LighterLife Relaunches Magazine In A New Smaller Handbag Size

LighterLife has relaunched its LighterLife magazine with a new look and improved content to offer readers added inspiration and understanding of just what LighterLife offers. The new feel and design of the magazine has been created with the help of publishing house, Specialist Publications.

The re-launch sees the weight loss magazine take on a new, clean direction. The size of the publication has moved from A4 to a smaller handbag size, making it more user friendly. The magazine also features more LighterLife clients than ever before, whether it’s at the beginning, middle or end of their weight-loss journey. Niki Webb, Specialist CEO said, “The relaunch gave us an opportunity to refresh the magazine from a photographic, design and content perspective. The new magazine is stylish and confident. The team at Specialist are very passionate about the LighterLife brand. The fact that thousands of people have battled obesity and are now managing their weight after following LighterLife is truly inspirational and something worth shouting about.”

The LighterLife magazine is now available exclusively through on-line subscriptions or via LighterLife counsellors and the new format sees the publication become available on a quarterly basis.

The decision to remove the magazine from the news stand provided the opportunity to make the magazine more specific to the LighterLife clients, whilst more care has been taken over the wording and language used, ensuring new clients and other audiences who might read the magazine will not be alienated but engaged in the content, and have an understanding of LighterLife.

Heather Butcher, LighterLife PR & Communications Manager commented “The new magazine will include further in-depth articles about our clients really exploring why they put on weight and how they found their individual LighterLife Journey. The new look issue is on sale from 22nd March and features a wide spectrum of weight-loss stories, tips and advice on dealing with difficult situations that may arise while losing weight, along with information that may be useful to family members who want a better understanding of LighterLife. For potential clients these features and stories are design to prompt and answer any questions people may have before embarking on LighterLife Total or LighterLife Lite.

Resveratrol Sales Continue To Grow Despite Controversy

Whether you liked it or not 2009 was the year you probably found out about resveratrol. General awareness of resveratrol as a health supplement has been growing steadily over the last few years. When news magazine 60 Minutes profiled the anti-aging compound found in red wine in a January 2009 segment though, resveratrol suddenly shot to prominence. Sales of the supplements then took off, rivaling even acai berry in volume.

But then Oprah and Dr Oz filed suit (US District Court of New York Case # 09CV7297 Judge Batts) against 50 acai and resveratrol supplement marketers citing unlawful use of their name, and the resveratrol craze came to a screeching halt … at least, for a couple of months.

The Oprah/Dr Oz lawsuit remains in the news, but consumers appear undeterred and are picking right back up where they left off. So much so, the Nutrition Business Journal projects resveratrol sales in 2010 will be five times those of 2009.

“The thing that makes resveratrol different”, says Andrew Ekman of ResveratrolHabit.com, “is there is so much scientific research showing the positive effects resveratrol has on the body.” Indeed, a search for ‘resveratrol’ on PubMed, the government directory for scientific publications shows 564 listings for the year 2009. As these numbers indicate there is a lot of excitement in the scientific community about resveratrol.

Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, the company profiled in the 60 Minutes story continues to see positive results from the human trials it is running. Other researchers like Will Steward of the Leicester Royal Infirmary, who oversees research there, including human trials involving resveratrol for its ability to reduce the risk of cancer, are also getting positive results.

Steward has great hopes for resveratrol. In an interview with James Silver of Wired Magazine, he said of the human trials of resveratrol he recently conducted, “Resveratrol, up to five grammes daily, was well tolerated and safe, and blood markers of biological effect looked promising, showing that [resveratrol] could have effects on cells which would be valuable in preventing cancer.”

Though when asked about resveratrol supplements his comments struck a much more conservative tone, allowing only that, “there is no strong scientific evidence of anything that you can claim right now in terms of any potential beneficial clinical effect of resveratrol in humans.”

ResveratrolHabit.com is a site dedicated to keeping the public up to speed on the pros and cons of resveratrol supplements and news related to resveratrol. Weight Loss – A Healthier Lifestyle from Healthsurvey.org

Through healthsurvey.org learn the fundamentals of weight loss, through our dedicated programs of weight reduction. Obese and over weight individuals face numerous problems in life, which can be combated with knowledge of weight loss decreasing methods, in a healthy way. Contrary to common belief, the real causes of obesity include bad nutrition, stress, emotional issues and hormonal imbalance and of course lack of mobility. Obesity contributes to the risk of diabetes, paralysis, possible cardiac arrest and other fatal complications.

