Premier alcohol and drug rehabilitation program at Vista Bay

In a milestone event, the one-thousandth students has graduated from Vista Bay’s alcohol and drug rehabilitation program.

One thousand students have sought help with overwhelming drug or alcohol dependencies and, after successfully completing the drug treatment program at Vista Bay, most have gone on to lead happy and productive lives. In recognition of the significance of this accomplishment and Vista Bay’s contributions to surrounding communities, a wide range of civic leaders attended the graduation ceremony. Among the dignitaries present were: Gustavo Gonzales (representing Fourth District Supervisor of Santa Cruz County, Tony Campos), Aimee Mangon (Prevention Program Member for the City of Santa Cruz) and Mariaelena Tantalo (Neighborhood Services Manager for the City of Watsonville).

The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors honored Vista Bay with an official Proclamation. Notable among the points in the Proclamation was recognition for Vista Bay’s community involvement is its “crucial role in educating youth and eradicating drug use by participating in local events and activities.” Other examples of leadership in the fight against substance abuse were cited including: support and assistance provided to the Santa Cruz County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission, delivering drug education lectures to over 2,500 children in the Central Coast and Northern California regions, participation in the Watsonville High School Sober Graduation Night, and a series of testimonials by program graduates to the Santa Cruz Meth Project.

The students of the graduating class were understandably excited to be the focus of the gala ceremony. Completing the program means they have the opportunity to turn their lives around, and one of the students would boast that milestone number one thousand on their certificate.

For further information about Vista Bay and the recent graduation of the one-thousandth student from its alcohol and drug rehabilitation program, or for additional information about Vista Bay’s Santa Cruz area community involvement projects, please contact: 1-800-556-8885.

About Vista Bay:
Vista Bay launched its drug and alcohol rehabilitation program in 1992, in Bonny Doon, California. Established to help people suffering from chemical dependencies, with the goal of freeing them and their families from the devastation of drug or alcohol abuse, the program has proven to be extremely effective. Launching with “word of mouth” access, ongoing success necessitated the relocation of the residential treatment program to a larger campus above Watsonville. Vista Bay’s program now graduates 150 clients yearly and has grown to include a center in Placerville with a new center planned for South Lake Tahoe.

There Are Pearls In The Pain of Every Experience

Former Child Bride/Teenage Wife/Mother Realizes the American Dream: You Can Make It if You Try. Dr. Trevicia Williams’ stirring bounce back book, There Are Pearls In The Pain of Every Experience: Spiritual Truths about Life’s Experiences (ISBN: 0-9743519-0-3), cuts to the chase about her life as an African American teenager in an arranged marriage to a man of European descent in the United States. It’s about currents of faith, hard decisions and perseverance and ways to bounce back from near life shattering experiences.

Trends in the United States show Mississippi as the state with the highest rate of teenage pregnancies. However, Houston (Texas), the fourth most populous city in the U.S. is probably the last place one would expect to find a 13 year old African American girl facing discussions about an arranged marriage, and, at 14 years of age in an arranged marriage to a man of German descent 12 years her senior. That’s exactly where Dr. Trevicia Williams’ arranged marriage happened, and, at the age of 15 she became pregnant and gave birth to her daughter just before her sixteenth birthday.

How she survived an incredible start is in There Are Pearls In the Pain of Every Experience: Spiritual Truths about Life’s Experiences. It’s about being caught between childhood and forced adulthood, and having to make some very difficult choices: Taking high roads out of some very low places. Dr. Williams takes readers on a subtle journey between having to create a support system, being a child herself while being a responsible parent to her child. It’s about faith and adversity and Dr. Williams’ use of inner strengths. “I’m amazed when I hear the life stories of young women auditioning for shows like True Beauty and American Idol. Success requires an awareness of inner strengths and greatness, and, it is during the moment of decision that the course of life is determined, or, at the very least, the next experience” says Dr. Trevicia Williams.

About the Author
Dr. Trevicia Williams is a psychologist, trainer and speaker with over a decade of academic studies in human behavior. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston-Downtown, Master’s degree from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and Doctorate degree from Walden University. Dr. Williams’ passion for helping women optimize their potentials takes her into community based organizations speaking to girls and women about overcoming adversities. It also inspires her to travel across the U.S. with motivational, inspirational and educational conferences. Dr. Williams is a woman of titanium faith: Although Lakewood Church of Houston, Texas, Pastor Joel Osteen, is the church that she still calls her “home church,” she also enjoys worship at Northland Church, where Dr. Joel Hunter is the Senior Pastor, community in Orlando/Longwood, Florida.

The launch of the health site OmegaLifeLine.com boosts about all the health benefits of omega fatty acids and essential oils.

With consumer trepidation, it is great to see a site so dedicated to exploring the real health benefits of essential fatty acids. History tells us that during a weakening economy many people will suffer from poor eating habits as their buying patterns change.

