Says Lisa Littlehales, Specialist Nurse Counsellor at The Harley Medical Group: “Lots of mums come in for non-surgical treatments before their children start school again.

“Most of these women have minimal spare time and don’t have time to put on makeup every day, so non-surgical treatments which are quick and with minimal pain mean that with busy term times, they are a great option. Most last up to a minimum of three months, which means that mums will stay looking great and feeling confident at the school gates all term.”

Liberate Cosmetic Surgery has discovered that 25% of women that it surveyed started to first consider cosmetic surgery between the ages of 10-15 years-old.

The 3000 British women between 18 and 30 years-old who took part in the research were asked at what age they first considered cosmetic surgery, to which 25% of women answered between the ages of 10-15 years-old. 33% also answered that they had considered cosmetic surgery between the ages of 15-18 years-old.

Liberate Cosmetic Surgery views this as quite an interesting yet shocking statistic, as it shows a large number of people may be considering plastic surgery from a very young age.

Mr Paul Banwell, consultant plastic surgeon at Liberate commented: “There is no doubt that more and more younger people are considering cosmetic surgery and breast augmentation still remains the number 1 procedure. However, the statistics regarding the age at which women are first considering surgery is quite shocking.”

The research was conducted by One Poll in February 2011; surveying 3000 British women aged 18 – 30 regarding their feelings about their appearance and their attitudes towards cosmetic surgery. It wanted to explore issues young women face surrounding cosmetic surgery, look at current trends and find out what young women know and don’t know about surgery.

Liberate Reveals Almost Half Of Women Teased About Their Looks Consider Cosmetic Surgery

Liberate, the new cosmetic surgery group, has been completing some public research around some shocking topics, with the most notable revealing that almost half of the women consulted who were bullied at school have considered cosmetic surgery in order to ‘fix’ themselves.

The 3000 British women between 18 and 30 years-old who took part in the research were asked if they had ever been bullied, teased or targeted about their appearance, to which 47.45% answered yes and 52.57% answered no. Out of the women who answered yes to the first question, 43.5% of them said they would consider cosmetic surgery to fix the problem.

These results from the Liberate public research show that at some point around half of the women surveyed were bullied, and around half of these women would consider getting cosmetic surgery because they believe this would ‘fix’ the issue which was causing them to be bullied in the first place.

Liberate believes this is a shocking statistic, as people who are being bullied should be equipped with the proper tools to deal with it financially, physically and psychologically instead of opting for cosmetic surgery without making an informed and responsible choice.

The research was conducted by One Poll in February 2011 in order to record women’s feeling about their appearance and their attitudes towards to cosmetic surgery. Liberate wanted to explore issues young women face surrounding cosmetic surgery, look at current trends and find out what young women know and don’t know about surgery.

Men Seek ‘Boytox’ And Surgery To Save Their Jobs And To Compete In Jobs Market

The Harley Medical Group Ireland has revealed a cosmetic surgery boom amongst FAMs (forty or fifty year old alpha males) reporting year-on-year increases as follows:

The recession may have had an unexpected consequence for men, particularly those over 40, according to The Harley Medical Group who are today reporting a more than 300% increase in the past 10 years in the number of men seeking Boytox and other cosmetic surgery procedures at its Dublin clinic. While there was once a stigma attached to men seeking cosmetic improvements in Ireland, that taboo has nearly disappeared, especially among men seeking to save their job or to find a job. The number of men gettingfacelifts rose 16% from 2009 to 2010 while men using Boytox increased by a massive 43% and male liposuction rose 9%, according to new statistics just released by The Harley Medical Group. The reason for the increases appears to be related to a tougher job market, which has hit men disproportionately.

“We have attributed the dramatic rise in cosmetic procedures for men in Ireland to the fact that many men want to stay looking young so that they can compete with their younger counterparts as competition for jobs becomes fiercer during the recession”, says Liz Dale, Director of The Harley Medical Group.

“Many men are conscious that their appearance may be a reason that they received or did not receive a promotion or new job. These men claim that they either want to look younger, healthier, or both, in order to help their confidence and also assist them with their careers. Men in their forties often start with Rejuvenation Packages, a course of Boytox, a dermal filler and laser treatments, and then start looking for a more dramatic surgical solution when they hit their fifties, opting for surgery to remove eye bags and even full facelifts to turn back the clock,” she added.

The figures released today also reveal that 20% of all Botox patients at The Harley Medical Group are now men. According to The Harley Medical Group’s Boytox doctor, Dr Quinn, the average male Boytox patient is aged between 34 and 45 years.

Dr Quinn explains: “Our patients are looking to gain an edge in their looks and take off a few years. Most recently, I am treating patients who have just lost their jobs due to the recession and are seriously concerned about their future job prospects with many having spent several years in the same job. The results from a short treatment of Boytox and possibly dermal fillers can be dramatic and make them look younger while giving them more confidence in the job market. The main areas that men seek treatment for are excessive smile lines (or crow’s feet) and the deep horizontal lines across their forehead associated with ageing. The Harley Medical Group reports boom in post-baby breast surgery

The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s leading cosmetic surgery provider, has reported a rise in mums booking surgical treatments post-pregnancy to help them combat the effects of pregnancy. The most popular treatment amongst new mums is breast augmentation, with bookings up 31% year-on-year.

The Group, which treats thousands of women a year across their 31 clinics, has seen more new mothers turning to surgical options to help regain shape and body confidence following pregnancy. Liposuction is also popular, up 27% year-on-year, and tummy tuck bookings are also up 15% year-on-year.

“Many mothers find their breasts change after giving birth – often they notice a decrease in size or difference in shape following pregnancy and breast feeding. This can affect confidence and self-esteem. Lots of women are realising the surgical options available to them – breast augmentation helps mothers regain the shape and fullness of the breast, helping them feel more feminine again.”

