Stretch Physio Launches New Online Yoga Photo Competition

The Chelmsford-based physiotherapy clinic has launched a brand new social media competition in conjunction with sister company The Hummingbird Centre.

The competition was inspired by a photo the team received via Twitter from Alison Fuller, who captured her foreign adventures on camera by striking a lotus pose while taking a break on the Bolivian Salt Flats in Uyuni. This beautifully striking picture captured the imagination of the owners of Stretch Physio and neighbour The Hummingbird Centre. The team is now asking for more travellers to get in touch with photos of themselves doing yoga or Pilates around the world.

The owner of each photo received will then be put into the draw to win an amazing prize with the company’s Directors. The prize includes a physiotherapy session with Ellie Searle, specialist physiotherapist and Director of Stretch and The Hummingbird Centre, a one-to-one Pilates session with Kellie Jones, Director of The Hummingbird Centre, experienced Pilates teacher and general Pilates and yoga guru, and an en vogue hot yoga class, which will be coming soon to the Centre.

Facebook fans have responded well to the launch of the competition and the team at Stretch and The Hummingbird Centre have received some stunning entries to date.

The two centres decided to launch a joint competition to better promote the wide range of classes and treatments offered at The Hummingbird Centre.

“Naturally, we wanted to use the contest to raise awareness of our business in the local area, but we also wanted to get our online audience more involved in what we do by incentivising them to share their imagery and experiences,” says Ellie Searle.

“Myself and my business partner Kellie both believe that a picture speaks a thousand words. We think that these beautiful photos encapsulate the soothing and calming effects that regular yoga or Pilates can have on an individual. We hope these images will inspire many of our followers to give yoga or Pilates a try at the Centre in order to fully understand why so many people consider these practices to be such an integral part of their overall health and wellbeing.”

Those interested in entering the contest are encouraged to visit The Hummingbird Centre’s Facebook page for entry details. The winner will be announced on 5th January 2014, but participants are encouraged to refer back to the company’s social media profiles for updates, special offers and future competitions.

Stretch Physiotherapy & Pilates is based at The Hummingbird Centre, a specialist Pilates and yoga centre in Chelmsford. Stretch Physiotherapy & Pilates offers a wide range of musculoskeletal physiotherapy expertise in their well equipped private clinic. In addition to offering physiotherapy, the team also offer massage treatments, acupuncture and one-to-one Pilates training. New study grant seeks understanding of genetics and alcoholism correlation

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently awarded a grant for research into the correlation between genetics, environment and alcoholism.

Researcher Tatiyana Apanasovich hopes to find evidence that supports her theory that hypothesizes that 40% to 60% of alcohol dependence is caused by genetic factors as well as environmental factors. She bases her hypothesis on recent discoveries regarding the correlation of overeating and addiction.

“We congratulate Ms. Apanasovich on receiving this grant to study alcoholism,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “We look forward to seeing her findings and hope that it will provide new information that will help in addiction treatment for individuals.”

Early Detection & Eye Exams Needed to Prevent Macular Degeneration Vision Loss

“As Prevent Blindness America has designated February as National Age Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month, on behalf of the eye doctors at D’Ambrosio Eye Care we want to stress the need for regular eye exams to ensure early detection of macular degeneration as the key to preventing vision loss,” shared Massachusetts Ophthalmologist Francis D’Ambrosio Jr., M.D. “Patients-especially those 50 and over-need to know that age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in Americans older than 50,” explained Dr. D’Ambrosio Jr. “While it is not possible to actually cure AMD, our clinical experience demonstrates that with early detection, diagnosis and treatment when necessary we can be quite effective in helping patients prevent vision loss and in many instances we can help recover some lost vision.”

It is advisable for everyone older than 50 to have a comprehensive, dilated eye examination every one to two years to ensure that AMD is detected as early as possible. If anyone in your family has macular degeneration it is critical to be seen even earlier and more often. “We want to be as certain as possible that if you are at risk for macular degeneration or show any signs of “Wet” AMD such as the growth of unwanted blood vessels under the retina-we make sure you have access to treatment with Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) inhibitor injections such as Lucentis® as soon as possible. By learning the symptoms to watch for, bringing to our attention and getting treatment as quickly as possible we can stop the blood vessel growth, reverse it and at a minimum prevent further vision loss and often actually improve vision,” explained Dr. D’Ambrosio Jr.

