The Harley Medical Group Spills The Beans On Secret Surgery

The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, reports that over 85% of cosmetic surgery patients hide their treatment from colleagues, while almost one in five will keep their surgery secret from their family.

A recent, voluntary survey of 1,000 patients (800 female and 200 male patients) revealed that 15% of women keep their surgery a secret from their families, 27% from friends and 78% from their colleagues. 22% of men keep their surgery a secret from their families, 52% from friends and 94% from colleagues.

Liz Dale, Director at The Harley Medical Group, said, “The majority of our patients are honest about their surgery – at least after they’ve had it done. Many patients will keep quiet in the lead up to their surgery and intend to keep it hidden but can’t help revealing their secret when it comes to the unveiling of their new stomach or boobs. However, celebrities are a different matter altogether and if they’ve decided to keep their plastic surgery, botox or other cosmetic treatments under wraps they really keep quiet, or even outright deny it. Many patients at The Harley Medical Group have fed back to say they have a lot more respect for celebrities who are honest about having cosmetic procedures.”

Angela Fry, who had breast augmentation at The Harley Medical Group, said, “After my fourth child my boobs were left shapeless and empty. Before the op I’d decided to only discuss the surgery with my husband and parents but when friends at my gym asked me how I’d regained my figure I felt I needed to share with them. I’m absolutely comfortable with the fact I had to give nature a helping hand.”

However, a male patient commented that while he had received laser hair removal to his back, he hadn’t told his friends or anyone at work. He admitted, “I worry that I’d lose some cred with my male associates if they knew I was having cosmetic treatments.”

Liz Dale concluded, “It’s not uncommon for people to keep it a secret before and during recovery then to spectacularly unveil their new look at a ‘reveal party’. Non-surgical treatments are much easier to keep a secret because they don’t leave such an obvious mark; however some patients do manage to keep their surgery hidden, from colleagues at least, explaining their absence from work on holidays or house renovations.”

5. Seeking tax credits or tax deductions. The federal government rewards those who invest in long term care insurance.

With their lives changed for the better, they stripped down to not only celebrate their amazing weight loss, but to also raise money and awareness for a charity close to their hearts.

Lee, who posed for the month of January, lost six stone and is now running rings around his young football team. Gary, otherwise known as Mr. February, is six stone lighter and no longer lags behind the rest of his walking group. Lee, or Mr. March, has lost the five stone he put on after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Mark, who can be seen in the calendar in April, has a new lease on life and can keep up with his kids after losing four stone. Mike, or Mr. May, is no longer clinically obese and since losing just under three stone, is a faster and more confident water polo player. Five stone lighter, Nuno, or Mr. June, now has the confidence and the BMI to apply for his dream job as a fireman.

Former yo-yo dieter Phil, who posed for July, lost three stone which has given him the confidence to do what he loves – DJ’ing. Steven, or Mr. August, can now enjoy a full game of football without feeling tired and Rod, who features in September, is now training for a triathalon to help maintain his five stone weight loss.

LighterLife weight-management Counsellor Gina Lennon, who coordinated the men during the calendar photo shoot, said: “I’m delighted to have been involved in this project. There has been a great deal of interest and this has definitely put the fun back into fundraising. The calendar boys have achieved so much – losing such large amounts of weight, maintaining their weight loss, overcoming fears about their body image and baring all to raise money for a very worthwhile charity.”

Catalent Expands Capabilities In Testing For Melamine In Food And Medicinal Products

At a time when melamine-contamination has received global attention, Catalent Pharma Solutions continues its legacy of innovation by rapidly developing new FDA guidance-compliant tests for trace amounts of key contaminants in food and medicine. Incidents of melamine contamination in milk products, baby formula, dairy and non-dairy products manufactured in China have been widely reported, leading to product recalls and increased inspections by the FDA.

The current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) regulations require that all components (i.e. ingredients or raw materials) be tested before they are released for use in the manufacture or preparation of drug products (21 CFR 211.84). It is critical that all manufacturers determine whether they are using an at risk component for melamine contamination to manufacture or prepare a drug product.

In response to the FDA’s new guidance titled “Pharmaceutical Components at Risk for Melamine Contamination,” Catalent has successfully qualified a method for determining if suspect excipients are contamination-free to within 2.5 parts per million. The method is based on that provided by the FDA (Laboratory Information Bulletin No. 4423 “GC-MS Screen for the Presence of Melamine, Ammeline, Ammelide, and Cyanuric Acid”).

Catalent is now able to provide its customers successfully qualified and validated limits tests for trace levels of melamine, ammeline, ammelide, and cyanuric acid in lactose.

