New York’s Health Agency (NYSDOH) Cited in Iraq War’s Blowback

New York, NY, 2016-Dec-31 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — As the Iraq War’s official end on December 18, 2011 marks its fifth anniversary, many questions remain on its fallouts. New York’s French-American community is one of them, as it remembers its blacklisting when France opted out of attacking Iraq.

Choosing diplomatic pressure rather than “shock and awe” ignited fury for many in New York. The call for anti-French boycotts resonated in tabloids as pictures of New Yorkers spilling wines in gutters vied with accusations of an ally’s betrayal and cowardice. Information can be found by googling “New York’s French boycotts and Iraq,” and “Freedom fries.”

How effective were the boycotts? “Very much so, even devastating,” says French consulate’s official physician and mental health coordinator at the time, Gérard Sunnen, MD, “the French-American community of New York was stunned by their virulence. Why, many wondered, did they materialize only in New York, in striking contrast to the rest of the country?”

“Targeted were all manner of French-American businesses, from Air France to bakeries, as rosters of marked companies circulated widely. Earliest felled were restaurants, whose sales plummeted by as much as half. Like dominoes, they closed their doors, dismissing their workers. Called by many the “consulate’s darkest hour,” it went on for weeks, interminable months, and still resonates today.”

“As layoffs mounted,” Dr. Sunnen added, “so did their mental health consequences, from all manner of stress reactions to self-destructive depressions. And workers suddenly out of work could not find employment because no one would take them. The consulate’s social services department work load soared to levels never attained before.”

Faced with this onslaught, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) was repeatedly contacted to lend the community its medical and mental health assistance. In addition, New York state and city top officials were insistently asked to add their voice to call off the boycotts. All appeals remained unanswered and, for reasons of non-assistance and abandonment of responsibility, this matter was eventually reported and filed in New York and Federal courts.

Dr. Sunnen, who also cites his experience as a Vietnam-era U.S. veteran, concludes, “history needs constant reckoning, otherwise it can remain a fable. These events are now brought to light so that long-term allies can better understand the meaning of their relationship.”

Systech will be part of Sharp’s panel discussion addressing delegates on the theme of “Serialization: Optimizing Your Supply Chain Means Optimizing Your Partners.” The presentation will explore the critical path to supply chain readiness, risk assessment, benchmarking and serialization risk mitigation options. The briefing will take place in the Pharma Insight Briefing room on Tuesday, 4 October 2016 at 11:30am CEST.

Systech will also showcase its UniSeries™ serialization software offered as an integrated solution within Autajon’s exhibit booth #2P16 (Hall 2).

CPhI Worldwide, together with co-located events ICSE, InnoPack, P-MEC and FDF, will host more than 36,000 visiting pharma professionals from 4-6 October at the Fira Gran Via, Barcelona, Spain. More than 2,500 exhibitors from 150+ countries gather at the event to network and take advantage of more than 100 free industry seminars. Every sector of the pharmaceutical market is represented under one roof, this year in a new location in Barcelona.

With thousands of implementations across the globe, Systech is the world’s most trusted brand protection expert, and its UniSeries offering is the industry standard for serializing products. UniSeries is offered as an integrated solution with both Sharp Packaging and Autajon Group’s hardware. Systech’s patented, configurable software offers manufacturers the flexibility to adapt to new regulations without extensive reworking or revalidation, thereby reducing implementation, training and support costs.

“We are recognized as the world leader in serialization and brand protection,” states Manfred Voglmaier, Senior Director Sales Europe, Systech International. “With more than 30 years of experience in providing highly configurable solutions for serialization across a variety of industries ― along with our partners Sharp Packaging and Sinel ― gives us a unique insight for this panel.”

Systech’s products are in greater demand than ever before since it is estimated that over 15,000 production lines for prescription medication in Europe must be fitted with a serialization system over the next three years. The European Commission adopted a regulation on October 2, 2015, under which the serialization of prescription medicine packages will become mandatory in all EU countries by 2019.

