Just For Diabetics Website Offers Hope for Pre-diabetics, Type 2 diabetics, and the Overweight

Research shows that the best time to take action to reverse pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes is when you are at the stage of managing these conditions.

Vancouver, BC, Canada, 2018-Nov-06 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — November is world diabetes month. When people are diagnosed type 2 diabetic, the first line of defense is the use of prescription drugs in order to manage the diabetes. But what victims of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes are not aware of is that research performed by Just For Diabetics website founder, Ernest Quansah, shows that when patients are managing their pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes, it is the best opportunity for them to reverse it and be weaned off the prescription drugs. The research results are evidence based. Many doctors and institutions now agree that this is the case. Recently, the University of British Columbia, in conjunction with Pharmasave, a drugstore chain, began offering obese people and type 2 diabetics a diet plan aimed at reversal of pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. The cost of their plan is $500 a month. The diet plan calls for no consumption of refined sugar, potatoes, fruit, fruit juices, sweet drinks of any kind, rice, bread, and consumption of cooked vegetables for lunch, cooked chicken breast for dinner and so on. Many of the participants are seniors, the overweight, or obese. After several thousand of dollars spent, many participants lose weight and their doctors take them off their diabetes drugs.

Quansah’s program includes a specialized diabetes exercise regime along with vitamin therapy and a carefully designed tasty menu cycle. He himself completely reversed his severe case of type 2 diabetes after compiling this program, which was the culmination of thorough research. This research included the advice of several physicians. Quansah, founder of Just For Diabetics and the author of Diabetics Journey says: “For several years, I have been educating people about how type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes can be reversed through the program offered on my website. Now we see that one of Canada’s finest Universities and a drug store chain are doing the same.”

The website, justfordiabetics.com offers a free weight-loss program, a free diabetes reversal program, as well as an inexpensive paid program. The extensive program includes a full menu regime, exercise videos, tutorials, in addition to a cooking video demonstration, all for less than $180. Quansah wisely suggests that those on the program be monitored by their doctors.

Quansah’s research and findings have been published in the WebMD Diabetes magazine in the article “Secret recipe: How a Chef Cured His Type 2 Diabetes”, as well as on the WebMD website. There is hope for reversing pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes (the type that does not require insulin injections,) and for overcoming being overweight.

“Misinformation about type 2 diabetes is rampant. For diabetics to heal, they need a complete change of attitude and way of thinking. This means, they should not just accept managing their condition, but rather, understand that they can be healed. Further, complacency about pre-diabetes leads to full-blown diabetes, which can lead to heart disease, blindness, liver failure, impotence, limb amputations and early death,” cautions Quansah.

Quansah has been asked to be guest speaker at the Diabetes and Healthcare Conference being held in Helsinki, Norway, in November 2018 and to be keynote speaker at the Diabetes Care Conference being held in Malaysia in May of 2019. His speech topic will include how to help diabetics heal and resultantly reduce healthcare costs.

How Type 2 Diabetes Can Be Cured

VANCOUVER, B.C., May-31-2018 — /EPR Healthcare News/ —  The mission of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is to promote diabetes care and cure worldwide. Type 2 diabetes, once thought only to afflict African descends, other minorities, and the less educated, is now an ignored pandemic afflicting over 450 million people from diverse academic backgrounds and races, worldwide. Health Department budgets allocated for managing diabetes in developed nations each year is staggering; far exceeding the GDP of most other countries. In a new book titled Diabetic’s Journey, diabetes survivor and expert, Ernest Quansah, demystifies how type 2 diabetes can be cured.

In his book, Quansah chronicles circumstances that led him to crave and heavily indulge in sugar, one day awaking to find a sticky, whitish substance in the corners of his eyes and on his tongue. Upon reviewing Quansah’s blood tests, his doctor used these words: “Do you know the danger you have put yourself in? You are not far from going into cardiac arrest. The whitish substance is sugar build-up in your body trying to find a way out.”

