Sprint Bioscience Strengthens Its Cancer Metabolism Portfolio

Sprint Bioscience, a Swedish company developing oncology therapeutics targeting cancer metabolism, announced today that it has raised money to strengthen its drug discovery portfolio.

The investment by Första Entreprenörsfonden and Almi Invest will enable the company to continue to build a pipeline of drug discovery projects within cancer metabolism.

“We are investing in Sprint Bioscience because we consider their entrepreneurial drive and their particular skills in drug development to be key success factors for the changing environment of the future pharmaceutical industry. Sprint Bioscience’s business strategy involves out-licensing or collaborating at an early stage of drug discovery to ensure that projects are developed with a focus on current and relevant market needs,” says Rune Nordlander, partner at Första Entreprenörsfonden.

Sprint Bioscience is a company founded by experienced drug hunters with an ambition to improve the drug discovery process. “We believe in small organisations with effective working procedures and collaborations throughout the sector,” says the company’s CEO and co-founder, Dr. Anders Ã…berg.

“Sprint Bioscience has developed an efficient, fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) platform that can take parallel projects from initial idea to active molecules tested in cell-based systems in a very short time” Anders Ã…berg continues. Our goal is to align the early phase in the laboratory with pharmaceutical companies’ needs.

Targeting the metabolism in tumours provides exciting opportunities to develop drug therapies with novel mechanisms of action. This could be used to overcome the resistance that many cancer cells develop to current treatments.

Still Growing: Comfort Medical Opens Retail Outlet

Comfort Medical Supply, LLC located in Ormond Beach, FL since 2005, has been ranked – despite economic pressures – has been ranked on the Inc 500 and Inc 5000 Fastest Growing Privately Held Companies in the U.S. for two years in a row and is now offering a retail outlet open to the public. The store is located in the Ormond Oaks Plaza in Ormond Beach at 619 S. Yonge St.

Comfort Medical Supply is a national supplier of home medical equipment and is accredited by the Healthcare Quality Association on Accreditation (HQAA). An approved Medicare supplier, Comfort supplies to all lower 48 states with 7 locations in the Southeast specializing in complex rehab power chairs, power mobility, drug-free pain therapy and orthotic support devices. Comfort was founded in 2005 and acquired Southeast Mobility Group, LLC in January 2007. The company has continued to grow despite the many obstacles the home medical equipment industry has endured over past years due to legislation affecting Medicare and health care.

Historically, the company ‘s revenues were derived almost exclusively from insurance coverage. However, due to reimbursement cuts in Medicare and other private insurance over the past 2 years, the company has ventured into the retail segment, where products often aren’t covered by insurance. “We recognized that to continue our growth, we had to offer additional products that are sold on a cash basis”, said Craig Daley, President & CEO. “Retail products such as home lifts, vehicle carriers, bathroom safety and daily aids to living are in high demand. When our customers receive a device that is covered by insurance, they soon discover that there a number of other items available that they also need to meet their living needs on a daily basis. Our retail segment is now available to meet those needs at competitive pricing.”

The retail store is open Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Special appointments are available by calling (386) 673-6902.

Helpful Information For People Who Suffer From Incontinence

Incontinence can be described as the uncontrolled leakage of urine or faeces, and is an extremely common problem. But help is at hand. Incontinence UK is a leading UK supplier of incontinence products, incontinence pads and incontinence pants.

You’ll find a series of helpful frequently asked questions below, designed to help you gain a greater knowledge of the incontinence products available, so that when it comes to purchasing incontinence products, incontinence pads or incontinence pants of your own, you are able to make an informed decision.

Will one type of incontinence product suit all my needs?

This is not always the case, and different incontinence products, incontinence pads and incontinence pants will offer different benefits.

Some sufferers might prefer a smaller, thinner incontinence pad or incontinence pant during the day but a larger, more absorbent incontinence pad at night when their leakage could be more severe. Alternatively, some incontinence sufferers might prefer the simplicity of exchanging incontinence pads during their daily routine, but prefer the added security of incontinence pants on special occasions or long days out.

