There’s a new diet game in town and it’s not a diet

There’s a new diet game in town and it’s not a diet. It’s called Diet Tuffy, an online system to help a woman succeed on any diet she chooses. Developed by a psychologist, Dr. Kenneth Schwarz, Diet Tuffy is based on the psychological principles of problem finding, breakthrough thinking, specific planning, and goal achievement.

Dieting remains at the forefront of most women’s minds. At any given time, 45% of women in the U.S. are on a diet, but here’s the raw fact: 62% of women ages 20 to74 are still overweight. The problem is, most women can’t stick to a diet. Through a series of fun-filled and confidence-building steps, Diet Tuffy helps a woman succeed where she has failed before. She can now successfully square off against lack of willpower, emotional eating, negative thinking, temptations, stress, and all the other dieting foes.

Dr. Schwarz who, with his wife Julie North Schwarz, founded MariasLastDiet.com, announced the release of Diet Tuffy today. Dr. Schwarz says, “Women who get stopped by the same old problems when they diet are going to like the totally fresh approach that Diet Tuffy gives them.”

Washignton DC Cosmetic Dentists offer patients amazing smile makeovers with inaugurals doings next week

Contractors and political organizers are not the only workers spiffing up things around here for the big inaugural doings next week. It appears many people have been spiffing up their smiles for the new regime as well.

“Call it inaugural fever, but one patient who has been thinking about improving his smile for along time, was so excited about our new president coming to town that he decided now is the time to look his best for all the parties and celebrations he’s going to,” says Dr. Sherman H. Telis, of the Washington Center for Dentistry, who practices just a few blocks from The White House.

Here’s the rundown on the new smile:

• Our technician conducted a Britesmile whitening session to lighten all existing teeth.
• Our periodontist, Dr. Madjid Matin, reshaped the gum tissue around his front teeth to provide a graceful new smile line.
• Dr. Telis placed eight lustrous all-porcelain crowns to create an exquisite new smile.

“Now he’s happy to face the inauguration in 2009!,” says Dr. Telis.

And it appears inaugural fever reaches as far away as Moscow. From thousands of miles—but only a cyber-click away—our first new patient from that part of the world came here this week—for a complete smile makeover! She was certainly happy to be visiting during such a momentous time for our country.

“This beautiful young woman said she researched dentists all over the internet, and she felt instantly comfortable coming here to get the smile she always wanted,” says Dr. Daniel J. Deutsch, also of the Washington Center for Dentistry. “And being here this week is a bonus.”

Here is the rundown on her new smile:

• Our technician conducted a Britesmile whitening session to lighten the shade of the existing teeth.
• Dr. Rinaldi placed 10 beautiful all-porcelain veneers across the top of her smile.
• Dr. Deutsch placed 7 exquisite all-porcelain crowns and bridges to enhance and replace missing teeth on her lower arch.

The result: Two stunning new smiles that would befit any new administration.

Health World Web is announcing addition of videos to the Health Communities from icyou.com, new medical providers’ ads campaign and new gadgets for doctors, clinical trials and support group searches

Health World Web, the premier Health 2.0 social networking site, has launched three new improvements for the site HealthWorldWeb.com.

Starting this week, users of Health World Web will be pleasantly surprised as video content from icyou (www.icyou.com), the source of health-related videos online, will be included in the communities. The icyou videos will complement the already formidable body of user-generated content on Health World Web ranging from user experiences, reviews, recommendations, blog posts and community forum sharing. “I’ve been always obsessed with providing more relevant information to our users. Addition of videos is just another big step in that direction. Videos are attractive because they are personal, compact and informative. As soon as you join the community of interest, not only you can participate and learn from blogs and forums, you can instantly gain knowledge from the best medical resources on that topic in the most convenient way ”, says Daniel Kogan, Founder and CEO of Health World Web.

“icyou is committed to bringing health information to as many people as possible,” said Nina Sossamon-Pogue, Vice President of Media for Benefitfocus, icyou’s parent company. “That’s why we’re proud to partner with Health World Web, which has found a great way to help build communities around the health issues that impact our lives.”

