Maine Ophthalmologists Encourage Greater Knowledge of Glaucoma Risks

“As patients enter their 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s and beyond it is important for them to become aware of glaucoma risk factors that might be relevant to their individual situation,” commented Glaucoma Specialist Robert Daly, M.D. of Eyecare Medical Group in Portland.

“There is strong correlation between age and the likelihood of developing glaucoma. We know that your risk increases considerably after the age of 40. And if you are over 60 years of age-even if you have no other family or medical history that is significant-you are six times more likely to get glaucoma. A family history of glaucoma-especially among your brothers and sisters-can increase your risk to 4-9 times that of the average population,” noted Dr. Daly.

“Patients should take note of some recent research that suggests additional glaucoma risk factors may include long term use of oral contraceptive birth control pills, early natural menopause and obstructive sleep apnea,” shared Glaucoma Specialist Samuel Solish, M.D. “This is important for patients to know about. First, researchers reporting on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), administered by the Centers for Disease Control, indicated that woman who had used birth control pills for long periods of time were twice as likely to develop glaucoma. Further, researchers reporting in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that those women who entered natural menopause at an early age were more likely to develop glaucoma. And finally, it appears that having sleep apnea exposes patients to significant risk of glaucoma. All three of these risk factors should prompt patients to seek routine eye exams with glaucoma evaluation in order to have early detection, diagnosis and treatment is necessary. In this way we are more able to help patients prevent vision loss from glaucoma,” stressed Dr. Solish.

Eyecare Medical Group is a leading ophthalmology practice in Portland, Maine staffed by a team of eye care specialists including eye doctors who are fellowship trained glaucoma specialists, retina specialists, cornea specialists and cataract and lens implant specialists-all board certified Ophthalmologists-as well as Optometrists, Opticians, technical and administrative staff who provide eye examinations for adults and children, cataract surgery and intraocular lens implants, (IOL), laser vision correction such as LASIK, diagnosis and treatment of cornea disease including cornea transplants, care for diseases of the retina including diabetes and age related macular degeneration and diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma.

Want Vibrant Wellness? Free talk by Encinitas physician December 4th

Dr. Diana Hoppe, Encinitas Ob/Gyn physician, is giving a free talk at the Kaila Beauty Bar and Med Spa in Encinitas on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 from 5:30pm-7:30pm.

If living a vibrant life is on your to-do list, you’ll want to learn what this well-known physician has to say about your taking charge of maintaining good health. While we are living in a “toxic soup,” Dr. Hoppe, who is an integrative physician, believes that healthy aging is attainable.

Dr. Hoppe will talk about how to support the body’s ability to cleans toxins so cells can be nourished using positive thinking, exercise, healthy foods, and valuable supplements. Dr. Hoppe says, “It is my sincere desire to help individuals feel, live and perform their very best.”

A highly respected clinical researcher and popular public speaker, Dr. Hoppe earned her medical degree at the University of California, San Diego, where she also completed her internship and residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology.

Dr. Hoppe is a distinguished physician who has practiced integrative medicine in Encinitas since 1989. Among her many accomplishments, she wrote a book called “Healthy Sex Drive, Healthy You,” writes a weekly newsletter and blog, spoke on the Dr. Oz Show, and San Diego Living Show (www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1NCazPmriI (Preview)). She is hosting a seminar with four other doctors called “Vibrantly You” on Jan. 18, 2014. Her website is www.DrDianaHoppe.com

Dr. Hoppe will discuss the hormonal aspects of stress and toxins, and why they make us sick, tired and fat. Focusing on how to de-toxify and help the body to reach optimal health and weight, she will suggest the use of simple core supplementation to support and nourish our inner environment so the body can start to heal itself.

As a physician who is known for wanting to empower her clients to take responsibility for their wellness, after a great deal of investigation, Dr. Hoppe decided to work with the company called Orenda International. Dr. Hoppe found that Orenda is a highly ethical company, endorsed by other reputable doctors. In her research, Dr. Hoppe found that Orenda International uses a paradigm shift called “Awaken, Cleanse and Feed” that supports healthful aging.

