Glucosamine To Help Protect Cartilage Suggests BestMultivitamins.co.uk

Recent research has shown that supplements including glucosamine do in fact protect and build cartilage tissue rather than purely acting as a pain killer designed specifically for joints.

Glucosamine To Help Protect Cartilage Suggests BestMultivitamins.co.uk

Glucosamine is a compound that exists naturally within the body. Made up of glucose and glutamine the compound is needed within the body to aid the formation process of cartilage and other body tissues. As humans grow the production of glucosamine slows which weakens the cartilage that serves to protect our joints.

Glucosamine made from chitin, a chemical found within the shells of shrimp, crab, lobster etc, is extremely popular both in sulphate tablet form and in liquids such as sports drinks. Vegetarian glucosamine supplements are also available from many health stores, which may be suitable for individuals with allergies to shellfish. In recent years there have been many studies that questioned the potency of the supplement, which has become popular in many health stores across the world.

Doctors are now beginning to stand by glucosamine in supplement form after recent research has proven that easily accessible supplements do in fact protect and build cartilage rather than just combating pain symptoms. Rheumatologist Dr Rod Hughes, from St Peters Hospital, Surrey, explains that the recent breakthroughs in research conducted in Belgium have shown that previous studies concluding that Glucosamine is merely a placebo must indeed have been inaccurate.

‘The results showed a statistically significant difference which could be measured in thickening of the cartilage,’ said Dr Hughes. ‘Glucosamine is one of the chemicals of which cartilage is made, feeding the chondrocytes which produce the strong healthy cartilage which is the shock absorber of the joints and it’s that which wears out in osteoarthritis.

Successful athletes, particularly those playing high impact sports that place joints and cartilage under huge pressure have often proclaimed the benefits of such supplements.

“Sports men and woman can now feel reassured in their choice to use supplements to strengthen their cartilage and protect their joints. It is never too early to think about looking after your body.” explains Tom Kalton owner of popular health blog bestmultivitamins.co.uk.

It is always important to understand however that supplements are not an alternative but merely a supportive measure to a healthy lifestyle. The benefits of a well rounded and nutritional diet, as well as sensible workouts that include proper stretching, warm ups and cool downs, are all equally as important and must not be forgotten.

As with any medical problem it is always advisable to conduct your doctor if you are experiencing joint issues.

Bestmultivitamins.co.uk specialises in providing informative and insightful information related to supplements, vitamins, multivitamins and other new health products on the market. Established in 2009 the site has become a trusted and cited resource within the industry.

Storm Warning For Hay Fever Sufferers

Hay fever sufferers could be about to experience the “perfect storm” in 2010, thanks to the gathering forces of Mother Nature, a leading UK pharmacy has warned.

The unusual combination of birch pollen levels peaking again this year, as part of a biannual cycle coinciding with a late spring, could cause mayhem for those with hay fever, according to The Co-operative Pharmacy.

Lisa McCreesh, Clinical Governance Pharmacist, at The Co-operative Pharmacy, says:“We are urging people to make sure they get effective treatment if they are suffering from common hay fever symptoms including a blocked or runny nose, sneezing and headache, as these could easily be confused with colds at this time of year.

“Most people associate hay fever with the summer months of May and June when grass pollen levels are high. But hay fever is also caused by being allergic to high levels of birch tree pollen in the atmosphere and other types of pollen including weeds and flowers.

“There are number of simple ways to manage hay fever – managing allergic triggers, suppressing the symptoms, or altering the way your immune system responds to the pollen spores. Avoiding pollen allergens can be difficult though, as the tiny spores are windborne and travel for miles on air currents.

“Keeping windows closed can help, particularly in the early mornings when pollen is being released, and in the evening, when the air cools and pollen begins to fall to the ground, as can wearing wraparound sunglasses.

“A range of medication is available for hay fever sufferers including syrups – commonly used for children – tablets and nasal sprays which can help you breathe more easily and unblock your nose. Eye drops can also help to relieve itchy or watery eyes and certain eye drops should be used at least a couple of weeks before symptoms actually start, to minimise discomfort.

“There are a number of treatments available without a prescription and your local pharmacy will be able to advise you on an appropriate remedy,” adds Lisa.

Report Says Young Women Becoming More Sexually Active

According to new figures released by the sexual health team at Lloydspharmacy*, today’s women have three times more sexual partners by the time they reach 24 than women of their grandmothers’ generation had by the same age.