Weight Loss – A Healthier Lifestyle from Healthsurvey.org

Despite all the attention this particular topic receives, obesity rates keep escalating due to fast food, unhealthy ready to make meals, fizzy drinks combined with reluctance to exercise. If an individual is serious about losing weight, this way of life has got to change. Making extreme changes by sudden diets and over exertion through rigorous exercise regimes is not the solution. Weight loss requires a change in diet paired with increased activity.

Cut back on calories by finding alternatives to your regular diet. Instead of frying, food can be cooked by grilling, boiling or steaming. Make sure you use a vegetable oil like olive, soya bean or canola. Increase the amount of vegetables and fruits, high in vitamins, in your healthy diet. Try leaner less fatty meat options like chicken, sea food and turkey. Lentils and beans are an excellent source of protein. Replace regular bread with brown or whole wheat. Eat less fast foods and packet foods, opting rather for healthier snacks like granola bars or nuts and dry fruit. Go easy on dessert, remember moderation is the key.

Say no to fizzy drinks, canned or bottled juices and energy drinks. Instead fresh fruit juices will provide healthier levels of glucose which are stored after hours (though the energy from fruit juices is usually used up before that occurs), unlike sugary juices which store in the body after 20-30 minutes of consumption. Drink lots of water to ensure the body receives an adequate amount of fluids, 16 glasses a day will do fine. Find weight loss centers in your city.

LighterLife Investigates Why February Has Become The New January For Dieting

LighterLife, weight loss and weight management specialists, investigates why February has become the new January when it comes to starting new diet plans and weight loss regimes.

To look into why February has been such a busy month for those starting diets, Lighter Life sent podcast presenter, Susan Spence to meet LighterLife Counsellor, Mary McLean and her clients, for the latest edition of the ‘Inside LighterLife’ podcast.

‘Inside LighterLife’ is a monthly podcast that gives clients and prospective clients the opportunity to find out a little more about the LighterLife Programme and the people involved. The podcast features real stories from real people that have lived and breathed the quick weight loss programme. Feedback on the podcasts is always encouraged and this month there is a set of BergHoff UK Castline pans, worth £175, up for grabs for whichever comment or quote is chosen by the LighterLife team as the month’s most inspiring.

Sara Jamison, LighterLife CEO, kicked off the podcast on how popular the month of February has been for LighterLife. Although January is normally the month of choice to begin a new healthy lifestyle, February has been an exciting one at LighterLife with the launch of the ‘Little Book of not being Big’.

Commenting on the Little Green Book of Not Being Big, which went out in the Mail on Sunday’s You Magazine, Sara said: “It’s a great little book that gets across some very serious messages that I think anyone who in their life has been on any kind of diet will be able to identify.” Anyone interested in knowing more can log on to the LighterLife website where they can download a copy or visit their local LighterLife Counsellor to request one.

Sara also provided some top tips and advice on starting a LighterLife Lite Programme that should help to keep dieters focused and achieve their weight loss goals and lose weight fast.

The January’s increase may be mainly due to all the snow at the beginning of the year that interfered with people’s diet and weight loss plans but for those who believe that now is the perfect time to start a diet, the LighterLife podcast is determined to help.

New You Boot Camp Helps You Beat The Blues On ‘Blue Monday’

New You Boot Camp, Europe’s No1 weight loss and fitness Boot Camp have come up with five simple tips which guarantee to make you feel better on the day, plus some blues-busting exercises which you can do from the comfort of your own home!

New You Boot Camp Co-founder Jacqui Cleaver, says: “Exercising raises the levels of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters in the brain, boost feel-good endorphins, release muscle tension, help you sleep better and reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Follow our tips to make you smile and our blues-busting desk exercises to beat the gloom on January 25th”.

TOP TIPS FROM NEW YOU BOOT CAMP – TRY THEM, THEY WORK!

1. Bite a finger gently and raise the corners of your mouth – this will trick your brain that it is smiling and it will release happy endorphins.

1. Try comedy skipping – commit to skipping to places when you are out of sight (high heels not recommended…) – think Phoebe in Friends!

2. Get moving – even walking up the tube or work escalator at a faster pace will expel extra energy, which if not used turns to negative energy.

