Eye Care – The Next Big Thing In Kerala’s Medical Travel Industry

Medical travel industry in Kerala is all set to broaden its scope through micro cataract surgery and support services for cataract patients. It is considered as the next big thing after Ayurveda and dentistry in the domain of medical travel in Kerala. Micro Cataract Surgery is gaining the attention of cataract patients. Apart from its efficiency, after 24 hours of this surgery, patients are able to return to their normal life. And what more; this quick recovery period inspires many to opt for holidays in God’s Own Country.

Interestingly, Mulamoottil Eye Hospital (MEH), one of the pioneers in eye care is offering micro cataract surgery at Asia’s lowest cost – INR 30,000 (US $700). Besides the affordable cost of the surgery, MEH offers free accommodation for two days.

“Unlike conventional cataract surgery, the advanced micro cataract surgery at Mulamoottil Eye Hospital uses 0.9 mm tip inside the eye. Patients enjoy full recovery after 24 hours, enabling them to take head bath, go for office work, drive car, apply medicine on their own and even take a flight,” says Dr. Ashley Thomas Jacob, Medical Director of MEH, which has a tradition of 125 years in eye care.

Mulamoottil Eye Hospital is the largest eye hospital in Kerala and is located at Kozhencherry, a small town in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, India. MEH is also the pioneers in Customized Cataract Surgery. The hospital also offers precise surgeries for presbyopia, myopia (short-sight) diabetic eye disease etc. with shortest post-surgical recovery period. It also conducts research and training activities in ophthalmology.

By virtue of its location, Mulamoottil Eye Hospital is close to some of the captivating travel destinations in Kerala that include Kumarakom, Alappuzha, Fort Kochi, Munnar, Periyar etc. And this makes patients from outside Kerala and non-resident Indians to club holidaying in Kerala, popular as ‘God’s Own Country’ with their visit for eye treatment; especially after undergoing micro cataract and customized cataract surgeries.

Royal Wedding Sparks Boom In Brides-To-Be Booking ‘Ring Bling’ Treatments At The Harley Medical Group

In the wake of ‘that’ picture of Prince William and his bride-to-be showing off her beautiful hand and even more stunning engagement ring, brides are turning their attention to their hands – to make sure their pinkies are perfect for the wedding album. The UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, The Harley Medical Group, is reporting a 50% surge in women aged 25-35 coming in for non-surgical treatments on the hands.

Bernadette Harte, Non-Surgical Specialist at The Harley Medical Group, comments: “We have seen a huge increase in recently engaged women coming in to our clinics and having treatments on their hands. Most have said that having seen the picture of Kate Middleton’s stunning hand they want to make sure they have immaculate and youthful hands to show off their ‘ring bling’.”

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments such as Aesthera PPx, which can also be used on the face, neck and chest areas, are increasingly popular for use on hands and arms. Aesthera PPx is a highly effective treatment, which rejuvenates the skin by destroying unwanted red or brown pigment and unsightly veins. The treatment action breaks down melanin within the skin, which the body naturally and safely absorbs, leaving it looking immediately more youthful and healthy.

Jane Usher, aged 29, is a patient at The Harley Medical Group who got engaged during the same month as William and Kate, comments: “When I saw Kate Middleton’s beautifully manicured young looking hand, showing off her engagement ring, I felt very self-conscious. Even though I am the same age as Kate, due to sun damage my hands look older than they should. After having Aesthera PPx at The Harley Medical Group my skin looks much fresher and healthy.”

Failure to Investigate Cosmetic Surgeon Can Cost You Your Life

A recent death illustrates the importance of investigating your cosmetic surgeon, says Dr. Mark Scheinberg from the Center for Cosmetic Laser Gynecology. Lidvian Zelaya, 35, underwent a procedure for abdominal liposuction and buttocks injections at the Strax Rejuvenation Clinic in south Florida.