Patients can also help to decrease their risk of developing age related macular degeneration (AMD) by not smoking, moderating alcohol consumption to less than 15g per day, eating a heart-healthy diet rich in fish, fruit and green leafy vegetables, avoiding foods with trans fats, exercising and controlling blood pressure and weight.

D’Ambrosio Eye Care is a leading practice serving the greater Boston and central Massachusetts area including Acton, Athol, Berlin, Bolton, Boylston, Boxborough, Chelmsford, Clinton, Concord, Fitchburg, Gardner, Greenfield, Groton, Harvard, Hudson, Lancaster, Leominster, Lexington, Littleton, Lowell, Lunenburg, Marlborough, Milford, Shelburne Falls, Shirley, Sterling, Stow, Sudbury, Templeton, Westminster, Westborough, Winchendon and Worcester, Massachusetts.

Innovative Drug Discovery Business, Biosortia Pharmaceuticals, Lands Two Health Care Veterans

Kurt Dieck formerly SVP of Strategy and Business Execution at Cardinal Health, will lead early stage drug discovery business at Biosortia Pharmaceuticals. Dieck was named President and CEO in November 2012 and has quickly identified other key executives, including Dr. Guy Carter, former Natural Product head at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, as his Chief Science Officer. In conjunction, other collaboration partners have joined the team, including NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), NCI (National Cancer Institute) and key universities, to strategically accelerate the development of novel drug leads in the therapeutic areas of cancer, infectious diseases, inflammation and neurological disorders. Biosortia Pharmaceuticals has seen promising early results with dozens of novel compounds having already been requested, and are under evaluation with NCI and Eli Lilly.

Dieck has spent nearly 30 years in healthcare, including 18 years at Arthur Andersen as a global equity partner and then 10 years with Cardinal Health, a Fortune 20 public company, as a senior executive; there he worked with a broad spectrum of partners, including brand pharmaceutical manufacturers, throughout the supply chain. Dr. Guy Carter has over 30 years of experience working in pharmaceutical R&D, primarily in the discovery and development of microbial natural products. He previously was the leader of natural products drug discovery at Wyeth Research, as head of the Chemical Technologies Department.

“Kurt and Guy make a great team. Their complementary Pharma experiences and backgrounds create great opportunities to accelerate Biosortia’s objective to become the premier, aquatic natural products company with a primary focus in drug discovery,” says Ross Youngs, Biosortia’s Founder and Chairman. “Kurt and Guy bring a wealth of research and business experience along with deep industry relationships in building successful Pharma partnerships. Everyone involved with this young biotech is excited about the future.”

Industry observers have commented that late-stage R&D pipelines are not providing Pharma with the desired revenue growth the market is expecting. Therefore, large Pharma is evolving the way it performs R&D in order to optimize efficiency and to boost patent cliff defenses. These changes require shifting from relying solely on in-house chemistry-based R&D to acquiring and licensing external technologies and natural products based compounds in various stages of development. Biosortia’s ability to supply novel, highly active and potent compounds with drug-like characteristics will increase the productivity and success rate for Pharma as well as reduce the overall cost of the discovery process. The cost to discover, develop and launch a new drug is estimated to reach nearly $3B per drug by 2015. Biosortia’s business model is designed specifically to support Pharma’s needs.

“With nearly unlimited microorganisms (3.7 nonillion), the aquatic environment and its consortia represent an extraordinary opportunity…a new frontier, to access extremely potent and chemically diverse secondary metabolites with drug-like properties with unique mechanisms of action never researched before,” said Dieck. In describing the opportunity, Dieck goes on to say, “Biosortia is on the cutting edge of natural product discovery
and has the capabilities to deliver on its aspiration. Our powerful natural products research team, led by Dr. Guy Carter, in partnership with NOAA’s Dr. Peter Moeller, a leader in aquatic natural products research, has the experience and know-how to decipher the complex unexplored environment in a very efficient manner leveraging all the current state of the art instrumentation. The need for more efficient and effective approaches to drug discovery has never been more important. Biosortia’s innovative technologies, deep research skills and key relationships will efficiently provide thousands of unique natural products as candidates for drug discovery at a time when Pharma is in critical need for “high quality shots on goal.”

“Aquatic microbial consortia are a rich source of metabolically active organisms including microalgae, bacteria, fungi and their secondary metabolites,” states Carter. “Owing to the competitive nature of their habitat, chemical investigations of microbial consortia reveal unique structurally diversified natural products that are responsible for signaling and self-defense that have potential as therapeutics with novel mechanisms of action. Since they have been pre-optimized by nature, these compounds are typically closer to a drug candidate than a synthetic lead, thus requiring less optimization and shorter time when found as ‘hits’ in screening programs.”

