Centralized Sent Mail Folder for Crypt-n-Send, Email Encryption Service

MDofficeMail is proud to announce the release of new version of Compose-Webpage, Webmail, iPhone/iPad App and Android App for their HIPAA compliant Email Encryption Service, Crypt-n-Send.

Most advanced and advantageous feature of this new version is- Centralized Sent Mail folder.

With most of the email services, when email messages are sent from webmail, Outlook/other email client applications or smart phone email programs, messages sent are stored in different folders. For example if you have sent a message from Outlook of your home computer, you don’t have access to that message unless you have access to that particular computer.

To overcome this common problem, CryptnSend adopted a new software technology.

Secure email messages sent using any of the below given methods are saved in to the Sent Mail folder of your Webmail. Further, this folder can be accessed directly from your smart phone and Compose-Webpage without logging into your Webmail:
A. Compose-Webpage: Browse https://cryptnsend.com, compose a secure message, and send.
B. Webmail: Browse https://secure.cryptnsend.com, login, compose a secure message, and send.
C. iPhone/iPad and Android App: Download and install the app, login with your email id and password, compose and send message.
D. MS Outlook/Apple Mail/Any other Email Client program: Configure your CryptnSend account in your email client program and send secure, encrypted messages.

About Crypt-n-Send Email Encryption Service from MDofficeMail
To send any confidential information like PHI by email, it is necessary that
a)Both the sender and the recipient should have a secure email account.
b)The content of the message should not be in human readable format if it is accessed by someone else.

In general, many responsible senders like medical facilities will have secure email service at their end. However, they ignore the importance of security at recipient’s end. It is a known fact that majority of people use free accounts with no security at all. To handle this critical issue that is most often ignored, to maintain the end-to-end security of emails, MDofficeMail is presenting to you Crypt-n-Send.

Crypt-n-Send is an innovative service for encrypting and delivering email with end-to-end security. You can use any email account to SEND secure email. The recipient’s email account need not be secure.

In addition, this process doesn’t involve the hassle of installing additional software, security certificates, or keys. However if you choose MS Outlook to send secure and plain messages, you can install Crypt-n-Send Add-in for MS Outlook as an option.

How Crypt-n-Send works
Continue to use your existing email account as before and subscribe to Crypt-n-send service for your existing email id.

Other important features of Crypt-n-Send include:
New recipient validation: By selecting this option while composing a message, the sender can restrict a new recipient from viewing the message without a security token. This token can be given to the recipient over phone.

Password reset authorization: Unless the sender authorizes, recipient cannot reset a forgotten password to view a secure message.
Validation of recipient to reset password: Optionally, the sender can validate the recipient requesting for a reset of a forgotten password.

Sender has the option to send encrypted message or plain message to any email recipient.

Access logs: Access logs can be viewed for each user, as required by HIPAA

Force expiration of sent messages: In case incorrect information is emailed by error, sender can force expire the message. Force expired message will no longer be available to the recipient.

Fixed life of sent message: Messages are automatically deleted from MDVault after 30 days irrespective of whether it is already viewed by the recipient or not.

Downloading and storing: If the recipient wants to save important messages for future reference, they can download and save the message on their computer.

Secure reply: Recipient of a secure message can send a secure, encrypted reply.

Automatic session time-out.

Change-Password Reminder: Users are reminded to change their password every 90 days to maintain the HIPAA compliance.

Attachments: Attachments can be sent using Compose Webpage, Webmail and MS Outlook.
Attachments are encrypted and can be downloaded from MDVault secure site. Recipients can include attachments in their replies as well.

Limitations with Crypt-n-Send Service from MDofficeMail:
Message headers, including the subject are not encrypted and will get delivered to the recipient in the notification. Be careful not to include sensitive information in the subject line.

Messages held by MDVault will be removed after 30 days for better security. So, it can’t be used as a long-term secure message storage.