The sexual health team’s results show that young women today have an average of 5.65 different sexual partners by the time they are 24. By contrast women of their grandmothers’ generation had an average of 1.67 and women of their mothers’ generation had 3.72 sexual partners by the same age.

Looking back over the decades since the War and the end of rations, the research shows that young women in the supposedly ‘Swinging Sixties’ had the least number of different sexual partners whilst young women in the ‘Noughties’ had the most.

Cancer Research UK statistics show that incidence rates of cervical cancer in women under the age of 25 have not decreased despite better screening**. Lloydspharmacy believes the increase in the number of sexual partners could be one reason why.

The last ten years have seen significant decreases in cervical cancer cases in women in older age groups but worryingly, diagnoses of the infection in women under the age of 25 have not followed the same trend**.

The community pharmacy chain is urging women of all age groups to get themselves protected against the human papilloma virus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection and one of the major causes of cervical cancer***.

“HPV infections are very common, especially in younger people”, said Clare Kerr, Lloydspharmacy’s head of sexual health. “If you are sexually active the cervical cancer vaccinations is one of the most effective ways to prevent infection with high risk forms of HPV.”

Women can receive cervical cancer vaccinations at 240 Lloydspharmacy branches throughout the UK. Other sexual health services available at Lloydpsharmacy branches or through the Online Doctor services on the website include genital Chlamydia and genital gonorrhea treatment.

Key research* insights for women between the ages of 18 and 24:
2000-2009 – women averaged over five different sexual partners, with 8% claiming to have had more than ten different partners
1990-1999 – women averaged under five different sexual partners
1980-1989 – 24% of women had three to five different sexual partners by the time they reached 24
1970-1979 – 24% of women had two to four different sexual partners by the age of 24
1960-1969 – almost 50 per cent had only one sexual partner by the age of 24

Resveratrol Sales Continue To Grow Despite Controversy

Whether you liked it or not 2009 was the year you probably found out about resveratrol. General awareness of resveratrol as a health supplement has been growing steadily over the last few years. When news magazine 60 Minutes profiled the anti-aging compound found in red wine in a January 2009 segment though, resveratrol suddenly shot to prominence. Sales of the supplements then took off, rivaling even acai berry in volume.

But then Oprah and Dr Oz filed suit (US District Court of New York Case # 09CV7297 Judge Batts) against 50 acai and resveratrol supplement marketers citing unlawful use of their name, and the resveratrol craze came to a screeching halt … at least, for a couple of months.

The Oprah/Dr Oz lawsuit remains in the news, but consumers appear undeterred and are picking right back up where they left off. So much so, the Nutrition Business Journal projects resveratrol sales in 2010 will be five times those of 2009.

“The thing that makes resveratrol different”, says Andrew Ekman of ResveratrolHabit.com, “is there is so much scientific research showing the positive effects resveratrol has on the body.” Indeed, a search for ‘resveratrol’ on PubMed, the government directory for scientific publications shows 564 listings for the year 2009. As these numbers indicate there is a lot of excitement in the scientific community about resveratrol.

Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, the company profiled in the 60 Minutes story continues to see positive results from the human trials it is running. Other researchers like Will Steward of the Leicester Royal Infirmary, who oversees research there, including human trials involving resveratrol for its ability to reduce the risk of cancer, are also getting positive results.

Steward has great hopes for resveratrol. In an interview with James Silver of Wired Magazine, he said of the human trials of resveratrol he recently conducted, “Resveratrol, up to five grammes daily, was well tolerated and safe, and blood markers of biological effect looked promising, showing that [resveratrol] could have effects on cells which would be valuable in preventing cancer.”

Though when asked about resveratrol supplements his comments struck a much more conservative tone, allowing only that, “there is no strong scientific evidence of anything that you can claim right now in terms of any potential beneficial clinical effect of resveratrol in humans.”

ResveratrolHabit.com is a site dedicated to keeping the public up to speed on the pros and cons of resveratrol supplements and news related to resveratrol. Yeadon Pharmacy Backs National No Smoking Day

A Yeadon pharmacy is getting behind next Wednesday’s national No Smoking Day (10 March) by taking up temporary residence at two local health centres in a bid to help members of the community stop smoking.

Following the success of last year’s event at Yeadon Health Centre, staff from The Co-operative Pharmacy in High Street will extend their advice sessions to offer help on stopping smoking at Silver Lane Surgery.

In partnership with the two health centres, staff will set up a stand in the South View Road and Suffolk Court clinics between 10:00am and 5:00pm.