Having offered herself as a “guinea pig” to try the new Orenda “Clean Burn Shape” program for effective weight loss, Dr. Hoppe found she could actually shed—without difficulty–17 pounds that she previously failed to get rid of no matter how many different programs she tried to adhere to and found to be unsuccessful. “It is so rewarding to be able to slender down and wear clothes that have been too small for a number of years—especially with the added benefit of having more energy!”

Dr. Hoppe says, “We have the honor of having George Hall, one of the co-founding brothers of Orenda International, join us for the evening.” Hall will share his insights about how to maintain optimal health and will be available to answer questions about the products and the company. Dr. Hoppe adds, “George is not only full of information and positivity—but he makes difficult information easy to understand using his keen sense of humor to keep us entertained while learning.”

The public is cordially invited to attend this 90 minute talk to learn how stress and toxins can impact health and the aging process. Question and answers will follow. Learn how Dr. Hoppe addresses the toxic overload we are all being subjected to, no matter how pure we try to be.

The Orenda website is available for perusal. For those interested in learning about the products or the “People Lifting People” philosophy of the Orenda International company, see “Addressing the Host” and other videos at www.ThisIsOrenda.com/DrDianaHoppe

This talk is free and the general public is welcome. Minion Mayhem at Scrivens Opticians

Scrivens Opticians has teamed up with the stars of the Despicable Me 2 film, the mischievous Minions – famous for their goggle specs – to encourage parents to take their children for regular eye tests.

To celebrate the release of the hilarious animated adventure on DVD and Blu-ray (25th November), youngsters who take the Minion approved eye test at their local Scrivens branch will receive a special certificate and, if they need glasses, can choose from a range officially approved by the goggle-wearing characters.

The new campaign has been launched after figures from the Health & Social Care Information Centre* showed eye examination rates among under 15s had fallen to a 10 year low. If unchecked, poor eyesight can affect children’s education as well as their overall development, so the Minions have been enlisted to help raise awareness of the importance of regular check-ups.

Scrivens Opticians optometrist Paul Sidhu said: “We’re very excited to be working with the mischievous little Minions from Despicable Me 2, who are favourites with all the family. We want to create an adventure in store which children will remember and take away with them. Ultimately, we’re encouraging kids and parents alike to have an enjoyable experience that will inspire them to return and have regular eye checks, to help keep their eyes healthy for life.”

The initiative runs until Christmas and to encourage the whole family to look after their eyesight, any parent who brings their child for a Minion approved test will receive 50% off their own standard eye test.

By booking a Minion approved eye test customers can enter a prize draw to win a UK family adventure break** where the kids will train to be secret agents like Gru and Lucy in Despicable Me 2, or a copy of the film on 3D Blu-rayâ„¢.

Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care was established 75 years ago and remains a family run business today with 146 high street branches nationwide. For more information, visitwww.scrivensopticians.com

BlueFire Marketing Announces Launch of New Healthcare Reminder Service

BlueFire Marketing, a fully integrated marketing firm, announced today the launch of a text message marketing reminder service for healthcare providers. This service allows them to automatically remind patients of upcoming appointments. This reduces time and cost for healthcare providers who manually and individually call patients to remind them of their appointments.

BlueFire Marketing recognizes changing trends in both the market and in consumer preferences. In the U.S., smartphone penetration has reached 54%, and is projected to hit 84% by 2016. This creates an opportunity to reach individuals and build 1-on-1 relationships at an incredibly low cost.

Healthcare Outcomes Solutions Launches Patient Centered Enhanced Care Model to Reduce Healthcare Costs for Chronically Ill Patients of Self insured companies and improve their care

Healthcare Outcomes Solutions (HOS), a company dedicated to reducing health care costs for self insured companies and their employees, recently launched its Patient Centered Enhanced Care model (PCEC). PCEC is a care coordination model designed to improve health care and reduce costs specifically for employee-patients, or their family members, with multiple chronic illnesses who are in a health plan offered by self-funded companies.