What are the benefits of disposable incontinence pads?

Disposable incontinence pads can be thrown away after usage, meaning that hygiene and convenience are great benefits. It is very easy to carry disposable incontinence products with you and change them as and when is needed. Incontinence UK supply a large range of disposable incontinence products, pads and pants; ensuring that you can find an incontinence product to suit your needs.

What are the benefits of washable incontinence products?

Over time, washable incontinence pants prove to be more economical and environmentally friendly than disposable incontinence products. With the look and feel of normal underwear, certain incontinence sufferers prefer to wear washable incontinence pants, and they can also be easier to store. It is important, however, to ensure that you have enough washable incontinence pants to suit your needs.

‘The Economic Downturn’ Leads To £1bn Worth Of Angst

Anti-depressant and anxiety drug use has risen 26 per and cost the health service over £1billion since the start of the economic downturn in 2007, according to recent research.

A study by The Co-operative Pharmacy into antidepressant and anxiety drug dispensing across over 150 primary care trusts in England found that in 2010/11 49.8 million items were prescribed, up from 39.5 million items in 2007/08.

However, costs have fallen – down 12 percent from almost £291million in 2007/08, to£258 million in 2010/11.

In 2010/11, the North West had the highest usage of anti-depressants and anxiety medication, with over 8 million items prescribed. It was followed by East of England (5.7m) and Yorkshire and Humber (5.45m) The biggest increase in use over the last four years has been in the East Midlands up 44 percent from 3 to 4.4million items followed by the North East, up 29 percent from 2.7 to 3.5 million items.

Findings by The Co-operative Pharmacy revealed that between 2007/08 and 2010/11 the NHS has spent £1.071billion on prescribed anti-depressants and anxiety drugs. It has also funded a further £1.073billon on drugs for treating psychoses and other related disorders.

Mandeep Mudhar, NHS Business Director, The Co-operative Pharmacy, said: “Our research has shown that the NHS is getting greater value for money but worryingly prescription items have risen at an alarming rate, up 26 per cent in just four years.

“It is clear more people are seeking medical help to treat depression and anxiety. However, there are many more people who do not share their experiences. If people do feel depressed we urge them to seek medical help.”

The research found that citalopram hydrobromide was the most common anti-depressant medication (12.1million items prescribed in 2010/11) followed by amitriptyline HCl (8.8 million prescription items). 5.2 million items of fluoxetine (known commonly as Prozac) were prescribed in 2010/11.

Diazepam was the most widely prescribed drug for anxiety (1.5 million items prescribed in 2010/11).

Emer O’Neill, Chief Executive of Depression Alliance, said: “For some people depression just happens, but for others it is triggered by stressful events, for example losing a job, property or bereavement. These uncertain economic times are linked to an increase in the number of people with the illness.

“However, this is just the tip of the iceberg, as for every person diagnosed with depression there are many more who suffer in silence. Getting an early diagnosis, finding the right support mechanisms and treatment for each individual is crucial to beating the illness. At this time of year, many individuals can feel lonely or isolated but there are a range of support groups available to help with depression. Talking about your feelings is the first step to getting help whether it’s making them known to a friend or family member. It is also important to speak to a healthcare professional such as your GP or pharmacist who can help you to find the best way forward.”

Ear Plugs Help You Sleep Soundly Without The Use Of Drugs

All Ear Plugs, an online ear plug retailer, has seen an increase in popularity for sleeping earplugs. Heartech Silentear earplugs have taken the top spot, offering a noise reduction rating of 32 decibels (dB), which eliminates most sounds and allows the wearer to fall asleep peacefully.

Claire Brown, E-Commerce Manager at All Ear Plugs has said that earplugs can be just as, if not more, effective than sleeping pills. “When you suffer from sleepless nights, it’s very easy to turn to tablets in hope that they will make a difference. However, a more cost effective way of ensuring a good night’s sleep can lie in wearing earplugs. Sleeping earplugs like Mack’s Pillow Soft earplugs can eliminate surrounding noises allowing wearers to fall asleep peacefully and quickly.”