Open to patients from all neighbouring surgeries, visitors will be given advice and counselling on giving up smoking and invited to use a smokerlyser, which measures the amount of carbon monoxide in the lungs and blood.

Patients will also be able to book appointments for the three-month smoking cessation programme and can receive free samples of nicotine patches and gum.

The Co-operative Pharmacy branch manager, Sageer Sharif, said: “Last year’s event was extremely popular with visitors and we think that this year’s national theme – ‘Break free’ – developed with smokers themselves, will have a powerful effect.

Pharmacy Warns On Sex Infections Danger

One of the UK’s leading pharmacies has issued a stark warning to older women about the dangers of unprotected sex – hot on the heels of a major national campaign to raise awareness of unplanned pregnancies among women over 35.

The Co-operative Pharmacy, which has nearly 800 branches, has seized on the “Conceivable?” campaign, launched by the Family Planning Association (FPA) last week, to highlight the fact that unplanned pregnancies are not the only issue facing older women – sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the 45-64 age group are also showing a worrying increase, with Chlamydia up 119%.1

“Any woman who thinks that these problems are faced only by teenagers must think again,” said Wendy Lee, Clinical Governance Pharmacist at The Co-operative Pharmacy.

“As more adults begin new relationships later on in life, they are not always thinking about the consequences of unprotected sex.”

Research also shows that nearly a third (32%) of 45-54 year olds believe that it is unlikely or very unlikely that they would be at risk of getting an STI if they had unprotected sex with a new partner or someone other than their current partner.2

Lee explains: “Some STIs don’t cause any symptoms, especially in women and if these go undetected this can cause more widespread health problems later on.

“There are a number of contraceptive options available and these generally suit all age ranges. However, male condoms provide the most effective protection against STIs.

“All options should be discussed with a healthcare professional and they will be able to provide the relevant support and guidance, including advice on emergency contraception.”

All branches of The Co-operative Pharmacy offer advice on contraception and STIs as well as many other prescription services and hayfever treatments.

Stevenage Co-operative Pharmacy Staff Help Man Who Falls On Ice

Stevenage Co-operative Pharmacy Staff Help Man Who Falls On Ice

After being alerted to the incident by a customer, supervisor, Sue Spicer, called an ambulance as the man had fallen over a low wall, injured his head and was losing blood.

Dispensing assistant, Sarah Day, calmly followed the instructions of the emergency services operator and alongside pharmacist, Hiral Patel, waited with the injured individual and made sure he was comfortable until the ambulance arrived.

As additional pharmacy staff looked after the Broadwater Crescent branch, Sarah and Hiral minimised the patient’s blood loss and provided blankets to keep him warm.

Hiral said: “We were just glad to have been on hand to help until the ambulance service took over. Most credit should go to Sarah who was extremely composed and efficient. It was a cold 20 minutes while we waited but then it was back to the branch and business as usual.”

Lloydspharmacy Unveil New Health Web Tool

Lloydspharmacy has launched a new web tool which allows people to work out how many of their work colleagues is carrying a sexually transmitted disease, drinks too much alcohol or is depressed.

The ‘Chances Are…’ Health Calculator, developed by community pharmacy chain Lloydspharmacy, is designed to stimulate debate and make health risks more relevant by applying nationally representative data to the workplace.

“People have become rather de-sensitised to national statistics,” said Andy Murdock, Governance and Pharmacy Relations Director of Lloydspharmacy. “When you hear that 15 per cent of the population is in danger of developing diabetes, it’s a bit meaningless, but when you discover, for example, in an office of 50 people, eight will be pre-diabetic and 10 of the men will experience some form of erectile dysfunction after turning 40, you’re more likely to sit up and take notice.

“That’s why we have launched this online tool. We hope it will be used in workplaces up and down the country, get people talking and encourage them to think about their own risk factors and what they can do to reduce their chances of developing lifestyle related diseases.”

The calculator asks visitors to provide information about the type of workplace they are employed in, along with the gender split and age profile of their workmates. It then raids its database to calculate how many colleagues have Chlamydia, how many men are likely to develop erectile dysfunction, how many are likely to suffer a stroke, how many have raised cholesterol, how many are hazardous drinkers and much more.

In many cases information is provided about the condition or the issue and guidance is provided about what can be done to reduce risk factors.