It is now common knowledge that approximately 5% of members of health plans account for about 50% of the cost. Multiple chronic diseases are the source of the majority of the cost in healthcare. The PCEC model enables self-funded businesses across the U.S. to offer coordinated care specifically for these member-patients. This service is offered to middle size or larger employers.

The PCEC model has been developed by healthcare experts and is grounded in extensive research of evidence-based and outcomes studies, many of which are available on the HOS website, www.healthcareoutcomes.net. The latest data on healthcare costs show that care coordination of the most chronically ill member-patients can reduce a company’s healthcare costs significantly.

We will work with companies to determine if the PCEC model is right for them. Affiliated healthcare accountants will examine a company’s current health care expenses, and HOS will determine the feasibility of reducing cost while improving care.

Breast Enlargement UK YouTube Video Nears 60,000 Views in Under 6 Months

Aurora Clinics Released their Breast Enlargement UK & Breast Enlargement London and Birmingham Video on YouTube in December 2012 and it is Already Nearing 60,000 Views. Almost 30,000 people have seen snapshots of Aurora Clinics’ Buckinghamshire clinic and have heard all about their breast enlargement UK procedure’s 3 point plan from the Surgical Director, Adrian Richards.

As the video explains, every patient who comes through their doors for breast enlargement surgery is entitled to as many free consultation appointments as necessary. This forms the first point of their three point plan, “We have developed a network of the best and most experienced surgeons throughout the UK” explains Aurora’s spokesperson. This means that all of their potential patients, new patients and current patients have access to a specialist surgeon in a location that’s convenient for them. “In their very first appointment, the patient will meet the surgeon who will ultimately carry out their procedure.” says the spokesperson. “This allows the patient to ask all the questions that they want to and make sure they are certain that they want to proceed with surgery.”

At one of their free consultation appointments, patients will undergo a ‘sizing appointment’. “This is second step of our plan. In this sizing appointment, we invite breast enlargement UK patients to bring in different items of their clothing. Their surgeon will then try a variety of shapes, sizes and makes of implant to identify the best way forward. This lets the patient get a realistic idea of how they will look after their procedure and make sure that the end result will be as they imagined.” explains their spokesperson.

Aurora Clinics’ comprehensive After Care Policy completes their three point plan. Their After Care Policy includes a 24 hour hotline that all patients are given access to and encouraged to use. Their spokesperson adds, “We also invite our patients back to their local clinic for free annual appointments so their surgeon can check and make sure that they’re fully healed and everything is as it should be post surgery.”

Many patients first come to Aurora with a clear goal of what they want to achieve in their mind. Aurora’s expert surgeons are then able to advise patients on the most appropriate treatment or procedure to achieve their ideal outcome. “During their consultation appointments, our surgeons will discuss with their patient all of the treatment options in full. We offer a number of breast surgeries; breast uplift, breast reduction inverted nipple correction, and of course breast enlargement UK. Our highly skilled surgeons will advise our patients which procedure would be the most appropriate for them and what will achieve their desired results.” says the Aurora spokesperson.

Aurora Clinics now have an extensive video library within their YouTube channel, ClinicsAurora. With 525 videos in their channel, Aurora hopes that they can help people by answering the most frequently asked questions about breast surgeries so they can make an informed decision about taking the first step.

20 cm Long Worm In The Human Eye, First Ever Recorded On Video

Can you believe that a 20 cm worm can house itself in the human eye? But one has to believe one’s eyes.

Here is the video clip of a 20 cm long worm being removed from a human eye through surgical procedure. It is the first time ever that such a long worm growing in the eye has been recorded. The video has evoked great interest among medical students as well as the general public.

http://www.indiavideo.org/health/loa-loa-worm-removing-surgery-8857.php

Dr. Ashley Thomas Mulamoottil, the doctor who recorded this unique surgery says that this is the seventh worm that he has removed in the last one decade and it is also the longest.