She was rushed to the hospital, but died only a few hours after the start of the procedure. Investigations of public records by ABC News reveal that Dr. Roger L. Gordon, Zelaya’s plastic surgeon at Strax, has had 20 lawsuits filed against him since 2004. He was placed on probation by the Maryland Board of Physicians for undisclosed reasons and he had his staff privileges terminated by the Florida Medical Center. The Sun Sentinal revealed that Gordon was disciplined by the state in connection with two deaths in 2004.

“If you’re choosing a plastic surgeon, you want to do your homework,” says Scheinberg. “You’re entrusting them with your body – and your life. You need a doctor you can have confidence in.”

Scheinberg has been board certified in obstetrics and gynecology since 1981 and has performed over 10,000 surgical procedures. Scheinberg has received 100s of hours of training with Professor Adam Ostrzenski, M.D. Ph.D., a pioneer in safe, effectivevaginal reconstruction and cosmetic vaginal surgery.

Zalaya’s cause of death is under investigation, but she was declared healthy enough for surgery by doctors at the Strax Clinic. “I think it’s an inherent conflict of interest if you are getting screened by the surgeon who wants to do the procedure,” said Spencer Aronfeld, a malpractice attorney retained by Zalaya’s husband, Osvaldo Vargas.

Vargas has been publicizing the case as a way of warning others to investigate their cosmetic surgeons. In particular, he is urging patients to get a second pre-operative examination by an independent doctor. He said that Zelaya chose the Strax Clinic because she got a good deal on the procedure.

“You don’t want to rush into this kind of decision or select the doctor who offers you the lowest cost,” notes Scheinberg. “You want someone who has a long record of success with the procedure you are getting. Complaints and disciplinary actions against doctors are part of the public record. Patients can and should look this information up.”

The Exercise Myths

There are still many popular misconceptions about how to lose weight or tone up stomachs, bottoms and thighs – with exercise routines left over from the days of ‘go for the burn’ aerobics and Jane Fonda-style videos.

Sit-ups have traditionally been thought of the best way to tone stomach muscles – but this might not be the case. Firstly, lots of sit-ups or crunches alone won’t tone a flabby belly – you need to combine any exercise with other exercises as well as eating a balanced diet. Sit-ups also target the most superficial ‘six-pack’ core muscles, but too many of these will cause the tummy to bulge out, leading to a pot belly.

Those trying to lose weight often believe that exercising for longer periods of time will lead to increased weight loss. But exercising hard for a long time will produce excessive amounts of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol, which begin to break down muscle tissue.

High-intensity exercise is good for heart health, but not effective for fat loss. Studies have shown the best way to burn fat is by carrying out moderate to light-intensity exercise, such as a brisk walk.

Those who are finding it hard to shift stubborn fat, should come for a consultation with an expert surgeon at The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group offer a range of cosmetic procedures to help people achieve the perfect body, including tummy tucks and liposuction, as well as weight loss surgery, including gastric bypasses, balloons and bands.

David Ross, Chief executive of The Hospital Group, which has 19 clinics across the UK said: “People who come for a consultation have often been trying to beat the bulge through various diets and exercise regimes for years, but many do not have access to knowledge to make a lasting difference.

Overweight Struggle With Weight Loss Because Of Heightened Sense Of Smell

New research has found that some overweight people have a greater sense of smell for food which may cause them to struggle with diets and weight loss.

Carried out by the University of Portsmouth , the study found that those who were overweight, or had a high BMI, had a far heightened sense of smell for food compared with slim people.

Volunteers took part in the study where they were asked to join in with a series of mini experiments that tested their smelling ability.

The results revealed that most people are better at detecting food odours just after they had eaten rather than when they were hungry with experts citing this as one of the reasons many people continue eating long after they are full up.

Scientists believe this new research could help explain why some people struggle to stay slim or stick to a strict diet.

Lead researcher Dr Stafford, said: “It could be speculated that for those with a propensity to gain weight, their higher sense of smell for food related odours might actually play a more active role in food intake.

“Hopefully this research will stimulate more work in this area with the potential to help those who struggle with their weight and those who treat people with weight problems.”