Quansah’s research uncovered two lifesaving pieces of information:

  1. Type 2 diabetes is caused by consumption of refined sugar; a fact confirmed by Dr. Sanjay Basu, Ph.D., of Stanford University.
  1. Natalia McInnes of McMaster University, type 2 diabetes cure researcher, stated that type 2 diabetes can be reversed  and cured in four months.

Said Quansah, “My doctor supported Dr. McInnes’s findings when he said to me: ‘Type 2 diabetes is cured using several approaches all working together. The diabetes is cured if it does return two years after reversal.’ Reversing type 2 diabetes costs less than $200.00 per diabetic, a fraction of what is spent each year managing diabetes for the rest of one’s life. This is not taking into account the added cost of the onset of other diseases resulting from the diabetes. Best of all, the victim’s life will be saved when he or she is cured. One becomes type 2 diabetic when sugar builds up in the body and converts into fat. Some of the fat finds its way into the bloodstream. It coats red blood cells preventing them from absorbing sugar and transporting it to the muscles to be used as energy. The pancreas still works; however, the insulin it secretes is not able to transport the excess sugar. The excess sugar buildup causes heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, blindness, etc.: Diabetes simply forecasts these pending diseases. The solution is simple. To reverse type 2 diabetes, the sugar buildup in the body and the fat coating the cells must be expelled, allowing for normal cell function.”

Quansah developed:

  1. A customized weight-reducing menu cycle
  2. A customized fat and sugar burning exercise routine
  3. A vitamin/supplement regime to protect the heart

When asked about his own response to his program, Quansah said, “Within a month of applying the above factors, my energy level surged. My doctor ordered another blood glucose test. ‘Look at your test results,’ Dr. Robinson said. ‘Congratulations. You are no longer a diabetic.’ My life was saved. I told him that I must write a book to help other diabetics. He replied, ‘that’s an excellent idea.’”

Quansah’s book, Diabetic’s Journey, is endorsed by a professor of diabetology and medicine. Reviewers gave his book a rating of 8.8/10.

Proof that type 2 diabetes can be reversed: WebMD, the leading healthcare information provider to doctors and consumers, interviewed Quansah and published an article about his diabetes cure methodology in WebMD Diabetes Fall 2016 issue, page 19, and on their website. The article was titled, Secret recipe: How a Chef Cured His Type 2 Diabetes . Additionally, Clyto Access contacted him to produce a video presentation on How Type 2 Diabetes Can be Cured to be presented at the International Diabetes and Degenerative Disease conference. His paper titled, The Case Against Managing Type 2 Diabetes is posted on Academia.edu and has been viewed and downloaded by researchers worldwide.

Quansah’s book’s subtitle, How Type 2 Diabetes Can be Reversed and Cured, amplifies what doctors say. Quansah says, “The mission of the Just for Diabetics website is to promote diabetes care and cure by offering pre-diabetics and type 2 diabetics the tools to reverse and cure themselves. Proceeds provide funding to humanitarian efforts and for developing products for diabetics.”

Prof. Lucien Abenhaim: There is an incredible challenge for the sustainability of health systems across the world

Prof. Lucien Abenhaim

LONDON, Dec-3-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — On December 5-6, 2017, 200 high-level experts from government, academia, biopharmaceutical developers and patient organisations convene in London (UK) to address the mounting challenge of accessibility and patient access to high-value, high-cost medical therapies.

The not-for-profit executive forum is organised by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and analytica|LASER, a global research consultancy, to investigate topical questions around drug policy, global health systems sustainability and innovation funding through a combination of case studies, panel sessions, and roundtables. Delegations are registered from over 70 public and private organisations, including the World Health Organization, as well as health systems representatives from Belgium, England, Estonia, Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the United States and Wales. Multiple patient organisations support the meeting to ensure that the patient voice is reflected in all deliberations.