NAICONS and NexThera Transfer Rights Of NAI-107, A New Anti-MRSA Antibiotic, To Sentinella Pharmaceuticals

NAICONS (New Anti-Infectives CONSortium) and NexThera Biosciences, Italian companies focusing on the discovery and development of novel anti-infective drugs, today announced that they have entered into an agreement with Sentinella Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a US-based pharmaceutical company established by Care Capital LLC, a leading life sciences venture capital firm. Under the terms of the agreement, Sentinella has acquired all rights to NAICONS’ proprietary lantibiotic technology, including its lead product candidate NAI-107, in exchange for an upfront cash payment, future development and commercialization milestones, royalties on future product sales and an equity stake in Sentinella. Lantibiotics represent a new class of natural products with potent bactericidal activity against gram positive bacteria including the multi-drug resistant pathogens MRSA and VRE.

naicons.jpg (230×242)

“This agreement represents an important recognition of NAICONS’s ability to discover and characterize innovative antibiotics with a novel mechanism of action”, stated Stefano Donadio, NAICONS’ Chief Scientific Officer. “Our technology is based on fermentation products and includes strong expertise in manipulating antibiotic-producing bacterial strains. This agreement further supports NAICONS’ mission of rebuilding the strong and successful Italian tradition in the antibiotic field.”

“Our partnership with a US-based pharmaceutical company represents the best opportunity to rapidly and successfully advance a potential life-saving drug into clinical development in its largest market. It also gives NexThera international visibility for developing additional anti-infective compounds”, said Daniela Jabes, NexThera’s Chief Executive Officer. “This agreement represents the first tangible result of the synergy between NAICONS’s discovery engine and NexThera’s development focus.”

nexthera.jpg (288×167)

“We are delighted to be entering into this transaction with NAICONS and NexThera,” said David Ramsay, a Director of Sentinella. “The principals behind NAICONS and NexThera have a successful track record in the discovery and development of anti-infective products, including rifamycins, penems, dalbavancin and ramoplanin , and we hope to build on that success to develop and commercialize an important novel class of antibiotics for the treatment of multi-drug resistant nosocomial infections.”

Every year several million people worldwide acquire infections while in hospitals, with significant mortality rates. Continuing a trend that began several years ago, it is estimated that approximately seventy percent of hospital infections are currently caused by pathogens resistant to at least one class of existing antibiotics. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) are among the most dangerous nosocomial pathogens.

According to the Infectious Diseases Society of America, drug resistant bacteria represent a significant economic burden because of the need for costly drugs, extended hospital stays and lost working days. The annual cost of infections by drug-resistant pathogens has been estimated as nearly $5 billion in the U.S. alone.

Lloydspharmacy Wishes Customers A Flu-Less Christmas

Lloydspharmacy has announced that it has cut the price of its winter flu vaccinations by more than half price to encourage more people to protect themselves against the virus.

Recent research carried out by Lloydspharmacy found that take up for the vaccine has fallen this year. This could be due to a misguided belief that the swine flu jab will protect against winter flu**. However, price may also be a factor as people cut back during the recession. At £5, the Lloydspharmacy winter flu vaccine is now the cheapest on the high street compared to Asda and Tesco which are both priced at £8.00.

Chris Frost, pharmacist and director at Lloydspharmacy, said: “Winter flu can be debilitating and in some cases lead to very serious health issues. By making the vaccines available in our pharmacies across the country we’ve already improved access. Now they’re even more affordable we hope to have removed another barrier to people protecting themselves. The last thing anyone wants is to have flu over Christmas.”

Seasonal flu is responsible for the deaths of about 8,000 people in the UK a year and tends to affect the more vulnerable or elderly people. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control forecast that the swine flu and seasonal flu strains could each claim 40,000 lives across Europe this winter.

People over the age of 65 qualify for a free NHS seasonal flu vaccination as do people with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Others are able to get themselves protected on the high street. Lloydspharmacy offers a seasonal flu vaccination service in 260 of its pharmacies.

Lloydspharmacy Warns Not To Rely On Swine Flu Jab To Protect Against Winter Flu

Lloydspharmacy has warned that the number of people protecting themselves against seasonal flu has fallen this year, possibly the result of a misguided belief that the swine flu jab will protect against winter flu.

As of 6th November there had only been a 54% uptake in people aged 65 and over, and only 27% uptake by people aged 55 – 65 to date, of the seasonal flu vaccine. Opinium Research conducted for Lloydspharmacy among 2007 UK adults 4 – 6th November 2009. This is a big reduction compared with the 73.5% uptake in 2008 by over the 65s and 73.9% in 2007 (The Fifty-sixth World Health Assembly).