Those who are worried about being overweight should book a consultation with an expert bariatric surgeon at The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group is the UK ‘s biggest provider of weight loss surgery, including gastric bands, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “Many overweight people struggle with their food intake and often find themselves in a vicious cycle of over eating.

South Florida Dentist Warns about Holiday Foods

When most people think of foods that can harm your teeth, they think of candy. “However, there are a lot of other foods to avoid,” says Dr. Charles Nottingham, a cosmetic dentist at Smile South Florida. “Unfortunately, many of them are popular during the holidays.”

Sugar: Sugar, of course, is the #1 culprit in causing cavities. The worst offenders are sticky foods like lollipops, hard candies, and gum drops. They give you a double whammy. Not only are they high in sugar, but they also stick to your teeth for a long time after you eat. Surprisingly chocolate is less like to be a culprit because it binds with fat molecules and doesn’t stick to teeth as well as other candies. If you do eat a lot of sugary foods, try to do so at mealtimes when increased saliva can wash sugar off teeth.

Starches: “Bread and potatoes are very popular parts of traditional holiday meals,” points out Dr. Nottingham. “But, the refined flour in white bread and the starch in potatoes are essentially sugars and so will affect your teeth the same way refined sugar does. So cut back on those rolls, mashed potatoes, holiday cookies, and potato chips.”

Alcohol: An occasional drink at a holiday party is okay. But excess alcohol wears away tooth enamel, discoloring teeth and making them vulnerable to cavities.

The good news is there are a lot of foods that are healthy for your teeth as well. “In general most fruits and vegetables help strengthen your teeth – as do a lot of foods containing protein,” says Dr. Nottingham.

Fruits and Vegetables: Any fruit or veggie with a lot of fiber will help out. Onions, celery, kiwis, parsley, and apples are all singled out by experts as being particularly good for your teeth. So look for holiday recipes that include these foods.

Dairy Products: In general cheese, yogurt, milk, and other dairy products (without added sugar), are good choices for the teeth. They help generate saliva which washes sugars off the teeth and they contain calcium, which strengthens them.

Florida Gynecologist Rebuts Misconceptions About Cosmetic Procedures

Cosmetic gynecology is a burgeoning field with a growing number of practitioners and patients all over the U.S. However, some doctors expressed concern about the field in a recent issue of OB.Gyn News. Many worried that such procedures aren’t medically indicated, while others were concerned about negatively affecting a woman’s self-image by suggesting that her private parts might be unattractive.

However, Dr. Mark Scheinberg, a South Florida cosmetic gynecologist from the Center for Cosmetic Laser Gynecology, knows these criticisms are unfounded. “I have seen hundreds of patients in my practice, “says Dr. Scheinberg. “Many of them have functional concerns, such as pain, difficulty with urine retention, or diminished sexual satisfaction. Aging, childbirth, and other causes can result in some distressing changes in the vulva area. After surgery, they are very happy to have these functions return to normal.”

Other critics have voiced concern that gynecologists’ straying into purely cosmetic treatments is a inappropriate. However, as Dr. Scheinberg points out, “These procedures are no different than breast enhancement or tummy tucks which are performed for cosmetic reasons. Enhancing your appearance is a valid choice for women. It can improve their self-image and quality of life.”

Ultimately, Dr. Scheinberg notes, it’s an issue of giving women choices. “I believe that women should have cosmetic gynecology options,” he says. “It’s not up to me to tell a woman whether she should or shouldn’t be happy with the appearance of the vulvar area. It’s the patient’s choice.”

The Harley Medical Group Announces Rise In Breast Surgery Procedures In Ireland

The Harley Medical Group, Ireland’s leading cosmetic surgery provider, has revealed breast surgery is top of the ops for the 23rd year running and the fastest growing sector of cosmetic surgery. The Harley Medical Group has seen a positive increase on last year’s enquiries. While breast reductions are becoming more popular with an increasing number of Irish women reducing their breast size in order to achieve a more slender figure, breast augmentation continues to be the most popular procedure performed at THMG’s Dublin clinic.