Encryption technology used in Crypt-n-Send and MDofficeMail Email Hosting Service:

MDVault uses industry-standard AES-256 encryption in CBC mode with MD5 hash. Many federal agencies and financial institutions around the globe use the same class of encryption to protect very sensitive data. AES-256 encryption is so secure that there are no publicly-known attacks that will recover anything useful from an AES-256 encrypted file in any remotely reasonable amount of time.

Is it a Moment or an Abuse: the Boom of iPSCs Research after 2012 Medicine Nobel Prize

On Creative Biomart website, we can read a report about the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine regarding the two winners. They bring hope for organ or tissue repair for human or even for rejuvenation, i.e. for long life through induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

Since the first appearance in 2006, iPSCs became the hit and focus. But there are still lots of unknowns waiting for us before achieving the ideal status. Thus, numerous scientists, researchers and businessmen are struggling and investing for that goal. Here are some examples:

On Dec. 5, 2012, Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) and the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) announced today the launch of StemBANCC, a new academic–industry partnership that unites ten pharmaceutical companies and 23 academic institutions. Initiated and coordinated by Roche and managed by Oxford University, StemBANCC aims to use human induced pluripotent stem cells as research tools for drug discovery with the goal of using this ground-breaking new technology to develop human disease models and enhance drug development.

On Oct. 29, 2012, on the PANS Journal there is an article about Cartilage tissue engineering using differentiated and purified induced pluripotent stem cells.

On Oct. 4, 2012, on Cell Stem Cell, there is a report with the title be Genome Sequencing of Mouse Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Reveals Retroelement Stability and Infrequent DNA Rearrangement during Reprogramming.

On Jan. 30, 2012, on the PANS Journal, there is a report about modeling hepatitis C virus infection using human induced pluripotent stem cells, which make the individual and tailor therapy further.

Above are only a small part of such studies. People still wonder does it is the moment or an abuse on the iPSCs research. When someone reviewed one of the winners, Shinya Yamanaka, about his opinion on the challenge of iPSCs research, he said, “I have two research directions, the first is to establish human iPSCs bank that comply with clinical application standards. The second is to study the cell mechanism of iPSCs regenerating. And I think the current threat is still to be the safety problem as good research respects both scientific and ethical standards.”

But no one deny the great potential of iPSCs.

Sierra Vista AZ. Dentist Announces 2012 Holiday Free iPad Contest

Dr. Steve Wolfington, of Cochise Caring Dentistry in Sierra Vista, AZ. announces their “2012 Holiday Free Contest for residents of Cochise County Arizona. “We selected the iPad for our first contest because it is one of the most popular items people are interested in” states Dr Wolfington.

Dr. Wolfington states, ”We wanted to thank all of our patients for their continued support and give back to our community, so we created our first annual Holiday Contest, where any one of our existing patients has several chances to win a free iPad when they refer a friend or family member. All they have to do is go to our Sierra Vista Dentist Free iPad Contest Entry Page and fill out a short entry form and they’re automatically entered to win. The drawing will be held on Dec 20th 2012 and the winner will be announced on our blog.

We keep our contests and referral offers pretty simple, all we ask is that a patient refers a friend or family member who may be interested in getting the best dental care in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The referring patient can enter our contest as many times as they want by entering a new friend referral each time.

Our entire staff wanted to do something for the holidays and we all thought the iPad would make someone a nice gift for this year’s holidays.

We treat many patients from Benson, Bisbee, Douglas and other outlying cities in Cochise County, even as far as Tucson in our dental office in Sierra Vista. Our Sierra Vista dental office has been in this location for over 30 years, and our staff members have treated and cared for 2 and 3 generations of our patient’s family and friends.

Outside of our first annual Holiday Contest we maintain our “Smile-A-Mile” Program. This is an on-going program we created to support our community year-round. Smile-A-Mile reimburses our patients for their round trip cost of gas for each visit. We calculated the mileage from each of the cities like Benson, Douglas, Tombstone, Bisbee and more, to ourSierra Vista Dentist Office. We used the average miles per gallon that a typical family vehicle gets according to statistics, and the average cost of per gallon of gas throughout Cochise County Arizona, and came up with our “Smile-A-Mile Program”. As an example, our Benson Arizona Patients are now being reimbursed $7.00 for each and every visit to our Sierra Vista Dental office, and all they need to do is bring in a water, electricity or phone bill to show proof of residence”.