“Access to life-saving drugs is not a new challenge. The paradigm of accessibility was changed completely in the face of the deadly HIV epidemic. This time, however, accessibility concerns almost every domain of medicine such as cancer, auto-immune diseases and rare diseases. We must act now,” says Prof Peter Piot, Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and former head of UNAIDS.

“There is an incredible challenge for the sustainability of health systems across the world”, says Prof. Lucien Abenhaim, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Chairman of Analytica Laser. “It is critical that drug developers and health system engage on actionable proposals that address concerns around value, cost and overall access to innovation for the patients who need it. We are at an inflection point – the paradigms of the 1990’s can no longer guide us,” he adds.

The main plenary on December 6th features scheduled remarks by over a dozen authorities in the field, including Professor Baron Peter Piot (Director, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and former Head, UNAIDS), Dr. Olivier Brandicourt (Chief Executive Officer, Sanofi), Dr. Sarah Garner (World Health Organization), Prof. Dominique Le Guludec (President, French HAS), Sir Andrew Dillon (Chief Executive, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence UK) and Dr. Harold Paz (Chief Medical Officer, Aetna). The plenary is preceded by a scientific seminar on December 5th which gathers globally renowned academics to explore new frontiers on the methodology for the appraisal and valuation of high-value medicines.

Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT) can now more reliably detect early stages of inflammation

GERMANY, Mar-30-2017 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are the most common inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Globally, more than 4 million people suffer from recurring inflammation of the intestinal mucosa. To date, non-invasive methods have not been able to detect these forms of IBD reliably. Researchers at the University Hospital Erlangen (Germany) have now shown for the first time how Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT) can more reliably detect early stages of inflammation when compared with other non-invasive diagnostic methods. These results have recently been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Evaluating the inflammatory activity of the intestines early and accurately helps to prevent complications associated with IBD and guide an optimal therapy regime. Currently, doctors frequently rely on an invasive endoscopy procedure to assess the intestinal mucosa of patients with IBD. Additionally, non-invasive imaging methods are increasingly used in the clinic. For example, ultrasound allows clinicians to examine the structure, thickness and blood perfusion of the intestinal wall with changes in perfusion patterns indicating an onset of inflammation.

“With the MSOT procedure, we additionally use laser light, by which we can detect inflammation earlier than previously possible with ultrasound”, explains Prof. Dr. Maximilian Waldner, Professor at the University Hospital Erlangen. “The earlier we detect signs of an upcoming flare – i.e., a change in blood content – the quicker we can react and start a preventive treatment”. The MSOT technology was developed by iThera Medical in Munich, and was first used on IBD patients last year.

The researchers of the University Hospital Erlangen have recently published their results in the renowned New England Journal of Medicine. “We examined 108 patients with Crohn’s disease using the MSOT technology and compared the results to established non-invasive diagnostic procedures as well as endoscopy and histology”, says Prof. Waldner. “We were able to demonstrate that hemoglobin values in the tissue measured with MSOT indicate very accurately the inflammatory activity in the intestines. The method appears to be superior to other non-invasive procedures, as MSOT for the first time was able to detect even low levels of inflammation without having to perform endoscopy”.

Dr. Ferdinand Knieling, a physician at the University Hospital Erlangen, adds: “We are hoping that this principle can be applied to many applications and, in particular, also be used to enable safe evaluations of children and adolescents. With this new examination method, many of the currently invasive procedures might become obsolete.”

In optoacoustic imaging, the physician scans the intestines transabdominally through the skin, applying pulsed laser light in the near-infrared region. The energy of the light absorbed in tissue is converted into acoustic signals which are then acquired by an ultrasound detector. Christian Wiest, CEO of iThera Medical, comments: “MSOT is a new diagnostic imaging modality that can detect changes in tissue composition associated with a variety of diseases, without the use of contrast agents. The technology has already been applied in other clinical feasibility studies, e.g. for the detection of melanoma metastasis in sentinel lymph nodes or for the assessment of suspicious breast lesions”.