The team has also focused on agreements with strategic collaboration partners as vital components to the strategy. Biosortia has recently entered into several collaboration agreements with NOAA, Analyticon and exclusive harvesting relationships, just to name a few. Several others will be advanced by the end of January. Biosortia’s cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with NOAA’s Center for Human Health Risk at Hollings Marine Laboratory provides a 5-year framework for research and development regarding the analysis and purification of novel bioactive compounds. According to NOAA’s Technology Partnerships Office, “Success will result in the commercial development of new and unique chemical compounds from the sea which have benefits to human health, either through disease prevention or new treatments for disease.”

Dr. Peter Moeller, NOAA’s Research Scientist who leads the Toxins Natural Products Program stated after analyzing fractions of Biosortia’s biomass, “Coupling NOAA’s mission of characterizing toxins affecting environmental and/or human health with Biosortia’s drug discovery focus turns one man’s toxin into another’s chemotherapeutic. The microorganisms analyzed in the Biosortia biomass identified more unique activity than I have seen in my 30 year career. The volumes achieved from a single harvest delivered an equivalent of 30 years of accumulation. This could materially change the landscape for natural products drug discovery research.”

As of December 31, 2012, Biosortia has identified more than 30 bioactive candidate compounds (hits) from a fresh water eutrophic lake consortium. Therapeutic areas of focus include treatments for cancer, infectious diseases, inflammation and neurological disorders. In addition, more than a dozen of its patent protected compounds are in initial evaluation stage within Eli Lilly’s Open Innovation Drug Discovery Program.

Dieck states, “Looking forward, it is with great optimism. We have a great team built around mutual respect, deep experience, and a desire to succeed and make a difference. We are aligning with the right partners and collaborators to execute our strategy with speed and discipline to provide Pharma with much high quality & diverse compounds vs. “me-too” drugs than they have had in the past 10 years. We are excited about what this company can accomplish, not only for its shareholders but also for the millions of people who have been diagnosed with various forms of chronic diseases who are looking for Pharma to identify better ways to help them extend their lives or live a more productive life. Biosortia can play a big role in identifying compounds that can help Pharma achieve these goals. I am looking forward to the challenge and opportunity to build an industry leading drug discovery company.”

The Hearing Company Reveal Handy Tips for Hearing Aid Users to Stay Active and Play Sports

As we look back upon a fantastic year for British sport, the UK’s leading provider of modern hearing aids has some great ideas about participating in sport, despite any hearing difficulty.

When the success of the London 2012 Olympic Games was only added to by the Paralympic games, an important message was sent out which made clear that just about anybody could take part in fun and exciting competitive sport and all would benefit from doing so; even those with hearing difficulties.

The modern hearing aid allows the hearing impaired to lead as normal a life as possible, and do many of the things that they might have done previously. But wearing hearing aids and playing various sports can be extremely challenging, whether those sports are played individually, or as part of a team.

Communication is vital in team sport, but that communication needn’t purely be verbal. If you are keen to remove your hearing aid during the game, it is important to speak to your coach and your teammates and suggest the best way for them to communicate with you during practice and match play. When the coach is dishing out important words of wisdom, make sure you have a clear line of sight to the information, or suggest an alternative method of getting the information across, such as a whiteboard.

As small electronic devices, a number of hearing aids can be sensitive to excessive sweat. A simple headband or sweatband will prevent any moisture from affecting the hearing aid, and can even help to keep the device in place.

A number of waterproof digital hearing aids are available, and these devices, won’t just help with a little sweat, but can also be worn whilst swimming. These devices are more expensive to purchase and are only recommended to regular swimmers.

For more information about the different types of hearing aid available and the ways to book a hearing test with The Hearing Company, visit the official website today.

A More Effective Source Of Vitamin C Than Oranges Or Standard Supplements

Vitamin C is crucial to a person’s health has long been known, but what is less known is the different methods of how it is absorbed into the body.

Some delivery methods are better than others. Citrus fruits, like oranges, do deliver a good dose of vitamin C, but it’s not the best way. Most supplements only provide about 16% absorption.

As proven in repeated scientific studies published in peer-reviewed journals, Lypo-Spheric vitamin C has the highest absorption rates of any form of the vitamin. It is available in capsule form from Vitamin Pros, http://www.vitaminpros.com/lypo-spheric-vitamin-c.html.