At Cochise Caring Dentistry, we strive to be the most affordable Family Dental and Cosmetic Dentistry Practice in Cochise County. For all of our New Patients, we offer 50% off our Exams and Cleanings and 50% off our Professional Opalescence Teeth Whitening treatments for all patients to assist our customers in attaining quality dental health”.

New Book, “Bush Medicine of the Bahamas” is the 2012 Recipient of Mary W. Klinger Book Award for Outstanding Book of the Year

Ethnobotanist, Jeffrey H. McCormack, Ph.D., says that what makes “Bush Medicine of the Bahamas” unique is its innovative, multi-faceted, cross-cultural approach that integrates oral history with botany, anthropology, and pharmacology. Its integrative approach and readable style make it especially appealing to Caribbean travelers, herbal practitioners, and educators. It also serves as a guide to medicinal flora.

The residents of the Bahamas practice a form of traditional medicine using tropical plants for curing diseases and treating ailments. On his website (http://www.bushmedicine.org) lead author, Jeffrey H. McCormack, Ph.D., writes that the enslaved African ancestors of the Bahamian people brought to the New World a practical knowledge of medicinal plants, and a legacy of “medicinal plant literacy” that helped them “read” and recognize the potential healing qualities of the many new and unfamiliar plants of the Bahamas. Under the influence of European and colonial practices, their diverse beliefs and healing practices were then simplified, distilled, transformed, reformulated, and further refined by generations of experimentation. This distinctive form of medicine is of value today for what it tells us of a unique culture, traditional healing, and the therapeutic value of their plants.

“Bush Medicine of the Bahamas” is the recipient of the 2012 Mary W. Klinger Book Award for outstanding book of the year, awarded annually by the Society for Economic Botany. The book has also been selected for the 19th annual Virginia Festival of the Book held in Charlottesville, Virginia, March 20-24, 2013.

Dr. McCormack says that the book is a comprehensive treatment of Bahamian bush medicine, dedicated to the preservation and continued use of this knowledge before it is lost. Chapters explore the cultural roots, principles, and practice of bush medicine. The materia medica covers 120 medicinal plants and 22 non-botanical remedies, including details of administration and dosage, pharmacology, and cross-cultural uses of bush medicine. Throughout the book, colorful oral histories provide details of the healers’ practices and glimpses of the culture of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas. What makes the book sing are the oral histories and personal stories. As internationally-celebrated nature writer Gary Paul Nabhan has written, “… what beautiful stories they are, some of them with healing power in their own right.”

This book can also serve as a field guide to medicinal flora and will therefore be of interest to nature-minded travelers throughout the Caribbean. Currently, it is available through several distributors in the Bahamas and U.S., and online at http://www.bushmedicine.org/orders-retail.html

Published by JHM Designs Publications, Charlottesville, VA, this is a large hardcover book (9” x 12” x 1”) of nearly 400 pages, including 161 illustrations (104 in color). Additional illustrations include photographs of bush medicine practitioners and island landscapes where they harvest their plant medicines. A dictionary of Bahamian dialect is included in the appendix. There are four indexes including common name, scientific name, subject index, and index of medicinal plants according to principal uses.

Excellent advance reviews from Gary Paul Nabhan, James A. Duke, Rosita Arvigo, and Roy Upton. For example: “This is the most comprehensive and richest ethnobotanical presentation on traditional bush medicine that I have seen …”

The lead author, Jeffrey Holt McCormack, Ph.D., is formerly a faculty member at Middlebury College, and the University of Virginia. Trained in natural products chemistry and physiological plant ecology he has worked in the fields of sustainable agriculture, genetic preservation, plant breeding, and ethnobotany. Co-author, Kathleen Maier, P.A., RH, is a nationally known herbalist, and recipient of the first Medicinal Plant Conservation Award bestowed by the United Plant Savers. Co-author, Patty Wallens, M.A., has a background in medical interviewing and home-based counseling.