3. Make January 25th a Saturday night – take extra time getting ready in the morning and make it a glamorous day.

4. Visualise where you want to be. Once that picture is embedded there, your subconscious mind begins working to make that picture a reality. It’s much easier to achieve your goals with your subconscious mind on your side.

Let’s face it – hanging out in the living room has never done fitness levels any favours. But since in a recession gym membership is often the first thing to go, the living room is where many of us have been spending time lately – with the gyms coming to us so here are 5 exercises you can do at home in the comfort of your front room!

The Real Reason we Pile on the Pounds

A new poll has revealed that one of the reasons men and women gain weight is because of being stressed out.

It has been proven that stressful episodes cause your body to go into survival mode, so your metabolism slows down, more calories are stored and cortisol and leptin- the stress hormones- are dumped in the abdominal region, adding to weight gain.

The waist expanding effect of stress was recently confirmed by a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. The researchers also found that women’s waistlines were affected by more types of stress than men’s; as well as money and job problems, women’s weight was shown to be inflamed by relationship difficulties and feeling trapped in their lives.

For many stressed out Brits, it can be a vicious circle of feeling frazzled, and so consequently eating the wrong things to feel better, which only ends up accentuating the issue.

Those longing to shed excess stones without the headache should think about having a consultation with The Hospital Group. As the UK’s leading weight loss surgery provider, The Hospital Group can offer a gastric band, gastric bypass or gastric balloon to those having trouble shifting stubborn excess weight.

Such is the interest in The Hospital Group’s weight loss procedures, bookings have increased to levels above that of the NHS. While the NHS reported that it had performed 2,724 weight-loss operations in 2008, The Hospital Group performed a total of 3,015 gastric procedures in the same period.

In January 2007, the total weight loss was a massive 300 stone, and nine months later 99% of patients recorded a significant – and safe – weight loss.

David Ross, Chief Executive of The Hospital Group said: “People try out the latest diet or try exercise, but sometimes it just doesn’t work alone. “Lots of people feel like there is nowhere to go after they have been on diets and this can lead to people feeling more stressed out, which only makes the situation worse. “It’s reassuring to see that The Hospital Group is continuing to help so many people lose weight.”

Moob Tube

A new vest has been launched which promises to give men a six-pack and banish dreaded “moobs”, but wearers have been disappointed with results.

The vest has reinforced elastane panels designed to decrease breast size and tummy and side panels to reduce love handles. But men are finding the vest is not living up to expectations. Chris Rose of Wood Green, in North London tried out the vest on his 40in chest and beer belly.

He said: “My moobs and tummy are slightly better, but it feels like a wetsuit and looks ridiculous on me.”

It seems men are desperately seeking something to boost their confidence in the body stakes- with male liposuction and breast surgery soaring in the past year.

Men looking to achieve that sculpted look can have a free consultation at The Hospital Group.

The Hospital Group, one of the country’s leading cosmetic surgery clinics saw a staggering 318 per cent increase in the number of ‘moob’ reduction procedures performed in 2008 compared to 2003.

Marrius Muller, a former gynaecomastia patient at The Hospital Group said: “Before surgery I used to hate seeing myself topless in the mirror. The surgery not only changed the way I felt about myself and body, but also how people perceive me.

“It gave me that added confidence which I lacked for so many years. Now, I can’t wait to get my top off on the beach.”

As well as the male breast reduction procedure, The Group also perform a number of other procedures helping men achieve that dream body, including gastric bands, abdominoplasty and liposuction.

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has grown from a small pharmaceutical company to one of the UK’s foremost cosmetic surgery providers. The Group is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none.

These brave men, from various walks of life had a variety of personal reasons for losing weight which ranged from being able to keep up their kids and reducing the risk of bad health, through to wanting to apply to become a fireman. What brought these men together was that they all had the same goal; to lose weight with LighterLife. Diet Pill Risk to Health

Dieters looking for a quick fix have been warned against popping mineral pills – after researchers found they increased the risk of heart disease.

The supplement selenium has been hailed by diet gurus as the miracle solution to shifting stubborn fat. The tablets contain antioxidants which some believe can also help to cut the chances of developing cancer.

But researchers at Warwick University found that too much selenium can cause cholesterol levels to rocket.

