Stevenage Co-operative Pharmacy Staff Help Man Who Falls On Ice

Staff at one of The Co-operative Pharmacy’s Stevenage local pharmacy branches came to the rescue of a passer-by when he slipped on the ice and hit is head during the ‘big freeze’ last week.

Stevenage Co-operative Pharmacy Staff Help Man Who Falls On Ice

After being alerted to the incident by a customer, supervisor, Sue Spicer, called an ambulance as the man had fallen over a low wall, injured his head and was losing blood.

Dispensing assistant, Sarah Day, calmly followed the instructions of the emergency services operator and alongside pharmacist, Hiral Patel, waited with the injured individual and made sure he was comfortable until the ambulance arrived.

As additional pharmacy staff looked after the Broadwater Crescent branch, Sarah and Hiral minimised the patient’s blood loss and provided blankets to keep him warm.

Hiral said: “We were just glad to have been on hand to help until the ambulance service took over. Most credit should go to Sarah who was extremely composed and efficient. It was a cold 20 minutes while we waited but then it was back to the branch and business as usual.”

Lloydspharmacy Unveil New Health Web Tool

Lloydspharmacy has launched a new web tool which allows people to work out how many of their work colleagues is carrying a sexually transmitted disease, drinks too much alcohol or is depressed.

The ‘Chances Are…’ Health Calculator, developed by community pharmacy chain Lloydspharmacy, is designed to stimulate debate and make health risks more relevant by applying nationally representative data to the workplace.

“People have become rather de-sensitised to national statistics,” said Andy Murdock, Governance and Pharmacy Relations Director of Lloydspharmacy. “When you hear that 15 per cent of the population is in danger of developing diabetes, it’s a bit meaningless, but when you discover, for example, in an office of 50 people, eight will be pre-diabetic and 10 of the men will experience some form of erectile dysfunction after turning 40, you’re more likely to sit up and take notice.

“That’s why we have launched this online tool. We hope it will be used in workplaces up and down the country, get people talking and encourage them to think about their own risk factors and what they can do to reduce their chances of developing lifestyle related diseases.”

The calculator asks visitors to provide information about the type of workplace they are employed in, along with the gender split and age profile of their workmates. It then raids its database to calculate how many colleagues have Chlamydia, how many men are likely to develop erectile dysfunction, how many are likely to suffer a stroke, how many have raised cholesterol, how many are hazardous drinkers and much more.

In many cases information is provided about the condition or the issue and guidance is provided about what can be done to reduce risk factors.

Purify Your Body’s Detox Foot Pads Are Packed With Powerful Ingredients That WORK!

Purify Your Body’s detox foot pads produce more negative ions and infrared light than ANY other pad and are the only pads with NO starch fillers. All ingredients are designed to work together to draw out and absorb harmful toxins.

Remember that as adults we have between 400 to 800 man-made chemicals in our bodies. Detoxifying is an acceptable and necessary part of living a healthy life in today’s world. Purify Your Body’s detox foot pads are one of the most effective and easiest forms of natural detoxification.

What poisons are you carrying around in your body? More importantly, how do you get rid of them? While eastern medicine has known and embraced the virtues of natural detoxing for many years, western nations are only just catching on. Yet it’s a natural, obvious, and effective health treatment which can cure fluid retention, food intolerances, gas or diarrhea, colds and infections, exhaustion, skin rashes, headaches or dizziness, insomnia, and a host of other problems.

As adults, we have around 400 to 800 man-made chemicals circulating in our bodies. Normal healthy body elimination processes do not remove all these chemicals. Food, drinks, polluted air, medications, stress, metabolism, disease, products applied to skin, synthetics, home and workplace chemicals contribute to the body’s toxin load which accumulates daily and builds up over the years.

Introducing the amazing detox foot pad. The detox foot pad warms and opens the pores of the skin to draw out and absorb accumulated wastes via the skin under osmotic pressure from the blood and lymph systems. The all-natural dry ingredients in the detox foot pads adhere to the soles of the feet like a big band aid overnight, when the body detoxifies. Depending on the individual, the detox may take two or three weeks to two or three months, or longer in the case of more severe disease or toxic build up.