UK Based Teeth Whitening Clinic, Smile Tech, Welcomes the New UK Law that Means Only Dentists can Perform Teeth Whitening Treatments

Following calls by the General Dental Council (GDT) to change the law and dental regulations to stop non-dentists carrying out teeth whitening treatments, those changes have been put in place and the law come into force in a move that has been applauded by the British Dental Health Foundation and the UK’s leading cosmetic teeth whitening clinic, Smile Tech.

A spokesperson for Smile Tech, which is one of the largest cosmetic teeth whitening providers in the UK and operate in shopping centres says, “We employ dentists to provide high quality, professional, safe treatments and an affordable price to the customer and that is why we have over 20,000 happy customers on our books to date.” They add, “We have always felt strongly about and fought those providers who have ignored the health and safety risks and given the professional teeth whitening clinics a bad name.”

Before this law change came into place, the regulations regarding tooth whitening procedures were a bit of a grey area. The 1984 Dentists Act came at a time before teeth whitening was a common practice, with the Act stating that “only dentists can perform dental procedures.” As teeth whitening is often seen as a cosmetic process as opposed to a dental process, non-dentists and non-dental professionals were able to carry out the treatment.

“There was often a lot of bad press towards teeth whitening clinics and providers that operated from shopping centres because there was very little control over who could or couldn’t carry out this procedure.” Smile Tech’s spokesperson explains, “We really suffered from this, as even though we have always used fully trained dentists, our Smile Tech premises are within shopping centres so we were bundled into this ‘unsafe’ category – which Smile Tech really isn’t!”

Smile Tech are now hoping that with local treading standards officers and the General Dental Council taking action to close down and prosecute any premises continuing to let non-dentists and non-dental care professionals carry out teeth whitening treatments, their customers and prospects can rest assured that they are safe in Smile Tech’s professional hands.

“Every single one of our clients have to go through a full and thorough consultation with our dentist before they undergo their teeth whitening treatment. Each year we turn away hundreds of people who, following their consultation, have been found to be unsuitable for the procedure.” Says the spokesperson for Smile Tech. They continue, “During the treatment’s set-up, we go to great lengths prior to applying the whitening gel to completely and totally isolate the teeth to ensure that the gel will not come into contact with the client’s gum. We also use a destaining agent and a de-sensitiser to give our clients the safest and most comfortable experience, whilst of course still achieving a great result.”

Vitamin D Pharmacy’s YouTube Video Surpasses the 2000 View Mark as Winter Sets in and the Hours of Vitamin D Producing Sunshine Decrease

New Life Pharmacy in Glasgow is on a mission to raise awareness of vitamin D deficiency and in turn, reduce the number of people suffering from its related health issues.

In April 2012 Elizabeth Roddick, Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, pharmacist and owner of the New Life Pharmacy released a video on YouTube that explains the health risks of being deficient in vitamin D. Low levels of this important vitamin have been linked with diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, hypothyroidism and cancer.

More recently, studies have found that a high level of vitamin D in women under the age of 75 can decrease the risk of macular degeneration and the loss of central vision, which is a main cause of partial-blindness in people over 50 years old (Qureshah, 2012). Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to health issues and diseases such as rickets, multiple sclerosis, depression and respiratory tract infections.

Vitamin D is produced when ultra violet (UVB) rays coming from the sun hit the skin. It is then absorbed through the liver where it is converted to calcidiol. It then works to check the calcium and phosphate levels in the blood, which are important for maintaining healthy bones. Vitamin D can also be found in some foods such as eggs, oily fish and fortified cereals.

It is common knowledge that all people’s vitamin D levels drop during the winter (November to March) as the sun is weaker during this time. A recent study (Qureshah, 2012) found that during the winter 28 percent of women had deficient levels of vitamin D, and 33 percent of women had insufficient levels. Being regarded as deficient means the level of vitamin D is less than 20ng/mL, insufficient is having 20-29ng/mL. Compare this with the summer statistics where only 5% are deficient in vitamin D and the contrast is clear.

