Study published in World Journal of Urology confirms Fotona SMOOTH® laser technology is a safe, effective & minimally-invasive solution for stress and mixed urinary incontinence

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia, 21-Sep-2018 — /EPR HEALTHCARE NEWS/ — The latest study published in the World Journal of Urology (Comparison between erbium‑doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser therapy and sling procedures in the treatment of stress and mixed urinary incontinence – https://doi.org/10.1007/s00345-018-2445-x) provides further confirmation that Fotona SMOOTH® laser technology is a safe, effective and minimally-invasive solution for stress and mixed urinary incontinence (SUI and MUI). The article, written by Dr. Nobuo Okui, compares Fotona’s minimally invasive IncontiLase® Er:YAG laser therapy with the more conventional TVT and TOT surgical sling procedures.

Asian Study Confirms Favorable Results of Fotona SMOOTH® Laser Therapy for Urinary Incontinence

In the study performed by Dr. Okui, 50 Japanese women were treated either surgically (tension-free vaginal tape – TVT or transobturator tape – TOT) or with a Fotona laser. The 1-h pad test, ICIQ-SF, and overactive bladder-symptom score were used to assess the patients before and 12 months after treatment. Laser therapy was performed by first applying a local anesthetic to the vaginal wall and then inserting a probe into the vagina. Laser irradiation was performed for 20 min with an Er:YAG wavelength of 2940 nm (Dynamis XS, Fotona) for a total of three treatments (alternating every month). Results of the 1-h pad test and ICIQ-SF showed comparable improvements in SUI in the sling and laser therapy groups, while some of the patients with MUI in the TVT and TOT groups showed exacerbation. In conclusion, the TVT and TOT procedures and the laser therapy are comparable for SUI; however, laser therapy is superior in terms of MUI and complications. The study thus once again confirms the safety and efficacy of Fotona SMOOTH® laser therapy for urinary incontinence.

Urinary Incontinence Treatment Options

Conventional treatment options for urinary incontinence are surgical, and include TVT or TOT sling procedures, which involve inserting a synthetic material. Problems often arise with artificial meshes that require new treatment methods. With the Fotona SMOOTH® Er:YAG laser thermotherapy (also known as IncontiLase®), the goal is to provide a minimally invasive therapy based on vaginal collagen hyperthermia followed by collagen remodeling and new collagen synthesis, which results in overall regeneration of aged or stressed vaginal tissues and subsequently greater support to the bladder.

Unique Fotona SMOOTH® Technology for Maximum Safety

Patient safety is the primary concern and, for this reason, the patented Fotona SMOOTH® technology holds a very unique position within the spectrum of gynecological treatment options. It is a non-surgical procedure (no incisions) and without implants or appliances. The Fotona SMOOTH® method of dual-tissue regeneration is completely non-ablative and therefore minimally invasive to the vaginal wall. The treatment involves an additional superficial heat-shocking mechanism of tissue regeneration, and a unique self-regulating safety feature. These dual-tissue regeneration characteristics of the Fotona SMOOTH® Er:YAG laser allow for an exceptionally high degree of safety and efficacy in thermotherapy of the vaginal wall. This is what makes Fotona SMOOTH® a significantly safer alternative to many widely used and more-invasive procedures.

Evidence-Based Laser Medicine

Over the past few years numerous (over 35) other studies on Fotona SMOOTH® laser therapy have been published by distinguished gynecologists from around the globe in some of the most trusted and renowned international scientific journals, all with favorable results (https://www.laserandhealthacademy.com/en/practitioners/recommended-reading/gynecology/). One such noteworthy clinical paper published in March 2018 by Dr. Adolf Lukanovic and Dr. Mija Blaganje is the first randomized controlled trial study (on 114 premenopausal parous women) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of non-ablative Er:YAG laser therapy as an alternative non-invasive treatment of SUI and the improvement of sexual gratification (published in the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology. 2018 (224): 153-158). The results from this study indicate that a single session of IncontiLase® treatment improves the impact of SUI symptoms on quality of life and sexual function in premenopausal parous women significantly better than placebo.