Families will choose more budget conscious meals which may mean that they will save money in the short run, however if we take a step back and look at the long term picture it could equate to a more significant loss in the future.

As individuals health worsens (the culprit being a poor diet), society can expect to see a greater strain on an already taxed medical system. These individuals put themselves and their families at risk of more serious ailments. Diseases which could drastically reduce or end a families income.

Education is power and Omega Life Line is poised to educate men, women and teens about the necessity of consuming ‘healthy fats’. The modern diet is extremely unbalanced in the ratio of omega 3’s to omega 6’s. And that is a very dangerous and avoidable position for any person to be in.

Creator of the site Samantha Criddle explains, “everyday people are looking for miracle solutions to cure all their problems and sometimes it’s simpler than what they expected. The health benefits of omega oils are tough to ignore”.

What many people don’ t realize is that the body cannot manufacture the essential fatty acids that it requires to maintain proper body health and function. And that’s where people get into trouble. In understanding where to source healthy, nutrient rich omega oils, people can empower themselves and realize a healthier lifestyle.

For more information on omega oils we invite you to visit www.omegalifeline.com.

Pharmaceutical companies are actively involved in the improvement of public health, all over the world, through their various access to medicine programs

Pharmaceutical companies ratchet up access to medicine programs in poor countries

Pharmaceutical companies are actively involved in the improvement of public health, all over the world, through their various access to medicine programs.

France-based pharmaceutical giant Sanofi-Aventis, which also has offices in U.S., runs Partnership for Prescription Assistance, a program that it says bring together pharmaceutical companies, doctors, community groups, doctors, and patient advocacy organizations to ensure vulnerable populations have access to medicine.

Norvatis, while acknowledging the issue of access to medicine is complex, partners with the World Health Organization (WHO) and nongovernmental organizations in access to medicines programs it runs in developing countries.

Johnson & Johnson runs a website (Access2wellness.com) and a call center for middle income families in the U.S. who might be in need of their access to medicine programs. The company also runs access to medicine programs in developing countries where it has operations.

GlaxoSmithKline says it’s one of the few pharmaceutical companies researching and developing drugs and vaccines for three diseases the World Health Organization feels receive less or no attention from the pharmaceutical industry: HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. “We look for innovative ways to increase access to medicines,” says the company on its website.

“A few widespread and life-threatening diseases lack effective treatments, while for many others (such as malaria) existing treatments are becoming less effective due to drug resistance,” Adds the company.

7 Tips of Fighting Eye Wrinkles and Fine Lines Effectively and Some of the Best Eye Creams Do Work

Fine lines reveal the secret of a person’s age. The skin around the eyes is particularly sensitive and fragile. Do not wait until you have fine lines and wrinkles to start using eye creams. It is difficult to eradiate fine lines and wrinkles after their emergence. Taking preventive measures – apply an eye cream that delivers anti-aging and firming functions sooner is the best way to fight eye wrinkles.

Generic and lifestyle aside, half of your success of preventing and reducing fine lines and wrinkles relates on choosing the appropriate anti-aging eye cream, and the rest is how to apply an eye cream correctly.

Protecting the eye skin area by coating it with the appropriate eye care products daily and nightly are the basic steps. When applying an eye cream, do not indiscriminately wiping or spreading it over the eye skin area. It is necessary to use a correct method to help the eye cream to penetrate into the skin effectively.

Tip 1
Understand your skin type and do some research before buying an anti-aging eye cream on whether its ingredients are appropriate to your skin. This helps the skin care ingredients to address the problems of the skin more effectively and the possibilities of irritation and inflammation can be greatly reduced.

Tip 2
Pick an anti-aging eye cream with sufficient amount of active ingredients. The effectiveness of reducing wrinkles and fine lines depends on whether the active ingredients (e.g. high strength ascorbic acid, growth factor, peptide to name a few) work on your skin and penetrate into your skin with sufficient amounts.

Tip 3
Start with the lowest possible concentration of active ingredient. Before trying the eye cream on the eye skin area, apply it on the neck first. If no irritation occurs in 24 hours, you can apply it to the eye skin area. After 2 weeks, you can consider increasing the strength if needed.

Tip 4
Cleanse the skin before applying any products. Apply the eye cream when the skin is still moist. Using heat of the fingertip to warm the eye cream, and then use the middle finger to gently press the eye cream on the eye skin area.

Tip 5
Spend a few minutes every day for a deep massage over the eye skin area. Not only can it enhance ocular circulation, but also reduce the appearance of dark circle and puffiness.

Tip 6
Apply a non-comedogenic sunscreen on the eye skin area during the day time.

Tip 7
Do not apply acne products on the eye skin area. Also do not apply too many eye care products on the eye skin area at one time.

