South Florida Dentist Warns about Holiday Foods

When most people think of foods that can harm your teeth, they think of candy. “However, there are a lot of other foods to avoid,” says Dr. Charles Nottingham, a cosmetic dentist at Smile South Florida. “Unfortunately, many of them are popular during the holidays.”

Sugar: Sugar, of course, is the #1 culprit in causing cavities. The worst offenders are sticky foods like lollipops, hard candies, and gum drops. They give you a double whammy. Not only are they high in sugar, but they also stick to your teeth for a long time after you eat. Surprisingly chocolate is less like to be a culprit because it binds with fat molecules and doesn’t stick to teeth as well as other candies. If you do eat a lot of sugary foods, try to do so at mealtimes when increased saliva can wash sugar off teeth.

Starches: “Bread and potatoes are very popular parts of traditional holiday meals,” points out Dr. Nottingham. “But, the refined flour in white bread and the starch in potatoes are essentially sugars and so will affect your teeth the same way refined sugar does. So cut back on those rolls, mashed potatoes, holiday cookies, and potato chips.”

Alcohol: An occasional drink at a holiday party is okay. But excess alcohol wears away tooth enamel, discoloring teeth and making them vulnerable to cavities.

The good news is there are a lot of foods that are healthy for your teeth as well. “In general most fruits and vegetables help strengthen your teeth – as do a lot of foods containing protein,” says Dr. Nottingham.

Fruits and Vegetables: Any fruit or veggie with a lot of fiber will help out. Onions, celery, kiwis, parsley, and apples are all singled out by experts as being particularly good for your teeth. So look for holiday recipes that include these foods.

Dairy Products: In general cheese, yogurt, milk, and other dairy products (without added sugar), are good choices for the teeth. They help generate saliva which washes sugars off the teeth and they contain calcium, which strengthens them.

Florida Gynecologist Rebuts Misconceptions About Cosmetic Procedures

Cosmetic gynecology is a burgeoning field with a growing number of practitioners and patients all over the U.S. However, some doctors expressed concern about the field in a recent issue of OB.Gyn News. Many worried that such procedures aren’t medically indicated, while others were concerned about negatively affecting a woman’s self-image by suggesting that her private parts might be unattractive.

However, Dr. Mark Scheinberg, a South Florida cosmetic gynecologist from the Center for Cosmetic Laser Gynecology, knows these criticisms are unfounded. “I have seen hundreds of patients in my practice, “says Dr. Scheinberg. “Many of them have functional concerns, such as pain, difficulty with urine retention, or diminished sexual satisfaction. Aging, childbirth, and other causes can result in some distressing changes in the vulva area. After surgery, they are very happy to have these functions return to normal.”

Other critics have voiced concern that gynecologists’ straying into purely cosmetic treatments is a inappropriate. However, as Dr. Scheinberg points out, “These procedures are no different than breast enhancement or tummy tucks which are performed for cosmetic reasons. Enhancing your appearance is a valid choice for women. It can improve their self-image and quality of life.”

Ultimately, Dr. Scheinberg notes, it’s an issue of giving women choices. “I believe that women should have cosmetic gynecology options,” he says. “It’s not up to me to tell a woman whether she should or shouldn’t be happy with the appearance of the vulvar area. It’s the patient’s choice.”

Florida cosmetic gynecologist Dr. Mark Scheinberg, a member of the Ultimate Makeovers Team, will participate in the Safewalk Run 5K on October 30th. The 12th annual Safewalk benefits Women in Distress, a non-profit group that provides safe shelter and critical services to families affected by domestic violence.

The event is timed and awards are given to top finishers as well as incentives for top fundraisers. All walkers and runners are asked to raise $200; the walk’s goal is to raise $100,000. The event will be attended by the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders and organizers expect more than 1,200 people to participate.

Dr. Scheinberg is running in the race and he has also helped to sponsor the event. “At the Ultimate Makeover Team we want to use our resources to help less fortunate individuals and the community as a whole,” said Dr. Scheinberg, a Florida cosmetic gynecology provider.”Sponsoring the Safewalk helps to fulfill both goals.”

Dr. Scheinberg is part of the Ultimate Makeover Program, in which Florida’s best doctors and health practitioners go beyond changing people’s looks to transforming their lives. The Ultimate Team will help the less fortunate through community activism and fundraising corporate partnerships as well as through cosmetic procedures.

The makeover may include cosmetic dentistry, plastic surgery, laser eye surgery, and personal training. Makeover recipients will be chosen from local charities and the community. South Florida Cosmetic Dentist Notes How Oral Health Affects the Whole Body

People tend to think of beautiful straight teeth as a purely cosmetic concern – a luxury rather than a necessity. However, teeth that are crooked, stained, or have other problems can cause physiological problems in the rest of the body or can be an indicator of other health problems.

“Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean properly, potentially leading to tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss,” notes Dr. Charles Nottingham, a Miami dentist and Fort Lauderdale dentist.”A bad bite can also cause abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, poor speech, and excessive stress on the jaw bone and gum tissue.”