Using the mineral increased the risk of heart disease by 8 per cent and researchers have now called for a ban on the supplement. Although there is no speedy steps to lose weight, The Hospital Group can provide clear and concise advice for those wishing to undergo weight loss surgery.

The Hospital Group, the UK’s biggest provider of weightloss surgery, has seen a 73.9 per cent increase, with a staggering 12,848 people seeking surgery in 2008. In 2007, 7,385 people enquired into gastric procedures.

The surgery, including gastric band, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons can be used alongside liposculpture – also known as liposuction – and adominoplasty – the common tummy tuck– to sculpt and perfect your body and give you a healthier lifestyle.

Such is the interest in The Hospital Group’s weight loss procedures, bookings have increased to levels above that of the NHS. While the NHS reported that it had performed 2,724 weight-loss operations in 2008, The Hospital Group performed a total of 3,015 gastric procedures in the same period.

Eyelift Surgery On The Up

The Hospital Group has reported that the popularity of an upper eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) has been on the increase over the past 5 years, with 62% more patients opting for this surgery.

The typical eyelift surgery patient has drooping layers of skin and deep wrinkles on the eyelids. These lead to a tired and a sad looking appearance. This may run in families and is common in both men and women.

During this procedure a curved incision is made across the natural crease of the skin and excess fat and tissue is removed to lift and open up the eye area.

A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “Ageing is an issue which more and more people, both men and women, are keen to combat. Eye-lid surgery opens out the eyes and softens lines for a more youthful look.”

This common plastic surgery procedure, to correct heavy, saggy or tired-looking eyelids is called upper blepharoplasty. The procedure removes excess skin and fat in the eyelids to provide tauter skin and a fresher looking eye area.

After the procedure, this patient’s eyes and face look much brighter and more youthful without the eye lids. This patient had both upper and lower blepharoplasty (i.e. eyelids and eyebag removal).

The Hospital Group is one of the UK’s leading providers of cosmetic surgery, number one in obesity surgery and tummy tuck experts. So whatever your requirements, you can rest assured in the safe hands of the professionalism and experience that THG has to offer.

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has risen to become the UK’s biggest weight loss surgery providers, performing more gastric band procedures last year than the NHS. The Hospital Group is committed to providing the very highest standards and all procedures are performed by an expert medical team in state-of-the-art facilities that are second to none.

Liposuction on the Increase

The Hospital Group has reported that the number of women having liposuction has increased by 42% in the past 4 years Liposuction has grown in leaps and bounds over the last few years and is often now referred to as liposculpture. Liposculpture creates the same result as the more commonly used term, liposuction or Lipo. Very similarly to liposuction excess fat cells are removed, from almost any part of the body.

However, in contrast to liposuction, the procedure of liposculpture is a more time consuming operation with a greater amount of personal skill required by the plastic surgeon, and creates a smoother end result, changing the contours of your body or face. This cosmetic surgery procedure is suitable for both men and women.

A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “Liposuction is an incredibly popular procedure. With increasing coverage of celebrity bodies, we are seeing more women turn to liposuction to help them create the body they are looking for. Liposuction is a great option for tackling those stubborn areas which can be resistant to diet and exercise.”

The procedure involves insertion of a Cannula (small tube-like syringe) through a small incision in the skin. The fat is then drawn through the tube leaving a much smoother surface. The procedure is carried out under General Anaesthetic.

For those looking to undergo the procedure: the best candidates for liposculpture are those with stubborn areas of fat which are resistant to diet or exercise. This could include the tummy, buttocks, chin, arms, knees etc. A consultation with a Surgeon will help you identify what sort of outcome you could expect and if it is the right procedure for you. For example, liposuction can remove excess fat around the abdomen, but not excess skin. In this case a tummy tuck might be recommended in order to achieve the desired result.

Obesity and Society

Obese and overweight people are forecast to cost the nation £50 billion – half the NHS budget for a year – by 2050 if the trend continues unchecked, with diabetes the biggest draw on these figures.*

The NHS spends an estimated £600m a year on treating diabetes – the largest in primary care – and tackling obesity levels in Britain could save an estimate £950 per person each year. **

As well as drug spend, hospital admissions for Britans with problems caused by weight-related diabetes also doubled, from 7,000 in 2003-04 to 14,320 in 2007-08. **

In five years, the total numbers of people admitted to hospital as a direct result of obesity rose by 190 per cent, with 5,056 admissions in 2007-08. **

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “Barely a day passes without the cost of obesity on the NHS being mentioned. It’s a very real fact that as well needing to tackle obesity on a personal level, the nation’s obese must consider what a huge drain their weight-induced health problems are on the NHS.