The worm Loa Loa was originally found in Africa and has now reached Asia. The mangrove fly or deer fly is believed to be the carrier of this worm. The eggs of the worm enter the human body through small wounds inflicted by the fly. The death of the worm inside the body could be fatal as it could contaminate the blood. The disease is known as microfilariasis or Loa Loa infestation (Loiasis).

The video portal www.indiavideo.org and the Indian language portal www.oneindia.in are taking the video to the world. According to Mr. M.R. Hari, Executive Editor of India Video, the process recorded by Dr. Ashley fetched 2 million views on Facebook in three days and this persuaded them to make a short movie with supporting information to make it useful. Loa Loa disease could be a major health problem in future and hence an awareness campaign is the need of the hour. ‘We take up that mission now’ says

Mr. Sriram Hebbar, CEO of One India.

Leading Veterinary Group with over 70 Vets in London Releases New YouTube Video

The Goddard Veterinary Group consists of over 70 vets in London, three dedicated veterinary hospitals and a wealth of other services to provide dedicated care for clients and their pets. Their new YouTube video showcases their practice and friendly staff. Regional Manager and Head Vet, Jeremy Stewart explains, “Here at the Goddard Veterinary Group, we’re very lucky. That enables us to have the financial ability to reinvest and that is investing in the hospitals, in the branches, in the staff that we employ, enabling us to provide the best level of clinical care that we can for our patients.”

What started as a family run business in 1952 has expanded and grown over the years. The practice is still privately owned and is managed and staffed by a caring, hard-working and dedicated team. Julie Driscoll, the Head Receptionist at one of their practices says, “I like the fact that it’s a small family run business that although it’s grown as a whole, it still retains that individual feel.”

Their YouTube video showcases their Wanstead Veterinary Hospital, which was the first of three hospitals to be established by the Goddard Veterinary Group. Each hospital supports their local veterinary surgeries and they are open all year round, 24 hours a day. Jeremy Robinson, the Goddard Veterinary Group’s General Manager says, “Each surgery is fully equipped with surgical facilities and offers a personal, friendly yet professional service. Our network of branches is fully supported by our veterinary hospitals. These offer specialist referrals, as well as being open 24 hours a day.”

They offer referrals in neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology and diagnostic imagining. Each of their referral disciplines have an RCVS or European Recognised Specialist. Tom Flynn, the Clinical Director says, “We have several Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons specialists and diplomats in a wide variety of disciplines and that gives us the ability to offer the highest level of expertise.” Goddard Veterinary Group also benefits from a veterinary physiotherapist, who is based at Stone Lion Hospital.

EMS Healthcare’s recent work supporting better healthcare, closer to home

The prospect for major investment in new healthcare estates looks slim as the strategy to bring care closer to people’s homes becomes reality. Keith Austin, managing partner at EMS-Healthcare has looked at how the switch to community care is raising standards nationwide:

“Private Finance 2, which sets out a new approach to financing the building and maintenance of public infrastructure, will be used to build the next generation of hospitals. But despite its announcement at the end of last year there has been little movement to invest in new healthcare estates.

“The delay isn’t just about money or red tape; there is the wider strategy to consider of moving away from care delivered in hospitals to providing care closer to people’s homes.”

Keith continued, with how EMS Healthcare in particular helps address the costs involved with this kind of shift in patient care: “The scale of investment necessary to meet this ideal is much smaller than that required for developing new large scale hospital sites. But this isn’t the only benefit. We have been working with numerous private and public sector organisations to facilitate care in the community via medical trailer solutions and have been inspired by what has been delivered and the warm reception from patients and staff alike… To say the benefits can be life changing is not an overstatement.”