Potent all-natural ingredients work together to draw out the toxic build-up in your feet, and in other parts of the body.

Toxins accumulate in the extremities. For hundreds of years Eastern medical studies have held the view that toxins progress towards the lower extremities in the body during the day. Assisted by gravity they accumulate from the tips of the toes to the ankles. Eastern medicine also understands that toxin accumulation leads to many degenerative diseases. For example, painful rheumatism and arthritis are caused by acidic toxin fluid gathered in the joints. There is another Asian expression that says aging comes from the foot.

NAICONS and NexThera Transfer Rights Of NAI-107, A New Anti-MRSA Antibiotic, To Sentinella Pharmaceuticals

NAICONS (New Anti-Infectives CONSortium) and NexThera Biosciences, Italian companies focusing on the discovery and development of novel anti-infective drugs, today announced that they have entered into an agreement with Sentinella Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a US-based pharmaceutical company established by Care Capital LLC, a leading life sciences venture capital firm. Under the terms of the agreement, Sentinella has acquired all rights to NAICONS’ proprietary lantibiotic technology, including its lead product candidate NAI-107, in exchange for an upfront cash payment, future development and commercialization milestones, royalties on future product sales and an equity stake in Sentinella. Lantibiotics represent a new class of natural products with potent bactericidal activity against gram positive bacteria including the multi-drug resistant pathogens MRSA and VRE.

naicons.jpg (230×242)

“This agreement represents an important recognition of NAICONS’s ability to discover and characterize innovative antibiotics with a novel mechanism of action”, stated Stefano Donadio, NAICONS’ Chief Scientific Officer. “Our technology is based on fermentation products and includes strong expertise in manipulating antibiotic-producing bacterial strains. This agreement further supports NAICONS’ mission of rebuilding the strong and successful Italian tradition in the antibiotic field.”

“Our partnership with a US-based pharmaceutical company represents the best opportunity to rapidly and successfully advance a potential life-saving drug into clinical development in its largest market. It also gives NexThera international visibility for developing additional anti-infective compounds”, said Daniela Jabes, NexThera’s Chief Executive Officer. “This agreement represents the first tangible result of the synergy between NAICONS’s discovery engine and NexThera’s development focus.”

nexthera.jpg (288×167)

“We are delighted to be entering into this transaction with NAICONS and NexThera,” said David Ramsay, a Director of Sentinella. “The principals behind NAICONS and NexThera have a successful track record in the discovery and development of anti-infective products, including rifamycins, penems, dalbavancin and ramoplanin , and we hope to build on that success to develop and commercialize an important novel class of antibiotics for the treatment of multi-drug resistant nosocomial infections.”

Every year several million people worldwide acquire infections while in hospitals, with significant mortality rates. Continuing a trend that began several years ago, it is estimated that approximately seventy percent of hospital infections are currently caused by pathogens resistant to at least one class of existing antibiotics. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) are among the most dangerous nosocomial pathogens.

According to the Infectious Diseases Society of America, drug resistant bacteria represent a significant economic burden because of the need for costly drugs, extended hospital stays and lost working days. The annual cost of infections by drug-resistant pathogens has been estimated as nearly $5 billion in the U.S. alone.

Making Every Chair Compatible With You – Back Rest Pillows

Each of us may have a favorite chair to sit on. More often, we think that a certain chair is more “compatible” with us especially when it makes us feel more relaxed and comfortable. However, the problem is, not all the chairs that we are comfortable in is ours. The thing we are left with is to find other alternatives on how to make our own seats comfortable and relaxing.

One great way of transforming your chair into a precious “throne” is by using one of those back rest pillows.

Back Rest Pillows

You see, the spine has altered curves which are best supported by special arrangements (say, a pillow) with a certain support at each single point. This way, the lower portion of the back is relieved from carrying too heavy a load. When this is done, the spine gets rest and the its overall health improves. The support received by the spine also gives fast relief to lower back pain.