Pauline Hughes, Dublin Clinic Manager for The Harley Medical Group commented: “There is a noticeable upward trend for post-breast feeding breast augmentation procedures. 31 % of breast implant procedures performed at the THMG clinic over the past 12 months have been for women that come into this bracket. In the previous 12 months, this figure was in the region of 24%.

“The age profile of women presenting for post-breast feeding breast augmentation is late 20s to mid 30s years. This suggests that women are waiting until their final child (typically after 2 or 3 children) before choosing to ‘replace what they once had’, rather than opting for unnatural looking enhancements with larger breast implants.”

Typically, 7 years ago, 46% of Breast Augmentation patients went up three cup sizes whereas over the last 12 months THMG’s most popular size increase was 2 cup sizes. Breast Surgery remains the most popular of all cosmetic surgery procedures, and it accounted for 48% of all procedures undertaken by The Harley Medical Group in the last 12 months. Irish attitudes have changed dramatically from 7 years ago, as women are now happy to show-off their surgery. Over 65% of Breast Augmentation patients are between 25-35 years old with the balance mostly post breast feeding.

South Florida Cosmetic Dentist Notes How Oral Health Affects the Whole Body

People tend to think of beautiful straight teeth as a purely cosmetic concern – a luxury rather than a necessity. However, teeth that are crooked, stained, or have other problems can cause physiological problems in the rest of the body or can be an indicator of other health problems.

“Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean properly, potentially leading to tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss,” notes Dr. Charles Nottingham, a Miami dentist and Fort Lauderdale dentist.”A bad bite can also cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, poor speech, and excessive stress on the jaw bone and gum tissue.”

Poor bites can also influence chewing and swallowing and food selection – leading to nutritional problems. Pain in the jaw or teeth can lead to pain in the head, neck, shoulders, or elsewhere in the body. Oral pain often leads to diminished activity, lost work days, depression, sleep problems, and missed school for children.

“In addition, problems with your teeth can be an indicator of whole-body health issues,” points out Dr. Nottingham, a South Florida cosmetic dentist.”Scientific research indicates a link between gum disease and many other overall health problems including: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, premature births and many more.”

Sometimes teeth can reveal a previously unknown health condition. Conditions that can be detected in the mouth include diabetes (causesgum infections), acid reflux (teeth are much more prone to decay), some auto-immune disorders (the soft tissue in the mouth and salivary glands can be affected), liver diseases (the soft tissue in the mouth is jaundiced) and many more.

The Harley Medical Group Sees Steady Increase In Breast Reduction Procedures

The Harley Medical Group reports that it has seen a steady increase in breast reduction procedures in the UK. With breast surgery still top of the ops in the cosmetic surgery field, wanting to appear slimmer is an increasingly common motivator for women having breast reductions. A smaller looking frame helps towards the perception of an individual looking slimmer.

Lisa Littlehales, Specialist Nurse Councillor at The Harley Medical Group said: “We are seeing an increase in the current female generation opting for breast reductions. The average dress size for women these days is a 16 and many women have at least a size D bust. By decreasing chest size it helps women to look and feel thinner and also helps them in their quest to get fit and lose weight. Large breasts can cause back and neck troubles and also restricts women when trying to exercise – oversized and heavy breasts can be a huge inconvenience on women’s lives.”

Katherine Richards, breast reduction case study at The Harley Medical Group commented: “I suffered from terrible back and neck problems due to the sheer weight of my size H breasts. It was awful because a real passion of mine was running but I would have to wear two extra supportive sports bras and would often feel embarrassed when going to the gym. Since having surgery a weight has literally been lifted – I am now a manageable D-cup which makes running much more comfortable. I also have the confidence to wear a bikini on the beach which I could never ever do before.”

Breast reduction surgery usually takes three hours to complete, depending on the size of the breasts. The operation is carried out under general anaesthetic, and patients stay in hospital for one to two nights. Breast reduction patients are required to wear a supportive bra for up to three months following surgery to keep the breasts well supported whilst healing takes place and ensure the best possible results.