In another Asian study, Dr. Yi-Wen Tien et al. from the Chang-Hua Hospital in Taiwan examined the effects of laser treatment for female SUI on pad weight, urodynamics, and sexual function in 35 women (published in the International Urogynecology Journal. 2017; 28(3): 469-476). The study reveals that the effect of IncontiLase® treatment for mild SUI was moderate at the 6-month follow-up. Moreover, it improved LUTS, quality of life, and the sexual function of both partners. The authors conclude that the IntimaLase® procedure is very effective in the treatment of SUI and is not associated with any severe adverse effects.

Similarly, Dr. Yi-Hao Lin et al. from the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan obtained favorable results. Their study investigated the effects of non-ablative laser treatment on overactive bladder (OAB) syndromes, SUI and sexual function in 30 women with urodynamic stress incontinence (published in the Taiwanese Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology. 2017 (56): 815-820). The results showed that IncontiLase® treatment can resolve SUI and coexistent OAB symptoms three months after therapy, while repeated laser therapy may be necessary after six months. The results also revealed that sexual gratification improved, while no major adverse effects were noticed.

The quantity and quality of the studies performed with Fotona SMOOTH® laser therapy is such that Fotona’s Dynamis has been cleared in the European Union for SUI (IncontiLase®), vaginal laxity – vaginal relaxation syndrome (IntimaLase®), genitourinary syndrome of menopause – GSM (RenovaLase®) and pelvic organ prolapse (ProlapLase®), giving women the option to choose a safer and less-invasive treatment alternative. In Asia, the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration has already cleared Fotona Dynamis for mild to moderate SUI, and the Singapore Health Sciences Authority has cleared the Dynamis for the treatment of SUI and GSM.

20 cm Long Worm In The Human Eye, First Ever Recorded On Video

Can you believe that a 20 cm worm can house itself in the human eye? But one has to believe one’s eyes.

Here is the video clip of a 20 cm long worm being removed from a human eye through surgical procedure. It is the first time ever that such a long worm growing in the eye has been recorded. The video has evoked great interest among medical students as well as the general public.

http://www.indiavideo.org/health/loa-loa-worm-removing-surgery-8857.php

Dr. Ashley Thomas Mulamoottil, the doctor who recorded this unique surgery says that this is the seventh worm that he has removed in the last one decade and it is also the longest.

The worm Loa Loa was originally found in Africa and has now reached Asia. The mangrove fly or deer fly is believed to be the carrier of this worm. The eggs of the worm enter the human body through small wounds inflicted by the fly. The death of the worm inside the body could be fatal as it could contaminate the blood. The disease is known as microfilariasis or Loa Loa infestation (Loiasis).

The video portal www.indiavideo.org and the Indian language portal www.oneindia.in are taking the video to the world. According to Mr. M.R. Hari, Executive Editor of India Video, the process recorded by Dr. Ashley fetched 2 million views on Facebook in three days and this persuaded them to make a short movie with supporting information to make it useful. Loa Loa disease could be a major health problem in future and hence an awareness campaign is the need of the hour. ‘We take up that mission now’ says

Mr. Sriram Hebbar, CEO of One India.

Lower Eye Surgery Gains Popularity with Women

The Hospital Group has reported that lower eye surgery is becoming increasingly popular amongst women. More lower eye surgery procedures were performed than upper eyelid lifts in 2009, as well as there being a larger percentage increase in the procedure over the past 5 years.

The appearance of loose droopy skin under the eyes can be very ageing and give a“sad” look to your face. Sun and smoking can accelerate the signs of ageing, while others are more prone to inherit the condition. This condition can easily be remedied with a simple eyelift procedure.

Eye bag removal is a common and simple plastic surgery procedure which can deliver dramatic results, making the eye area look more youthful, attractive and alive. The procedure is becoming increasingly popular in men as well as women. The Hospital Group can help you achieve a more bright-eyed, wide awake look.

A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “THG Comment: – “We see more patients in need of eye bag removal than eye lift surgery and this procedure is a lot more popular. Eye bags can also be caused through stress, smoking and genetic factors.”

