While the recent passing of Michael Jackson was certainly a shock, was anybody really surprised? Less than a generation ago, he was at the top to the charts, the top of his popularity and the top of his game. As his quirkiness began to overwhelm his talent, the stories and rumors began: Michael took painkillers. Michael lived on vitamins. Michael was addicted to diet pills. It went on and on. He even made a music video about all of the stories in the tabloids.
The sad part is, it turns out there may have been at least a kernel of truth to the rumors. Ultimately, it appears somebody injected him with something he’d been told to stop taking. He collapsed; he died. And sadly, we are not surprised.
Drug related deaths among the rich and famous are hardly unique. The early days of rock are riddled with drug overdoses and alcoholism: Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, and Moon. As our heroes aged, not much changed. In 2002, the Who’s John Entwistle died from a drug-induced heart attack at 57. Bobby Hatfield, the soaring tenor voice of the Righteous Brothers, OD’d on cocaine in 2003 at age 63! Michael Jackson himself was 50 – not a kid to be sure, but far too young to die.
Obviously, drug addiction and abuse does not go away if you live long enough. It knows no age limit. It can chase you your entire life.
Fortunately, for all of the affluent people who’ve dropped off this planet from drug abuse, it’s safe to assume that many more have received help in luxury drug rehab facilities.
However, many of these places have no more faith in their patients than the patients themselves. Such “patch-up†therapy is all too common and all too unsuccessful in the end.
Other facilities, however, truly cater to the luxury lifestyle of its clients, while delivering what they promise: complete withdrawal from drugs and alcohol for life. There is a lot of truth to the idea that if you surround the addict in a worry-free atmosphere, they are able to concentrate on beating their addictions. Rehab centers such as these do exist, and are successful beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. This is in part because their exclusivity helps them to work so well.
If you drive along California Highway 1 and glance at the homes on the Malibu coastline, you might never imagine that the stars and other affluent people in those homes were doing anything other than living their lives. Yet some of the country’s most advanced luxury rehab centers can be found there. Its guests are often names you hear in entertainment, but also executive business people who’ve made their fortune and don’t want to lose it all to their habits.
If only more people – known and unknown, celebrated and anonymous – who can afford the finest rehab treatment were to seek it out amidst their California neighbors and co-workers, they would assure themselves that they wouldn’t be the next big headline, the next promising life cut short.