One stand out project for EMS Healthcare has been to fit out and supply Clatterbridge Cancer Centre with a state-of-the-art mobile chemotherapy facility. Since the beginning of the year the medical trailer has been improving patient care by making treatment as accessible and easy as possible, serving around 25 people daily from the Chester area in a Tesco car park.

“Perhaps an unlikely site for life-saving treatment, but the feedback from patients has been overwhelmingly positive. The bespoke medical trailer houses six chemotherapy stations with preparation, reception and waiting areas. Patients feel a real sense of community and ownership while attending the clinic and the environment has been described as ‘warm and cosy’ with a ‘more jovial atmosphere’.”

Other initiatives that EMS Healthcare have been involved in include a medical trailer eye clinic which helped medical consultants save the sight of thousands of patients across the East Coast of the UK, while saving them a trip of up to 84 miles for treatment. A temporary renal dialysis medical trailer unit has also saved patients in North Wales hours of travel every week, helping to improve their quality of life.

Thousands of patients across the UK are making long journeys to receive specialist treatment. These unique facilities provide a solution to help reduce the cost, burden and strain of travelling while delivering first class care. Waiting time is minimal too, making the experience less tiring, and a more familiar location helps put patients at ease.

The evidence is clear on why healthcare providers are taking their care closer to people’s homes. This patient-centric approach is set to continue and Keith – and EMS Healthcare – are proud to be part of it.

Heavenly Spa Set to Follow Up the Success of their ‘Colonic Irrigation’ YouTube Video with a New Video Promoting their London Spa

Having already found success with their ‘Colonic Irrigation London & Colonic Irrigation Information’ YouTube Video, Heavenly Spa are Soon to Launch a New Video Showing the Many Other Treatments that their Central London Spa Offers.

Nine months after their colonic irrigation video’s release on YouTube and over 8,000 views later, Heavenly Spa are in the later stages of production for a new video that showcases their spa and the many treatments that they offer. Their idyllic spa is located just a short two minute walk from Paddington Underground Station in London, tucked away in a quiet, discreet mews.

“We offer our clients the ultimate in relaxation and rejuvenation.” says Heavenly Spa owner Marlin Armstrong. “We are in such a great location what with Paddington being just two minutes away, but the lovely mews that we’re in allows our clients to be transported away from the hustle and bustle of London and into our calming retreat – we even have a dedicated relaxation room to allow our clients to unwind before and after their treatments.”

The spa and its fully trained beauty therapists are the leaders in colonic irrigation. “The spa is built on the ethos of “beauty starts from within” and our colonic treatment promotes complete well-being from the inside out” explains Marlin. Their treatment comes recommended by Elle Magazine who said their colonic hydrotherapy treatment was “A whole lot easier than previous experiences.”

Priding themselves on providing the client with the most discreet, unobtrusive and comfortable colonic irrigation possible, Heavenly Spa uses the most advanced and medically approved colonics system. “Once clients understand the process, they are able to relax and enjoy their colonic.” says Marlin.

Colonic hydrotherapy works by using warm, filtered water to loosen faecal matter and stimulate its release. “This process allows the bowel to hydrate, cleanse, detoxify and tone internally.” explains Marlin. “A colonic irrigation can result in reduced bloating and a stronger immune system. It can also be highly beneficial for those suffering with constipation and irritable bowel syndrome – though we do recommend a course of treatment if this is case.”

Their clients can either opt for a one off treatment, a course of treatments or colonic irrigation can form part of a bespoke well-being package, specifically designed to achieve clear, long lasting results for the client.

Heavenly Spa has many relaxation therapies and facilities, such as an exercise pool and gym, an infra red deep-heat absorption sauna and massage treatments. “Upon speaking with our clients and gauging what results they want, we can design a tailor-made treatment plan to get them to their goal and achieve long lasting results.” says Marlin.

With a new online video in the pipeline, Marlin hopes that viewers will be able to get a sense of their blissful spa. “Heavenly Spa is specially designed to amplify natural daylight and it is filled with purified air. Our colonic irrigation video does show our spa and its natural architecture and relaxing vibe. It has been such a success so we wanted to release another video that goes into more depth about the other treatments and therapies we offer here.”

