or complications of PCOS even though 57% of women were confident their lifestyle management will improve their condition.” Lifestyle management is also what the latest research shows is ‘the best medicine’, and is the foundation of Dr. Rebecca Harwin’s new, comprehensive book ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’.

Conquer Your PCOS Naturally – A New Book Offers A New Approach Typical treatment protocols for PCOS include a whole host of medications. From birth control pills and insulin-sensitizing medications to ovulation induction, anti-androgen medicines and topical medications, many of these conventional treatment paths can prove both ineffective and even toxic to the body.

In a desperate search for a better way, Dr. Rebecca Harwin slowly and systematically developed a cutting edge, natural approach to PCOS relief – a method she’s now compiled into an exhaustive treatment plan online and in her new book, ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’.

“I won my battle against PCOS and I did it without the invasive treatments, toxic chemicals and ineffective interventions that pharmaceutical medicine has to offer. I lost approximately 20kg, and have kept it off. My period returned, and I remember exactly where I was the first time I ovulated. I no longer suffer from acne, mood swings, hot flushes, my energy levels are balanced, and my excessive hair has reduced.”

Dr. Harwin says “I knew many other women were suffering just as I had done and I also knew there was very limited accurate information available. I realized I had a responsibility to get this powerful information into the hands, minds and hearts of other women with PCOS. My book ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’ is dedicated to helping women regain their health, boost their fertility, restore their period, lose excessive weight, and live a PCOS free life,” she said.

“Life-Changing”, “A Must Read For Anyone With PCOS”, “A Definitive Guide For Treatment”

The ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’ approach is already enjoying a steady stream of accolades and affirmations from PCOS patients and medical professionals across the globe. According to Stacy Miller of Raleigh, North Carolina, this book has been“life changing” and after feeling “lost in a sea of information” following her diagnosis a year earlier, Miller found that reading the book armed her with the information she needed to reduce her disease risk and improve her fertility. “I feel now that I have the power to control my body, instead of continuing to let my body control me,” she said. Dana Adams, a PCOS sufferer and recent convert to the natural treatment path, agreed and pointed out that ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’ is the first thing she’s read on the subject that didn’t leave her feeling mystified. “One can certainly mine the internet for information, but be warned, you will be overwhelmed with an astounding amount of recommendations of supplements, medications, therapies and the like. While there are some books out there that address the issue of PCOS, Dr. Harwin [looks] at your health and wellness as a whole, giving excellent advice on nutrition, stress management, food toxicity, supplements, exercise, and the holy grail for those of us trying to conceive, fertility. [It’s] one of the best books I have read on the subject.”

Dr. Joel Fugleberg, himself a proponent of natural treatment alternatives for PCOS sufferers, called the book not only a must read for PCOS sufferers, but also for the “health care provider looking to broaden their own understanding of this condition.” And Dr. Michael Elstein of the Eternal Health Medical Center in Sydney, Australia, agreed by commenting, “I love this book’s clarity and precision. This is a book not only for the layperson suffering from this disorder but also for the professional who wants a definitive guide for treating it.” Elstein also added, “What I love about Dr. Rebecca Harwin’s book is that it is a simple easy to read journey through all the natural means of attacking what is arguably the number one metabolic and hormonal disaster that is compromising the lives of so many women.”

With September’s PCOS Awareness Month and Dr. Harwin’s tireless dedication to raising the awareness of this common, potentially debilitating, syndrome, there is hope of recovery – and a healthy life – for women afflicted with PCOS.

Alcohol abuse may be predictable in future

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of California found that future prediction of alcohol abuse might be possible.

MRI scans were performed on 40 adolescents who had never drank alcohol and found that the children who had been followed, initially, showed less activity in specific areas of the brain and were at potential risk for becoming heavy drinkers.

“While this study followed adolescents, it provided valuable insight into the brain’s mechanisms,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Certainly, this study doesn’t advocate brain scans for adolescents, but research into the way these specific areas of the brain function may be able to help those within the addiction field to look into means for advanced prevention for alcohol abuse in the future within a variety of ages of individuals.”

Prevention, beginning at a young age, is the key to decreasing alcohol abuse in America.

As a parent, you may find it difficult to approach your child about issues relating to alcohol or to their drinking. However, if you suspect that your young adult is struggling with underage drinking, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can help you gently and effectively approach them with their customized, professional intervention services.