The Harley Medical Group Report Surge In Liposuction Procedures

The Harley Medical Group has reported thousands of enquiries for liposuction over the last month as a wave of what is termed ‘beach envy’ – jealousy of other women’s bodies – hit holidaymakers.

The rise has been driven largely by 30-plus women, with clinic staff reporting patient feedback that suggests Victoria Beckham has the most coveted star stomach. Abdominoplasty surgery enquiries are also up 32% over the last two months with some patients even taking their summer holidays as ‘surgery breaks’, using the time off to recover before returning to work rejuvenated.

Liz Dale, Director of The Harley Medical Group said: “You can get liposuction on various areas of the body, not just the stomach area. It can be used to target problem areas such as the hips, buttocks, inner and outer thighs, knees and double chins.

“Many of our patients come back from a holiday with a resolution to make a change to their life. With pictures of celebrities soaking up the sun in bikinis hitting the newspapers every day, British women are being spurred into taking action.”

Liposuction is performed under a general anaesthetic and takes one to two hours. A very small incision is used to insert the cannula to extract the fat and sometimes this is closed with a stitch or dissolvable suture. Following the operation, patients are required to rest for 48 hours and avoid bending and heavy lifting. Patients must wear a support garment until advised otherwise by their consultant.

The Harley Medical Group Reports In Increase In Bald Patch Treatments

The Harley Medical Group has reported demand from male patients for laser rejuvenation treatments is up +93% over the last quarter, across its 30 clinics.

Laser rejuvenation treatments now account for 11% of all non-surgical treatments carried out during June, July and August at the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery group. More unusual requests received this year are for skin regeneration treatments on receding hairlines, including laser treatment and chemical peels to reduce the appearance of aging sun spots.

Laura Marshall, specialist nurse counsellor at The Harley Medical Group, said: “The skin on the scalp is delicate and when not protected by hair or high factor sun cream is prone to burning which can cause dark patches, spots and wrinkles to form. Coming to terms with a receding hairline has always been a challenge for a man, but to then suffer the effects of sun damage on the balding area adds insult to injury. Rejuvenation treatments can help minimise the visible signs of aging skin.”

Liz Dale, Director, The Harley Medical Group added: “We’re not talking big numbers of bald–patch treatments but the fact we’re getting more enquiries does demonstrate how men are taking non-surgical treatments increasingly seriously as a cosmetic solution. With successful, high profile men, like Simon Cowell, openly talking about their cosmetic regimes it’s a subject that has become more acceptable for men to tackle.”

The Harley Medical Group Reports Boom In Pre-Wedding Breast Enlargement

The Harley Medical Group has reported that, with the wedding season at its peak, there has also been a corresponding significant rise in breast augmentation surgery.

Determined to look perfect on their big day, brides are taking the plunge and booking in for a boob job for additional confidence on their big day. As a result, breast enlargement is top of the ops this summer across the Group’s 30 clinics in the UK and Ireland.

Liz Dale, Director, The Harley Medical Group, commented, “The big wedding is certainly in vogue in 2010, so pre-wedding procedures are right back on the agenda, with the lucky couples determined to have a picture perfect record of their special day.

“With the average wedding costing nearly £20,000, patients see cosmetic procedures as a long term investment, with the effects of plastic surgery lasting well beyond the big day itself. The average pre-nup nip budget is around £4,000 and is favoured by those plumping for long engagements – we recommend patients allow a good four to six months recovery time to ensure the best results on their wedding day.”

Lisa Littlehales, Nurse Counsellor and Clinic Manager at The Harley Medical Group commented, “The split of brides to grooms having pre-wedding surgery is around 75% to 25%. For women their figure is definitely the focus – it is all about the dress, after all. The men we see are frequently looking to correct a sporting injury, so things like having rhinoplasty on a broken nose.”

Harley Medical Group Reports Laser Hair Removal On The Up This Summer

With the recent bursts of scorching weather, The Harley Medical Group has seen an 23% increase in people grooming themselves ready to hit the beaches at home and abroad this summer.

Laser Hair Removal, is the most popular summer-time non-surgical procedure with men and women across The Harley Medical Group’s 30 UK clinics.