Aside from beefing up the content, Health World Web continues its mission to bring technology, social networking and patient interaction together by tapping into the widget technology making the search for medical professionals, doctors and specialists easier and more convenient.

The Doctor Search gadget will provide users with a tool to search for more than 1.3 million medical providers across the United States, including MDs, dentists, chiropractor, PTs and others. Along with Medical Providers Search Gadget HealthWorldWeb releases Clinical Trials Search, Support Groups Search gadgets. Now, anyone can embed a simple script into any Web site or personal iGoogle page to complete a convenient doctor, clinical trial or support group search powered by Health World Web. Our gadgets are available on this page (http://www.healthworldweb.com/pc/gadgets).

Lastly, doctors and medical professionals can also look forward to a better Health 2.0 with Health World Web. The problem with advertising on the Web has always been relevance. Imagine pitching obstetrics services to men or weight loss programs to anorexics. With Health World Web’s doctors advertising campaign, a paid advertisement is only displayed on the most relevant places on the site: whether it is on a community area, user area, forums, blogs or pages within each of those areas.

With the success of its Personalized Recommendation Engine (PRE) in providing a faster and more efficient way to deliver relevant content and information to patients, HWW decided to tailor its PRE technology so that doctors and other medical professionals could effectively advertise on the site. The PRE system utilizes patient data and activities on the site and then matches that information with doctors’ services, thereby bringing his or her specialty onto the patient’s screen.

What’s even better is that all advertisements are treated – and priced – equally. In observance of the service Health World Web gives to its users’ community, only relevant advertisements are served. Hence, our advertisers do not have to worry about having a flashy advertisement, nor do they have to bid for space or exposure. Only relevant ads shown to interested people—at a very low fixed cost!

About Health World Web

Field Fisher Waterhouse has recovered compensation for the cost of a claimant’s hospice care in a case that is though to be the first of its kind

Field Fisher Waterhouse (FFW), the full service European law firm, has recovered the value of the hospice care that was required by a claimant. This is thought to be the first case of its kind, with most hospices generally exclusively funded by charitable donations. As part of the settlement, the firm was able to recover £12,500 to be paid over to the hospice.

The case arose out of the death of a 64 year old man due to mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, in December 2007 after spending his final days being cared for in a North London Hospice dedicated to cancer patients.

Through his life the man suffering from the cancer had worked as a carpenter, painter and labourer. In 1963, whilst employed as a painter for J Murphy & Sons Ltd, he was exposed to asbestos dust whilst sanding down and filling in walls in prefabricated housing containing asbestos. He was then exposed to further asbestos when working for the same company at a factory in Dagenham, cleaning debris from the guttering on roofs made from corrugated asbestos.

In August 2005 he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an asbestos related cancer on the lining of one of his lungs. He was eventually admitted to the hospice where he spent the last month of his life.

Rodney Nelson-Jones, partner in the Asbestos Claims Group at Field Fisher Waterhouse, was instructed to claim compensation on behalf of the man’s family. The firm was able to recover £170,000 from J Murphy & Sons Ltd, £12,500 of which is being paid to the hospice which provided him with care worth over £400 a day.

This is thought to be the first time that compensation has been recovered for a patient’s hospice care, which is usually funded by charitable donations. It has long been possible to recover compensation for the value of care provided by relatives but FFW’s innovation has been to extend this principle to charitable care provided by hospices. The firm plans to continue to claim the cost of hospice care in future mesothelioma cases.

Rodney Nelson-Jones commented: “We are delighted to have been able to secure extra funding for the hospice. Hospices do a wonderful job and rely on charitable donations to provide much needed palliative care for cancer patients. We hope that this case will mean that they are now provided with an additional source of funding.”

Pruhealth Vitality Index reveals clear gap between Britons’ perceptions of what it means to be healthy and having a real understanding of the impact of lifestyle

The new PruHealth Vitality Index has revealed a clear gap between Britons’ perceptions of what it means to be healthy and having a real understanding of the impact of lifestyle, diet and fitness levels on current and future health. The Index – which will be repeated on a biannual basis to track the nation’s health trends – provides a comprehensive analysis of general health and wellbeing in Britain.