Using back rest pillows is arguably the best technique to support the spine. These pillows are very flexible and easily mold into the shape of your spine’s curvature. It bridges the gap between your chair and your back which in turn provides you with a whole new restful sitting experience.

Aside from having a restful sitting experience, below are two of the advantages of back rest pillows:

• Flexibility– They are flexible. When you place them between your back and the chair’s backrest, they would fill up any empty space between the two. As a result each point of your spine receives support from the pillow.

• Mobility – These pillows for the back are relatively light. Not like ergonomic chairs, you can carry these pillows around your office, carry in your car, the airplane and other travel destinations. They are not only handy, they are also classy especially those made of Sunbrella outdoor fabric. They are definitely a must-buy if you want to get the most of your money’s worth. With them, you can now make every chair compatible with you!

Lumbar Pillows make a great practical gift for any occasion and for any age group.

Lloydspharmacy Wishes Customers A Flu-Less Christmas

Lloydspharmacy has announced that it has cut the price of its winter flu vaccinations by more than half price to encourage more people to protect themselves against the virus.

Recent research carried out by Lloydspharmacy found that take up for the vaccine has fallen this year. This could be due to a misguided belief that the swine flu jab will protect against winter flu**. However, price may also be a factor as people cut back during the recession. At £5, the Lloydspharmacy winter flu vaccine is now the cheapest on the high street compared to Asda and Tesco which are both priced at £8.00.

Chris Frost, pharmacist and director at Lloydspharmacy, said: “Winter flu can be debilitating and in some cases lead to very serious health issues. By making the vaccines available in our pharmacies across the country we’ve already improved access. Now they’re even more affordable we hope to have removed another barrier to people protecting themselves. The last thing anyone wants is to have flu over Christmas.”

Seasonal flu is responsible for the deaths of about 8,000 people in the UK a year and tends to affect the more vulnerable or elderly people. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control forecast that the swine flu and seasonal flu strains could each claim 40,000 lives across Europe this winter.

People over the age of 65 qualify for a free NHS seasonal flu vaccination as do people with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Others are able to get themselves protected on the high street. Lloydspharmacy offers a seasonal flu vaccination service in 260 of its pharmacies.

Lloydspharmacy Warns Not To Rely On Swine Flu Jab To Protect Against Winter Flu

Lloydspharmacy has warned that the number of people protecting themselves against seasonal flu has fallen this year, possibly the result of a misguided belief that the swine flu jab will protect against winter flu.

As of 6th November there had only been a 54% uptake in people aged 65 and over, and only 27% uptake by people aged 55 – 65 to date, of the seasonal flu vaccine. Opinium Research conducted for Lloydspharmacy among 2007 UK adults 4 – 6th November 2009. This is a big reduction compared with the 73.5% uptake in 2008 by over the 65s and 73.9% in 2007 (The Fifty-sixth World Health Assembly).

According to research conducted by Lloydspharmacy almost 40% of people wrongly believe that the swine flu vaccine will also protect them against seasonal flu. Even more worryingly, more than half (52%) of the over 65s – one of the groups most vulnerable to winter flu – thought they would be protected against both strains if they had had the swine flu vaccination.

People over the age of 65 qualify for a free NHS seasonal flu vaccination as do people with conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, chronic liver disease, lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment) or removal of the spleen, or if they are a resident of a nursing or residential home. Anyone who is the main carer for an elderly or disabled person and whose wellbeing may be put at risk if the carer falls ill, is also eligible for a free vaccination from their GP.

Others who are not eligible for free NHS treatment can still have an online consultation with a doctor and be vaccinated at high street pharmacies for a fee of£5, with Lloydspharmacy offering a seasonal flu vaccination service in 260 of its pharmacies.

Seasonal flu is responsible for the deaths of about 8,000 people in the UK a year and tends to affect the more vulnerable or elderly people. Last week the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control forecast that the swine flu and seasonal flu strains could claim 40,000 lives each across Europe this winter.