Show exhibit hours are on Tuesday, 4 October – Thursday, 6 October. Systech representatives will be available in the Sharp Packaging booth #3L56 (Hall 3) during the event, as well as in the Autajon booth #2P16 (Hall 2). Sway Medical’s app for sports concussion exam received European CE Mark as Medical Device

sway-concussiontest-is-a-validated-ios-app-based-concussion-management-system

TULSA, OK, 08-Sep-2016 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — Sway Medical is a US medical device company who’s software turns an iPhone or iPad into a mobile medical device that provides immediate medical grade, objective concussion measurement to medical professionals.

Sway Medical LLC (Sway) would like to announce its official availability in all European Union Countries. Sway was issued its CE Mark after being marketed in the United States and Canada for two years. This is significant because European sports organizations ranging from youth through pro level now have an affordable and convenient sideline assessment tool supporting concussion related medical decision making. Medical professionals and trained coaches can obtain a concussion assessment via an Apple mobile device (iPhone or iPad) and the Sway Balanceâ„¢ System web-portal. Acute objective measurements are obtained by performing a 1.5 minute balance and reaction time test protocol. Licensed athletic trainers, physical therapists and athletic therapists are able to join physicians in acutely managing the underserved market of youth sports, ages six and older.

Concussion injuries are very common in sports, often going un-reported or ignored until the obvious symptoms have incapacitated the athlete or draws the attention of a parent or coach. Second Impact Syndrome (SIS) is a serious medical condition with published mortality rates of up to 50%. SIS occurs when an athlete returns to play while still recovering from an initial concussion injury. During this time, the brain is highly susceptible to additional injury and complications. The Sway Balance™ System is able to accurately assess and track the acute and chronic outcome related to an athlete’s balance, motion reaction time and concussion symptoms. The Sway Balance™ System provides a graphical representation comparing suspicious injury event tests against a pre-injury “normative” or baseline score. The comparison of event tests against an established baseline is a common measurement for traumatic brain injury diagnosis and recovery tracking.

The Sway Balance™ System is available for purchase by licensed medical professionals involved in school, occupational or sports medicine through www.swaymedical.com. Additional protocols are available to assess an individual’s “Fall Risk” or “Functional Status”.

This one-of-a-kind workout is broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training in which certified trainers instruct the class using a variety of equipment including treadmills, rowing machines, SBT suspension trainingâ„¢ and free weights. With constant variation in workouts and motivation from our inspiring trainers, participants complete the class feeling energized and accomplished.

Orangetheory Fitness has been featured in The New York Times as an effective new plateau-busting workout in which participants can burn up to 900 calories in a 60-minute session. Backed by the science of post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), our heart-rate monitored training (OTBeat) is designed to help participants keep heart rates in a target “orange zone” that stimulates metabolism and increases energy in order to achieve noticeable, lasting results.

OTBeat is a heart rate monitoring program specifically designed for group training. Each participant wears a transmitter pod that displays their heart rate and percentage of max on a large monitor in the studio. Clients will know exactly what their heart rate is throughout the workout by simply glancing at the monitor. After each workout, participants are able to break down the results of their workout and visualize their progress.

The result is the Orange Effect – more energy, visible toning and extra calorie burn for up to 36 hours after your workout.

ViroCarb’s anti HIV Crowd Funding Campaign

Toronto, Canada, December 01, 2014 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — ViroCarb Inc. has launched a worldwide crowd funding campaign to promote the development of its new HIV infection inhibitor.

WORLD AIDS DAY – Make a donation to save lives from AIDS! Support new treatment development at: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/funding-a-new-therapy-against-drug-resistant-hiv/x/9240077

Despite the great progress made in HIV/AIDS treatment, there is still an urgent need for new drugs, particularly for people who have had to abandon existing treatments due to HIV drug resistance and side effects.