Best Eye Creams Recommendation? No problem,

1. Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum
Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum contains a concentrated form of amino-peptide complex that hydrates to firm and visibly lift skin around the entire eye area. Skin’s natural glow will be restored and skin is left feeling velvety smooth.

One of the hardest parts of addiction recovery is taking that first step and verbalizing that a problem really does exist

Until that point it is easy for an addict to pacify the negative behavior as a way to relieve tension or handle a bad day in the office. Somewhere inside there is a little voice telling the addict that the behavior goes way beyond that flimsy excuse.

An addict’s worse fear is confrontation about what is going on in his or her life. They go to great lengths to avoid uncomfortable discussions to the fact with family and friends. When a boss starts hinting at an addiction problem, the addict quits his job and walks out the door. When a friend brings up the same problem, the addict walks away and deletes the friend out of her cell phone address book. Great life changes are made to avoid these situations.

Addiction takes on various formats. There is eating disorders, drugs, alcohol, anxiety, depression and the list goes on and on. Each addiction starts with its own circumstances. Likewise each addiction also comes with its own hurdles that must be overcome if an addict has any hope of recovery. Still the recovery process is not easy.

Cliffside Malibu is a place to start. Staff is trained in the areas of addiction treatment and knows how to be that effective first hand reaching out to an addict in the moments when all hope feels lost. One of the first steps that staff members take once an addict arrives for treatment is to engage in an intervention process.

The target objective of a staged intervention is to call attention to the addiction without allowing for excuses or escape options to be given. This may seem like a harsh way to start a rehabilitation process. However the staff at Cliffside Malibu knows that in order to be a successful drug rehab program, steps must be taken for the addict to face their addiction problems as soon as possible.

For this intervention to work, staff may approach family and friends about their participation in the event. Addicts often forget that they are not the only injured parties in this situation. Family and friends bear the brunt of anger, stress and addictive behavior as the addict stops at nothing to get that next soothing fix. These are the people that know the addict best. These are also the people that have been hurt the most by the addiction.

Staff at Cliffside Malibu is aware of these and other issues that will come up as the intervention process begins. There is a specialized intervention team in place at all times ready to help the addict make that first step towards admitting there is a problem. Addicts may get angry and say or do things that would be viewed as hateful in the outside world. Intervention members do not stand in judgment against the addict or turn their backs. Instead a helping hand is offered and the addict is made to feel safe and secure. In this environment many times an addict feels secure enough to come to terms with the addictive behavior and let the recovery and healing process begin.

Once this admission has been made, productive alcohol treatment can begin. Intervention team members are with an addict from the moment he or she walks through that door. From that point a personalized treatment plan is devised that will best meet the needs of that addict. Team members work to set a starting point that will get the addict moving in the right direction. After awhile those hateful moments of the first day intervention are replaced with life long friendships towards a staff that helped the addict get back on track and make a new choice for life.

There’s a way to relax and be as stress free as possible while undergoing alcohol treatment in Malibu California

And yes, it’s the same Malibu that’s home to many celebrities and those seeking a California beach lifestyle.

Many strolls through the beachside location will help focus thoughts on the changes ahead. Chefs prepare terrific meals which you may eat in the airy and light dining room. Guest rooms are spa-like and refreshing. There’s a new buzz going around about addiction treatment, and you’ll find the answer right here at Sunset Malibu. Relaxing in the lovely gardens or taking in a Pacific sunset, or perhaps talking with new friends also undergoing treatment, or just being alone in your guest suite reading a book, will help you focus on addiction treatment and getting better.

Alcohol addiction is a monster of a disease and it’s often chronic. But, how do you even contemplate breaking out of the mold of this treacherous path? Trying to make a go of getting better on your own is, to quote an old cliché, a great uphill battle. Once you have decided for yourself that life must get better, contact the professionals here at Sunset Malibu. Just making that first decision to call and receive any information you need, will relieve a lot of stress that you may be feeling.

Undergoing an alcohol rehab program is not easy. The thing is about any kind of addiction treatment – it must be personalized to be effective. While advice from a friend may be of help in some ways, why not save yourself a lot of time and wasted energy – energy not directed towards getting better – by going direct to the source for one of the best in Southern California. The huge number of programs offered here at this facility helps ensure that each person that needs help gets it and can be sure that the treatment is a perfect fit.

The kinds of programs offered at Sunset Malibu are called holistic. They treat the whole person here instead of focusing on just the drug-caused problems. It is like, at most rehab places, they are treating just your hand or perhaps maybe just a foot or leg. And honestly, how good would that be? A whole human being with an addiction problem has to be treated as a whole person, hence the holistic approach.

People from every ethnic group and background can suffer from the disease of alcoholism. Best results are obtained when a recovery program is tailored to each individual’s needs. And why not undergo this recovery in a facility that offers luxury amenities and a smaller number of guests? How can recovery and the experience itself be very effective if there are few undertrained staff, many people trying to get help at the same time, and a mediocre organization that is merely “doing their best”? Sometimes in literature, addiction is almost glamorized. It is not glamorous. It is a disease and what’s glamorous about a disease?