The World Health Organisation has urged national governments to put in place plans to vaccinate at least 75 per cent of people most at risk of seasonal flu by 2010.

“Whilst there is still time for vulnerable people to get themselves protected before late November (when the Winter flu season reaches its peak) we would certainly expect to see a higher uptake by this time of year,” said Clare Kerr, head of clinical services at Lloydspharmacy.

Innovative Medical Apparel Company Launches Men’s Lab Coats At Medica 2009 Conference

Medelita®, maker of breakthrough medical apparel, today announced the launch of its men’s lab coats, which are on display at Medica 2009, a leading international trade fair for the medical industry held in Dusseldorf, Germany. Medelita inaugurates its men’s collection with three varying lab coat styles, all named after distinguished figures in medicine: The Osler (44 in.), The Laennec (40 in.) and The Fleming (30 in.).

Men's Lab Coats

“Sophisticated, prestigious, innovative — these are words that medical professionals do not typically associate with lab coats,” said Lara Manchik, founder, Medelita.“But with the introduction of Medelita Men’s lab coats, male clinicians can now enjoy the same designer tailoring, high performance fabrics and upgrades that our female customers have raved about in our lab coats. The arrival of our men’s line is a natural evolution and we are thrilled to bring a product to market that’s long overdue.”

All Medelita lab coats are hand sewn in the U.S. using 100 percent pre-shrunk cotton, representing a significant improvement over traditional polyester/cotton blend lab coats with limited breathability. The lab coats feature a modern tailored fit, with finished inside seams and advanced fabric technology for unparalleled soil, stain, fluid and wrinkle resistance. While each style of Medelita Men’s lab coat is designed for a specific use, they are all available in contemporary menswear sizes 36-52.

The 44-inch Osler men’s lab coat is the modern version of the classic, full-length lab coat. Featuring five total pockets, including a concealed pocket for a PDA or Smartphone, the Osler lab coat is named after Sir William Osler, MD, CM, a Canadian physician, pathologist, educator, bibliophile, historian, and author, who is described as the Father of Modern Medicine.

The 40-inch Laennec lab coat is Medelita’s mid-length lab coat featuring abundant upgrades to this versatile physician lab coat. With a tailored, distinguished look and technically innovative features, this new men’s lab coat was named for René-Théophile-Hyacinthe Laennec, a French physician who invented the stethoscope in 1816, while working at the Hôpital Necker and pioneered its use in diagnosing various chest conditions.

The 30-inch Fleming lab coat is a hip-length lab coat, often called a “consultation” or “student” length lab coat. The Fleming is named after Sir Alexander Fleming, a Scottish biologist and pharmacologist who published many articles on bacteriology, immunology and chemotherapy. He is best-known for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for the discovery of penicillin, which he shared with two colleagues.

New 28-Inch Student-Length Lab Coat Answers Customer Demand For Shorter Style And Is Available For Pre-Order

Medelita®, maker of breakthrough medical apparel, today introduced the new Elizabeth B. lab coat to its collection of high performance women’s lab coats. Shorter than traditional coats, the Elizabeth B. is 28 inches in length and falls just below the hip on a woman of average height. The new, shorter-length lab coat is available for pre-order and will be available to purchase online November 6, 2009.

“The introduction of the Elizabeth B. lab coat is a significant milestone for us in that it answers countless customer requests, expressing the need for a lab coat with modern styling, sensible performance fabric features and long-lasting durability,” said Lara Manchik, founder, Medelita. “We chose to name the coat in honor of Elizabeth Blackwell, the very first female medical school graduate who paved the way for women in field of medicine. This appellation also honors customers of Medelita who continue to make significant contributions in their respective medical professions.”

At the turn of the 19th century, female doctors did not exist. But Elizabeth Blackwell changed that with her inspiring life’s work. Education played an important role for Blackwell, whose father moved the family from England to the U.S. Motivated by the desire to fill the unmet needs of women who preferred to consult with a female physician, Blackwell eventually sought a formal education during a time when medical schools simply did not allow women. Her application to the Geneva Medical College in New York was inadvertently accepted because students and the administration thought it was a practical joke.