According to research conducted by Lloydspharmacy almost 40% of people wrongly believe that the swine flu vaccine will also protect them against seasonal flu. Even more worryingly, more than half (52%) of the over 65s – one of the groups most vulnerable to winter flu – thought they would be protected against both strains if they had had the swine flu vaccination.

People over the age of 65 qualify for a free NHS seasonal flu vaccination as do people with conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, chronic liver disease, lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment) or removal of the spleen, or if they are a resident of a nursing or residential home. Anyone who is the main carer for an elderly or disabled person and whose wellbeing may be put at risk if the carer falls ill, is also eligible for a free vaccination from their GP.

Others who are not eligible for free NHS treatment can still have an online consultation with a doctor and be vaccinated at high street pharmacies for a fee of£5, with Lloydspharmacy offering a seasonal flu vaccination service in 260 of its pharmacies.

Seasonal flu is responsible for the deaths of about 8,000 people in the UK a year and tends to affect the more vulnerable or elderly people. Last week the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control forecast that the swine flu and seasonal flu strains could claim 40,000 lives each across Europe this winter.

The World Health Organisation has urged national governments to put in place plans to vaccinate at least 75 per cent of people most at risk of seasonal flu by 2010.

“Whilst there is still time for vulnerable people to get themselves protected before late November (when the Winter flu season reaches its peak) we would certainly expect to see a higher uptake by this time of year,” said Clare Kerr, head of clinical services at Lloydspharmacy.

At a time when melamine-contamination has received global attention, Catalent Pharma Solutions continues its legacy of innovation by rapidly developing new FDA guidance-compliant tests for trace amounts of key contaminants in food and medicine. Incidents of melamine contamination in milk products, baby formula, dairy and non-dairy products manufactured in China have been widely reported, leading to product recalls and increased inspections by the FDA.

The current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) regulations require that all components (i.e. ingredients or raw materials) be tested before they are released for use in the manufacture or preparation of drug products (21 CFR 211.84). It is critical that all manufacturers determine whether they are using an at risk component for melamine contamination to manufacture or prepare a drug product.

In response to the FDA’s new guidance titled “Pharmaceutical Components at Risk for Melamine Contamination,” Catalent has successfully qualified a method for determining if suspect excipients are contamination-free to within 2.5 parts per million. The method is based on that provided by the FDA (Laboratory Information Bulletin No. 4423 “GC-MS Screen for the Presence of Melamine, Ammeline, Ammelide, and Cyanuric Acid”).

Catalent is now able to provide its customers successfully qualified and validated limits tests for trace levels of melamine, ammeline, ammelide, and cyanuric acid in lactose.

Melamine is a compound made of carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen and is typically combined with formaldehyde to produce a durable and moldable plastic that is fire and heat resistant. Trace amounts of melamine have recently been discovered to be toxic to dogs, cats, pigs, and chickens by veterinary scientists after kidney or renal failure occurred due to their food being contaminated with the chemical.

“Catalent is proud to have satisfied the demanding regulatory standards the US FDA has provided for detecting melamine,” said Kent Payne, Vice President and General Manager of Catalent’s Respiratory, Analytical and Biotechnology Services business. “Detecting trace levels of melamine in food and medicinal products at these levels is a challenging process, but is key to help avoid future public health crises. In order to support this critical public health need, Catalent can expedite this testing and provide results within 48 hours from receipt of samples

Catalent To Present Webinar On Stabilities Studies In Pharmaceutical Development

Catalent Pharma Solutions will host a free Webinar featuring Senior Manager, Wei Pan, Ph.D. RAC and Kathy Waddle, Director, Stability QC Biology. The one-hour Webinar will cover stability studies as a critical part of the drug development process and the vital role they play for drug product marketing approval. The Webinar, titled “Stability Studies in Pharmaceutical Development,” will be held on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 2 p.m. (EST). To register for the Webinar please visit: https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/280747146.

The presentation will address the principles and practices of stability studies in the drug development process. Pan and Waddle will discuss the framework of the FDA cGMP guidelines as expressed in 21CFR211. Additionally, the Webinar will provide a comprehensive review of ICH and WHO stability guidelines by discussing the strategy used in stability protocols designed to support global registration.

Stability studies are conducted at all phases of the drug development cycle for different purposes with the ultimate goal of having a stable product on the market. During development, stability studies are conducted to support the formulation development and safety and efficacy claims of investigational new drugs. At registration, they are conducted to ascertain the quality and shelf-life of the drug product in their intended packaging configuration. After approval, the stability studies are conducted to ensure the quality of production and to support site or other changes to the product.