“After through research we believe Lypo Spheric vitamin c is the best form of vitamin C available today … the bioavailability of this product far out performs any other product,” said Chris Kochan, president of Vitamin Pros.

About 98 percent of this form of the vitamin is absorbed by the body, greatly surpassing all other forms.

That statement about lypo spheric vitamin C is backed up by a study published in the “Journal of Nutritional & Environmental Medicine” in 2008.

Vitamin Pros delivers vitamin C to the body in a liposomal encapsulation system. This capsule system has also been studied by researchers and found to be extremely effective.

“We want to educate our visitors about vitamin C. Lypo spheric prevents the vitamin from degrading. The liposomal system makes sure the vitamin reaches the bloodstream and cell where it can go to work,” he said. “You can get vitamin C supplements anywhere, but you will not find a technology that delivers more of this critical vitamin to your body than this form.”

Vitamin C is important for wound healing and enzymatic reactions. It boosts the immune system and pays a key part in collagen building. Vitamin C is a first line defense in fighting the common cold. It is a natural antioxidant. For more information visitwww.vitaminpros.com/lypo-spheric-vitamin-c.html

New Product Provides Hope for Hiccup Sufferers

Just as there is no cure for the common cold there has not been a treatment for the hiccups. But an inventor in Sacramento, California believes he has developed just the thing to stop hiccups cold.

Chuck Ray who suffered from hiccups for years came up with the tool he calls the Hiccup Stick quite by accident while fiddling with something in his mouth. After several working models, months of trial and error and with the help of family and friends he has parlayed his efforts into a new company that now offers consumers the first ever product to stop their hiccups.

Ray’s company, Hicural began selling the patent-pending Hiccup Stick about a year ago after demonstrating its effectiveness and gauging interest among potential retailers and consumers alike. Already, Ray says, the Hiccup Stick has helped hundreds of people of all ages from casual sufferers to those with more chronic hiccup issues. “It hasn’t been just one particular group of people. It’s been everyone. Parents have bought it for their kids, for themselves, their parents or their friends. It really has been amazing,” Ray said.

Although nothing can prevent hiccups from occurring, Ray says the Hiccup Stick can stop them in seconds whenever they occur no matter the cause. The person using it simply places the flexible and reusable plastic stick-like device with an open gate in their mouth while drinking a few sips of water from a glass. Within a few seconds, Ray says their hiccups are gone.

Ray says that although there are a lot of home remedies that people swear by, he believes they don’t work for everyone with any consistency. And so far, interest in the new hiccup stick has proven that. “People will tell me about a remedy that works for them which is great but there are many others who can benefit and have from using the product because it solves a real problem.”

Ray says the next step is proving the product in clinical environments where hiccup issues are much more severe. Ray says he has heard from doctors who have treated surgery patients with the powerful anti-psychotic drug Thorazine which has harmful side effects including high blood pressure and memory loss. Other doctors have told him that chemotherapy patients also suffer from severe hiccups.

The Hiccup Stick, the carrying tube it comes in and its packaging is manufactured entirely in the U.S.

The Hiccup Stick comes with a full money back guarantee and retails for $7.99. The product is now available in catalogs, some regional stores and online at cvs.com, drugstore.com, walgreens.com as well on the company’s own website, www.hicural.com.

Unconstitutional Retaliation by Health Agency (NYSDOH) Cost Taxpayers $25 Million

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) agreed to pay the owners of the Beechwood Nursing Home, located in Rochester, New York, $25 Million dollars to settle litigation in which a federal jury had already determined that NYSDOH officials, in a context of malfeasant comportment, had illegally revoked the operating license of the facility in 1999 in retaliation against its owners, resulting in Beechwood’s closure. The jury was scheduled to decide how much to award in damages when the parties reached a settlement.

The NYSDOH, known for disregarding Fourteenth Amendment rights (such as the right to have witnesses for one’s defense) in its actions against the state’s health professionals, has been challenged to conform to proper judicial practices, most notably via bills introduced by the New York State Legislature. All bills were vetoed by Governor George E. Pataki in 2004. According to Dr. Gérard Sunnen, a New York psychiatrist with long experience caring for patients in city hospitals and nursing homes, “the closure of the Home undoubtedly tore apart the social fabric and the connective support sustaining its tenants and patients, likely resulting in serious stress reactions, with all attendant consequences, physical and psychological.”