The results of the IBD study at the University Hospital Erlangen were published on March 30th 2017 in the New England Journal of Medicine (Volume 376, Issue 13, pg.1292-1294).

Aging and Genes: Nutrition is Key

Each year, millions of Americans die of preventable, often chronic disease. This happens because people believe disease is caused by things they can’t control: inherited genes or aging. Neither is true. Health experts know that about 80% of health status is determined by daily choices and gene activity, not inherited genes or age.

Most genes are active day and night. They respond to many activities, especially nutrition. Other areas play a role, including, exercise, stress, weight and inflammation. In fact, it’s normal to replace about 1 billion cells every hour, and over time, that complex process of cell division can cause mutations and errors. What’s more, those risks are markedly increased by an unhealthy lifestyle.

A new, breakthrough article called, “Telomeres Genes and Aging” explores these critical issues and includes the latest research. The article includes critical “how to” tips to prevent chronic disease and improve longevity! It’s based on more than 50 credible source links, including numerous studies and expert sources. Some key findings are:

1. Nutrition and micro-nutrient intakes (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants) are key factors for gene activation and repair, including telomere length and longevity.

2. Other lifestyle areas contribute to gene health, including weight status, sleep, stress, activity, etc., and they all contribute to gene function, replication and repair.

3. Sirtuin proteins also help to activate or silence genes, especially those for metabolism, stress response, brain function, longevity, etc. Sirtuins are also enhanced by nutrient intake and harmed by nutrient deficiencies.

There is now enough research to show how to maximize gene health and replication, including telomere length, health and longevity. By making the right choices, gene health can be maximized, including the repair of mutations and genetic errors. Humans can largely control their health and destiny today!

The End of Alzheimer’s? A revolutionary scientific advance to the cure

Interface Dynamics Control Corporation (IDCC) has completed the first phase of its decade-long Advanced Therapeutic Interventions Project, with the result that a new approach to arresting and curing Alzheimer’s disease and the other neurodegenerative diseases has been produced and verified. IDCC is now launching the Project’s second phase, which will validate the first phase findings.

Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 5.1 million Americans currently affected. The direct cost of Alzheimer’s is greater than $200 billion annually, a number expected reach between $1.2 and $1.5 trillion by 2050. Indirect costs are substantial: more than 15 million caregivers delivered some 17.5 billion hours of unpaid care valued at more than $200 billion.

IDCC has discovered the mechanism of and means to control the protein misfolding, abnormal aggregation, and degradation processes associated with the degenerative and prion diseases. That mechanism is also implicated in the failure to clear toxic intracellular proteins and in the dysfunction of apoptotic (programmed cell death) pathways. It underlies the adverse functions of the neuroglia (glial cells), including microglia, which provide immune defense to the central nervous system (CNS) and maintain homeostasis and protection for neurons in the brain and the peripheral nervous system.

The process of neurodegeneration has not been understood previously, which has precluded the production of any arresting or curative procedures or drugs. The Project’s findings, however, should lead to the realization of a new class of curative procedures and pharmaceuticals which can be engaged to defeat the disease-initiating neurodegenerative insult, thereby introducing the possibility of preventing these devastating diseases. There are direct implications for the human cancers, but verification of those implications must await further experiments.

The first major activity under the Project’s second phase will be the production of a new class of active imaging system. That system will be utilized to demonstrate the activities and accessible control points of the process pathways which, when certain abnormal events occur, trigger the incipient causal mechanisms of disease. The Project is currently developing the staff and capitalization required for execution of its second phase.

About IDCC
IDCC was founded thirteen years ago to produce definitive solutions to seemingly intractable problems of social and technological significance. It is privately held and maintains its projects and client identities in strict confidence unless and until information releases are authorized by competent authority.