When you sign up for addiction treatment at Sunset Malibu the cliff side vista and blue Pacific vistas will help you to relax and concentrate. They have two acres of wonderful grounds, gourmet chefs, five star-like guest rooms, even a personal trainer for the gym. The fitter you are mentally, the better you will be able to concentrate on recovery from your addiction. Someone you know may have descended into the living purgatory that can be addiction. Don’t let it happen to you when help is close at hand.

So, if you have decided to “give it a go” and begin your recovery to health and a sense of wellbeing, try the new approach at Sunset Malibu. After your stay is over here, and as you are driving away, you know deep inside that whenever you pass by Sunset Malibu, at whatever time of the day, you will always think of this place as your sunrise, and never your sunset.

Professional staff offer the most gentle and effective care for alcohol, drug and food addictions, plus depression.

If you have been wondering about how it would feel to undertake drug rehab, then wonder no more

Drug treatment professionals are waiting at Sunset Malibu, a wonderful addiction treatment center above the Pacific, in Malibu California. Before beginning treatment a guest has to understand what drug addiction actually is and what drug rehab will involve. There must be a commitment on the part of the guest to undertake the treatment and have the desire to do so.

About fifteen million people in the U.S. have a form of addiction and it can run to quite of lot of things – such as drugs, alcohol, depression and even food. Addiction is not a choice so neither is getting help. Possibly the thought is daunting. A person can even get settled and comfortable, in a way, into an unhealthy and potentially deadly lifestyle. Why should you change, you may ask yourself, well, you can die, that’s why. And I think that in most people’s opinion, being alive is better than not being at all. When you are under the fog of addiction, things may seem unreal. Well, in a way, they are. This is not a normal way of living, therefore, they are abnormal. Only you can take the first step.

Deciding to get better and entering a drug rehab program is up to you. No one chooses to become addicted. You don’t wake up one day and tell yourself – “Oh, I’d love to live life like the sludge at the bottom of a swimming pool”. But you can, fairly easily, consider entering an addiction program. And if you make a wise choice and enter a program with a highly qualified set of professionals and stay at a wonderful place with innovative and gentle treatment, then you may find yourself, quite soon, swimming towards the sunlight sparkling at the top of a now clean and bright pool. No more bottom dwelling for you.

One of the best drug treatment centers, Sunset Malibu, has luxurious accommodations, more like a spa retreat, than anything else. As treatment centers are a place of hope, not despair, this can only help you on the path upwards towards recovery. You have to feel, and get involved, with the healing of your body and life. Trained professionals will help guide you. How much better is it not to try and go it alone? How much better to have caring people with an individualized and innovative program bring you upwards toward a new and renewed life.

You get a lot of aftercare and a support network from Sunset Malibu. People may look at you differently after a stay here. If you feel better on the inside, you will absolutely look better on the outside. Your mind will be in great shape, too. Think of all the things lost to you while you were addicted: Respect from your friends and family; love and creativity; hope and joy. Then think of all the things to be regained, and gained: They are the same things, and then some.

Millions of people in the U.S. are under the oppression of drug addiction. They are ordinary human beings just like you. Although there should be no stigma attached to an addiction disease, there often is. People say to themselves: “Oh – this person should just want to stop and then they can. It only takes willpower.” Well, that’s wrong. It takes a lot of courage and the ability to seek help. It takes one phone call to Sunset Malibu to get you started. And remember, their approach is gentle and innovative and holistic. Don’t be afraid of taking that crucial first step.

Do put your foot on the first flagstone of the path leading upwards, and give Sunset Malibu a call today. Their genuine caring and professional attitude can, and will, only help you. When you have a wonderful center like this facility is, and caring professionals to help you in gentle ways, who wouldn’t want to helped out of the darkness.

About Sunset Malibu: Professional staff will guide you to health at this rehab and addiction treatment center.

Find an Unlikely Friend through a Premier Drug Rehab Center

Drug rehab center can be one of the scariest moments in a person’s life. The fear of not knowing what will be found on the other side of that door is crippling. Match this with the fear of what a new life will have to offer when the first steps are once again taken outside that same door. Only this time, the addict is re-entering society as a sober person. This scenario is what keeps many from seeking treatment in the first place.

Addiction to drugs and alcohol does not paint a pretty picture of life. There are loved ones scarred by the damage of an addict who will stop at nothing to get that next fix. Jobs are lost because a boss just can not tolerate one more late morning or missed day of work for what is long perceived to not be ‘illness’ related. It is at these moments that addicts begin to feel the emptiness. This emptiness drives the addict to find love and acceptance somewhere in some place.