The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle filed this report on the unconstitutional retaliation settlement. According to its August 22, 2012 article, the presentation of provocative e-mails, written by NYSDOH officials in the wake of Beechwood’s closure, was a key point in the case. Jurors in the case “pointed to the e-mails as the proof they needed of the state’s malice.” Although Beechwood’s owners sued multiple NYSDOH officials at the outset of the litigation in 2002, five were eventually found liable for the illegal revocation of the operating license: current Health Department officials Susan Baker and Cynthia Francis, and former officials Laura Leeds, Sanford Rubin, and Sharon Carlo. These individuals will not be personally liable for the $25 Million settlement.

New York State taxpayers, however, are the ones to shoulder the burden of the full award.

Leading UK Breast Enlargement Clinic, Aurora Clinics, Release a YouTube Video to Promote their Unique Three Point Plan

Aurora is a Leading Cosmetic Surgery Clinic with a Number of Clinics Operating Throughout the UK. Specialising in Breast Enlargement Surgery, Aurora has Released their YouTube Video Explaining the Procedure and their Three Point Treatment Plan.

Aurora is harnessing the power of YouTube, now the world’s second biggest search engine, by releasing a new YouTube video that explains their unique three point treatment plan for those thinking about undergoing breast enlargement surgery.

“Our three point plan is designed to help our patients achieve the results they wish for in the safest possible environment.” explains Aurora’s spokesperson. All breast enlargement patients are entitled to unlimited free consultation appointments with the surgeon who will carry out their procedure, making sure that all of the patient’s questions are answered and no doubts about surgery remain in their mind.

The first step on their three point plan is all of Aurora’s patients and potential patients have access to a specialist surgeon in a convenient location for them. From that patient’s first appointment, they will meet the surgeon who will carry out their procedure. “We have developed a network of the best and most experienced breast enlargement surgeons throughout the UK” says their spokesperson. They offer breast enlargement London, breast enlargement Birmingham, as well as a number of other locations within the UK.

Included in the patient’s unlimited free consultation appointments is a sizing appointment. This appointment makes up the second step of the three point plan. In the sizing appointment, patients can bring different items of their clothing so their surgeon can try a variety of different makes, shapes and sizes of breast enlargement implants. Aurora’s spokesperson explains, “This enables the patient to get a really good idea of what their appearance will be post surgery and achieve the result they are looking for.”

Aurora Clinics and their surgeons know how important it is that patients have a realistic expectation of their appearance post surgery, and take into account the patient’s ideal outcome when advising on them on the best treatment to achieve this outcome. “All of the treatment options will be discussed in full at the patients’ consultation appointments. Not only do we offer breast enlargement, but we also carry out other breast surgeries such as breast uplift, inverted nipple correction and breast reduction. For example, often those who have lost a large amount of weight or have breastfed opt for both breast enlargement and a breast uplift to achieve their desired result. Our surgeons are highly skilled in advising patients what the most appropriate treatment is.” their spokesperson explains.

The third and final step of the three point plan is Aurora’s After Care Policy. As part of their after care policy, patients are given access to and are encouraged to use their 24 hour hotline. Patients are also invited to come back to their local clinic for free yearly appointments with their surgeon to check that their breast enlargement procedure remains fine.

Added to this, Aurora Clinics are now offering patients their initial consultation online. “We believe we are the first UK company to do this and it allows anyone thinking about breast enlargement to discuss this online with a specialist breast enlargement surgeon.” says their spokesperson.

In their YouTube video the Surgical Director of Aurora Clinics, Adrian Richards, takes viewers through their three point plan from their Buckinghamshire clinic. “We have a number of videos already on YouTube but with this we wanted to take a different direction and explain to people the full process of a breast enlargement treatment.” he explains. Accompanying this video are a number of other videos that answer some of the most commonly asked questions about breast enlargement surgery and related treatments.

For more information on Aurora’s three point plan, watch their YouTube video athttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfNg2GveXzI. Alternatively, visit their websitehttp://www.aurora-clinics.co.uk/treatments_chest_breast_enlargement.html

EMS Healthcare is helping The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre deliver care closer to the community with the development of a bespoke mobile chemotherapy unit.

Clatterbridge in the Community will take to the road from early January, delivering treatment to patients at the Sealand Tesco site as a pilot prior to a roll out across Chester and the Wirral, using its fully customised mobile medical unit to reduce unnecessary stress from travel and help to cut down waiting times.