Breast Reduction Surgery on the Increase

The Hospital Group has reported that the number of women choosing to have a breast reduction has gone up by 78% since 2005.

The main reason for considering a breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty is that an over generous bust size can be distressing or uncomfortable.

Large breasts can often be the cause of significant physical discomfort and self-consciousness. Breast reduction surgery could significantly help to relieve the constant backache or shoulder pain associated with big breasts.

Regarding the reductions, a spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “We have seen a noticeable rise in women wanting to feel less self-conscious about their bodies. A lot of women with naturally large breasts are embarrassed because of their size and feel insecure as they can attract a lot of unwanted attention.”

Breast Lift not Enough Anymore

The Hospital Group has reported that during 2009, more than twice as many women have opted for a breast lift with implants, as opposed to just a breast lift.

A mastopexy or breast lift procedure suits women whose breasts may be pendulous as a result of a relaxation of the ligaments due to weight loss, age or having children. The actual size may be fine but the breasts have lost their volume and tone or the nipples may point downward. However, if extra volume is required then a breast uplift procedure may be combined with implants for the best overall result. This has become an increasingly popular method for rejuvenating the appearance of the breasts.

A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “A breast uplift with implants has become more of a popular option with women wanting to increase the size of their chest as well as the shape”

Those looking to undergo the procedure are sure to achieve better results that ever before. Modern breast implants are available in a variety of types and sizes. You can easily achieve the look you are after with by consulting with one of the many expert surgeons available.

Diet Pill Risk to Health

Dieters looking for a quick fix have been warned against popping mineral pills – after researchers found they increased the risk of heart disease.

The supplement selenium has been hailed by diet gurus as the miracle solution to shifting stubborn fat. The tablets contain antioxidants which some believe can also help to cut the chances of developing cancer.

But researchers at Warwick University found that too much selenium can cause cholesterol levels to rocket.

Using the mineral increased the risk of heart disease by 8 per cent and researchers have now called for a ban on the supplement. Although there is no speedy steps to lose weight, The Hospital Group can provide clear and concise advice for those wishing to undergo weight loss surgery.

The Hospital Group, the UK’s biggest provider of weightloss surgery, has seen a 73.9 per cent increase, with a staggering 12,848 people seeking surgery in 2008. In 2007, 7,385 people enquired into gastric procedures.

The surgery, including gastric band, gastric bypasses and gastric balloons can be used alongside liposculpture – also known as liposuction – and adominoplasty – the common tummy tuck– to sculpt and perfect your body and give you a healthier lifestyle.

Such is the interest in The Hospital Group’s weight loss procedures, bookings have increased to levels above that of the NHS. While the NHS reported that it had performed 2,724 weight-loss operations in 2008, The Hospital Group performed a total of 3,015 gastric procedures in the same period.

Half Of All Women With Implants Are Having Their Old Breast Implants Replaced

The Hospital Group has reported that over the past 3 years, half of all women with implants are having their old breast implants replaced.

Breast enlargements, or “boob jobs” as they are more commonly known, are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures available. This procedure helps women achieve a “curvier” form. It is popular with women who are naturally small busted or those that have noticed a change in their bust size due to weight loss, breastfeeding or the natural ageing process.

Regarding implant replacement, a spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “A lot of our breast augmentation patients wish they had gone a little bigger so therefore choose to have another procedure with larger implants. We also treat patients who have had a breast implants elsewhere and then choose The Hospital Group for their second procedure.”

Eyelift Surgery On The Up

The Hospital Group has reported that the popularity of an upper eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) has been on the increase over the past 5 years, with 62% more patients opting for this surgery.

The typical eyelift surgery patient has drooping layers of skin and deep wrinkles on the eyelids. These lead to a tired and a sad looking appearance. This may run in families and is common in both men and women.

During this procedure a curved incision is made across the natural crease of the skin and excess fat and tissue is removed to lift and open up the eye area.

A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “Ageing is an issue which more and more people, both men and women, are keen to combat. Eye-lid surgery opens out the eyes and softens lines for a more youthful look.”