Through their unique alcohol rehab treatment program, their team of professionals will customize a program that’s unique to the specific treatment needs of the individual. Their comprehensive family care program will educate the individual and his/her family and provide the necessary tools to support the recovery process.

Using Psychology to Lose Weight

Dr. Kenneth Schwarz, co-author of the series, Weight-Loss Books for Women — Using Psychology to Lose Weight, will appear on The Mary Jones Show on Monday, August 20, 2012. The show is from noon to 2 p.m., and can be heard on WDRC-AM 1360 Hartford, WSNG-AM 610 Torrington, WMMW-AM 1470 Meriden, and WWCO-AM 1240 Waterbury.

Dr. Schwarz will be interviewed by Mary Jones about the 7 self-help, how-to books that he wrote with his wife, the writer Julie North Schwarz. The books are all about using psychology to lose weight. This  Symmetry Press series of books shows that psychology is what is missing from the usual formula, weight loss = dieting + exercise. The missing psychology, according to Dr. Schwarz, has to do with adherence and personal change. In other words, if you don’t stick to it, it won’t work; and in order to accomplish permanent weight loss, you have to change your old ways and develop new ways.

The Using Psychology to Lose Weight series illustrates how to use psychology to lose weight by taking traditional weight-loss issues and showing women how to use psychology to maneuver through them.

The first book in the series is a novel of passionate weight loss. It is called Breaking Up With Food: Maria’s Last Diet. It delivers its self-help by taking the reader deep into a woman’s psychology.

The 3-volumes of Psych Your Diet: A Daily Dose are handy advice manuals to use for each phase of the weight-loss process. They show a woman how to make the personal changes needed for each weight-loss phase.

Volume 1. Psych Yourself to Start supplies what you need to get going—inspiration, understanding, and how-to’s.

Volume 2. Psych Yourself to Stick to It gives you ideas, strategies, encouragement, and more so you can do what it takes to adhere to your weight-loss regimen—all the way to goal.

Volume 3. Psych Yourself to Keep It Off helps you see what you have to do to maintain your lost weight, and it explains how to go about doing it.

Stop Your Emotional Eating lays the groundwork for seeing emotional eating for what it is. It gives a compendium of emotional eating ideas, ways to think more fully and clearly about emotional eating. Stop Your Emotional Eating, of course, also tells how to stop your emotional eating, with strategies to use for all the different aspects of emotional eating.

To solve the problems that wreck a woman’s weight-loss attempts, there is Diet Tuffy: The Fun Way to Seriously Lose Weight. This workbook helps you target your toughest dieting and weight loss problem, come up with a brand new solution, and make an ingenious plan to put the new solution into action. With Diet Tuffy, a woman can square off against lack of willpower, low self-confidence, feeling deprived, too much stress, and any other weight-loss foe.

The most recent book in the series is How to Break the First Big Rule of Women Who Stay Fat. This book is a personal guide to breaking one of the rules in a woman’s life that has been working to keep her fat. Jobs Boom In Illawarras Disability And Community Care Sector

The increasing demands of an ageing population and a rise in the numbers of individuals accessing disability services are driving a jobs boom in the disability and community care workforce, with up to an estimated 400 new workers needed in the Illawarra region by 2017.

The Health Care and Social Assistance sector became the biggest employer in both the Wollongong and wider Illawarra region in the year ending August 2011, overtaking Manufacturing, Retail, Public Administration and Education for local employment.

Mike Field, Project Manager, Workforce Recruitment at National Disability Services recently launched a television commercial aimed at promoting the benefits of a career in the sector. The commercial features the experiences of Talia Low, who has cerebral palsy, and the inspiring professionals who have helped support her journey to start high school.

“There has never been a better time to explore a career in the disability and community care sector. Employment is booming, with up to 10,000 new workers needed in NSW to fill a wide variety of roles providing support for more than 380,000 people by 2017,” Mr Field said.

“Recent research found that more than half the number of respondents recognised the disability and community care sector as providing rewarding work, far ahead of other major industry sectors including retail, mining and manufacturing.

“The sector offers a broad range of career choices, from speech pathologists and occupational therapists to drivers, gardeners and IT professionals. Students and young people, return-to-work parents and career changers will play a vital role in filling job vacancies and providing high-quality support services in the future.

“You can go online and take a quick picture-based career quiz to find out what type of job in the sector would suit you best,” he said.

Greenacres Disability Services CEO Stephen Beard said his organisation had supported carecareers since it began in 2009 and recruits staff through the website.

