Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) Joins The Pool for Open Innovation Against Neglected Tropical Diseases

Global Health Progress (GHP) is pleased to highlight the announcement that the not-for-profit public-private partnership Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) will became the first product development partnership (PDP) to contribute intellectual property to The Pool for Open Innovation against Neglected Tropical Diseases (The Pool).

MMV joined GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in providing intellectual property to The Pool. Discussing the decision, Professor Patrick Nef, Executive Vice President of Business Development at MMV, states, “In this way we hope to make fully available the know-how and technologies, assembled by MMV against malaria, for the research and development of innovative and efficacious treatments for other neglected diseases.”

By emphasizing a more accessible approach to intellectual property and know-how, The Pool facilitates access to patents and/or technologies for organizations that want to conduct research on treatments and motivates innovative and efficient drug discoveries and developments for neglected diseases.

The Pool is administered by BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH). It’s accessible to industry, non-profit institutions, and academic researchers who conduct research and drug development activities that deliver real benefits for patients in the least developed countries of the world.

Global Health Progress echoes the sentiment that MMV’s contribution of patents to The Pool, resulting from its research for new antimalarials, is an important milestone from an organization that plays a major role in leading the development of new therapeutics for malaria.

Global Health Progress supports the continuing partnership between not-for-profit public-private partnerships and research-based biopharmaceutical companies as a way to fight neglected tropical disease through targeted research and development (R&D), improving access to critical medicines and providing key intellectual property.

Lloydspharmacy Reveals Five Star Holidaymakers Think They Are Too Posh To Die

According to new research* by Lloydspharmacy’s Online Travel Clinic, five star holidaymakers are needlessly risking their lives when visiting malaria hotspots in Africa, Asia and South America.

It is estimated that over 13.5 million** British travellers have stayed in four and five star resorts in malarial countries with over a quarter not protecting themselves against local diseases. In fact over three million Brits did not bother to check to see if the country they were visiting had a malaria risk.

Worryingly 32% of all Brits believe they are less at risk of catching malaria if they stay at a luxury resort. The Lloydspharmacy research also found that only 30% of people who visit malarial countries take anti-malarial medication for the duration of their trip. A substantial proportion also discontinued anti-malarial medication prematurely when they returned home. Recently Cheryl Cole contracted malaria following a trip to Tanzania – although she was reported to have taken anti-malarials during her trip, it is not known whether she continued taking these upon her return.

According to the NHS website approximately 1,500 travellers return to the UK with malaria every year. In 2008, there were 1,370 cases of malaria reported and six deaths in the UK.

“Mosquitoes have no qualms about checking into luxury resorts”, said Clare Kerr, Lloydspharmacy’s Head of Travel Health. “The belief that staying in five star accommodation somehow provides immunity against diseases like malaria is very dangerous.

“Most UK travellers who catch malaria either do not take any anti-malarial treatments or do not get the right pills for the part of the world they’re visiting. It is important to get health advice before going to an area where there is a risk of malaria or other diseases such as diphtheria, typhoid and hepatitis.”

Lloydspharmacy’s Online Travel Clinic aims to make it as convenient as possible for travellers to obtain the malaria pills they need. After a consultation, Lloydspharmacy’s online doctors can provide a private prescription and arrange delivery of the medicines by post.

Britons Play Russian Roulette With World’s Deadliest Disease – The Malaria

According to new research* carried out by Lloydspharmacy, the UK’s leading community pharmacy chain, around 2.1million British holidaymakers and travellers are ignoring the need to protect themselves against malaria.

lloydspharmacy

This may explain the alarming rise in the number of cases found in the UK, with the British Medical Journal reporting a 30% rise in malaria cases in the UK over the last 15 years**.

According to the new survey of over 1000 people, 25% had travelled to a malaria hotspot in the last five years, with the African continent the most popular of these destinations (11%). The research also found that 19% of these intrepid adventurers either ignored the risk of malaria, or abandoned their malaria medication during the danger period. Despite malaria being one of the leading causes of disease and death in the world, with an estimated 300-500 million new cases worldwide every year, resulting in 1.5 to 2.7 million deaths***, Lloydspharmacy found 9% of men and 5% of women simply relied on less effective measures like mosquito repellent, nets or Vitamin B to protect themselves from the potentially deadly disease. A worrying 11% did not even realise that they had travelled to a malarial hotspot.

The release of these findings coincides with the launch of a new complete range of prescription only anti-malarial pills which are available through the Lloydspharmacy’ Online Doctor. This is one of only a few online services of its kind and does not require a visit to a GP. This service is designed to encourage travellers to stock up on the necessary anti-malaria pills before travelling

Chris Frost, Head of Medicines at Lloydspharmacy said “We are far too complacent about the risks of malaria and as a result we have one of the worst track records amongst industrialised countries for bringing this disease home from our holidays. Our new online malaria pills service aims to encourage holidaymakers to protect themselves by making it as easy as possible to access the necessary malaria pills.

“Unfortunately all it takes is just one bite from an infected mosquito to contract malaria and it can be deadly if not treated. However, buying the medication isn’t enough – it will do little to protect travellers unless they follow the instructions carefully.”

The Lloydspharmacy online malaria service involves the customer completing an online questionnaire which is screened by a GP from Dr Thom. If the customer meets appropriate criteria, a prescription is issued and medication distributed with advice on how to take the medication to best effect.

* ICM Survey, Sample 1040, fieldwork done 12th – 14th December 2008
** A Health Protection Agency study identified 6,753 cases of falciparum malaria diagnosed in the UK between 2002 and 2006. This is a 30% increase over the last 15 years, according to the British Medical Journal.