It’s easy to fall asleep in silence and that is what sleeping earplugs aim to provide, silence. Eliminating noises such as the sound of ongoing traffic or next door neighbours’ dog can create a peaceful atmosphere. Once that is removed all the thoughts of what you would like to do to the barking dog or the person blasting their horn will turn into peaceful dreams.

The amount of noise you wish to block all lies in the earplugs noise reduction rating. For instance Mack’s Ultra Safe Sound earplugs can eliminate noises up to 32dB. That is the equivalent of a loud conversation and an office environment. It may not seem much, but when you wear these earplugs the sound of city traffic can be reduced from 80 decibels to 48dB.

All Ear Plugs suggests that people should try out a pair of sleeping earplugs before reaching for drugs. Earplugs could offer you the solution you’re after at a fraction of the cost.

Please note if a lack of sleep is affecting your daily life and you feel that it’s a problem, please consult with your GP.

Med-Q Introduces Tool to Reduce Medication Errors

When Lee DeMar was running a Phoenix-based nursing agency, he constantly heard his nurses voice their frustration over the fact that many of their older clients were not taking their medications when they should and as a result cycling back to the ER (the nurses worked exclusively at hospitals). Known as medication non-compliance (or non-adherence), it is the failure to take prescription medication on time and in the dosages prescribed.

Medication non-compliance — which has been called America’s “other drug problem” by The New York Times — results in an estimated $290 billion in emergency room visits and other avoidable medical expenses and health crises. These medication errors account for 10 percent of all hospital admissions, and is attributed to at least 125,000 deaths annually, according to the New England Healthcare Institute.

DeMar immediately recognized the urgency of this growing problem and through his company, Med-Q, developed the Med-Q Pillbox, an innovative solution to the challenges of medication non-compliance. The unit retails for $49.95 and is being launched at a special introductory price of $39.95.

Featuring a unique modern design, the Med-Q Pillbox is unlike any pill organizer on the market. It is a self-contained, “all-in-one” electronic weekly organizer, reminder and dispenser. According to DeMar, “The Med-Q Pillbox features a user-friendly design and multipurpose functionality to assist a wide range of individuals taking daily medications and vitamins.”

The Med-Q Pillbox consists of 14 days’ worth of roomy, individualized compartments to accommodate once a day (for 14 days) or twice a day (for 7 days) medication regimens. Each individual compartment is specially fitted with large flip-up tabs for easy opening and can hold the equivalent of up to 30 regular-size aspirins. Additionally, each compartment can be removed from the pillbox base eliminating the potential to spill pills from other compartments that may not be closed securely. An extra large LED makes it easier to program and see the day, time and “next alert.”

Med-Q’s electronic dual reminder system, according to DeMar “is a technology and design breakthrough for individuals and families trying to adhere to daily medication regimens and live a medically-independent life.”

Powered by two AA batteries, the Med-Q Pillbox combines advanced audio and visual alarms, and may be programmed to fit any schedule. The audio alarm, available in one- or two-beep options, cascades in volume and is loud enough to be heard through a nightstand drawer. The visual alarm utilizes LED-Lightbox Technologyâ„¢ to illuminate individual compartments with a flashing light and indicates which pills to take.

The goal of the Med-Q Pillbox is to reduce medication errors. For more information or to purchase the Med-Q Pillbox, please visit www.medqpillbox.com or call 480-648-4977.

The FIRST laser of its kind in Illinois and the only laser approved by the FDA for cataract surgery, the LenSx bladeless laser arrived in August of this year at the Harlem location of the Kraff Eye Institute.

LenSx utilizes a femtosecond laser which has been used to perform Lasik surgery since its FDA approval in 2001. The Co-operative Magazine Outlines Health Services for Ramadan

The Co-operative Magazine has this week published information on the healthcare services that are available at The Co-operative Pharmacy stores during the Muslim festival of Ramadan.