Keith Austin, Managing Partner in EMS-Healthcare said: “We have been working closely with The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre to develop a mobile facility that will ensure they can deliver first class patient care close to people’s homes, right in the heart of the community. The medical vehicle has been designed specially to meet their requirements and we anticipate that it will house the largest mobile chemotherapy treatment space in the country.”

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is one of the largest networked cancer centres in the UK. From nine operating sites across Merseyside and Cheshire it treats over 27,000 patients a year, offering pioneering chemotherapy, radiotherapy and proton therapy treatments.

Kim Barrow, Head of Daycase and Outpatient Services at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre said: “Over the last few months EMS Healthcare has been working hard to turn our vision into reality. We are delighted with the progress and look forward to launching the new care unit to patients in the New Year.”

EMS-Healthcare’s work with The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre follows a successful health roadshow campaign delivered on behalf of cancer charity, Tenovus, which treated 15 chemo patients per day in South Wales. This mobile medical unit was the first of its kind in the UK.

Vital International Studies has Concluded that Aging can be Controlled

Middle aged Americans are terrified of becoming old and many say they are obsessed with coloring their gray hair. The findings of most people becoming self-conscience about aging, in spite of the old adage of “luring gray is distinguished”, are surprising findings of more than 12 months of ongoing studies, discussions and ramped up product sales of the company’s resveratrol.

In recent years, astounding results obtained in laboratories ion vertebrate and invertebrate mammals including mice and fish offer promises on many levels of health and wellness for humans. Consequently, Resveratrol has become the subject of more new scientific studies than almost any chemical compound on earth. …And for Americans, that seems to be more than suitable towards mitigating the signs of aging.

I have tried many products over the years but have never gotten the results that I am getting with your Resveratrol products!!! I have taken Vital-resV & Vital-flex as suggested -every day – two times per day for approx. 3 months.   At my recent medical checkup I got amazing results………HOORAY………THANK YOU

NICK “THE BEAR” KINZIGER

Resveratrol is a natural chemical compound found in the skin of red grapes, as well as a host of other plants and foods including mulberries, peanuts, and, of course, red wine.Resveratrol is a naturally powerful antioxidant that rids the body of free radicals. Laboratory studies have shown resveratrol protects the heart, may prevent cancer cells from forming, improves insulin sensitivity, increases the number of calories burned during exercise, and filters toxic minerals from the body.

Vital-resv.com provides consumer with the most effect form of resveratrol from its proprietary formula which includes Acai berry extract, Maqui berry extract and Grape seed extract. “The reason Vital-ResV is the most effective resveratrol, is amid the Company’s bio-enhanced technology for increased absorption”, says Chris Ingram, President at Vital International.

Microtissues® Inc. and Sigma-Aldrich® Sign Worldwide Supply and Distribution Agreement for the 3D Petri Dish®

Microtissues® Inc. announced today the signing of a Supply and Distribution Agreement with Sigma-Aldrich® Corporation (Nasdaq: SIAL) for the worldwide sales and marketing of the 3D Petri Dish®, a new technology for the culture of living cells in three dimensions (3D). Invented at Brown University, the 3D Petri Dish® maximizes cell-to-cell interactions critical for replicating the function of natural tissues and organs. Shown in numerous peer reviewed papers to work with over fifty different cell types, including cell lines, primary cells and stem cells, the 3D Petri Dish® has applications in cancer research, drug discovery, toxicity testing and regenerative medicine.

“Researchers are rapidly recognizing the importance of 3D cell culture and its ability to reliably mimic in vivo function” said Brian Morgan, Director of Business Development, Microtissues® Inc. “The 3D Petri Dish® creates a natural 3D environment without artificial scaffolds and we’re excited that this distribution agreement will bring our unique and innovative line of products to the worldwide research community.”

Unlike the conventional plastic Petri dish where cells are grown as a thin layer on the surface of the dish, the 3D Petri Dish® forms 3D aggregates of cells. Spheroid size is controlled by the number of cells seeded and hundreds of uniform sized spheroids are formed in a single pipetting step. Spheroids are formed in a well ordered array in a stable platform suitable for long term culture. All spheroids are positioned on the same optical plane making them easy to image (phase contrast, fluorescent). Spheroid size is controlled by the number of cells seeded and a mixture of cells forms mixed spheroids, suitable for investigating tumor-stroma interactions. Spheroids can be grown from single cells, applicable to the study of cancer stem cells. For histology, Western blots and RT-PCR, spheroids are harvested by simply inverting the 3D Petri Dish®. No need to dissolve or digest the gel. The 3D Petri Dish® is a new fundamental tool for the world wide industry of life sciences research.