According to Roddick, the skin needs to be exposed at the hottest time of the day (between 10am and 3pm) for about 15 minutes. These are the hours where the UVB rays are strongest and so vitamin D is most prevalent. This of course completely opposes the advice given out by skin cancer charities who urge sun bathers and holiday makers to stay out of the sun during these peak hours. Roddick does add, “It is of course very important than the skin does not burn since that can lead to skin cancer.”

Roddick believes that, “supplementation is required for most people. Also, because there are certain people who shouldn’t take vitamin D and a wide range of doses are available it can be confusing. Advice needs to be available when purchasing the products.”

In support of World Diabetes Day, Harvey Norman’s Connected Fitness team research reveals that 280 Australians develop diabetes every day

In support of World Diabetes Day (14 November), Harvey Norman’s Connected Fitness team carried out a detailed research project to uncover the extent of Australia’s type 2 diabetes problem. The worrying results indicate that an estimated 1.7 million Australians suffer from type 2 diabetes today, with up to half of these cases currently undiagnosed. Reports from The World Health Organisation indicate that the total number of diabetic Australians is expected to increase to 3.3 million by 2031, creating a healthcare timebomb for the country. An infographic to visually represent the results has been specially commissioned and can be found on the Harvey Norman website.

Diabetes can significantly impact the quality of life and life expectancy of its sufferers. Some of the potential health complications caused by the disease include kidney damage, heart disease and stroke, loss of vision, and foot ulcers leading to limb amputation. The long term impacts on the life of the sufferer, and on healthcare costs for the country, are significant. However, it is known that up to around 60% of cases of type 2 diabetescould be prevented.

Key steps that can be taken to help prevent the development of this killer disease include eating a healthy diet, cutting out tobacco, keeping alcohol consumption within sensible limits and taking regular exercise. Walking, running and cycling are all great forms of exercise that enable people to work at their own pace and can easily be carried out in the home using treadmills and exercise bikes. Harvey Norman’s Connected Fitness team are on hand to provide help and advice on suitable fitness equipment and tools that can make it easy for people to increase their levels of activity and monitor their progress.

Harvey Norman’s Daniel Hosford, says: “World Diabetes Day should be an important date in everyone’s diary. Harvey Norman understands the importance of following a healthy lifestyle in order to protect against this debilitating disease and we’d like to do our bit to support the aims of the day. Our Connected Fitness team are happy to help our customers find the right equipment to help them take part in a healthy level of exercise, and our range is also available to purchase online for those customers who don’t have a store nearby. ”

3:30 Detox Diet launched by Matakana SuperFoods

The 3 day 3:30 Detox Diet combines 10 unique high-quality, super-ingredients which will set users on the path to better health, according to Matakana SuperFoods founder Kevin Glucina. “When I initially set out the foundations for the 3:30 Detox Diet I had many natural super-nutrient ingredients to choose from to help get the formula right. I narrowed that field down to the 10 most important ingredients for a detox diet. We included Cracked cell Chlorella which has recently been tested in Japanese clinical trials for reducing dioxin transfer from mothers milk to baby with remarkable results. Another ingredient is a long chain polysaccharide from Goji berry which has shown some protection for the liver in alcohol poisoning in rat studies. Both of the ingredients mentioned seem to reduce the impact of radiation exposure in human and rodent studies as well so there is a component in their antioxidant or phytochemical profile which is beneficial to our health.