This common plastic surgery procedure, to correct heavy, saggy or tired-looking eyelids is called upper blepharoplasty. The procedure removes excess skin and fat in the eyelids to provide tauter skin and a fresher looking eye area.

After the procedure, this patient’s eyes and face look much brighter and more youthful without the eye lids. This patient had both upper and lower blepharoplasty (i.e. eyelids and eyebag removal).

Liposuction on the Increase

The Hospital Group has reported that the number of women having liposuction has increased by 42% in the past 4 years Liposuction has grown in leaps and bounds over the last few years and is often now referred to as liposculpture. Liposculpture creates the same result as the more commonly used term, liposuction or Lipo. Very similarly to liposuction excess fat cells are removed, from almost any part of the body.

However, in contrast to liposuction, the procedure of liposculpture is a more time consuming operation with a greater amount of personal skill required by the plastic surgeon, and creates a smoother end result, changing the contours of your body or face. This cosmetic surgery procedure is suitable for both men and women.

A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “Liposuction is an incredibly popular procedure. With increasing coverage of celebrity bodies, we are seeing more women turn to liposuction to help them create the body they are looking for. Liposuction is a great option for tackling those stubborn areas which can be resistant to diet and exercise.”

The procedure involves insertion of a Cannula (small tube-like syringe) through a small incision in the skin. The fat is then drawn through the tube leaving a much smoother surface. The procedure is carried out under General Anaesthetic.

For those looking to undergo the procedure: the best candidates for liposculpture are those with stubborn areas of fat which are resistant to diet or exercise. This could include the tummy, buttocks, chin, arms, knees etc. A consultation with a Surgeon will help you identify what sort of outcome you could expect and if it is the right procedure for you. For example, liposuction can remove excess fat around the abdomen, but not excess skin. In this case a tummy tuck might be recommended in order to achieve the desired result.

Obesity and Society

Obese and overweight people are forecast to cost the nation £50 billion – half the NHS budget for a year – by 2050 if the trend continues unchecked, with diabetes the biggest draw on these figures.*

The NHS spends an estimated £600m a year on treating diabetes – the largest in primary care – and tackling obesity levels in Britain could save an estimate £950 per person each year. **

As well as drug spend, hospital admissions for Britans with problems caused by weight-related diabetes also doubled, from 7,000 in 2003-04 to 14,320 in 2007-08. **

In five years, the total numbers of people admitted to hospital as a direct result of obesity rose by 190 per cent, with 5,056 admissions in 2007-08. **

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “Barely a day passes without the cost of obesity on the NHS being mentioned. It’s a very real fact that as well needing to tackle obesity on a personal level, the nation’s obese must consider what a huge drain their weight-induced health problems are on the NHS.

“Having spent nine years working in obesity in the NHS, I feel that the only way to curb the epidemic is with the support of private healthcare, such as gastric band surgery at The Hospital Group.”

A report on the matter produced these key findings:

• Awareness of the problem is not low. †
• 49% of those questioned blamed their poor diet for their size. †
• 63% blamed a lack of exercise. †
• Stress was blamed by 20% of those questioned. †
• 14% blamed their genes and the same percentage said that they were too busy to do anything about their weight. †
• Giving up smoking, large breasts, beer and ‘emptiness’ were also accredited. †

A separate survey revealed that some overweight people believe their weight has affected their careers. The following are some interesting comments that came from this survey:

“I think it’s natural that people have less respect for you if you are overweight.”

“Some people look upon overweight people negatively in that they feel they cannot control how they eat, which may reflect in working life.”

All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2056 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 5th-7th October 2009. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

OnePoll questioned 4000 adults between 19-21 October 2009. The survey was carried out online and the panel used was aged 16+ and nationally representative.

The Real Cost of Obesity on your Health

Obesity is responsible for 9,000 premature deaths a year in England. It reduces life expectancy by, on average, 9 years. The Department of Health’s Change4Life campaign also advises that after quitting smoking, keeping a healthy body weight is one of the best ways to reduce your chances of getting cancer.

With all these home truths, why are so many people ignoring the real cost that obesity can have on their health?