Melamine is a compound made of carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen and is typically combined with formaldehyde to produce a durable and moldable plastic that is fire and heat resistant. Trace amounts of melamine have recently been discovered to be toxic to dogs, cats, pigs, and chickens by veterinary scientists after kidney or renal failure occurred due to their food being contaminated with the chemical.

“Catalent is proud to have satisfied the demanding regulatory standards the US FDA has provided for detecting melamine,” said Kent Payne, Vice President and General Manager of Catalent’s Respiratory, Analytical and Biotechnology Services business. “Detecting trace levels of melamine in food and medicinal products at these levels is a challenging process, but is key to help avoid future public health crises. In order to support this critical public health need, Catalent can expedite this testing and provide results within 48 hours from receipt of samples

Emma Chawner first caught the nation’s attention when she appeared on the X Factor in 2007 in a meringue dress, singing Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On. The 19-year old was rejected for both her look and voice by judge Simon Cowell.

Chawner returned two years later with her sister Samantha, 21, only to be rejected again.

Beyond her multiple appearances on the X Factor, Chawner and her family have also gained publicity for other reasons – weighing in at a combined total of 83 stones, the unemployed family has been claiming £22,500 in benefits, according to The Daily Mail.

The upcoming TV series, filmed over a period of five months, tracks the family as they undergo the ultimate makeover. From a diet and fitness regime, to close work with nutritionists, health and fitness experts, and life coaches, the entire programme is designed to provide the family with the opportunity to really change their lifestyle and outlook.

“We’ve designed a format that allows them to meet some of the best experts in the country to give them an opportunity to really change the way they live and how they feel about themselves, whilst providing some excellent entertainment in the process,” Paul Stead, executive producer for Daisybeck Productions, said, in an interview with Broadcast.

One of these experts appearing in the series is dentist Dr. O’Hooley who treated both Emma and her mother, Audrey, at The Dental Clinic in Leeds.

O’Hooley commented on the significance of dental treatments in such all-encompassing makeovers.

“A great smile can go a long way in providing someone with a real sense of confidence,” O’Hooley said. “It can affect the way that you feel about yourself, as well as the way that others perceive and respond to you.”

Though O’Hooley declined comment as to exactly what treatments Emma and Audrey received, he noted that he was happy to contribute to their makeovers.

“I think both Emma and Audrey are very happy with their new smiles, and I was glad to be able to provide them with something that can really contribute to their transformations,” he said.

In Afghanistan and Pakistan the opium (heroin) trade is tightly controlled by al Qaeda and the Taliban, and despite the war the efforts, the production of heroin and opium has dramatically increased – heroin is still dirt-cheap and readily purchased on the streets of Kabul and sold in short distance of military barracks. This phenomena has caused many analysts to be alarmed that our troops, reacting to the stress of war and ease of access of drugs, may develop drug habits like many of the soldiers in the Vietnam era.

The prevalence of cheap heroin has become a major issue in this country for teenagers who have begun experimenting with the drug as it is often cheaper and easier to buy than alcohol. Last year more than 46 people died from heroin overdoses in Nassau County, NY – this represents a 75 percent year over year increase. One of these individuals was Natalie Ciappa, a National Honor Society member at her high school on Long Island.

Recently, this past Wed, more than 1,000 parents gathered at a hosted forum in Smithtown, NY to voice their support and concern for the drug problem.

Directly correlated to the increase in heroin addiction has been the number of deaths by people using methadone. Many individuals who enter heroin rehab, also have tried methadone. A recent study published by the National Drug Intelligence Center (DIC indicates a 390% increase in deaths due to methadone since 1999. Increase in methadone deaths attributed to the drugs emerging popularity for use with chronic pain sufferers as well as increased diversion (stealing from legitimate sources and diverting to the street for illegal consumption).

The highest overdose rate was experienced among those between the ages of 15 – 24.

Opiate addiction or dependence which is recognized as a central nervous system disorder, can affect anyone from any walk of life. Opiate addiction is essentially what happens after someone intakes opiods such as Heroin, Oxycontin, Percocet and others for extended periods of time causing the brain to stop producing the vital chemical dopamine (the body’s natural response to pain as well as other physical activities) which in turn causes an uncontrollable urge for that person to have to ingest more of the drug they had been taking just to feel “normal”.

Opiate dependence while chemically the same as addiction more often occurs in people who have suffered from chronic or severe pain and have to be on this type of medication for an extended period of time. Normally to avoid any unpleasant effects the person’s physician will taper them off of the medication so the patient’s brain function has a chance to return to normal. Once the brain is actively producing dopamine and as long as the patient is no longer in pain, the medication is no longer medically needed.