It does not matter if that other place or time is a bottle or a needle being injected into the arm. All an addict knows is that place of acceptance and non judgment has finally been found. If this sounds like you do not fear there is help waiting just around the corner. Make a new friend and gain a fresh rehabilitated start to life at Cliffside Malibu.

Make no mistake the alcohol rehabilitation you will undergo here is not going to be easy. When times are tough you can not phone in a replacement or have a Hollywood ‘stand in’ go through the treatment steps in your place. This is your addiction and only you can make yourself better. But you do not have to do that alone. The personnel and staff at Cliffside Malibu will be there with you every step of the way. Your drug addiction more than likely entails a painful drug detoxification process. Even then you will not find yourself alone. Your new friends will be right beside you helping you every step of the way.

You may think that you do not deserve treatment. You make think that no one cares whether or not you even receive treatment in the first place. This could not be further from the truth with Cliffside Malibu. To the staff here you are more than just a patient number on a page or a dollar amount in the bank account. You are a living, breathing human being who made a few wrong turns in life. Let the staff at this premier drug rehab center help you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back to an addiction free life that you deserve.

You are fully aware of the fact that there have been some mistakes made along your path in life. No one needs to hold this over you in judgment or remind you of it on a daily basis. The staff at Cliffside Malibu is not there to humiliate or demean you. That would critically impair your road to recovery. Instead you will be provided with treatment options that empower you as a person. You will be reminded of the value you have in life and it is something that you will discover all on your own. This is the valued difference that sets Cliffside Malibu apart from others in the rehabilitation industry.

Flip through the yellow pages of the phone book or jump online for a quick Google search and you will soon find how many rehabilitation centers are available. No two centers are alike. It is imperative that you find one that suites the needs of your addiction. Select a rehab center that will go the extra mile in making sure your life outside the center is just as successful as your life inside the center. Cliffside Malibu can be that place for you.

About Cliffside Malibu:
Cliffside Malibu offers treatment program approaches based on individual need rather than a mass group approach. All treatments are tailored to each addict and include equine therapy, acupuncture and yoga. The National Center for Health Statistics reported recently that the number of children diagnosed with food allergies has spiked eighteen percent in the last ten years

Dr. Armen Ketchedjian, author of the book Will It Hurt? A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery, explains that the best way for parents to keep track of their child’s changing health needs is to keep up with regular appointments with the pediatrician and to log any sudden changes in temperament or physical condition following a meal.

“Pediatricians use these regular visits as a way of establishing a baseline for your child’s state of health,” says Dr. Ketch, as he is called by his patients. “It’s important that parents show up to these appointments and notify the pediatrician of any unusual activity.”

Dr. Ketch added that laboratory tests can verify most allergies but that pediatricians are also a good resource because they are trained to notice any differences in physical health that should raise a red flag. Symptoms associated with an allergic reaction include:

-hives
-wheezing and other lower respiratory problems
-vomiting
-nausea
-stomach cramps

In his book, Dr. Ketch advises that most allergic reactions will express themselves in anywhere from the first minute following a meal to a few hours afterward. He recommends that parents set an appointment with their child’s pediatrician following these incidents, especially if the reaction was severe enough to warrant a hospital visit.

Will It Hurt? helps educate parents about pediatric surgery. It is an easy-to-read resource that will give you, your child and your family the help and reassurance you need to make the surgical experience as stress-free as possible.

Listed in The Guide to America’s Top Anesthesiologists by the Consumer Research Council of America, Dr. Ketch trained at Cornell Medical Center, with a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a pain management elective at Boston Children’s Hospital. He has also worked to help develop new techniques in ambulatory anesthesia, taught medical students and residents, and cared for more than 10,000 patients.

Dr. Ketch is also the author of the children’s book Golden Apples (winner of the 2008 Reviewer’s Choice Award), a beautifully illustrated book that aims to help educate children about the dangers of drug abuse.

The Wohrle Dental Implant Clinic and Dr. Peter Wohrle are now able to offer patients Same Day Dental Implants at their Newport Beach California Dental Implants Clinic

BACKGROUND: About 22 million people in the United States have dentures or no teeth at all. Dental implants can offer a welcome alternative for those who want to regain their smile. The first modern dental implants hit the scene in the 1950s, and they’ve improved quite a bit over the years. Dental implants provide a base for replacement teeth that look and function like natural teeth. The implants are tiny titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone grows to the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.

According to the American Dental Association, the number of implants placed by dentists increased 49 percent between 1995 and 1999.

STANDARD IMPLANTS: Typically, dental implants are done in two surgical procedures. The dentist will have to refract (peel back) the gum tissue to see just where the implants will go to avoid sensitive nerves. When the proper placement is decided, the dentist will then place the implants into the jawbone. For the first three to six months following that surgery, the implants, which are just below the surface of the gums, bond with the jawbone. While the implants are bonding with the jawbone, new replacement teeth are made by the dentist. When the implants are fully bonded with the jawbone (again, a process that takes up to six months), the dentist is ready to fit the new teeth. The second procedure you undergo includes uncovering the implants and attaching the posts that act as anchors for the artificial teeth. The teeth are then attached to those posts. The entire process takes up to nine months to complete.