The report reveals that 69%* of people in Britain claim they are in a good state of health. However, when lifestyle and fitness choices are scrutinised the reality paints quite a different picture as a significant proportion of those who feel they are in a good state of health do not follow a healthy lifestyle:

– only 58% feel they actually follow a healthy lifestyle
– 47% describe their fitness levels as ‘good’
– 24% eat their recommended five a day of fruit and veg
– two thirds think they are overweight
– 21% of Britons smoke
– only a fifth of Britons don’t feel under any stress
– only 14% go for regular screenings or check ups with their GP

Dr David Grainger, Senior Fellow, Cambridge University, said: “This report makes clear that people listen to and understand the public health message. Lifestyles are improving and disease rates are falling. But there is plenty more to do.”

He continued, “If half of current smokers managed to stop smoking tomorrow, we estimate that nearly a million years of lost life would be saved from heart disease alone. Regular health checkups are particularly useful, and it is disappointing to see that only 14% of respondents had regular health checks, despite the emphasis of the public health message on prevention rather than cure.”

Dr Grainger believes,The Vitality Index is a valuable new indicator of attitudes and behaviours that promote a healthy lifestyle. The Index balances the importance of a number of different areas to provide an interesting snapshot of lifestyles across the UK, and has the potential to predict future trends in public health. This focus on balance, rather than over-emphasis of the importance of one particular element of a healthy lifestyle, conveys exactly the right message at a time when we are in danger of being overwhelmed with guidance on staying fit and healthy.”

The majority (81%) of Britons say they know what they should be doing in order to follow a healthy lifestyle, but many simply aren’t putting this into action, with lack of motivation, cost and lack of time clear barriers to living a healthy lifestyle. More than half (53%) of respondents feel free access to exercise and swimming classes would help tackle national obesity, and 49% claim cheaper fruit and vegetables would have an effect.

*The research was carried out on behalf of PruHealth by Ipsos MORI. A nationally representative sample of 3,034 GB adults were questioned online in July 2008. Results are weighted to be representative of the GB adult population.

About PruHealth:
PruHealth was launched in October 2004 as a joint venture between Prudential and Discovery Holdings from South Africa. Since launch, PruHealth has grown quickly. It now covers approximately 190,000 lives and in a sample of its individual customers, one third said they had changed their behaviour for the better because of its Vitality reward scheme which encourages policyholders to look after their health.

Drug addiction is a sickness that can be carried till death. If not properly cured, life is the payment, not only of the victim, but also of the people around him. Sending a patient to the right Drug Treatment Center can guarantee totally recovery

Drug trafficking is not just a problem in the US, but by every nation. In some areas these activities continue to worsen despite extensive efforts to solve to the problem. Appropriate measures are done by each government to possibly eliminate the root cause of the problem, but still these elements continue to find their ways in running their operations.

Drug addiction has been an epidemic to the society. Yearly, millions are helplessly victimized by senseless drug dealers on their intention of earning in ways not permitted by law even if that could mean wasting and ending someone’s life.

Despite the government’s efforts to stop these activities, still they continue to grow adding more and more drug dependents to their list. Drug Rehabilitation and drug treatment programs are crafted to aid dependents to fully recover from their dependency on drugs.

Drug dependents are not criminals. They are victims of the deadly games of ruthless drug dealers who do not value life. At the Cliffside Malibu Drug Treatment Center, patients are provided with the care and compassion they deserve. Patients are screened to prepare the center with the necessary treatment programs that will be most beneficial for them.

Staffs are welcome trained and seasoned with their job making it easy for patients to recover. The tranquility of the environment will help patients get closer to the true meaning of life giving no room for hesitation and doubt about things once patients recover from their conditions.

Youths are the most common victims of drug addiction. They form the greater number of people admitted to drug treatment programs. Because of their immaturity they become perfect prey for drug dealers. Drugs do nothing but devastate lives.