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “One of the most prevalent health issues for the obese is diabetes. 2.5 million people in the UK suffer from Diabetes and a great proportion of those with Type 2 could be cured if they lost their excess weight. “Obesity is recognised as the main factor in contracting Type 2 diabetes, which can lead to further complications such as foot ulceration, nepthropathy, retinopathy and heart disease – all with serious risks and discomfort for the patient, but also costly to treat.”

Research published by the American Journal for Medicine showed that following obesity surgery, 87% of type 2 diabetics either saw a complete cure or improvement.

Cirian added: “We are in a recession, but eating out has become the norm – the team of dietitians at The Hospital Group find that obese families think nothing of popping out for all-you-can eat pizza or Chinese on a regular basis. “This is the root of the problem. People who maintain a clinically obese body weight have a habit of consuming body-builder levels of calories and of course that has to change with a restricted calorie intake. “But it’s also a case of looking at what makes up a person’s diet. You can consume 1,000 high-quality calories and blossom or the same number of calories in junk food and you’ll be ill.”

Dr. Dominic O’Hooley To Be Featured In Upcoming Television Series

The Dental Clinic director, Dr. Dominic O’Hooley, has been announced as the featured celebrity dentist on the upcoming miniseries, Lorraine Kelly’s Big Slim: The Chawner Challenge.

Airing in January 2010, the new 6-part series follows two-time X Factor reject Emma Chawner and her family as they try to slim down.

Emma Chawner first caught the nation’s attention when she appeared on the X Factor in 2007 in a meringue dress, singing Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On. The 19-year old was rejected for both her look and voice by judge Simon Cowell.

Chawner returned two years later with her sister Samantha, 21, only to be rejected again.

Beyond her multiple appearances on the X Factor, Chawner and her family have also gained publicity for other reasons – weighing in at a combined total of 83 stones, the unemployed family has been claiming £22,500 in benefits, according to The Daily Mail.

The upcoming TV series, filmed over a period of five months, tracks the family as they undergo the ultimate makeover. From a diet and fitness regime, to close work with nutritionists, health and fitness experts, and life coaches, the entire programme is designed to provide the family with the opportunity to really change their lifestyle and outlook.

“We’ve designed a format that allows them to meet some of the best experts in the country to give them an opportunity to really change the way they live and how they feel about themselves, whilst providing some excellent entertainment in the process,” Paul Stead, executive producer for Daisybeck Productions, said, in an interview with Broadcast.

One of these experts appearing in the series is dentist Dr. O’Hooley who treated both Emma and her mother, Audrey, at The Dental Clinic in Leeds.

O’Hooley commented on the significance of dental treatments in such all-encompassing makeovers.

“A great smile can go a long way in providing someone with a real sense of confidence,” O’Hooley said. “It can affect the way that you feel about yourself, as well as the way that others perceive and respond to you.”

Though O’Hooley declined comment as to exactly what treatments Emma and Audrey received, he noted that he was happy to contribute to their makeovers.

“I think both Emma and Audrey are very happy with their new smiles, and I was glad to be able to provide them with something that can really contribute to their transformations,” he said.

The Cost of Obesity on Family Life

Playing with your children, relations with your partner or nights out with friends – all something people take for granted, but obesity can take away.

The Real Cost of Obesity report found that those living with a BMI over 25 begin to notice an effect on their relationships with those closest to them, but at this stage few recognise it is their weight which is dragging them down.

Leading dietitian and Head of Weight Management Services at The Hospital Group, Cirian Marie-Beddoes, said: “The team of dietitians at The Hospital Group see people every day who didn’t consider their weight to be the cause of the problems in their lives until they were ranking well above the 30 BMI level.”

The Department of Health has forecast by 2050, 9 in 10 adults will be overweight or obese* – being overweight is now the norm. “These people often feel terrible about themselves. Our job is to nurture and nourish their love of food, a healthy balanced diet and being socially and physically active.

“The real problem is that those 9 out of 10 adults are today’s children. Without meaning to, some people in Britain are living poorer lives and beginning to set their children on the same track.”