“Having spent nine years working in obesity in the NHS, I feel that the only way to curb the epidemic is with the support of private healthcare, such as gastric band surgery at The Hospital Group.”

A report on the matter produced these key findings:

• Awareness of the problem is not low. †
• 49% of those questioned blamed their poor diet for their size. †
• 63% blamed a lack of exercise. †
• Stress was blamed by 20% of those questioned. †
• 14% blamed their genes and the same percentage said that they were too busy to do anything about their weight. †
• Giving up smoking, large breasts, beer and ‘emptiness’ were also accredited. †

A separate survey revealed that some overweight people believe their weight has affected their careers. The following are some interesting comments that came from this survey:

“I think it’s natural that people have less respect for you if you are overweight.”

“Some people look upon overweight people negatively in that they feel they cannot control how they eat, which may reflect in working life.”

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2056 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 5th-7th October 2009. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

OnePoll questioned 4000 adults between 19-21 October 2009. The survey was carried out online and the panel used was aged 16+ and nationally representative.

The Real Cost of Obesity on your Health

Obesity is responsible for 9,000 premature deaths a year in England. It reduces life expectancy by, on average, 9 years. The Department of Health’s Change4Life campaign also advises that after quitting smoking, keeping a healthy body weight is one of the best ways to reduce your chances of getting cancer.

With all these home truths, why are so many people ignoring the real cost that obesity can have on their health?

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “One of the most prevalent health issues for the obese is diabetes. 2.5 million people in the UK suffer from Diabetes and a great proportion of those with Type 2 could be cured if they lost their excess weight. “Obesity is recognised as the main factor in contracting Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to further complications such as foot ulceration, nepthropathy, retinopathy and heart disease – all with serious risks and discomfort for the patient, but also costly to treat.”

Research published by the American Journal for Medicine showed that following obesity surgery, 87% of type 2 diabetics either saw a complete cure or improvement.

Cirian added: “We are in a recession, but eating out has become the norm – the team of dietitians at The Hospital Group find that obese families think nothing of popping out for all-you-can eat pizza or Chinese on a regular basis. “This is the root of the problem. People who maintain a clinically obese body weight have a habit of consuming body-builder levels of calories and of course that has to change with a restricted calorie intake. “But it’s also a case of looking at what makes up a person’s diet. You can consume 1,000 high-quality calories and blossom or the same number of calories in junk food and you’ll be ill.”

The Cost of Obesity on Family Life

Playing with your children, relations with your partner or nights out with friends – all something people take for granted, but obesity can take away.

The Real Cost of Obesity report found that those living with a BMI over 25 begin to notice an effect on their relationships with those closest to them, but at this stage few recognise it is their weight which is dragging them down.

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “The team of dietitians at The Hospital Group see people every day who didn’t consider their weight to be the cause of the problems in their lives until they were ranking well above the 30 BMI level.”

The Department of Health has forecast by 2050, 9 in 10 adults will be overweight or obese* – being overweight is now the norm. “These people often feel terrible about themselves. Our job is to nurture and nourish their love of food, a healthy balanced diet and being socially and physically active.

“The real problem is that those 9 out of 10 adults are today’s children. Without meaning to, some people in Britain are living poorer lives and beginning to set their children on the same track.”

A recent report on the matter uncovered the following:

•Nearly half (45%) admitted their weight prevented them playing with their children and enjoying leisure with their family, with the top five activities ranked as:

o Swapping clothes
o Adventure sports
o Horse Riding
o Rollercoasters
o Bike Rides

•Almost a quarter (22%) admitted their children or family had hinted at embarrassment or concern about their weight – with men experiencing this more than women.

•37% of the obese people questioned said their weight negatively affected their ability to take part in leisure activities.

•22% of the obese people questioned said that their weight had had a negative effect on their sex life.

•11% of the obese people questioned said this had now had a knock on effect on the relationship with their partner.

•Those who felt their weight didn’t stop them doing any leisure activities was directly proportionate to BMI – the heavier being the more affected (with only 30 severely obese respondents).