The calorie intake from the 3:30 Detox Diet sachets, which are taken in a glass of water 4 times per day, is low but the nutrient content is very high. In the sachet formula I have included 7 ingredients which have some of the highest natural antioxidant levels in nature, as well as a powerful array of vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and phytochemicals. With the 3:30 Detox Diet we are restricting caloric intake over the 3 days but at the same time flooding the body with super-nutrients. The result will be a 3-day transformation of body chemistry, alkalinity and overall nutrient profile. Matakana SuperFoods have been a world-leader and first to market with many popular Superfood products. There are “world first” ingredients in the 3:30 Detox Diet as well. The ingredients contained within the12 capsules which participants will take each day, in addition to the 4 sachets, contain 2 organically-certified green alkalisers and a special new purified ingredient from Undaria seaweed called Fucoidan. Fucoidan is a leading new product in the world of nutriceuticals and clinical research in Asia and Australia has shown that Fucoidan aids the function of adult stem cells by making it easier for the stem cells to get to and aggregate at repair sites around the human body. Stem cell nutrition is the new horizon in the health food industry. Adult stem cells are the most important component of repair and maintenance of our immune system and body on every level and any natural substance that can support stem cell function has incredible potential for our health and wellbeing. This is the first time such a rare substance like organic Fucoidan has been used in a detox programme, and combined with all our other super-nutrient ingredients it will make the 3-day 3:30 Detox Diet one of the most advanced detox diets anywhere in the world.

We’re hoping this will drive other Banner Health local Community Organizations to do the same.

Last year, we raised a total of $4,000 for several Mesa and Gilbert Schools, and the 2,000 pounds of candy we bought back was donated to our troops serving overseas. This year we expect to make it a Banner Year with our Arizona Banner Health Employee participation”.

Sprint Bioscience Strengthens Its Cancer Metabolism Portfolio

Sprint Bioscience, a Swedish company developing oncology therapeutics targeting cancer metabolism, announced today that it has raised money to strengthen its drug discovery portfolio.

The investment by Första Entreprenörsfonden and Almi Invest will enable the company to continue to build a pipeline of drug discovery projects within cancer metabolism.

“We are investing in Sprint Bioscience because we consider their entrepreneurial drive and their particular skills in drug development to be key success factors for the changing environment of the future pharmaceutical industry. Sprint Bioscience’s business strategy involves out-licensing or collaborating at an early stage of drug discovery to ensure that projects are developed with a focus on current and relevant market needs,” says Rune Nordlander, partner at Första Entreprenörsfonden.

Sprint Bioscience is a company founded by experienced drug hunters with an ambition to improve the drug discovery process. “We believe in small organisations with effective working procedures and collaborations throughout the sector,” says the company’s CEO and co-founder, Dr. Anders Ã…berg.

“Sprint Bioscience has developed an efficient, fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) platform that can take parallel projects from initial idea to active molecules tested in cell-based systems in a very short time” Anders Ã…berg continues. Our goal is to align the early phase in the laboratory with pharmaceutical companies’ needs.

Targeting the metabolism in tumours provides exciting opportunities to develop drug therapies with novel mechanisms of action. This could be used to overcome the resistance that many cancer cells develop to current treatments.

User Friendly Home Study Now Available For Paediatric First Aid Training

Train Aid has created a brand new home study scheme to be used on their monthly open paediatric first aid courses. The twelve hour courses are usually run over two Saturdays each month at the Selhurst Children’s Centre in South London and the Highgate Road Chapel north of the river. Most of the candidates work full time through the week in childcare roles, and therefore to ease the strain the idea to have one day’s home study was born. This means that candidates only now need to attend the second Saturday, and have as much time as they require too complete the home study work packs.

Work packs are easy to understand, which enable users to research theoretical topics, and then test themselves on them. Puzzles, pictures and multiple choice exams combine to test if a candidate has grasped a particular topic. The packs are then brought along to the practical day of the course where the instructor can make sure everything is in place, and field any questions. Paediatric first aid training coordinator Heather Bennett who designed the pack was on hand to say a little more:

“The concept behind the work packs was to replace the lectures usually held on day one of the training. For example of you take the sample topic of ‘First Aid Kits’, The learner now reads up on the topic instead of having a lecture, and can then test themselves through a puzzle. The material is still learnt in the same way, but there is no need to travel to a training centre”.

The main benefit to the new system is that learners can complete the first day of the course in their own time, and within the comfort of their own home . However this can be extended to anywhere, which means people can fill out their work packs on the commute to work or even on a lunch break. Another benefit is that the second day on the paediatric first aid courses solely focuses on learning hands on practical skills.