A recent report on the matter uncovered the following:

•Nearly half (45%) admitted their weight prevented them playing with their children and enjoying leisure with their family, with the top five activities ranked as:

o Swapping clothes
o Adventure sports
o Horse Riding
o Rollercoasters
o Bike Rides

•Almost a quarter (22%) admitted their children or family had hinted at embarrassment or concern about their weight – with men experiencing this more than women.

•37% of the obese people questioned said their weight negatively affected their ability to take part in leisure activities.

•22% of the obese people questioned said that their weight had had a negative effect on their sex life.

•11% of the obese people questioned said this had now had a knock on effect on the relationship with their partner.

•Those who felt their weight didn’t stop them doing any leisure activities was directly proportionate to BMI – the heavier being the more affected (with only 30 severely obese respondents).

Youth-Boosting Ops Are Booming

The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider has revealed that youth-boosting ops are booming, as older workers look to compete with their younger counterparts.

Sagging skin with lines and wrinkles on the face and neck are sure giveaways of the signs of ageing, as skin looses elasticity. Enquiries show that women are who were thinking about a facelift also considered a combination of a neck lift and facelift together, in order to banish the turkey neck and sagging jowls in one fell swoop.

Liz Dale, Director of The Harley Medical Group, said: “Redundancy and unemployment levels are increasing and people are looking for ways to keep themselves one step ahead of their colleagues. Most patients think about surgery for many years and office competition simply acts as a catalyst.”

Liz Dale added: “This latest ‘age preventing’ trend within the +50 market is noticeable across our 26 clinics. It appears that older workers feel it’s important to invest in their looks, despite cutting back across other areas.”

For many patients it is all about feeling more confident as they get older; there is increased pressure in the work place as it is. The stress takes its toll on health and appearance and this will inevitably affect the way in which people feel about themselves. All these feel good procedures make a significant difference to self esteem and that confidence impacts on other areas in life.

Recession Doesn’t Deter Plastic Surgery Enthusiasts

The Hospital Group has reported that facelifts are gaining popularity, despite the recession. THG have seen a 14% increase in facelifts over the past year.

Facial surgery, also known as a rhytidoplasty, can reduce wrinkles and help to rejuvenate your appearance. The best patient is someone with jowls, loose neck skin and who has a general saggy appearance to the skin on the face and neck. After surgery, the face is smoother, tauter and more youthful looking. A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “Since the recession hit, we have not seen a down turn in demand. Patients who are adamant on slowing down the signs of ageing will save their money and go without other luxuries, in order to fund their procedure.”

During this common plastic surgery procedure, Incisions are made in the natural crease lines in front and behind the ears and behind the hairline. A facelift is most beneficial those who have jowls, loose neck skin and a general saggy appearance to the skin on the face and neck. If the patient also has lots of wrinkles, non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment can be combined with a facelift for an improved overall result.

Since The Hospital Group was established in 1992, it has risen to become the UK’s biggest weight loss surgery providers, performing more gastric band procedures last year than the NHS. Why More Women Are Choosing To Have A Breast Lift

The Hospital Group has reported that the number of women having a breast lift has increased by 21% over the last year.

A breast lift, or mastopexy, as it is formally known, is a procedure that suits women whose breasts may be pendulous as a result of a relaxation of the ligaments due to weight loss, age or having children.

The actual size may be fine but the breasts have lost their volume and tone or the nipples may point downward. However, if extra volume is required then a breast uplift procedure may be combined with implants for the best overall result.

A spokesperson for The Hospital Group, said: “More and more woman, post pregnancy, have chosen to have a breast uplift to rebuild their confidence in their bodies. Particularly after breast feeding women lose volume in their breasts and want to get their femininity back.”

During this common plastic surgery procedure, the surgeon will carefully remove a small section of excess skin from each breast to lift the bust line. The result will give the patient’s bust a much more youthful appearance. It is often combined with the insertion of breast implants in patients who have lost volume in their breasts as a result of age, weight loss or breast feeding.

The Hospital Group is one of the UK’s leading providers of cosmetic surgery, number one in obesity surgery and breast uplift experts. So whatever your requirements, you can rest assured in the safe hands of the professionalism and experience that THG has to offer.