Poor bites can also influence chewing and swallowing and food selection – leading to nutritional problems. Pain in the jaw or teeth can lead to pain in the head, neck, shoulders, or elsewhere in the body. Oral pain often leads to diminished activity, lost work days, depression, sleep problems, and missed school for children.

“In addition, problems with your teeth can be an indicator of whole-body health issues,” points out Dr. Nottingham, a South Florida cosmetic dentist.”Scientific research indicates a link between gum disease and many other overall health problems including: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, premature births and many more.”

Sometimes teeth can reveal a previously unknown health condition. Conditions that can be detected in the mouth include diabetes (causesgum infections), acid reflux (teeth are much more prone to decay), some auto-immune disorders (the soft tissue in the mouth and salivary glands can be affected), liver diseases (the soft tissue in the mouth is jaundiced) and many more.

Florida Surgeon Describes the Three Most Dangerous Trends in Cosmetic Gynecology

“The vagina is a very complex organ, with complex nerves and muscles,” observes Dr. Mark Scheinberg, a Florida cosmetic gynecologist. “Cosmetic gynecology is a fast growing profession, so, patients need to protect themselves by doing their research about which procedure they need and which practitioner they select.”

There are three dangerous trends in cosmetic gynecology today:

• One Size Fits All

– There are surgeons who perform a florida labiaplasty or vaginal rejuvenation only one way. But, removing too much skin could result in an unnatural appearance, which many patients dislike.
– Every patient’s body is different and each patient desires different results.

• High Volume/Low Cost

– Many surgeons advertise a wide variety of procedures, but this can mean the doctor doesn’t take the time to produce good results.
– A low cost may mean that the doctor is skipping some important steps.
– Be careful when it comes to your private areas.

• One-stop shop

– Some plastic surgeons will offer vaginal rejuvenation and labiaplasty alongside face lifts, breast enhancement, Botox, and other procedures.
– But, these generalists often don’t have much training in such specialized procedures.

When choosing a cosmetic gynecologist, look for the following:

• Experience: How many surgical, gynecological, and cosmetic gynecological procedures has the doctor performed? How long have they been practicing and what is their reputation?

• Advanced training: Look for specific vaginal rejuvenation training – especially advanced training with leaders in the field.

• Multiple methods: Look for a specialist who will design a procedure specifically for you, using a variety of methods and techniques.

• Photos: Check the Web site’s picture gallery and evaluate the quality of the doctor’s work.

•Testimonials: Find out what the doctor’s patients and colleagues are saying.

South Florida Cosmetic Dentist Describes Dangers of Neglecting Dental Treatment

The Surgeon General’s first report on oral health observes that dental cavities are the most common childhood health problem – 5 times more common than asthma. More than 50% of children ages 5 to 9 have at least one filling.

One of South Florida’s best cosmetic dentists, Dr. Charles Nottingham, observes “We lack adequate access to dental care for many Americans. For every American with dental insurance, there are three more who don’t have it.”

Poor children are two times more likely to suffer from cavities than their more affluent peers. More than 51 million school hours are lost to dental-related illnesses and the corresponding pain can cause problems with learning, eating, and speaking. “We have the technology and know-how to ensure that everyone can improve their oral health, but not everyone has access to it,” notes Dr. Nottingham, one of South Florida’s best dentists.

Adults don’t fare much better. Fewer than two-thirds visit a dentist in a given year. Americans lose more than 164 million hours of work time each year from dental disease or dental visits. Severe periodontal disease affects 14% of adults 45-54. “Smoking and other forms of tobacco use are big contributors to poor oral health,” says Dr. Nottingham, a cosmetic dentist. “Yet many Americans remain unaware of that.”

“Oral care is an integral part of overall health care. Dental visits can prevent a number of problems – such as infections – which, left untreated, can spread to the rest of your body,” points out cosmetic dentistry specialist Dr. Nottingham.

Florida Vaginal Surgeon Offers Superior Liposuction: Vaser Lipo

If you’d like to get rid of stubborn fat, but aren’t crazy about liposuction, you’re not alone. Now there’s an alternative called Vaser Lipo. “This technique is minimally invasive and can very precisely remove body fat from just about anywhere on the body – even the delicate areas around the face and chin,” says Dr. Mark Scheinberg of the Center for Cosmetic Gynecology.

Traditional Lipo: Using a suction device to break up fatty deposits, conventional lipo also tears apart surrounding tissues, damaging nerves, blood vessels, and collagen structures. This results in pain, bruising, and a prolonged recovery period.

Vaser Lipo: The vaser probe is inserted in the body where it uses sound energy (similar to that used in cataract removal) and liquefies the targeted fatty tissue. A suction device then removes the liquefied fat, but preserves blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. “This minimizes pain and improves skin retraction following the procedure,” says Dr. Scheinberg. “Recovery time is also much shorter than with conventional lipo.”

Vaser Lipo procedures have been performed over 150,000 times worldwide, with excellent safety results. A recent randomized, single blind study presented at the Annual American Society of Plastic Surgeons Annual Meeting reported that Vaser Lipo showed a 53% improvement in skin retraction compared to standard liposuction. Vaser Lipo also resulted in 26% lower blood loss than traditional lipo.