“Heart Within a Heart” – Surgery Cures 12 Year Old With Rare Congenital Heart Disease

A 12 year old Indian boy successfully underwent open heart surgery for an extremely rare variant of Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC) at Sri Muthukumaran Medical College and Research Institute, Mangadu, Chennai.

Prabhakaran, a ‘blue baby’ born with a heart birth defect seen in only 1 out of every 500,000 births, had 2 “hearts” inside his chest, one within the other. This complexcongenital heart disease is so rare that it merited selection out of 430+ submissions to be presented at the recently concluded international conference of the Indian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (IACTS) at Mumbai in February 2013.

In an intricate open heart operation that lasted 5 hours, the cardiothoracic surgical team including Dr.S.Sivasubramanian, Dr.S.Visvakumar and Dr.Meenakshisundaram successfully repaired the defect.

Unable to afford the high cost of treatment, Prabhakaran’s widowed mother searched desperately for assistance with her son’s surgery. His operation was sponsored by theDr.Mani Children Heart Foundation, a Chennai-based NGO which has funded 100 heart surgeries for under-privileged children with congenital heart disease since its inception in 2003.

In the defect, a rare intracardiac sub-type of TAPVC, all 4 veins returning oxygen-rich blood from the lungs drained into a common chamber (the “pulmonary confluence”) – forming a mini-heart behind the regular heart.

This mini-heart then pumped blood into the atrium through a hole in the heart called an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), making him a cyanotic ‘blue baby’. Prabhakaran’s surgery was carried out on 16th October 2012. A week later he was discharged from hospital, his lips and fingernails now pink and healthy.

The department of cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology at Sri Muthukumaran Medical College and Research Institute, Mangadu, Chennai has successfully carried out more than 75 operations on patients with valve, coronary and congenital heart diseases in the short period since its inception.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is rare, with an estimated incidence of 7 to 8 in 1,000 live births. Surgery is often risky and expensive, yet serious complications can arise if treatment is delayed.

Stretch Physio Launches New Online Yoga Photo Competition

The Chelmsford-based physiotherapy clinic has launched a brand new social media competition in conjunction with sister company The Hummingbird Centre.

The competition was inspired by a photo the team received via Twitter from Alison Fuller, who captured her foreign adventures on camera by striking a lotus pose while taking a break on the Bolivian Salt Flats in Uyuni. This beautifully striking picture captured the imagination of the owners of Stretch Physio and neighbour The Hummingbird Centre. The team is now asking for more travellers to get in touch with photos of themselves doing yoga or Pilates around the world.

The owner of each photo received will then be put into the draw to win an amazing prize with the company’s Directors. The prize includes a physiotherapy session with Ellie Searle, specialist physiotherapist and Director of Stretch and The Hummingbird Centre, a one-to-one Pilates session with Kellie Jones, Director of The Hummingbird Centre, experienced Pilates teacher and general Pilates and yoga guru, and an en vogue hot yoga class, which will be coming soon to the Centre.

Facebook fans have responded well to the launch of the competition and the team at Stretch and The Hummingbird Centre have received some stunning entries to date.

The two centres decided to launch a joint competition to better promote the wide range of classes and treatments offered at The Hummingbird Centre.

“Naturally, we wanted to use the contest to raise awareness of our business in the local area, but we also wanted to get our online audience more involved in what we do by incentivising them to share their imagery and experiences,” says Ellie Searle.

“Myself and my business partner Kellie both believe that a picture speaks a thousand words. We think that these beautiful photos encapsulate the soothing and calming effects that regular yoga or Pilates can have on an individual. We hope these images will inspire many of our followers to give yoga or Pilates a try at the Centre in order to fully understand why so many people consider these practices to be such an integral part of their overall health and wellbeing.”