The current treatment of HIV/AIDS involves the use of three or more drugs from five main general classes, used in combination. While this antiretroviral therapy (ART) has helped to reduced morbidity and mortality from AIDS, long term toxicity and the emergence and transmission of drug resistant HIV strains limit the effectiveness. Thus, despite therapy which can render this a chronic, rather than acute fatal infection, development of new drugs to prevent infection and overcome drug resistant strains, is increasingly urgent.

ViroCarb Inc. is developing a novel technology that addresses infections by drug resistant HIV strains. Developed from the identification of a new, natural resistance factor against HIV infection by scientists at SickKids and Canadian Blood Services, ViroCarb’s inhibitor works against a previously overlooked target on the virus to block HIV from entering human cells, the very first step in the infection. It works against all HIV strains.

Funds are needed to aid in moving forward to support preclinical studies; therefore ViroCarb Inc. has started an international crown funding campaign to carry out these HIV model studies needed before conducting clinical trials.
Please support this new way to block HIV.

Health Gorilla Releases Mobile Application for Doctors

Digital Health Leader Expands Marketplace Access with Mobility

SUNNYVALE, CA., 2014-8-20 — /EPR Healthcare News/ — Health Gorilla™, Inc., the first online healthcare marketplace to connect doctors and clinicians with over 9,000+ diagnostic labs and 35,000+ radiology centers, has announced today the release of Health Gorilla mobile.  Health Gorilla mobile provides access to the Health Gorilla Marketplace through the Apple® iPhone® and iPad™.

Today over 68% of doctors have standardized on the Apple platform to communicate with peers and patients. Doctors can now use their mobile devices to place electronic orders with Health Gorilla mobile to diagnostic labs, radiology centers, physical therapy, skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and durable medical equipment (DME) and other medical providers nationwide with the ability to track and review the results instantly as they arrive.  Physicians can then forward electronic results within their practice or exchange them with peers and patients to streamline the process and improve quality of care.

According to a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine noted that approximately 59.3% of all of a primary care physician’s daily emails were for the interpretation of test results and 21.7% were responses to patients.  The use of email generally increases the risk for doctors and their patients as most email services are not HIPAA compliant.

Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported that researchers from the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston conducted a survey of primary care practitioners and found that a third reported missing alerts about test results from an electronic health record notification system designed to inform them when a patient has abnormal test results.

Doctors are adopting iPad and iPhones as the platform of choice to communicate with peers and patients. Health Gorilla mobile integrated messaging greatly reduces the risk in communication between a doctor and their patients by offering a fully HIPAA compliant environment. Health Gorilla mobile enables a physician to securely and compliantly forward diagnostic test results, radiology images, admission and discharge summaries and other clinical documents to patients and care coordinators through secure messaging.

Benefits of Health Gorilla Mobile Include:

  • HIPAA compliant and ONC modular certified MU2 solution
  • Order in less time than it takes to use fax forms
  • Receive results faster wherever you are
  • Forward results to patients instantly
  • Immediately refer results to another doctor and send messages
  • Eliminate error prone paper processes
  • Mobile solution available at no charge for doctors and their teams

“We believe that the value proposition is clear and compelling for doctors and their teams.” said Steve Yaskin, Chief Executive Office, Health Gorilla, Inc.  “The existing process is heavily dependent on paper, fax and manual processing.  It is slow, cumbersome and prone to error.  Doctors can better manage their time, and the time of their administrative and care coordinating teams, by using the power of the marketplace through the Health Gorilla app.  Now they have one place to order from any diagnostic lab, radiology center, hospital, physical therapy, sleep center, SNF and other healthcare providers in the United States.  A doctor can start with us the first day and begin ordering through the marketplace immediately.  Health Gorilla is the first to deliver this capability.  No other vendor can provide this benefit.”

Health Gorilla mobile is available as an approved Apple® enterprise application and will be distributed to existing Health Gorilla Marketplace users via a secure link for the next month.  In September Health Gorilla mobile app will be available from the Apple® store and will be fully integrated with the Apple® Health app upon its release.