The Magazine gives its readers the chance to take advantage of the knowledge, expertise and experience of pharmacists at The Co-operative Pharmacy during this important religious festival. Readers are given more information on how to participate safely in Ramadan, Hajj and Umrah, and given details of the dedicated healthcare service for Muslims across the UK.

The article states that specially trained pharmacists will be working at 84 branches of The Co-operative Pharmacy, available to give specific advice and support on all aspects of observing the practices of Ramadan, Hajj and Umrah safely.

Specialist help will include guidance on how to manage regular, orally-administered medication during the period of fasting, as well as advice on how to stop smoking and what vaccinations are necessary for those preparing for Hajj. The Co-operative understands that Ramadan is a good time to beat addiction as those observing the practices of the festival are required to abstain completely from food and resist all temptations during daylight hours.

Business development director at The Co-operative, Mandeep Mudhar, said: “We appreciate the importance of cultural understanding and sensitivity when discussing the implications of healthcare on people’s religious beliefs. But our trained pharmacists are here to help with this and with the preparations leading up to Hajj or Umrah.”

Once Ramadan is over, The Co-operative Pharmacy will focus on giving the meningococcal vaccine, as well as specialist health advice for those making the pilgrimage to Mecca. The Co-operative Pharmacy will be working with Novartis Vaccines and The Muslim Council of Britain to offer meningococcal vaccination (ACWY) packages to Muslim pilgrims.

Eye Care Practices Use Social Media To Connect With Patients

Medical Management Services Group, L.L.C. has expanded its Internet development and management consulting services through the formation of a new digital group-iMeme Digital®-to assist eye care and surgery practices to connect with patients through social media vehicles like blogs and Facebook. “We have been active in providing content and developing practice and patient education web sites for some time. The use of social media to help practices and patients stay connected on thoughts about eye care topics like LASIK and cataract surgery offers all involved a useful vehicle for engagement and sharing,” said Katherine Carlisle, Managing Member.

Members of the iMeme Digital® group have been active in the development of internet marketing strategy and implementation since 1999. This includes the development of practice web sites, development and management of LASIK and cataract surgery patient education and surgeon directory sites, direct e-mail campaign and database targeting and development, search engine optimization (SEO) and the full scope of search engine marketing for clients. After evaluating “best practices” and using our experience and resources to formulate a systematic set of solutions for practices wishing to build social media presence through creativity, thoughtfulness and integration into social media, iMeme Digital® is able to offer ophthalmology practices access to the “know how” and “management oversight” necessary to get started in a comprehensive but reasonable format.

“Given the very rapid growth of social media it will become more and more important for eye care and surgery practices to adopt this method of connectivity to patients. Even for those ophthalmology practices that feel they have a solid foundation in internet marketing, participating in social media can be overwhelming and intimidating. It can also be a time consuming, ineffective and resource wasting effort,” said Ms. Carlisle. “The need to blend Internet strategy, brand strategy, patient acquisition strategy and media strategy into a coherent action plan-AND do it in the context of a medical practice with regard to content sensitivities, privacy and security, is not trivial.”

Early adopters of the iMeme Digital® program and services include Baltimore Washington Eye Center in Glen Burnie, Maryland; D’Ambrosio Eye Care in Lancaster Massachusetts; Eyecare Medical Group in Portland, Maine; Doctor & Associates in Westport, Connecticut and Michelson Laser Vision in Birmingham, Alabama.

“We knew that we had to start building a presence for our practice in the social media like Facebook but we just kept getting stuck and didn’t seem to quite get it together,” said Philip Harrington, Practice Administrator at Baltimore Washington Eye Center. “We were pleased to have the guidance, development resources and executional support to get this going.”