Eventually, Blackwell’s persistence won her respect, admiration and the first U.S. medical degree awarded to a woman in 1849; however, she was barred from practicing in hospitals and set up a practice out of her own home. Among Blackwell’s many achievements was the establishment of women’s medical schools in the U.S. and in England. The educational institutions were the culmination of plans co-developed with Florence Nightengale, whom she met during the Civil War. Well into her later years, Blackwell continued to inspire and encourage women to study medicine. Today, women represent more than half of the students pursuing some form of medical education.

The Medelita Elizabeth B. lab coat is designed for those medical professionals who prefer technical advancements – not only in their clothing but also in their lifestyle. The fluid resistant lab coat is treated with Advanced Dual Action Teflon® fabric protector, which allows the fabric to repel and release stains, including blood, while maintaining a clean and crisp, polished appearance. Tailored for a feminine yet professional shape, the coats are sewn in the U.S. and feature the highest quality workmanship available in a medical uniform. Modern styling includes rounded lapels with complimentary pocket detailing, clean finishing of all seams, and a hidden inside pocket for transporting handheld devices and other useful medical tools.

Also called a consultation lab coat, the 28 inch lab coat is worn by students across numerous medical professions — medical school, dental school, physician assistant school — as well as by those medical professionals who simply prefer a hip length lab coat. Although the length is often a designation of a student, in some settings, the shorter coat is preferred or even required.

The new lab coat joins the Medelita collection of women’s lab coats, which range from the original, full-length Callia lab coat (38 in.), the Ellody (34 in.), to the Estie (38 in.) and Sophia (34 in.), all of which can be custom embroidered with name, title, and profession as preferred. Catalent Expands Capabilities In Testing For Melamine In Food And Medicinal Products

At a time when melamine-contamination has received global attention, Catalent Pharma Solutions continues its legacy of innovation by rapidly developing new FDA guidance-compliant tests for trace amounts of key contaminants in food and medicine. Incidents of melamine contamination in milk products, baby formula, dairy and non-dairy products manufactured in China have been widely reported, leading to product recalls and increased inspections by the FDA.

The current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) regulations require that all components (i.e. ingredients or raw materials) be tested before they are released for use in the manufacture or preparation of drug products (21 CFR 211.84). It is critical that all manufacturers determine whether they are using an at risk component for melamine contamination to manufacture or prepare a drug product.

In response to the FDA’s new guidance titled “Pharmaceutical Components at Risk for Melamine Contamination,” Catalent has successfully qualified a method for determining if suspect excipients are contamination-free to within 2.5 parts per million. The method is based on that provided by the FDA (Laboratory Information Bulletin No. 4423 “GC-MS Screen for the Presence of Melamine, Ammeline, Ammelide, and Cyanuric Acid”).

Catalent is now able to provide its customers successfully qualified and validated limits tests for trace levels of melamine, ammeline, ammelide, and cyanuric acid in lactose.

Melamine is a compound made of carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen and is typically combined with formaldehyde to produce a durable and moldable plastic that is fire and heat resistant. Trace amounts of melamine have recently been discovered to be toxic to dogs, cats, pigs, and chickens by veterinary scientists after kidney or renal failure occurred due to their food being contaminated with the chemical.

“Catalent is proud to have satisfied the demanding regulatory standards the US FDA has provided for detecting melamine,” said Kent Payne, Vice President and General Manager of Catalent’s Respiratory, Analytical and Biotechnology Services business. “Detecting trace levels of melamine in food and medicinal products at these levels is a challenging process, but is key to help avoid future public health crises. In order to support this critical public health need, Catalent can expedite this testing and provide results within 48 hours from receipt of samples

Little Sprout Imaging Was Pleased To Be Included In This Months Issue Of Angie’s List Health

Martha Morgan, the Founder of Little Sprout Imaging, was invited to respond to the controversy surrounding the industry and the recent ban of non-medical ultrasounds in the State of Connecticut. Rounding out the “Ask the Experts” panel is Dr. Jacques S. Abramowicz.