Those interested in entering the contest are encouraged to visit The Hummingbird Centre’s Facebook page for entry details. The winner will be announced on 5th January 2014, but participants are encouraged to refer back to the company’s social media profiles for updates, special offers and future competitions.

The Risks Of Regular Alcohol Consumption

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) show that within the United States, excess alcohol use is the third leading cause of death from lifestyle-related factors, accounting for over 2 million deaths annually.

“Current recommendations for alcohol consumption form the CDC are no more than 1 drink daily for women and 2 drinks daily for men” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center . “Some immediate effects of excessive alcohol consumption are obvious, such as unintentional injury, domestic abuse and risky sexual behaviors, among others. Other effects from excessive alcohol consumption develop over the long-term, such as neurological problems, social problems, various cancers and irreversible liver disease. The good news is that all of these alcohol-related problems are preventable simply by eliminating alcohol from one’s daily diet. Naturally, that can be easier said than done for some individuals – that’s why a comprehensive residential addiction treatment program may be best for some.”

New study grant seeks understanding of genetics and alcoholism correlation

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded a grant for research into the correlation between genetics, environment and alcoholism.

Researcher Tatiyana Apanasovich hopes to find evidence that supports her theory that hypothesizes that 40% to 60% of alcohol dependence is caused by genetic factors as well as environmental factors. She bases her hypothesis on recent discoveries regarding the correlation of overeating and addiction.

“We congratulate Ms. Apanasovich on receiving this grant to study alcoholism,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “We look forward to seeing her findings and hope that it will provide new information that will help in addiction treatment for individuals.”

Early Detection & Eye Exams Needed to Prevent Macular Degeneration Vision Loss

“As Prevent Blindness America has designated February as National Age Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month, on behalf of the eye doctors at D’Ambrosio Eye Care we want to stress the need for regular eye exams to ensure early detection of macular degeneration as the key to preventing vision loss,” shared Massachusetts Ophthalmologist Francis D’Ambrosio Jr., M.D. “Patients-especially those 50 and over-need to know that age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in Americans older than 50,” explained Dr. D’Ambrosio Jr. “While it is not possible to actually cure AMD, our clinical experience demonstrates that with early detection, diagnosis and treatment when necessary we can be quite effective in helping patients prevent vision loss and in many instances we can help recover some lost vision.”

It is advisable for everyone older than 50 to have a comprehensive, dilated eye examination every one to two years to ensure that AMD is detected as early as possible. If anyone in your family has macular degeneration it is critical to be seen even earlier and more often. “We want to be as certain as possible that if you are at risk for macular degeneration or show any signs of “Wet” AMD such as the growth of unwanted blood vessels under the retina-we make sure you have access to treatment with Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) inhibitor injections such as Lucentis® as soon as possible. By learning the symptoms to watch for, bringing to our attention and getting treatment as quickly as possible we can stop the blood vessel growth, reverse it and at a minimum prevent further vision loss and often actually improve vision,” explained Dr. D’Ambrosio Jr.

Patients can also help to decrease their risk of developing age related macular degeneration (AMD) by not smoking, moderating alcohol consumption to less than 15g per day, eating a heart-healthy diet rich in fish, fruit and green leafy vegetables, avoiding foods with trans fats, exercising and controlling blood pressure and weight.

D’Ambrosio Eye Care is a leading practice serving the greater Boston and central Massachusetts area including Acton, Athol, Berlin, Bolton, Boylston, Boxborough, Chelmsford, Clinton, Concord, Fitchburg, Gardner, Greenfield, Groton, Harvard, Hudson, Lancaster, Leominster, Lexington, Littleton, Lowell, Lunenburg, Marlborough, Milford, Shelburne Falls, Shirley, Sterling, Stow, Sudbury, Templeton, Westminster, Westborough, Winchendon and Worcester, Massachusetts.

Gift Vouchers Now Available From The Hummingbird Centre In Essex

The Essex-based Yoga and Pilates centre is kick-starting the New Year by promoting its in-house gift vouchers, which can also be redeemed with its in house physiotherapy and massage clinic, Stretch Physiotherapy.