Liz Dale, Director at Harley Medical Group, commented: “People of all ages opt for laser hair removal because it’s such an effective and convenient treatment. It’s particularly popular with women and men in their late twenties through to their forties, as they have more disposable cash to invest in themselves. The most popular areas for the treatment are London, Brighton and Leeds.

“While we do see a spike in treatment bookings between February and August, as people get ready for the beach, it’s our most popular non-surgical treatment so we have high demand all year round. This summer’s sunny warm weather has caused this increase in enquiry as more patients are having the opportunity to wear swimwear and skimpy summer clothing.”

The Harley Medical Group uses the Alexandrite (Class 4) laser designed to work on lighter skin, the YAG laser for darker skin and the Isolaz which can be used on all types of skin. All lasers penetrate deep into the dermis and as the heat builds up the hair follicles are disabled in the active growth phase, enabling effective hair removal.

An invisible laser beam zaps the hair follicle by seeking out the dark pigmentation in the hair then directing the laser beam at its root to destroy it. It’s proven to give permanent hair reduction. You’ll need a course of treatments to remove all hair permanently though because the laser can only kill active growing hairs. The actual session will only take around twenty minutes but for permanent hair removal you’ll need to have 6-8 sessions.

Florida Surgeon Describes the Three Most Dangerous Trends in Cosmetic Gynecology

“The vagina is a very complex organ, with complex nerves and muscles,” observes Dr. Mark Scheinberg, a Florida cosmetic gynecologist. “Cosmetic gynecology is a fast growing profession, so, patients need to protect themselves by doing their research about which procedure they need and which practitioner they select.”

There are three dangerous trends in cosmetic gynecology today:

• One Size Fits All

– There are surgeons who perform a florida labiaplasty or vaginal rejuvenation only one way. But, removing too much skin could result in an unnatural appearance, which many patients dislike.
– Every patient’s body is different and each patient desires different results.

• High Volume/Low Cost

– Many surgeons advertise a wide variety of procedures, but this can mean the doctor doesn’t take the time to produce good results.
– A low cost may mean that the doctor is skipping some important steps.
– Be careful when it comes to your private areas.

• One-stop shop

– Some plastic surgeons will offer vaginal rejuvenation and labiaplasty alongside face lifts, breast enhancement, Botox, and other procedures.
– But, these generalists often don’t have much training in such specialized procedures.

When choosing a cosmetic gynecologist, look for the following:

• Experience: How many surgical, gynecological, and cosmetic gynecological procedures has the doctor performed? How long have they been practicing and what is their reputation?

• Advanced training: Look for specific vaginal rejuvenation training – especially advanced training with leaders in the field.

South Florida Cosmetic Dentist Describes Dangers of Neglecting Dental Treatment

The Surgeon General’s first report on oral health observes that dental cavities are the most common childhood health problem – 5 times more common than asthma. More than 50% of children ages 5 to 9 have at least one filling.

One of South Florida’s best cosmetic dentists, Dr. Charles Nottingham, observes “We lack adequate access to dental care for many Americans. For every American with dental insurance, there are three more who don’t have it.”

Poor children are two times more likely to suffer from cavities than their more affluent peers. More than 51 million school hours are lost to dental-related illnesses and the corresponding pain can cause problems with learning, eating, and speaking. “We have the technology and know-how to ensure that everyone can improve their oral health, but not everyone has access to it,” notes Dr. Nottingham, one of South Florida’s best dentists.

Adults don’t fare much better. Fewer than two-thirds visit a dentist in a given year. Americans lose more than 164 million hours of work time each year from dental disease or dental visits. Severe periodontal disease affects 14% of adults 45-54. “Smoking and other forms of tobacco use are big contributors to poor oral health,” says Dr. Nottingham, a cosmetic dentist. “Yet many Americans remain unaware of that.”

“Oral care is an integral part of overall health care. Dental visits can prevent a number of problems – such as infections – which, left untreated, can spread to the rest of your body,” points out cosmetic dentistry specialist Dr. Nottingham.