Little Sprout Imaging Was Pleased To Be Included In This Months Issue Of Angie’s List Health

Morgan admits that the industry has a less than desirable reputation. Earlier this decade, the FDA and AIUM expressed concern about the use of a medical device by untrained personnel. Yet, centers continue to open across the country with the business owner having learned how to operate the ultrasound machine in 2 days. Pregnant women assume that their state or the federal government oversees the industry. If Moms-to-be understood that 90% of the free-standing 3D centers were operated by laypeople rather than trained professionals, they would seek out the true professionals and consumer demand would settle the industry controversy. If we, as an industry, do not self-regulate; the states may very well legislate us all out of business. The State of Connecticut did exactly that effective, July 1, 2009.

Little Sprout Imaging has provided 3D / 4D ultrasounds in Maryland since 2004. Their service model includes medically trained Sonographers and physician oversight. Their high-standards take into account the FDA and AIUM concerns. This distinction earned them the 2006 Smart Woman Bravo! Business Achievement Award as well as the label “Mom and Baby Friendly” in the Greater-Baltimore region. In addition to their responsible business practices, technologically they are a leader in the industry. Little Sprout Imaging introduced webcast ultrasounds to the industry in 2006. Their webcast service; called SproutCast, is offered LIVE and OnDemand.

Medelita Joins AAPA in Celebrating National PA Week

Medelita®, makers of innovative high-quality scrub sets and lab coats for women in health care who excel in their profession and take pride in their appearance, joins the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) in celebrating National PA Week, October 6 – 12.

“National PA Week provides us the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of the central role PAs have in shaping the future of health care in this country, and across the world,” says Medelita founder Lara Manchik, who brings a decade of experience as a PA to her breakthrough line of medical apparel. “We’re honored to join AAPA in celebrating National PA Week and the professionals who deserve this recognition. AAPA is doing an outstanding job communicating the role of PAs in transforming health care — not just on the floor and by the patient’s bedside, but in our laws and legislation.”

Manchik points out that PAs have always responded to the changing needs of patient care. Launched in 1967 at Duke University Medical Center, the first PA program was developed to utilize the skills of returning Vietnam medics and fill a need for quality health care when and where it is needed most. Since then, PAs have continued to make cost-effective, quality health care accessible to more people who might otherwise have limited, or no, access.

Today, you’ll find PAs providing not only primary care, but also working with physicians across a spectrum of medical specialties. Says Manchik, ”Patients and physicians alike are recognizing the tremendous value that PAs, with their advanced training and knowledge, bring to patient care. They assume many of the same responsibilities of doctors, keep costs in check, and spend time with patients to completely understand their needs and goals. National PA Week allows us to acknowledge this contribution.”

During this year’s National PA Week, the AAPA is emphasizing the leading advocacy position PAs share in the current health care debate. Through grassroots efforts and awareness-raising campaigns, AAPA and its members are making sure legislators include PAs in the strategy to increase access to quality, affordable health care.

“National PA Week brings much deserved attention to these dedicated, extraordinary professionals,” adds Manchik. “Medelita applauds the AAPA and its members for their tremendous efforts and commitment to reform health care. We’re proud to provide PAs quality lab coats and scrub sets that reflect their exceptional dedication and professionalism.”

As part of the roll-out, some 900 suppliers working with these ten Trusts, including Kings College Hospital, Royal Brompton & Harefield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trusts, are now or will soon be providing filtered product, price and contract data via their dedicated web portal where they can securely and confidentially access data specific to them.

These acute and acute Foundation Trusts are pioneering the adoption of private-sector best practices and are keen to achieve the cost benefits of efficient supply chain management and data synchronicity.

Commenting on the continuing development of HL-hybris, Healthlogistics’ Director Peter Elwin said, “As a hybris Premium Business Partner, Tier 2 Consulting has a proven track record in system integration and configuration.