NOW, FASTER, EASIER IMPLANTS: Now, dentists are offering an innovative way to give you dental implants and teeth in a one-hour office visit. At an initial patient visit, doctors take a 3-D image of the patient’s jaw using an iCAT machine. When used with new computer software, the images show dentists the exact anatomy of the patient’s jaw, finding even the smallest amounts of bone. Dentists can plan the surgery with pinpoint accuracy using these images and eliminate any potential problems before the patient even arrives at the office for the procedure.

Peter Wohrle from The Wohrle Dental Implant clinics in Newport Beach, California says, “with this new technique, we can treat patients more efficient, with less pain, and more accuracy” Most procedures are done by cutting open the gums. No cutting means less trauma and less pain for the patient. When the patient comes for their implants, it takes about an hour to insert the implants and attach the teeth. Dr. Wohrle says: What used to take months, we often can accomplish now within hours, with much less trauma and better results.”

Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. 60 million Americans are at RISK for developing Glaucoma

Dr. Lynnette Williams-Young, S.A.V.E Program Coordinator, in conjunction with National Glaucoma Awareness with support from Park Avenue Laser Vision, Dr. Emil Chynn and Roman Iospa, CEO of BiCOM Inc., home of Glaucoma Eye Test, are providing free Glaucoma screening events for the whole community.

Prevent Blindness America Survey found that:

  • Blindness ranked third (after cancer and heart disease) as people’s major fear.
  • It is estimated that over 4 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it.
  • Glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African-Americans than Caucasians.
  • Everyone is at risk for glaucoma from babies to senior citizens. Yes, older people are at a higher risk for glaucoma but babies can be born with glaucoma (approximately 1 out of every 10,000 babies born in the United States).

National Glaucoma Awareness Month presents an opportunity to educate and screen those most at risk for developing the “sneak thief of sight”. Dr.Williams-Young is the coordinator for the S.A.V.E program.

The “Sight for A Vision Exchange” is a program inspired by Sis. Mae McGill and Bishop James Gaylord and developed by Dr. Chynn and Dr. Williams-Young to raise $50,000 to benefit the Capital Stewardship Campaign of Kelly Temple Church.

Through the partnership between Park Avenue Laser Vision Center and Kelly Temple, we will be able to provide quality affordable laser vision correction for church members. Also, we will be able to provide education about laser vision correction and educate about maintaining a lifetime of good ocular health. Ultimately, this will reduce the fear of laser vision correction in the African American community.

Glaucoma screenings will be performed with BiCOM’s non-invasive, through the eyelid Tonometer Diaton (www.GlaucomaEyeTest.com) – the newest, safest way to screen for high intraocular pressure (IOP), which can be an indication of Glaucoma.

Join us for a free eye pressure screenings at Park Avenue Laser Vision 102 East 25th Street (& Park Avenue South). Call Park Avenue Laser Vision with any questions and directions at 212-741-8628.

The Harley Medical Group has noted an increase in the number of women booking in for Body Balancing surgery

The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s leading cosmetic surgery group, has revealed an increase in the number of women undergoing Body Balancing surgical procedures, with patients investing in body tailoring to balance out proportions of pear shaped figures, remove “muffin tops” (the name given to the layer of stomach fat that hangs over a waistline) and to correct asymmetrical boobs.

“Symmetry has an evolutionary basis for determining beauty and has long been an important part of looking good to attract a mate,” commented Lisa Littlehales, the Harley Medical Group Clinic Manager,Cosmetic surgery is used to sculpt the body and, whether they are a size 0 or a size 16, women are requesting plastic surgery to help make their body symmetrical and to balance out the ratio of waist-to-hips-to-chest.”

The Harley Medical Group also revealed the specific procedures women are undertaking to balance their bodies, with breast balancing being one of the most popular. Half of women who come to The Harley Medical Group have a breast imbalance of up to a cup size. The most common sized breast implant at The Harley Medical Group is the equivalent of a C cup but corrections can be made in breast size up to an accuracy of the size of a teaspoon. As well as perfecting an imbalance, breast augmentation is increasingly used to reshape “rectangular” women, defined as someone whose waist is less than nine inches smaller than the hips or bust.

Another popular procedure according to The Harley Medical Group is the “Muffin Top Op”, which gets rid of the layer of stomach fat that hangs over the waistline. A “Muffin Top Op” is carried out as a day case and can only be performed on those that are within a healthy BMI of 28. The results are immediate and once a fat cell has been removed it rarely grows back so, as well as banishing those love handles, a tight tummy is also easily achievable.