Is it a Moment or an Abuse: the Boom of iPSCs Research after 2012 Medicine Nobel Prize

On Creative Biomart website, we can read a report about the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine regarding the two winners. They bring hope for organ or tissue repair for human or even for rejuvenation, i.e. for long life through induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

Since the first appearance in 2006, iPSCs became the hit and focus. But there are still lots of unknowns waiting for us before achieving the ideal status. Thus, numerous scientists, researchers and businessmen are struggling and investing for that goal. Here are some examples:

On Dec. 5, 2012, Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) and the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) announced today the launch of StemBANCC, a new academic–industry partnership that unites ten pharmaceutical companies and 23 academic institutions. Initiated and coordinated by Roche and managed by Oxford University, StemBANCC aims to use human induced pluripotent stem cells as research tools for drug discovery with the goal of using this ground-breaking new technology to develop human disease models and enhance drug development.

On Oct. 29, 2012, on the PANS Journal there is an article about Cartilage tissue engineering using differentiated and purified induced pluripotent stem cells.

On Oct. 4, 2012, on Cell Stem Cell, there is a report with the title be Genome Sequencing of Mouse Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Reveals Retroelement Stability and Infrequent DNA Rearrangement during Reprogramming.

On Jan. 30, 2012, on the PANS Journal, there is a report about modeling hepatitis C virus infection using human induced pluripotent stem cells, which make the individual and tailor therapy further.

Above are only a small part of such studies. People still wonder does it is the moment or an abuse on the iPSCs research. When someone reviewed one of the winners, Shinya Yamanaka, about his opinion on the challenge of iPSCs research, he said, “I have two research directions, the first is to establish human iPSCs bank that comply with clinical application standards. The second is to study the cell mechanism of iPSCs regenerating. And I think the current threat is still to be the safety problem as good research respects both scientific and ethical standards.”

But no one deny the great potential of iPSCs.

Sierra Vista AZ. Dentist Announces 2012 Holiday Free iPad Contest

Dr. Steve Wolfington, of Cochise Caring Dentistry in Sierra Vista, AZ. announces their “2012 Holiday Free Contest for residents of Cochise County Arizona. “We selected the iPad for our first contest because it is one of the most popular items people are interested in” states Dr Wolfington.

Dr. Wolfington states, ”We wanted to thank all of our patients for their continued support and give back to our community, so we created our first annual Holiday Contest, where any one of our existing patients has several chances to win a free iPad when they refer a friend or family member. All they have to do is go to our Sierra Vista Dentist Free iPad Contest Entry Page and fill out a short entry form and they’re automatically entered to win. The drawing will be held on Dec 20th 2012 and the winner will be announced on our blog.

We keep our contests and referral offers pretty simple, all we ask is that a patient refers a friend or family member who may be interested in getting the best dental care in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The referring patient can enter our contest as many times as they want by entering a new friend referral each time.

Our entire staff wanted to do something for the holidays and we all thought the iPad would make someone a nice gift for this year’s holidays.

We treat many patients from Benson, Bisbee, Douglas and other outlying cities in Cochise County, even as far as Tucson in our dental office in Sierra Vista. Our Sierra Vista dental office has been in this location for over 30 years, and our staff members have treated and cared for 2 and 3 generations of our patient’s family and friends.

Outside of our first annual Holiday Contest we maintain our “Smile-A-Mile” Program. This is an on-going program we created to support our community year-round. Smile-A-Mile reimburses our patients for their round trip cost of gas for each visit. We calculated the mileage from each of the cities like Benson, Douglas, Tombstone, Bisbee and more, to ourSierra Vista Dentist Office. We used the average miles per gallon that a typical family vehicle gets according to statistics, and the average cost of per gallon of gas throughout Cochise County Arizona, and came up with our “Smile-A-Mile Program”. As an example, our Benson Arizona Patients are now being reimbursed $7.00 for each and every visit to our Sierra Vista Dental office, and all they need to do is bring in a water, electricity or phone bill to show proof of residence”.

At Cochise Caring Dentistry, we strive to be the most affordable Family Dental and Cosmetic Dentistry Practice in Cochise County. For all of our New Patients, we offer 50% off our Exams and Cleanings and 50% off our Professional Opalescence Teeth Whitening treatments for all patients to assist our customers in attaining quality dental health”.