20 cm Long Worm In The Human Eye, First Ever Recorded On Video

Can you believe that a 20 cm worm can house itself in the human eye? But one has to believe one’s eyes.

Here is the video clip of a 20 cm long worm being removed from a human eye through surgical procedure. It is the first time ever that such a long worm growing in the eye has been recorded. The video has evoked great interest among medical students as well as the general public.

http://www.indiavideo.org/health/loa-loa-worm-removing-surgery-8857.php

Dr. Ashley Thomas Mulamoottil, the doctor who recorded this unique surgery says that this is the seventh worm that he has removed in the last one decade and it is also the longest.

The worm Loa Loa was originally found in Africa and has now reached Asia. The mangrove fly or deer fly is believed to be the carrier of this worm. The eggs of the worm enter the human body through small wounds inflicted by the fly. The death of the worm inside the body could be fatal as it could contaminate the blood. The disease is known as microfilariasis or Loa Loa infestation (Loiasis).

The video portal www.indiavideo.org and the Indian language portal www.oneindia.in are taking the video to the world. According to Mr. M.R. Hari, Executive Editor of India Video, the process recorded by Dr. Ashley fetched 2 million views on Facebook in three days and this persuaded them to make a short movie with supporting information to make it useful. Loa Loa disease could be a major health problem in future and hence an awareness campaign is the need of the hour. ‘We take up that mission now’ says

Mr. Sriram Hebbar, CEO of One India.

In support of World Diabetes Day, Harvey Norman’s Connected Fitness team research reveals that 280 Australians develop diabetes every day

In support of World Diabetes Day (14 November), Harvey Norman’s Connected Fitness team carried out a detailed research project to uncover the extent of Australia’s type 2 diabetes problem. The worrying results indicate that an estimated 1.7 million Australians suffer from type 2 diabetes today, with up to half of these cases currently undiagnosed. Reports from The World Health Organisation indicate that the total number of diabetic Australians is expected to increase to 3.3 million by 2031, creating a healthcare timebomb for the country. An infographic to visually represent the results has been specially commissioned and can be found on the Harvey Norman website.

Diabetes can significantly impact the quality of life and life expectancy of its sufferers. Some of the potential health complications caused by the disease include kidney damage, heart disease and stroke, loss of vision, and foot ulcers leading to limb amputation. The long term impacts on the life of the sufferer, and on healthcare costs for the country, are significant. However, it is known that up to around 60% of cases of type 2 diabetescould be prevented.

Key steps that can be taken to help prevent the development of this killer disease include eating a healthy diet, cutting out tobacco, keeping alcohol consumption within sensible limits and taking regular exercise. Walking, running and cycling are all great forms of exercise that enable people to work at their own pace and can easily be carried out in the home using treadmills and exercise bikes. Harvey Norman’s Connected Fitness team are on hand to provide help and advice on suitable fitness equipment and tools that can make it easy for people to increase their levels of activity and monitor their progress.

Harvey Norman’s Daniel Hosford, says: “World Diabetes Day should be an important date in everyone’s diary. Harvey Norman understands the importance of following a healthy lifestyle in order to protect against this debilitating disease and we’d like to do our bit to support the aims of the day. Our Connected Fitness team are happy to help our customers find the right equipment to help them take part in a healthy level of exercise, and our range is also available to purchase online for those customers who don’t have a store nearby. ”

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Afflicts More Than 1 in 10 Women, causing obesity, infertility, increased miscarriage rates, adult acne, increased risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and more. September marks a campaign to increase awareness of this common, misunderstood and potentially debilitating illness.

Women suffering from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome – a complex disorder of the endocrine system affecting 11% of women, according to a report from The Adelaide University – often find themselves desperately seeking relief from their myriad symptoms. Research shows that 9 in 10 women with PCOS consulted more than one health professional prior to their diagnosis, half took more than six months to receive a confirmed diagnosis and 4 in 10 were very dissatisfied with how they were informed about their illness.