“The carecareers website and online tools are an asset to Greenacres Disability Serviceswhen it comes to recruiting new staff” Mr Beard said.

“A career with a disability or community care provider like Greenacres offers not only a rewarding career, but job security, flexibility and good opportunities for training and career advancement.”

“Greenacres currently supports more than 900 people in Wollongong, Shellharbour, Nowra and surrounding areas each week. We look forward to the challenge of attracting new workers and offering greater career opportunities in years to come.”

PruHealth and Daley Thomson launch ‘Walk the Tube’ app

PruHealth, the UK’s fourth-largest health insurer and provider of the Vitality wellness programme, the world’s longest-standing incentive-based health improvement solution, has teamed up with Daley Thompson to launch a free ‘Walk the Tube with Daley Thompson’ app.

While the tube map app will enable commuters and tourists in London to avoid the crush of the London Underground during the particularly busy summer period, it more importantly provides an accessible and cost-effective mechanism for Londoners to make a longer-term commitment to their health by establishing a precedent of walking. This is particularly important when considered in light of the generally low physical activity levels in the capital, and the strong link that exists between walking and improvements in health.

While simple and intuitive, the app provides an array of information related to the journey, plus activity and behavioural motivators, including:
– Step-by-step walking routes with an at-a-glance tube map showing the number of steps between stations
– Built in pedometer that provides a real-time overview of the number of steps, length of time and calories burned on each journey
– Motivational messages from Daley Thompson throughout the journey
– An ability to save regular journeys and maintain a record of walking history to provide a summary of total distance covered, number of steps taken and calories burned
– Real-time alerts that provide updates on the tube service, and allow an assessment to be made on whether it will be quicker to walk or wait for the train.
– Enables users to share details via Facebook

Daley Thompson, a PruHealth Vitality Ambassador said: “It’s a well-documented fact that overall levels of physical fitness do not tend to improve and people are not generally motivated by seeing amazing athletic accomplishments at the Games. This is a handy tool that can be easily incorporated into people’s lives that could translate the current wave of national pride into personal action to make small changes to every day routines. Not only is it great exercise helping you tone up during the summer, but for visitors and Londoners alike it gives you the opportunity to try new walks, beat your own best times – all whilst discovering the capital’s landmarks you would miss while stuck underground.”

Neville Koopowitz, CEO at PruHealth added: “PruHealth launched the very first ‘Walk the Tube’ map seven years ago and this new app is the next logical step to meet the needs of how people now access and use information. Ideally we should all be walking 10,000 steps each day to keep ourselves healthy and we hope this app will show commuters how easy it is to do that at any time of the year and beat travel hotspots at the same time.”

The app is available for both iPhone and Android phones and is free to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Bupa International Launches Short Term IPMI

Bupa International has launched a new flexible short-term international private medical insurance (IPMI) policy, called Bupa Flex. The product will allow customers to purchase IPMI, but on a 3-11 month basis and anywhere in between, down to the day they require.

Previously, people moving abroad for less than a year did not have the option to buy a short term IPMI product. Bupa Flex will allow these customers to choose the length of their policy, offering them value for money, as well as access to all the benefits of being one of Bupa’s international health insurance customers.

Muriel MacCallum, marketing director, Bupa International, said: “We’ve listened to our customers and designed Bupa Flex specifically for their short term needs. If you are relocating abroad, or travelling on an overseas assignment through work, you don’t necessarily want to take out a full year’s policy, but you still want the comprehensive cover IPMI provides.

“This new product means that our customers will still have access to the appropriate care and treatment they need, wherever they are in the world (except the USA), through an insurance policy with a timeframe and price that suits their needs.”

Bupa International offers customers access to more than 200,000 medical providers worldwide and can settle bills directly with over 7,500 hospitals and clinics. Customers can contact Bupa International’s doctors and advisers for medical advice and guidance, 24 hours a day, and have access to a second medical opinion at no extra cost.

More information about Bupa’s short term international health insurance and quotes are available at www.bupa-intl.com/bupa-flex.

Smoking, Obesity And Lack Of Activity Named As Global Killers

Research published in leading medical journal The Lancet suggests that a lack of exercise can be as big a killer as obesity and smoking.

