The Npower Health Through Warmth Scheme Has Been Commended In A National Report After Helping Nearly 2,000 Vale Of Glamorgan Residents With Cold And Damp Related Illnesses

The npower scheme has been referenced as an example of best practice by the Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) in a report prepared for the Energy Efficiency Partnership for Homes.

The Vale of Glamorgan is just one of 14 areas of England and Wales where the Health Through Warmth scheme operates, providing practical help, information and advice for vulnerable people who have inadequate heating and insulation, and whose health is adversely affected by their cold, damp living conditions.

Health Through Warmth is managed locally by the Vale of Glamorgan Council and relies on community workers such as health visitors, district nurses and housing officers, who observe cold and damp conditions first-hand, to refer people at risk.

Gary Ford, Health Through Warmth co-ordinator for the Vale of Glamorgan scheme, said: “It’s fantastic recognition to be referenced by a national body such as CSE. To date, the scheme has improved the levels of warmth, comfort and quality of life for nearly 2,000 people in the local community and we would like to remind residents that we are here to help.”

Health Through Warmth assesses each referral on an individual basis and accesses funding from a variety of sources including government grants, charitable funds, and the unique npower Health Through Warmth Crisis Fund.

Since the scheme launched in the Vale of Glamorgan in 2002, Health Through Warmth has facilitated more than £2,000,000 worth of heating and insulation measures in vulnerable people’s homes across the area.

MaineGeneral Health Selects AnyWare Group’s ROAM Platform For Remote Access

AnyWare Group Inc. announced today that MaineGeneral Health, one of the largest health care systems in Maine, has implemented AnyWare Group’s clientless remote access platform. The ROAM (Role Oriented Access Management) platform allows secure remote access to any designated application or file share within the health care system through a role-based portal.

Physicians associated with MaineGeneral’s Augusta and Waterville campuses may now use any PC or Mac, equipped with nothing more than a web browser and a basic version of JAVA, to access more than thirty applications within the health care system. Application examples include Eclipsys Sunrise, Allscripts TouchWorks, Philips iSite, Kronos and Lawson which reside in various environments including Citrix and Terminal Services.

“Initially we were looking for a very secure and cost effective remote access technology to connect our independent physicians to our EHR,” said Danny Burgess, CIO of MaineGeneral Health. “To be honest I had a very difficult time believing the claims of what ROAM could do for our organization. ROAM simply sounded too good to be true. Healthcare vendors routinely make extraordinary claims, but most have a track record of over-promising and under-delivering. It was not until we agreed to a ROAM pilot that AnyWare Group demonstrated they could do everything they said and much more.”

ROAM’s remote access capabilities have proven effective for the IT staff of MaineGeneral as well as a broad cross section of healthcare professionals. “The positive feedback from physicians has been overwhelming,” said Jimmy Mansir, System Support Technician. “Users are receiving the access they need, when needed”. “I have found ROAM to be an extremely powerful tool, simple to use and, best of all, it delivers only the applications that I require,” said Dr. Edward Ringel, Director of Clinical Informatics.

Continued testing in rural Southern Africa shows promiseful results for those with HIV/AIDS

AIDS Research Assistance Institute, a non-profit organization, has been monitoring hundreds of people with AIDS/HIV when they add the immunity boosting food supplement, ‘concentrated Flax Hull Lignans’ (FHL) to their diets. The results are better than expected and may hold a key for future researchers as they try to find solutions to the AIDS pandemic worldwide.

Boasting a 92% success rate, A.R.A.I. has been involved with rural Southern African grass roots organization leaders who have been giving FHL to people suffering from the AIDS/HIV virus. Typically when an HIV infected person adds 1.5 tsp of the FHL to their daily diet, their viral loads drop significantly (around 35% of them drop to non-detectable within the first 6 weeks!) and their CD-4 counts (measurement of immunity) raise in great numbers. A malnourished child will also typically start growing in height and weight once introducing the FHL into their diets. Many children have grown between 6-11 cm in a three month period!

Researchers can only speculate as to the exact function of the FHL that is causing the success. Many studies have been done in the U.S. by doctors that show lignans boost immunity. The FDA has reported that flax seed lignans have anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungus properties.* Tests have shown that FHL’s ORAC values (measurement of anti-oxidants) are very high. Kale, the super anti-oxidant dark leafy green vegetable, has an ORAC value of 1770, while FHL’s equivalent ORAC value is 19,600. FHL has typically been researched for it’s effects against cancer but now hundreds of people with AIDS/HIV are feeling better, going back to work, and are causing researchers to take a serious look at the possibilities of using a simple, all natural food supplement to help fight AIDS/HIV.