Boots UK and Macmillan Cancer Support launch new role to help millions access cancer information

According to new research* almost a third of people affected by cancer felt that they had insufficient information and support outside of their healthcare team. Boots UK and Macmillan have specially trained over 500 Boots Macmillan Information Pharmacists to help improve the lives of those affected by cancer**. They will be available in many Boots stores to help connect people to information and support in their local area.

The launch of the Boots Macmillan Information Pharmacist is the first time that the role of a pharmacist has been extended to include this type of cancer information and support. It is estimated that 2 million people are currently living with or beyond cancer in the UK and this is anticipated to increase to 4 million by 2030***. As the demand for cancer health care is set to rise, the launch of this innovative pharmacy role aims to help the millions of people affected by cancer access the information and support they need, in an accessible and trusted environment.

Macmillan and Boots UK believe that by sharing expertise and working together, we can reach even more of the millions of people affected by cancer than we are currently.”

The research also showed that nearly three quarters (74%) of people living with cancer felt that the information and support they received outside of their healthcare team made them better equipped to understand their cancer experience:
– 92% felt it had a positive impact on their emotional, physical or financial well being
– 51% felt able to understand more about their cancer and their experience of it
– 48% felt able to make decisions that were right for them

Alex Gourlay, Chief Executive of Health & Beauty Division, Alliance Boots, added:

Half Of Australian Workers Have Considered A Career Change In The Past Five Years Says carecareers

carecareers is a NSW government-funded initiative launched to help job seekers connect with the thousands of opportunities in the care sector, and to provide career advice, including what transferrable skills are useful and what on-the-job-training is available.

Job opportunities in the disability and community care sector are booming; employers in this sector are looking to recruit up to 10,000 people in the next five years – because the number of people who require some form of paid-care is expected to rise to 380,000.

There is a need to recruit people across a wide range of positions including:physiotherapists, speech pathologists, frontline support workers, gardeners, drivers and cooks, as well as executive staff and accountants, marketing, human resources professionals.

Research commissioned by carecareers shows:

More than half of Australian workers (52%) have considered changing careers in the past five years. (57% women, 49% men)

Almost two-thirds of people aged 18-34 have considered a career change in the past five years.

More than half of Australian workers consider the disability and community care sector provides rewarding work. Of the industries surveyed, disability and community care also ranked highest for its respect for workers (35%).

Overview of career changers attracted to work in the sector:

The most common reason given by people looking for a change of career is that they are “looking for a more satisfying and fulfilling career”.

Career changers come from a wide variety of industry sectors with the three largest being retail/sales (23%), administration (12%) and hospitality (14%) industries.

The majority of career changers are women, with an average age of 34.

What has carecareers achieved in the past 12 months?

More than 10,000 job applications for positions have been made through the carecareers service in the past 12 months, an increase of 50% on the previous year.

More than 300 employers across NSW have registered to use carecareers to attract a range of workers in the sector since it launched (January 2010).

The carecareers advisory-service team have spoken personally with thousands of people considering a career in the sector.

What are the benefits of a ‘carecareer’?

There has never been a better time to explore a career in the disability and community care sector. Employment is booming, with 10,000 more people needed to fill a wide variety of roles over the next five years.

Work within the disability and community care sector offers employees flexible working hours, on-the-job training, and employment security, with the demand for staff increasing as the sector booms.

One area of significant job growth in the sector will involve allied health professionals, especially in rural and regional communities. Increasing specialisation of allied health professionals, combined with sector-wide increases in demand for services and a greater focus on recruitment and retention are fuelling demand for these professionals.

Recent research found more than half of respondents recognised the disability and community care sector as providing rewarding work, far ahead of major industry sectors including retail, mining and manufacturing. [Source: Essential Poll, April 2012]

Using Psychology to Lose Weight – Because Dieting and Exercise Alone Don’t Work

MariasLastDiet.com, the website for women who want to lose weight, issued a  white paper today about using psychology to lose weight. The author, Kenneth Schwarz PhD, a psychologist and psychoanalyst and co-founder of MariasLastDiet.com, wrote the paper because of the continuing high rate of weight-loss failure with the current standard formula, Diet + Exercise = Weight Loss.