The Harley Medical Group also revealed a large number of women are undergoing “Pear Reshaping”, with an estimated 70% of British women being pear shaped.

Lisa Littlehales said: “As this body shape ages, it is prone to developing a “square” bottom shape, so at The Harley Medical Group, we do a reshaping operation to help balance the proportions of the top half with the lower half of the body and simultaneously make the hips less angular.”

The pear reshaping operation is again a day case and the recovery period is around six weeks.

Weight loss specialist and controversial author slams the diet industry for creating an “addiction” to buy into their products

The author of Rebel Diet, the controversial diet book which was recently released has today said that the diet industry must be capped in some way.

Emma James said “there is so much hype and mystery created by the diet industry in order to keep people buying into their products. Even Paul McKenna has jumped on the band wagon with no idea about diet and weight management. There must be some kind of regulation put on misleading and marketing pitches to hook people into the diet vortex”.

Speak out about the situation she also stated that entire ploy was to ensure people never got all the information to allow them to learn what works for their own body and therefore free themselves from the dependence on diet meals and systems. She said “even people with comfort eating problems and real disorders are getting dragged into this “creating a need” philosophy of selling instead of outlining how to solve the problems themselves”.

The author flies to Las Vegas next week to speak at the Building Bridges seminar on the 8th February at the Tuscany Suites Conference Centre and to speak out about the role of the therapist in the diet industry and about her book which claims to give “missing link” to the reader and free themselves from the Diet Hell.

She also plans to launch webinars for people wishing to opt out of the diet chains later in the year and provide practical information for the user to take over their own weight management and address eating related problems.

Following the disastrous weight loss surgery experience of TV personality Anne Diamond in Europe, SurgiCare has urged anyone seeking a similar procedure to stay in the UK

SurgiCare, the cosmetic surgery specialist, has warned people seeking weight loss surgery to stay in the UK to undergo the procedure, instead of going overseas, following the terrible experience of TV’s Anne Diamond.

Ms. Diamond travelled to Belgium for the weight loss surgery that would fit her with a gastric band after unsuccessfully trying to lose weight by traditional methods, such as dieting. Unable to question the nurses regarding the operation due to the language barrier, Ms. Diamond blindly underwent the procedure.

The operation, which limits the stomach’s capacity for food by tightening a silicone loop three quarters of the way up the stomach, brought very little change to Ms. Diamond’s weight however and upon researching the procedure, Ms. Diamond returned to Belgium to have a ‘fill’, where the surgeon injects some saline into the port of the band to inflate it and increase the restiction. This also made no difference to Ms. Diamond’s weight.

It was only after consultation with a private medical company in the UK that Ms. Diamond was told that the gastric band was in the wrong place, a problem that could have been avoided if the procedure had been done under X-ray as it is at many clinics in the UK. After undergoing the operation once again, this time in the UK with nurses and surgeons she could communicate with, she managed to lose three stone before her weight reached a plateau.

Ms. Diamond’s experience isn’t a rare occurance with many surgeons in the UK admitting to having to repair gastric bypass operations that have been done in other European locations.

Caroline Deakin, weight loss manager at SurgiCare, said: “Surgery in the UK offers you peace of mind that you will be cared for in UK regulated hospitals, be able to communicate with all practitioners you have contact with and should you run into complications help is at hand 24 hours a day in a location not to too far from home.

“We would urge people not to go abroad; we have had several enquiries from distraught people who have opted for a cheaper option and who have been left high and dry; with very little or no aftercare at all and because of this they have not been able to utlise their procedure to its full potential resulting in little or no weight loss as well as suffering avoidable complications.”

Aftercare following gastric band surgery can last indefinitely, following an initial two year period with annual appointments.

Anne Diamond also commented on her successful UK operation, telling the BBC: “I was confident that it would work, because now I knew several people for whom it had been successful.

“And this time, I wasn’t so frightened about the operation itself. I understood the procedure, was able to talk it through, ask lots of questions.

“Weight loss surgery is certainly not the first step – and for many people it would never be an option. But it can help many people reverse their slide into ill health and possibly very serious conditions.”

The Harley Medical Group has released its figures for 2008 while also revealing the cosmetic surgery trends that are expected in 2009

The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, has reported that the “city boy bonus” cosmetic surgery, which is usually buoyant early in the year, has been replaced with what’s been dubbed “city severance surgery” where city bankers are using their redundancy packages to rejuvenate their appearances for the challenges they face when trying to secure a new job.

Harley Medical also reports that the last three months and into January 2009 has seen a “softening” of 2008’s strong Breast Augmentation market which was popular with 20-something women in particular, whilst the “silver surgery” market has seen an increase. Overall, 2008 was a bumper year for the Harley Medical Group, with surgical business up 26% year on year.