According to the Robinson Institute “little information is given about lifestyle management or complications of PCOS even though 57% of women were confident their lifestyle management will improve their condition.” Lifestyle management is also what the latest research shows is ‘the best medicine’, and is the foundation of Dr. Rebecca Harwin’s new, comprehensive book ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’.

Conquer Your PCOS Naturally – A New Book Offers A New Approach Typical treatment protocols for PCOS include a whole host of medications. From birth control pills and insulin-sensitizing medications to ovulation induction, anti-androgen medicines and topical medications, many of these conventional treatment paths can prove both ineffective and even toxic to the body.

In a desperate search for a better way, Dr. Rebecca Harwin slowly and systematically developed a cutting edge, natural approach to PCOS relief – a method she’s now compiled into an exhaustive treatment plan online and in her new book, ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’.

“I won my battle against PCOS and I did it without the invasive treatments, toxic chemicals and ineffective interventions that pharmaceutical medicine has to offer. I lost approximately 20kg, and have kept it off. My period returned, and I remember exactly where I was the first time I ovulated. I no longer suffer from acne, mood swings, hot flushes, my energy levels are balanced, and my excessive hair has reduced.”

Dr. Harwin says “I knew many other women were suffering just as I had done and I also knew there was very limited accurate information available. I realized I had a responsibility to get this powerful information into the hands, minds and hearts of other women with PCOS. My book ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’ is dedicated to helping women regain their health, boost their fertility, restore their period, lose excessive weight, and live a PCOS free life,” she said.

“Life-Changing”, “A Must Read For Anyone With PCOS”, “A Definitive Guide For Treatment”

The ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’ approach is already enjoying a steady stream of accolades and affirmations from PCOS patients and medical professionals across the globe. According to Stacy Miller of Raleigh, North Carolina, this book has been“life changing” and after feeling “lost in a sea of information” following her diagnosis a year earlier, Miller found that reading the book armed her with the information she needed to reduce her disease risk and improve her fertility. “I feel now that I have the power to control my body, instead of continuing to let my body control me,” she said. Dana Adams, a PCOS sufferer and recent convert to the natural treatment path, agreed and pointed out that ‘Conquer Your PCOS Naturally’ is the first thing she’s read on the subject that didn’t leave her feeling mystified. “One can certainly mine the internet for information, but be warned, you will be overwhelmed with an astounding amount of recommendations of supplements, medications, therapies and the like. While there are some books out there that address the issue of PCOS, Dr. Harwin [looks] at your health and wellness as a whole, giving excellent advice on nutrition, stress management, food toxicity, supplements, exercise, and the holy grail for those of us trying to conceive, fertility. [It’s] one of the best books I have read on the subject.”

Dr. Joel Fugleberg, himself a proponent of natural treatment alternatives for PCOS sufferers, called the book not only a must read for PCOS sufferers, but also for the “health care provider looking to broaden their own understanding of this condition.” And Dr. Michael Elstein of the Eternal Health Medical Center in Sydney, Australia, agreed by commenting, “I love this book’s clarity and precision. This is a book not only for the layperson suffering from this disorder but also for the professional who wants a definitive guide for treating it.” Elstein also added, “What I love about Dr. Rebecca Harwin’s book is that it is a simple easy to read journey through all the natural means of attacking what is arguably the number one metabolic and hormonal disaster that is compromising the lives of so many women.”

With September’s PCOS Awareness Month and Dr. Harwin’s tireless dedication to raising the awareness of this common, potentially debilitating, syndrome, there is hope of recovery – and a healthy life – for women afflicted with PCOS.

New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Cited for Non-Assistance to a New York Community in 9/11 Crisis

Charges of non-assistance to a New York community, post 9/11, in a context of bias and discrimination, were filed with the U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS), the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), and the New York State Division of Human Rights (NYSDHR).

According to the Verified Complaints, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) ignored repeated requests to assist in the medical and mental health care of French-American residents of New York, and of French tourists trapped by the 9/11 cataclysm.