The gift vouchers now available from The Hummingbird Centre make a great New Year pick-me-up for that special someone. As the company itself states in its most recent newsletter, January is the ideal time of year to ‘give some goodwill to yourselves’, especially after such a hectic Christmas period. Let the team help you to feel better this New Year and work with you to achieve your health and fitness goals.

The vouchers make an excellent gift as they can be redeemed against yoga and Pilates classes at The Hummingbird Centre. The Centre also offers one-to-one Pilates sessions with the company’s founders Ellie Searle and Kellie Jones. Ellie offers specialist skills as both a Physiotherapist and Pilates instructor and can therefore tailor a programme for those who are recovering from illness or injury, as well as those looking to improve their sporting performance with a bespoke Pilates exercise programme. Kellie is an experienced Pilates teacher, with her wealth of experience and extensive repertoire of exercises, she often uses the reformer and other Pilates equipment to help her clients get into their best possible shape.

Lucky recipients can also use their vouchers against physiotherapy or massage treatment at the Stretch clinic. Stretch has a team of specialist physiotherapists and massage therapists, with a wide range of experience and hands on skills, so whatever your problem, the team should be able to help.

Purchase a voucher and book a holistic massage with one of the company’s trained and experienced massage therapists. Those looking for a rejuvenating treatment may be inclined to try out a Swedish tissue massage, which releases chronic muscle tension, while those who train regularly may prefer to organise an appointment with resident sports massage specialist Mark Laybourn, who has been working in the field for over ten years, helping people to recover from sports injuries or to prepare for a competition.

Ellie Searle, founder of Stretch Physiotherapy, explains why she and the rest of the team at The Hummingbird Centre expect to see a reasonable increase in bookings now that the Christmas season is well and truly over.

“At this time of year most of us are in desperate need of some ‘me’ time after a busy Christmas and New Year period. “This is traditionally the time of year when we receive a lot of enquiries from people who have decided that this year they are going to take some time out to look after themselves either to deal with a specific injury or to get in shape.”

Unconstitutional Retaliation by Health Agency (NYSDOH) Cost Taxpayers $25 Million

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) agreed to pay the owners of the Beechwood Nursing Home, located in Rochester, New York, $25 Million dollars to settle litigation in which a federal jury had already determined that NYSDOH officials, in a context of malfeasant comportment, had illegally revoked the operating license of the facility in 1999 in retaliation against its owners, resulting in Beechwood’s closure. The jury was scheduled to decide how much to award in damages when the parties reached a settlement.

The NYSDOH, known for disregarding Fourteenth Amendment rights (such as the right to have witnesses for one’s defense) in its actions against the state’s health professionals, has been challenged to conform to proper judicial practices, most notably via bills introduced by the New York State Legislature. All bills were vetoed by Governor George E. Pataki in 2004. According to Dr. Gérard Sunnen, a New York psychiatrist with long experience caring for patients in city hospitals and nursing homes, “the closure of the Home undoubtedly tore apart the social fabric and the connective support sustaining its tenants and patients, likely resulting in serious stress reactions, with all attendant consequences, physical and psychological.”

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle filed this report on the unconstitutional retaliation settlement. According to its August 22, 2012 article, the presentation of provocative e-mails, written by NYSDOH officials in the wake of Beechwood’s closure, was a key point in the case. Jurors in the case “pointed to the e-mails as the proof they needed of the state’s malice.” Although Beechwood’s owners sued multiple NYSDOH officials at the outset of the litigation in 2002, five were eventually found liable for the illegal revocation of the operating license: current Health Department officials Susan Baker and Cynthia Francis, and former officials Laura Leeds, Sanford Rubin, and Sharon Carlo. These individuals will not be personally liable for the $25 Million settlement.

New York State taxpayers, however, are the ones to shoulder the burden of the full award.