“After creating the consistent brand identity across platforms we work to integrate them into a viral network and most importantly assist in the creation of ongoing digital content for ophthalmology practices-that they can be assured helps to reinforce the brand by demonstrating authority, building trust and being social,” stressed Ms. Carlisle. “We take advantage of our collective 70 years of experience in ophthalmology and couple it with media and Internet know how to assist practices in their efforts.”

“At Eyecare Medical Group we had set up a Facebook page that looked just like everyone else’s and thought we were getting somewhere. Then we watched as our pages got transformed and how it projected our brand and identity,” said Clement Berry, Chief Executive Officer of Eyecare Medical Group.

Retaine MGD will be a preservative-free oil-in-water emulsion resulting from Novagali’s patented Novasorb® technology whose efficiency and tolerance in treating dry eyesymptoms have been proven during a number of clinical trials carried out in Europe and Southeast Asia. Successfully marketed since 2008 under the brand name Cationorm®, a brand that belongs to Novagali Pharma, the product is already recommended by ophthalmologists in numerous countries throughout Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

Based on the electrostatic attraction between the positively charged Nova23041 eye drop and the negatively charged corneal epithelium of the ocular surface, Novasorb’s technological platform enables the product to be spread in an optimal, uniform and comfortable way across the entire ocular surface, improves retention time and thus reduces the number of drops required each day by MGD and dry eye sufferers due to its increased efficiency and optimal compliance and tolerance.

“Everyone at Ardeo Health is excited to see this newest technology brought to North America. Patients suffering from moderate to severe Dry Eye will now have an alternative to expensive prescription (Rx) therapies”, states Robert “Bob” Sykora, RPh, President & CEO of Ardeo Health. “With these partnerships, Ardeo has the best of both worlds—the science of Novagali coupled with the brand recognition and distribution channels of OCuSOFT”.

Cynthia Barratt, President of OCuSOFT comments, “OCuSOFT has been searching for a truly unique proprietary Dry Eye therapy which also combined a long-term partnership—and we have found that with Ardeo Health and Novagali. I believe Retaine® MGD™ will become the standard of care for those suffering with Meibomian Gland deficiencies and Evaporative Dry Eye symptoms”.

Jérôme Martinez, Chairman of Novagali Pharma, concludes: “We are very pleased to be able to announce, today, the signing of this agreement involving two major American ophthalmology players. Given their proven expertise on the North American ophthalmology market, the Ardeo and OCuSOFT teams will no doubt make Nova23041’s launch in the United States and Canada a success that will enable us to extend the distribution of our unique formulation for treating dry eye symptoms around the world. This agreement confirms the growing reputation of the products and technologies developed by Novagali Pharma in the United States.”

Cataract Awareness Month in Greater Boston at D’Ambrosio Eye Care

D’Ambrosio Eye Care wishes to announce that Prevent Blindness America has designated June as National Cataract Awareness Month.

“Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. About 20.5 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts and more than half of all Americans develop cataracts by age 80,” commented Francis A. D’Ambrosio, Jr., M.D., a Boston area eye physician and surgeon and Medical Director of D’Ambrosio Eye Care.

Many patients do not actually know that a cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye preventing light rays from passing through it easily. This results in a clouding and blurring of vision. Patients should understand that cataracts are not a growth or a film over the eye. For many patients cataracts start out slowly and have little effect on vision at first. But, as the cataract becomes denser, so does the impact on vision. The most common symptoms that bother patients with cataracts include:

• blurring of vision
• sensitivity to light and glare
• double vision in one eye
• poor night vision
• fading or yellowing of colors
• frequent changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions.

“When cataracts do begin to interfere with daily activities or with patient comfort and safety, they can be treated surgically. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most frequently performed surgeries in the United States. Today, we have a full range of Intraocular Lens Implants (IOL) available that allow us to correct near vision as well as distance vision without requiring bifocals or reading glasses for the vast majority of patients”, said Dr. D’Ambrosio, Jr.