As official coordinator for the French consular 9/11 crisis task force, Gérard Sunnen, MD, a U.S. veteran and dual national, reported that many individuals were severely distraught and maximally stressed by the 9/11 catastrophe and needed acute and chronic support services. He pointed out that French president Jacques Chirac was the first president of a foreign nation to come to New York after 9/11, offering his nation’s condolences and assistance. After his visit, he promptly dispatched French senator Monique Cerisier-ben Guiga to New York to oversee consular humanitarian actions.

“The prejudicial actions of the NYSDOH then reached new heights in the era offreedom fries” as part of a pattern and in a spirit of retribution for France’s non-participation in the Iraq conflict. Curiously, nowhere did it ever reach the intensity of New York,” reports Dr. Sunnen, “please recall the well-publicized incidents of wine bottles vindictively smashed in the streets, the eggs thrown at the façade of the Consulate of France, and the inflammatory headlines in the New York tabloids during those times. Because of coordinated boycotts, many French-owned businesses failed in New York, creating widespread mental health calamities.”

“Consequences of NYSDOH’s usage of its powers traveled far beyond New York,” said Dr. Sunnen, adding, “We were working with our Egyptian colleagues on two clinical studies, under the auspices of the University of Cairo and the Egyptian Ministry of Health. Both studies aimed at major public health issues in the Middle East and in the U.S., one regarding hepatitis C in Egypt, where the hepatitis C prevalence is by far the highest in the world, and the other on diabetic skin ulcers, a major cause of lower leg amputations worldwide. “

“Due to NYSDOH’s interference, the research contracts fell through and the studies were abandoned.” Information on the impedance to these international medical research initiatives can be found on the Internet. Legislative attempts designed to curb NYSDOH’s oft-reported undemocratic practices were all vetoed by Governor George E. Pataki in 2004.

Dr. Sunnen concluded, “In countering today’s tendency for international polarizations, friends and allies need to solidify their ties and cooperative efforts, and there may be nowhere better to start than with actively nurturing medical fellowship and goodwill.”

A Dream Team for HIV Cure Research

This Sunday will mark the 30th anniversary of the first reports of AIDS in the United States. There is still a long road ahead toward eradicating HIV, but a “dream team for HIV reservoirs cure” has been created since 2003 with this objective.

While the HIV pandemic is still growing, with more than 7,100 daily new cases of infection, there is evidence that antiretroviral therapy costs could treble over the next 20 years.

Today there are more than 30 drugs approved to treat HIV, and while they cannot cure it, they can keep the virus suppressed to undetectable levels in blood. But HIV persists dormant in some “reservoir” and each time antiretroviral therapy is stopped, the infection rekindles. Lifelong therapy is therefore mandatory but brings problems of compliance, resistance, toxicity and cost.

These reservoirs were first described in 1997 and 5 years later Alain Lafeuillade, a French Doctor involved in HIV research, considered that it would be the challenge of the 21st Century. He consequently founded a working group uniting researchers from all over the world that first met in December 2003. This first “HIV Reservoirs, Persistence and Eradication Strategies Workshop” welcomed around 130 scientists actively involved in the field. “At that time we were seen as utopists, Doctor Lafeuillade said, and quite ignored by funding agencies and pharmaceutical companies”.

But minds greatly changed in the following years and in 2009, when the “dream team” met for the 4th time, the workshop was officially supported by the NIH (National Institutes of Health) and the ANRS (French Agency for AIDS Research). In between 2 workshops, the group of scientists are in touch via a specialized website portal they also have created.

“At the end of this year we will reconvene, Doctor Lafeuillade added, and be more than 200 scientists working on HIV cure”. The program of this 5th workshop goes from in vitro models of HIV persistence to HIV eradication clinical trials. “Participants will be able to define a clear road map for HIV cure research with a precise agenda”, Doctor Lafeuillade emphasized.