According to the study, approximately one third of adults do not do a healthy amount of exercise, and it is suggested that this could be causing 5.3 million deaths worldwide each year – the equivalent of one in ten deaths – from related illnesses such as breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Nutritionist Caron Leckie, who works for the UK’s largest provider of chef prepared meals and delivered diets, Diet Chef, comments: “In my experience the weather has a big impact on activity levels, certainly in the UK, and many people use it as an excuse to stay indoors and watch television, rather than getting out and about.

“In addition to this, thousands of our customers have jobs which see them sitting down at a desk for up to nine hours each day. It is logical that this sedentary lifestyle can be conducive to obesity.”

Ms Leckie also added that Diet Chef is “working hard to help people to lose weight with our calorie-controlled diet” and that as a company they are also “working closely with a personal trainer to offer advice and tips on how to move more, no matter what your age, weight or health status.”

It is recommended that adults should do a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, this equates to just over 20 minutes per day.

According to a report by the BBC, “researchers said the problem was now so bad it should be treated as a pandemic”.

Ms Leckie’s top tips for motivation to exercise include:
1. Add An Activity
2. Try Something Different
3. Find a Positive Each Week
4. Take up a Hobby

New FDA Regulations Require More Of Opioid Drug Makers

In an effort to help decrease the number of deaths related to opioid overdose, the FDA is requiring pharmaceutical companies that manufacture opioids to help fund training programs for medical professionals. Along with the training funding, drug makers will also be required to provide safety pamphlets to patients explaining the risks and interactions of the opioids.

“The FDA’s new measure will hopefully prove to be an effective means to decrease overdose due to the misuse of prescription drugs,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Education of patients is particularly important. Some may think that the risk of overdose and the misuse of narcotics are widely known. However, we believe that some individuals still believe that taking just a few extra pills can’t hurt. In fact, that’s simply not true; taking a few extra pills can be the difference between life and death.”

In the past decade, overdose death rates within the United States have more than tripled. While a narcotic addiction can start off innocently, it can quickly become an acute, dangerous addiction. If you are concerned that your narcotic use may be spiraling out of control, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can help you get, and stay, on the road to recovery. Through their unique addiction treatment program, their team of professionals will customize a program that’s unique to your specific treatment needs. Their comprehensive family care program will educate your family as well and give them the tools to support your recovery process and help you on your journey to life-long sobriety.

Mountainside also provides services for those individuals who come to them with dual diagnoses and require the services of a Psychiatrist to help conquer the unique challenges that dual diagnosis brings.

The program, along with its professional addiction treatment team, have earned national recognition and resulted in Mountainside being invited to Washington by the White House to meet with the White House Drug Czar, John P. Walters, for an in-depth meeting on what makes its program so successful. These accolades did not go unnoticed within the addiction treatment field and resulted in the adoption by many throughout the country of a more holistic approach to drug addiction treatment.

Birmingham Men Opt To Be Hair Free

The Harley Medical Group’s Birmingham clinic reports rise in men seeking laser hair removal.

Following recent reports on the increase in men opting for beauty treatments, The Harley Medical Group reveal that the trend is being reflected at their Birmingham clinic, where it is Asian men opting for laser hair removal, that are making up most of the bookings.

Bookings at The Harley Medical Group’s Birmingham Clinic show that it is most commonly Asian patients looking for alternative hair removal for their face and body. Asian hair is typically darker and thicker than Caucasian or Afro Caribbean hair and grows at the quickest speed of 1.3 cm a month. Therefore laser hair removal is the ideal solution for permanent hair reduction.

Although there is an increase in men looking into Laser Hair Removal, the clinic also sees many darker haired women book in for treatment as a result of feeling self-conscious about excess hair especially on areas such as the face and arms. Patients want an effective way to reduce the amount of hair growth.

Naz Akhtar, Nurse Counsellor at The Harley Medical Group says: “Waxing and shaving can become costly and can leave skin dry and sore. With the average person shaving 11,540 times in one lifetime, hair grows back faster, darker and thicker as a result.

In comparison to waxing, laser hair removal has minimal discomfort and is an effective treatment for ingrown hairs. The laser treatment uses light to penetrate the epidermis (outermost layers of cells in the skin) to target the underlying hair. The dark pigment absorbs the light and destroys the hair and the root and further growth is hindered, leaving the skin with a smooth appearance. Our advanced lasers have been approved by the FDA (US Food and Drug Standard Agency) and can treat all Asian skin types.

Asian hair tends to be quite course and stubborn in comparison to that of our white and black counterparts, but responds brilliantly to our lasers. We see patients leaving the clinic feeling more comfortable and confident than ever before.”