Marco Moraci, surgeon at The Harley Medical Group, said: “Breast surgery is the most popular procedure amongst women, particularly new mums. The operation takes around an hour and a half, and patients are required to wear a supportive bra for the three months following. Prior to the surgery, we’ll help the patient choose the right size implant for their shape to ensure they achieve the look they desire.”

The procedure consists of a small incision being made in the crease of the underside of the breast, the armpit or lower edge of the areola. Once the incision is made, a pocket will be created for the implant to lie in. This may be either beneath the muscle or beneath the breast tissue.

Failure to Investigate Cosmetic Surgeon Can Cost You Your Life

A recent death illustrates the importance of investigating your cosmetic surgeon, says Dr. Mark Scheinberg from the Center for Cosmetic Laser Gynecology. Lidvian Zelaya, 35, underwent a procedure for abdominal liposuction and buttocks injections at the Strax Rejuvenation Clinic in south Florida.

She was rushed to the hospital, but died only a few hours after the start of the procedure. Investigations of public records by ABC News reveal that Dr. Roger L. Gordon, Zelaya’s plastic surgeon at Strax, has had 20 lawsuits filed against him since 2004. He was placed on probation by the Maryland Board of Physicians for undisclosed reasons and he had his staff privileges terminated by the Florida Medical Center. The Sun Sentinal revealed that Gordon was disciplined by the state in connection with two deaths in 2004.

“If you’re choosing a plastic surgeon, you want to do your homework,” says Scheinberg. “You’re entrusting them with your body – and your life. You need a doctor you can have confidence in.”

Scheinberg has been board certified in obstetrics and gynecology since 1981 and has performed over 10,000 surgical procedures. Scheinberg has received 100s of hours of training with Professor Adam Ostrzenski, M.D. Ph.D., a pioneer in safe, effectivevaginal reconstruction and cosmetic vaginal surgery.

Zalaya’s cause of death is under investigation, but she was declared healthy enough for surgery by doctors at the Strax Clinic. “I think it’s an inherent conflict of interest if you are getting screened by the surgeon who wants to do the procedure,” said Spencer Aronfeld, a malpractice attorney retained by Zalaya’s husband, Osvaldo Vargas.

Vargas has been publicizing the case as a way of warning others to investigate their cosmetic surgeons. In particular, he is urging patients to get a second pre-operative examination by an independent doctor. He said that Zelaya chose the Strax Clinic because she got a good deal on the procedure.

“You don’t want to rush into this kind of decision or select the doctor who offers you the lowest cost,” notes Scheinberg. “You want someone who has a long record of success with the procedure you are getting. Complaints and disciplinary actions against doctors are part of the public record. Patients can and should look this information up.”

Florida Gynecologist Rebuts Misconceptions About Cosmetic Procedures

Cosmetic gynecology is a burgeoning field with a growing number of practitioners and patients all over the U.S. However, some doctors expressed concern about the field in a recent issue of OB.Gyn News. Many worried that such procedures aren’t medically indicated, while others were concerned about negatively affecting a woman’s self-image by suggesting that her private parts might be unattractive.

However, Dr. Mark Scheinberg, a South Florida cosmetic gynecologist from the Center for Cosmetic Laser Gynecology, knows these criticisms are unfounded. “I have seen hundreds of patients in my practice, “says Dr. Scheinberg. “Many of them have functional concerns, such as pain, difficulty with urine retention, or diminished sexual satisfaction. Aging, childbirth, and other causes can result in some distressing changes in the vulva area. After surgery, they are very happy to have these functions return to normal.”

Other critics have voiced concern that gynecologists’ straying into purely cosmetic treatments is a inappropriate. However, as Dr. Scheinberg points out, “These procedures are no different than breast enhancement or tummy tucks which are performed for cosmetic reasons. Enhancing your appearance is a valid choice for women. It can improve their self-image and quality of life.”

Ultimately, Dr. Scheinberg notes, it’s an issue of giving women choices. “I believe that women should have cosmetic gynecology options,” he says. “It’s not up to me to tell a woman whether she should or shouldn’t be happy with the appearance of the vulvar area. It’s the patient’s choice.”

The Harley Medical Group Announces Rise In Breast Surgery Procedures In Ireland

The Harley Medical Group has seen a positive increase on last year’s enquiries. While breast reductions are becoming more popular with an increasing number of Irish women reducing their breast size in order to achieve a more slender figure, breast augmentation continues to be the most popular procedure performed at THMG’s Dublin clinic.

Pauline Hughes, Dublin Clinic Manager for The Harley Medical Group commented: “There is a noticeable upward trend for post-breast feeding breast augmentation procedures. 31 % of breast implant procedures performed at the THMG clinic over the past 12 months have been for women that come into this bracket. In the previous 12 months, this figure was in the region of 24%.

“The age profile of women presenting for post-breast feeding breast augmentation is late 20s to mid 30s years. This suggests that women are waiting until their final child (typically after 2 or 3 children) before choosing to ‘replace what they once had’, rather than opting for unnatural looking enhancements with larger breast implants.”

Typically, 7 years ago, 46% of Breast Augmentation patients went up three cup sizes whereas over the last 12 months THMG’s most popular size increase was 2 cup sizes. Breast Surgery remains the most popular of all cosmetic surgery procedures, and it accounted for 48% of all procedures undertaken by The Harley Medical Group in the last 12 months. Irish attitudes have changed dramatically from 7 years ago, as women are now happy to show-off their surgery. Over 65% of Breast Augmentation patients are between 25-35 years old with the balance mostly post breast feeding.