New Online Resource for Insulin Dependent Diabetics

Insulin dependent diabetics now have a new online resource designed specifically for them. The resource, the LongActingInsulin.com blog, scours the web for news and views of interest to both type 1 and type 2 diabetics to provide them with a “one stop-shop” for advice, entertainment and information.

“People are busy,” says the new blog’s editor, Lynn Woods, “They don’t have time to surf the web after work to see what’s interesting or important in the world of diabetes research, so we do it for them. Some of our blog posts are entertaining, most are educational, and many contain valuable up-to-the-minute information on diabetes.”

Woods describes the new blog, which launched in January and focuses on users of long acting insulin, as “informal”. “We try to approach diabetes from a positive perspective. We believe that people can not only cope with diabetes, they can thrive with it.”

A quick look through the blog showcases its diversity: an article about diabetes-sniffing dogs that warn their owners when their blood sugar gets low, FAQs about insulin pumps, tips on giving insulin injections to your cat, a diabetic-friendly lemon cheesecake recipe, stories about celebrities with diabetes, a prescription coupon offering $10 savings on Lantus SoloSTAR long acting insulin, and a wealth of current information on diabetes research and diabetes medication.

Unexpectedly, the article Kudzu Used as Diabetes Medication in Chinese Medicine has attracted the most readers by far, says Woods. Other popular diabetes blog articles involve recent developments in non-invasive blood glucose monitors and super-long-acting insulin, and advice on giving insulin injections to cats.

Diabetes affects almost 26 million Americans, over 8% of the population. Of those 26 million, an estimated 7 million remain undiagnosed. Diabetes is an incurable and progressive disease with serious complications, and is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

New Report on Fighting Chronic Disease Examines the Importance of Non-Communicable Diseases in Global Health Care

In the first of a series of new reports, a coalition of pharmaceutical industry trade organizations outlines the serious burden that chronic diseases place on patients and global health care systems.“Fighting Chronic Disease: Importance of Non-communicable Diseases” is the first of four reports that look at this growing issue for patients and health care systems around the world.

The report was compiled by the European Federation of the Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations, the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association, and the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers Association. Together, these organizations highlight the powerful role that public-private partnerships can play in mitigating the burden of chronic disease. Non-communicable diseases like stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and cancers can often strain global health care resources, and targeting the main risk factors of these conditions can significantly reduce the burden of these diseases worldwide.

Most NCDs are preventable because they are caused by modifiable risk factors, which include poor diet, lack of physical activity and tobacco use. Every year, more than 5 million people die because of direct tobacco use and 2.8 million die from being overweight or obese. High cholesterol accounts for 2.6 million deaths and 7.5 million die because of elevated blood pressure. Individually, chronic disease lowers quality of life for those affected, causes premature deaths and negatively impacts the economic solvency of families, communities and nations. Interventions that focus on better diet, increased physical activity and access to vaccines have been proven to decrease the incidence of chronic disease and improve quality of life.

The pharmaceutical industry has long recognized the economic and social burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and has been working with governments, health care providers, patients groups and other stakeholders as an active solution partner in lessening this burden. The industry promotes and supports health prevention and promotion strategies and patient-centered approaches to managing chronic conditions and their risk factors. At the same time the global biopharmaceutical industry leads the search for new cures and the research and development of new medicines to treat or prevent non-communicable diseases. There are currently thousands of medicines either in clinical trials or awaiting approval to treat NCDs. The great challenge in preventing and controlling NCDs on a global scale is finding patient-centered solutions that reduce the burden on global health care services by promoting individual healthy lifestyles.

The R&D-based pharmaceutical industry works to improve the health and quality of life of all patients, and is committed to continuing partnerships that tackle these complex issues including extensive investment in R&D programs dedicated to the development of new NCD preventative and treatment products. Both prevention and treatment play an important role in addressing the problem of non-communicable diseases.
