New Study Shows Cortisol Level A Possible Contributor To Alcohol Abuse

New discoveries are giving more hope for those battling addiction to alcohol. A recently published study indicates a correlation between alcohol abuse and the hormone cortisone.

A study published in England by the University of Liverpool indicates that alcoholics may have a higher incidence of elevated cortisol levels than levels present in the general population. Cortisol, a hormone released under stress, seems to not only affect alcoholics but has also been shown to be elevated in individuals suffering from any type of substance abuse addiction.

American Academy Of Pediatrics Want Limits Place On Alcohol Ads

In an effort to help curtail drug abuse and alcohol consumption among minors, the American Academy of Pediatrics is launching a campaign to change the way advertisements are allowed to be displayed and distributed.

“It’s clear that advertising is the most effective means of communicating a message,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “And, the American Academy of Pediatrics is fighting fire with fire, which is exactly what is needed. When advertisers elevate alcohol or other substances not appropriate for minors to a level of glamour, or they imply that there is no fun without the use of such substances, it entices minors to try those products. We know that alcohol abuse is the number one substance abused and is one of the greatest problems in America which results in addiction treatment. Studies have shown that the younger a child is when they experiment with alcohol, the more likely they are to continue that experimentation into illegal, more lethal and highly addictive drugs. Alcohol is recognized to be one of the number one gateways to greater substance abuse. Enacting stricter regulations for advertisers could go a long way in changing the face of alcohol experimentation and abuse among minors.”

It is estimated that advertising may contribute up to 30% in the use of alcohol and tobacco and is especially effective on minors. A recently published study showed that mascots commonly used in alcohol ads were nearly 75% as readily identifiable as Bugs Bunny among fourth graders.

Among the hot points within their campaign, the American Academy of Pediatrics seeks to limit advertisement for alcohol when the audience is made up of more than 10% children. In addition, they are also requesting that the White House Office on Drug Control Policy conduct anti-teen drinking public service campaigns. They are also urging parents to become more involved in what media their children are exposed to and limit unsupervised media use.

Narconon Arrowhead Works With Community For Recovery Month

(Canadian, OK) – Narconon Arrowhead believes that their role in fighting the drug problem is more than just effective rehabilitation services. They also provide drug education and prevention as well as work with other community leaders to improve living conditions in the area.

Recently they participated in an effort to revive an old theater nearby with the Pride in McAlester group, where several staff members assisted in cleaning it up the OKLA Theater along with people from Westwood Construction, Hope House and Interior Resources. It was just one of many community events the organization has participated in this year.

In addition to providing drug prevention for tens of thousands of students throughout the state of Oklahoma and surrounding areas, Narconon Arrowhead has also been working with local businesses to offer drug education in the workplace, and was named the business of the month for the McAlester Area Chamber of Commerce.

Over-The-Counter Cough Syrup Abuse On The Rise, Tighter Regulations Considered

Here we have a medication that most households all over America have in their medicine cabinets: a simple cough medicine. The Harley Medical Group Report Surge In Liposuction Procedures

Abdominoplasty surgery enquiries are also up 32% over the last two months with some patients even taking their summer holidays as ‘surgery breaks’, using the time off to recover before returning to work rejuvenated.

Liz Dale, Director of The Harley Medical Group said: “You can get liposuction on various areas of the body, not just the stomach area. It can be used to target problem areas such as the hips, buttocks, inner and outer thighs, knees and double chins.

“Many of our patients come back from a holiday with a resolution to make a change to their life. With pictures of celebrities soaking up the sun in bikinis hitting the newspapers every day, British women are being spurred into taking action.”

Liposuction is performed under a general anaesthetic and takes one to two hours. A very small incision is used to insert the cannula to extract the fat and sometimes this is closed with a stitch or dissolvable suture. Following the operation, patients are required to rest for 48 hours and avoid bending and heavy lifting. Patients must wear a support garment until advised otherwise by their consultant.

The Harley Medical Group Reports In Increase In Bald Patch Treatments

The Harley Medical Group has reported demand from male patients for laser rejuvenation treatments is up +93% over the last quarter, across its 30 clinics.

Laser rejuvenation treatments now account for 11% of all non-surgical treatments carried out during June, July and August at the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery group. More unusual requests received this year are for skin regeneration treatments on receding hairlines, including laser treatment and chemical peels to reduce the appearance of aging sun spots.

New Gateway To Illicit Drug Addiction

A recent study conducted by University of Buffalo physicians suggests that prescription pain killers are the new gateway drug to illicit drug addiction.

A study published by UB shows that 31 out of 75 patients hospitalized for narcotic detox first became addicted to drugs as a result of legitimately prescribed narcotics for pain. Another 24 individuals obtained their drugs via a friend’s left-over pills or from a family member’s medicine cabinet. The remaining 20 patients said they got hooked on street drugs.

A startling 92% of the patients within the study said they turned to buying heroin off of the street as it is less expensive and produces a stronger high than any prescription narcotics.

After their pain was resolved, however, most reported that they continued to use the prescribed drugs to help deal with the emotional stresses of day to day life and to feel better, in general.

“This is a disturbing trend,” remarks a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcoholism Treatment Center. “While effective for short-term pain management, prescription pain killers can be quite dangerous for some people. When these medications are prescribed it is best that patients be advised of the various ramifications that can occur and, if they begin to feel any dependence, they should tell their doctor. It can be very useful to bring in a pain management specialist for patients requiring longer term use. Researchers found that about 51% of those who use illicit drugs first used narcotic pain killers for back pain, after surgery or an injury. The remaining 49% began using drugs simply because they were curious or a peer had narcotics readily available.