About Health Gorilla
Health Gorilla™ is the first online healthcare marketplace to connect all doctors and clinicians with over 9,000+ diagnostic labs and 35,000+ radiology centers.  Doctors and their teams can instantly place orders, get results, and completely eliminate paper faxes. Uniquely, our HIPAA compliant and ONC modular certified MU2 solution is available immediately at absolutely no charge for doctors and clinicians.

Virtual Pediatrics is set to launch in 10 states (AZ, CA, FL, GA, IL, NJ, NY, NC, TX & VA) this month.

Virtual Pediatrics Providers

Virtual Pediatrics dedicated and compassionate providers, who are board certified, licensed and credentialed to practice in their respective state, remain on standby for consultation from the hours of 8am to 12am, seven days a week.

Why Wait?

Children no longer need to wait a day or two to see their family doctor, nor will they have to wait in a crowded office or ER waiting room with other sick patients for minor ailments. By receiving an immediate telemedicine consultation and treatment, kids won’t miss additional days of school, parents won’t have to call out from work and worry about additional lost wages, and most importantly, sick or injured children can start getting better sooner.

Save Money

The cost of a Virtual Pediatrics consultation is less than many walk-in clinic fees and insurance co-pays, especially those expensive ER copays parents often pay after hours, when their doctor’s office is closed.

What and Where Do Virtual Pediatrics Providers Treat?

Virtual Pediatrics can treat your child anywhere – home, daycare, or on vacation. This month, Virtual Pediatrics will launch in 10 states (Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Texas and Virginia). Each month, additional states will be added until Virtual Pediatrics providers are able to care for children in all 50 states. Illnesses or ailments that can be treated through online consultations include, but are not limited to:

Abrasions, Allergies, Bites & Stings, Body Aches, Bronchitis, Bruises, Burns, Colic, Cough, Croup, Dehydration, Diarrhea, Ear Ache, Fever, Flu, Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease, Headaches, Hives, Itchy Eyes, Lice, Medication Refills, Minor Head Injuries, Nasal Congestion, Nausea, Pink Eye, Rashes, Reflux, Respiratory Infections, Seasonal Allergies, Sinus Infections, Skin Infections, Sore Throat, Sprains & Strains, Travel Medications, Urinary Tract Infections (Only for Older Kids), Vomiting

How Does It Work?

Parents can go to www.virtualpediatrics.com and click “start visit”, after which they will be directed to the registration page of our partner company, MeMD. Once the secure patient account is created, parents complete a brief medical history form for their child and submit payment, at which point they are directed to a patient care coordinator who will arrange the consultation between patient and healthcare provider. Upon completion of the webcam consultation, a Virtual Pediatrics provider will provide an individual treatment plan for the child’s ailment and, if needed, e-prescribe any medication to a local pharmacy that the family selected during the registration process. After the visit is concluded, parents can login to the patient account and print their child’s medical record as well as discharge instructions for their specific condition.

Leading Edge of Pediatric Healthcare

Virtual Pediatrics is working toward becoming the national leader in pediatric telemedicine, while providing excellent medical care to children and families in need. In this era of social media and advanced video technology, the practice of medicine is constantly evolving, and Virtual Pediatrics is at the frontier of this rapidly developing area of pediatric healthcare.

Night Time Pediatrics Group That Focuses On Free Care For Medicaid Families Opens It’s Third Clinic In Dallas Metroplex

Pediamed will open in a new location in Dallas Texas. Pediamed Children’s Night Clinics provide the opportunity for Medicaid families to bring their children in for FREE acute care and not have to take time off from work. In addition, the clinics will help the state as a whole, by reducing the traffic of non-urgent visits to the emergency room.

With the growing concern of misuse of the emergency room Pediamed Pediatric Night Clinics has opened it’s 3rd location in the Dallas Metroplex area. The clinic will be located at 3535 Buckner, Suite 100, Dallas TX and will be open 6pm to 10pm 7 days a week Monday- Friday 6pm to 10pm and Sat-Sun 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Pediamed focuses on serving the Medicaid population. Most Medicaid visits are free. Medicaid families are often forced to use the emergency room for common ailments, such as coughs and colds. They are forced to visit the emergency department because of the shortage of Medicaid providers in lower income areas of Dallas. The Parent can not afford to take the time off from work so the Parent exercises the emergency room as their only Medicaid option.