UK Based Teeth Whitening Clinic, Smile Tech, Welcomes the New UK Law that Means Only Dentists can Perform Teeth Whitening Treatments

Following calls by the General Dental Council (GDT) to change the law and dental regulations to stop non-dentists carrying out teeth whitening treatments, those changes have been put in place and the law come into force in a move that has been applauded by the British Dental Health Foundation and the UK’s leading cosmetic teeth whitening clinic, Smile Tech.

A spokesperson for Smile Tech, which is one of the largest cosmetic teeth whitening providers in the UK and operate in shopping centres says, “We employ dentists to provide high quality, professional, safe treatments and an affordable price to the customer and that is why we have over 20,000 happy customers on our books to date.” They add, “We have always felt strongly about and fought those providers who have ignored the health and safety risks and given the professional teeth whitening clinics a bad name.”

Before this law change came into place, the regulations regarding tooth whitening procedures were a bit of a grey area. The 1984 Dentists Act came at a time before teeth whitening was a common practice, with the Act stating that “only dentists can perform dental procedures.” As teeth whitening is often seen as a cosmetic process as opposed to a dental process, non-dentists and non-dental professionals were able to carry out the treatment.

“There was often a lot of bad press towards teeth whitening clinics and providers that operated from shopping centres because there was very little control over who could or couldn’t carry out this procedure.” Smile Tech’s spokesperson explains, “We really suffered from this, as even though we have always used fully trained dentists, our Smile Tech premises are within shopping centres so we were bundled into this ‘unsafe’ category – which Smile Tech really isn’t!”

Smile Tech are now hoping that with local treading standards officers and the General Dental Council taking action to close down and prosecute any premises continuing to let non-dentists and non-dental care professionals carry out teeth whitening treatments, their customers and prospects can rest assured that they are safe in Smile Tech’s professional hands.

“Every single one of our clients have to go through a full and thorough consultation with our dentist before they undergo their teeth whitening treatment. Each year we turn away hundreds of people who, following their consultation, have been found to be unsuitable for the procedure.” Says the spokesperson for Smile Tech. They continue, “During the treatment’s set-up, we go to great lengths prior to applying the whitening gel to completely and totally isolate the teeth to ensure that the gel will not come into contact with the client’s gum. We also use a destaining agent and a de-sensitiser to give our clients the safest and most comfortable experience, whilst of course still achieving a great result.”

Vitamin D Pharmacy’s YouTube Video Surpasses the 2000 View Mark as Winter Sets in and the Hours of Vitamin D Producing Sunshine Decrease

New Life Pharmacy in Glasgow is on a mission to raise awareness of vitamin D deficiency and in turn, reduce the number of people suffering from its related health issues.

In April 2012 Elizabeth Roddick, Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, pharmacist and owner of the New Life Pharmacy released a video on YouTube that explains the health risks of being deficient in vitamin D. Low levels of this important vitamin have been linked with diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism and cancer.

More recently, studies have found that a high level of vitamin D in women under the age of 75 can decrease the risk of macular degeneration and the loss of central vision, which is a main cause of partial-blindness in people over 50 years old (Qureshah, 2012). Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to health issues and diseases such as rickets, multiple sclerosis, depression and respiratory tract infections.

Vitamin D is produced when ultra violet (UVB) rays coming from the sun hit the skin. It is then absorbed through the liver where it is converted to calcidiol. It then works to check the calcium and phosphate levels in the blood, which are important for maintaining healthy bones. Vitamin D can also be found in some foods such as eggs, oily fish and fortified cereals.

It is common knowledge that all people’s vitamin D levels drop during the winter (November to March) as the sun is weaker during this time. A recent study (Qureshah, 2012) found that during the winter 28 percent of women had deficient levels of vitamin D, and 33 percent of women had insufficient levels. Being regarded as deficient means the level of vitamin D is less than 20ng/mL, insufficient is having 20-29ng/mL. Compare this with the summer statistics where only 5% are deficient in vitamin D and the contrast is clear.

According to Roddick, the skin needs to be exposed at the hottest time of the day (between 10am and 3pm) for about 15 minutes. These are the hours where the UVB rays are strongest and so vitamin D is most prevalent. This of course completely opposes the advice given out by skin cancer charities who urge sun bathers and holiday makers to stay out of the sun during these peak hours. Roddick does add, “It is of course very important than the skin does not burn since that can lead to skin cancer.”

Roddick believes that, “supplementation is required for most people. Also, because there are certain people who shouldn’t take vitamin D and a wide range of doses are available it can be confusing. Advice needs to be available when purchasing the products.”