Addiction is not all about drugs. Other forms of addiction can include alcoholism that is a serious condition that can entirely ruin a person’s life by nature. To facilitate alcoholic patients, drug rehabilitation centers should be equipped with programs targeting the root cause of the problem which is the dependency of the victim to alcohol.

Continued testing in rural Southern Africa shows promiseful results for those with HIV/AIDS

AIDS Research Assistance Institute, a non-profit organization, has been monitoring hundreds of people with AIDS/HIV when they add the immunity boosting food supplement, ‘concentrated Flax Hull Lignans’ (FHL) to their diets. The results are better than expected and may hold a key for future researchers as they try to find solutions to the AIDS pandemic worldwide.

Boasting a 92% success rate, A.R.A.I. has been involved with rural Southern African grass roots organization leaders who have been giving FHL to people suffering from the AIDS/HIV virus. Typically when an HIV infected person adds 1.5 tsp of the FHL to their daily diet, their viral loads drop significantly (around 35% of them drop to non-detectable within the first 6 weeks!) and their CD-4 counts (measurement of immunity) raise in great numbers. A malnourished child will also typically start growing in height and weight once introducing the FHL into their diets. Many children have grown between 6-11 cm in a three month period!

Researchers can only speculate as to the exact function of the FHL that is causing the success. Many studies have been done in the U.S. by doctors that show lignans boost immunity. The FDA has reported that flax seed lignans have anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungus properties.* Tests have shown that FHL’s ORAC values (measurement of anti-oxidants) are very high. Kale, the super anti-oxidant dark leafy green vegetable, has an ORAC value of 1770, while FHL’s equivalent ORAC value is 19,600. FHL has typically been researched for it’s effects against cancer but now hundreds of people with AIDS/HIV are feeling better, going back to work, and are causing researchers to take a serious look at the possibilities of using a simple, all natural food supplement to help fight AIDS/HIV.

A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery

Nearly 5 million children underwent surgery in the United States in 2008 and according to one prominent anesthesiologist, many of those surgeries were made more difficult by parents who refused to follow their doctor’s orders. Dr. Armen Ketchedjian, author of the book Will It Hurt? A Parent’s Practical Guide to Children’s Surgery, says that parents often ignore doctors’ directions and requests for pre-surgery testing and preparation.

Considering the stakes, the reasons parents give for not complying with their doctor often seem, well, unreasonable: Scheduled tests may interfere with family vacation plans or because parents, in their own opinion, feel that the requested tests or diets aren’t important.

“I’ve seen parents who felt that the rules didn’t apply to them,” says Dr. Ketch, as he is known to his patients. “They assume that doctor’s will understand if certain tests are not done or if certain consultations are missed.”

Missed appointments and tests cause unnecessary delays in the preparation for surgery according to Dr. Ketch, who says that medical professionals order the tests for a reason.

“We in the medical profession are held to a higher standard and so we can’t take anything for granted,” says Dr. Ketch. “We need the fullest cooperation of parents to provide the best care possible.”

Will it Hurt? is a guide for parents whose children need surgery and a big part of the book’s message is the importance of the preparations that contribute to a successful surgery. Dr. Ketch says he believes that informed parents make the experience easy for everyone, including their child. And that can pay big dividends after the surgery.

According to Dr. Ketch, “Children who are less anxious need less anesthesia during surgery and less recovery time after the surgery. Parents can ensure their children are more relaxed by being informed and by not putting any undue stress on the process.”

Will It Hurt? helps educate parents about pediatric surgery. It is an easy to-read resource will give you, your child and your family the help and reassurance you need to make the surgical experience as stress-free as possible.

Listed in The Guide to America’s Top Anesthesiologists by the Consumer Research Council of America, Dr. Ketch trained at Cornell Medical Center, with a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a pain management elective at Boston Children’s Hospital. He has also worked to help develop new techniques in ambulatory anesthesia, taught medical students and residents, and cared for more than 10,000 patients.

Dr. Ketch is also the author of the children’s book Golden Apples (winner of the 2008 Reviewer’s Choice Award), a beautifully illustrated book that aims to help educate children about the dangers of drug abuse.