“Our goals are to ensure that sick children are tended to quickly in a comfortable environment,” says Guillermo Acosta, CEO of Pedi360. “We also want parents to stop the overuse of the emergency room and save it for real emergencies.”

In North Texas, Pediamed has entered into a contractual relationship with Parkland Community Health Plan in providing acute care to their Medicaid and CHIP members, representing close to 200,000 enrolled members within Dallas County.

“We project that Pediamed will be providing care for over 70,000 patient visits per year by the end of 2014,” Don McCoy, Pedi360 COO stated. “We are confident this after hours care alternative will help reduce non-emergent visits to the hospital emergency room and lower the cost of the Texas Medicaid program.”

Aging and Genes: Nutrition is Key

Each year, millions of Americans die of preventable, often chronic disease. This happens because people believe disease is caused by things they can’t control: inherited genes or aging. Neither is true. Health experts know that about 80% of health status is determined by daily choices and gene activity, not inherited genes or age.

Most genes are active day and night. They respond to many activities, especially nutrition. Other areas play a role, including, exercise, stress, weight and inflammation. In fact, it’s normal to replace about 1 billion cells every hour, and over time, that complex process of cell division can cause mutations and errors. What’s more, those risks are markedly increased by an unhealthy lifestyle.

A new, breakthrough article called, “Telomeres Genes and Aging” explores these critical issues and includes the latest research. The article includes critical “how to” tips to prevent chronic disease and improve longevity! It’s based on more than 50 credible source links, including numerous studies and expert sources. Some key findings are:

1. Nutrition and micro-nutrient intakes (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants) are key factors for gene activation and repair, including telomere length and longevity.

2. Other lifestyle areas contribute to gene health, including weight status, sleep, stress, activity, etc., and they all contribute to gene function, replication and repair.

3. Sirtuin proteins also help to activate or silence genes, especially those for metabolism, stress response, brain function, longevity, etc. Sirtuins are also enhanced by nutrient intake and harmed by nutrient deficiencies.

There is now enough research to show how to maximize gene health and replication, including telomere length, health and longevity. By making the right choices, gene health can be maximized, including the repair of mutations and genetic errors. Humans can largely control their health and destiny today!

Largest Temporary Renal Dialysis Unit Deployed at King’s College Hospital

A temporary renal dialysis unit at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been increased in size to maximise efficiency, enabling the treatment of a greater number of patients.

The Liberty Quad unit, which links four 13.6m medical trailers together, has been providing essential care to hundreds of patients at the Trust’s Dulwich Community Hospital site since it was installed by EMS-Healthcare in February last year.

Initially intended as a six-month temporary solution, its success has led to the contract being extended until 2015 as well as its capacity increased.

The addition of a fifth mobile medical trailerhas created an eight-bed ward, plus a dedicated recovery bay and spacious, clean utility storage as well as a large comfortable working station for nursing staff. It is the largest single unit healthcare facility to be deployed by EMS-Healthcare.

Keith Austin, CEO in EMS-Healthcare said: “We took on board the Trust’s feedback and made significant improvements to the unit to help maximise efficiency and provide a more comfortable and spacious workplace for nurses to treat their patients.

“A major benefit of the Liberty Quad Plus facility is that it can be deployed quickly and efficiently as there is no structure to build or major site preparation required. The fifth unit was simply driven onto site and all fit out changes made over a weekend to ensure minimal impact on patient service.”

The temporary renal dialysis unit provides the ultimate flexible solution to estate management and clinical teams, ensuring King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust can continue to provide high levels of life-saving care. The facility is operational six days a week delivering three sessions per day to groups of eight patients at a time.