Liz Dale, Director at the Harley Medical Group commented: “The market is moving almost on a weekly basis in 2009, with our City and Marlow clinics seeing a decline on “city boy bonus surgery” but almost pound for pound this market has been replaced by the “city severance surgery” with City patients using redundancy money to fund cosmetic surgery procedures. This has been reported by our City, Chelmsford and Marlow clinics in particular, with over 230 patients coming through the doors of our 25 clinics over the last three months citing redundancy money as their funding source.”

Lorraine Midwinter took voluntary redundancy from Lloyds TSB after 31 years service. Just one month after being made redundant, she booked into the Harley Medical Group’s Bristol clinic and opted for liposuction to her chin and abdomen. She said: “I’d thought about having surgery for some time but losing my job helped me make up my mind to go ahead with the procedure. Having the procedure has given me a huge confidence boost. I managed to secure an excellent new job two months after my severance surgery.”

While the breast augmentation market has slowed down over the past three months, facial surgery has enjoyed an uplift of 9% over the last quarter, which is in part due to “city severance surgery” patients opting for facial procedures. Experts also claim that the uplift in facial surgery could be down to a desire amongst people to increase their employability by improving their “fresh faced appeal”. Rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and face lifts have seen the strongest three month growth.

In 2009 The Harley Medical Group predicts that while surgical procedures, without enjoying the big patient increases that have been common in recent years, will continue to make up the majority of the bookings, non-surgical treatments will continue to grow significantly in 2009.

The Harley Medical Group’s programme of 2009 non-surgical product launches has begun with the introduction of the Obagi Blue Chemical Peel. Following an 86% growth in skin treatments year-on-year for 2008, the highly effective Obagi Blue has been dubbed by doctors as the “Recessionista’s Facelift”, thanks to its striking results and relatively low cost.

Amongst the other new treatments due to be released in 2009 exclusively through The Harley Medical Group is the first and only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment for successfully reducing and removing stretch marks, a problem that afflicts nearly 90% of all women over the age of 25 and a new liposuction for removal of unwanted fat that is faster, less traumatic and far more effective that the current treatments available in the UK or Ireland.

About The Harley Medical Group:
The Harley Medical Group is the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, performing more procedures and with more clinics than any other cosmetic surgery provider. It has been established for over 25 years and is one of the most highly-regarded Cosmetic Surgery Groups operating in the UK. It has conducted over 450,000 procedures to date.

PruHealth reports millions of Brits are intend to walk more to improve their health but three quarters have no idea how much they actually need to do

According to the latest research by PruHealth, Britons will be tightening their shoe laces as well as their purse strings in 2009 as 20.5 million* intend to take up walking to get healthy and shed unwanted pounds.

PruHealth, the health insurance provider that rewards people for engaging in healthy behaviour, found that nearly two thirds of Brits (61%) planned to begin a new diet, health or fitness regime in the New Year. Of those, almost three quarters (70%) said they plan to walk regularly as part of their healthy start to 2009. However, the majority of those who want to exercise by walking (15.3 million – 75%) are far off the mark when it comes to knowing exactly how much they will need to do each day to benefit.

Currently the average Brit walks for 43 minutes a day (approximately 2.9 miles**), but acknowledges they need to do more and believes stepping this up to 57 minutes (or 3.8 miles) will provide the physical benefit they need. In reality health advice recommends everyone should in fact be taking 10,000 steps a day***, equating to nearer 5 miles or 75 minutes of walking. Encouragingly, 17% of Brits say they already walk around 10,000 steps a day, but a quarter (26%) feel they would need to dramatically change their lifestyle in order to achieve this.

PruHealth’s chief executive officer, Shaun Matisonn commented: “Walking is a great form of exercise so it’s very encouraging to see so many people wanting to incorporate it into their daily lives.

“There does, however, seem to be a misconception as to how much walking one should ideally be doing each day and the answer that it’s 10,000 steps is sure to come as a big surprise to many. It would be hard for anyone to hit this target immediately, but small changes such as getting off the bus a stop early, shopping locally without taking the car, or taking the dog for a longer walk, are all ‘steps’ in the right direction.”

PruHealth knows that it has never been more important for people to lead healthy lifestyles and PruHealth’s Vitality Programme encourages people to do so. Vitality Index covers five areas – education, exercise, nutrition, screening and smoking cessation – and members could earn points by participating in healthy activities related to each area. By earning points, members can move up to different status levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum) and earn lifestyle rewards, as well as potentially lowering the cost of their PMI premiums in the process.

* Research conducted by Opinium Research LLP 23rd – 30th December 2008,polling 2,233 British adults. Results have been weighted to nationally representative criteria (based on there being 48 million adults in the UK). 61 per cent of 48 million British adults intend to start a new diet, health or fitness regime = 29,280,000 adults. 70 per cent of these adults say regular walking will be part of this regime = 20,496,000 adults.
** The average respondent said they walked for 43 minutes per day. At an average of 4 miles per hour this equals 2.9 miles.