Dr. Schwarz argues the case for using psychology to lose weight by amending the formula to read, Weight Loss = Dieting + Exercise + Using Psychology, where using psychology is really two factors, adherence and personal change.

Adherence, which research shows is the single-best determiner of weight loss, is sticking to it—the diet or weight-loss program. Adherence is not only sticking to your food plan, though, it is also sticking to what will help you make the necessary personal changes.

Losing weight, especially for women, is never just about the food. It is always about a woman’s psychology as well. Personal change has to do with altering old patterns of behavior and replacing these patterns with new behaviors that are more conducive to successful weight loss.

Dieting and weight loss as they are currently practiced require a lot of self-control and willpower. The use of so much willpower and self-control makes the weight-loss process terribly arduous and ripe for failure. To address this, Dr. Schwarz added another goal to the primary goal of losing unwanted weight, that of using the least possible amount of self-control and willpower to effect change.

Once the goal of making the weight-loss process much less dependent on willpower and self-control is set, what remains is to show how to implement this goal. Dr. Schwarz takes traditional weight-loss issues and, using the principles and practices of psychology, illustrates how to successfully resolve these issues more automatically, and without the need for such self-defeating effort.

New Study Suggests Alcohol Abuse Rewires Brain, Impedes Trauma Recovery

A recently published study suggests that heavy alcohol use may interfere with recovery from traumatic situations.

The study was published in the journal Nature Neuroscience and focused on mice that were chronically exposed to alcohol in doses twice the legal driving limit imposed on humans. Conversely, the control group of mice wasn’t exposed to any alcohol. After administering, and then ceasing, tiny electrical shocks mimicking trauma within humans, the mice chronically exposed to excessive alcohol had a more difficult time recovering from the trauma. In addition, a key receptor within the brains of the alcohol-exposed mice was suppressed and nerve cells within the brain were found to have taken on a different shape.

“This study offers valuable insight into how chronic alcohol abuse may disrupt recovery pathways in human brains,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab andAlcohol Treatment Center. “By understanding the correlation between chronic alcohol abuse and anxiety associated with traumatic events, researchers could eventually develop drugs that could assist in recovery for chronic alcohol abusers.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that excessive alcohol use is the third leading lifestyle-related cause of death within the United States, estimating nearly 80,000 deaths annually. If you fear that a loved one may be excessively consuming alcohol, Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center can assist them in getting their life back on track. Mountainside’s comprehensive alcohol rehab program has been recognized as a standout program among their peers.

Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center is a modern drug rehab and alcoholism treatment facility that is skilled in serving a variety of clients with various addictions and in varying stages of addiction. The caring, compassionate team is made up of licensed and certified social workers and counselors who have extensive experience and specialty in the addiction treatment field. In addition, the staff includes a Nurse Practitioner, as well as a Registered Nurse, both of whom also have specializations and experience within the field of addiction treatment and alcohol rehab.

Mountainside also has available services for those individuals who come to them with dual diagnoses and require the services of a Psychiatrist to help conquer the unique challenges that dual diagnosis brings.

For the past 13 years, Mountainside has established itself as an innovator within the addiction treatment field, and the treatment modalities Mountainside utilizes are regarded as among the most cutting-edge approaches in helping individuals to get, and to remain, sober. As a result of their unique, innovative approaches to addiction treatment, Mountainside has become the model for the addiction treatment field.

The program and its professional addiction treatment team have earned national recognition and resulted in Mountainside being invited to Washington by the White House to meet with the White House Drug Czar, John P. Walters, for an in-depth meeting on what makes its program so successful. These accolades did not go unnoticed within the addiction treatment field and resulted in the adoption by many throughout the country of a more holistic approach to drug addiction treatment.

If you or someone you love is addicted to drugs or alcohol, or if you have any questions, please contact Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center for a confidential discussion at 800-762-5433.