D’Ambrosio Eye Care is a leading Massachusetts eye care practice with offices in Lancaster, Acton and Gardner, staffed by a team of Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Opticians, technical and administrative staff who provide eye examinations for adults and children, cataract surgery and Intraocular Lens Implants (IOL), laser vision correction such as LASIK, diagnosis and treatment of cornea disease including cornea transplants, management of eye inflammation, ocular inflammatory disease and uveitis and diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina including diabetes and age related macular degeneration, diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma as well as contact lenses, eyeglasses and optical services.

Francis A. D’Ambrosio, Jr., M.D. is a founding member of the LASIK Eye Surgery Patient Information and LASIK Surgeon Directory at http://www.seewithlasik.com and the Cataract Surgery, Intraocular Lens Implant (IOL) and Cataract Surgeon Directory at http://www.aboutcataractsurgery.com.

Big Mountain Pharmacy Launches a New Blog: Blogging the Drugs

One thing that has often been lacking from online Canadian pharmacies is information. Not only about the drugs on sale themselves, but also about illnesses and general news on the medical industry such as regulation and equipment.

That is what triggered Big Mountain Drugs to start their health information blog, which is now fully up and running on their website offering articles packed with information about common illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, erectile dysfunction (impotence) and acne. Not only that, they have also released articles giving useful information to help with particularly common issues. These include helping patients with poor eyesight by giving tips on how to identify medication safely, and giving family and friends of patients’ advice on how to tell the difference between dementia and depression.

Information like this is extremely valuable to patients, as they can learn more about the drugs that they are taking and the conditions that they are taking them for. The knowledge to patients increases safety as they can easily spot the symptoms of complex or potentially dangerous illnesses, and learn how to deal with the issues that come with many conditions. Blogging the Drugs from Big Mountain pharmacy, which can be found on their website, now lists many informative articles to help their customers. All of the information is free, and is written by medical professionals giving accurate and interesting information and facts.

One customer said: “Blogging the Drugs from Big Mountain pharmacy is extremely helpful and I’ve discovered a lot of new things about my illness that I didn’t know before, including information about the drugs that I am taking so that I can keep an eye out for side effects. It makes me feel much safer that I have more knowledge than I did before”.

Big Mountain Drugs commented “We wanted to add value to our customers by allowing them to make more informed decisions. Although they cannot buy most of the drugs without a prescription, it still gives them the opportunity to learn about the drugs that they are prescribed by their doctor so that they can speak with their doctor if they have any concerns. It also helps them to learn about their illnesses so that they can be aware of any issues such as symptoms of their conditions”.

One concern however, is that online Canadian pharmacies as of recent times, are no longer allowed to advertise on Google unless it is in their own country, which will mean that many people searching for information on drugs online will not be able to find the blog unless they live in Canada if they use Google to search for it.

You can join the blog on Facebook (bigmountaindrugs) and Twitter (bigmountaindrug), some of the most popular social networking sites so it is always very easy to connect and check out any new information that is issued by Big Mountain Drugs. They also post videos on Youtube and you can subscribe by RSS feed so that you get information in new articles as soon as they are posted online.

Many people with serious skin problems including psoriasis have been able to benefit from coconut oil for skin. The deep layers of skin are reached when you use coconut oil. As a result your skin starts to repair itself from the inside out. The moisture will be retained too so you can say goodbye to dry skin once and for all.

If you want smooth skin you should use coconut oil as it will help to exfoliate the damaged and dead skin cells. What remains is soft and silky with a very pretty tone and color to it. Should you be seeing fine lines and wrinkles on your body the use of coconut oil can help to make them disappear.

We do lots of damage to our hair from the wind, the sun, coloring it, and styling. Coconut oil for hair though leaves it soft and manageable. It can also help to stop the itchiness and dryness of the scalp. That can often be the result of harsh chemicals found in most shampoos. The nutrients in coconut oil will also help your hair to grow faster and to have a lovely shine to it. If anyone in your household gets lice this can also help to kill the eggs and the adults quickly.
